Kaiser and I surfed out at Sloat yest evening. Pretty warbled but there were remains of a nice leftover NW groundswell in the water. Set waves would come in and cross up a little, and the walls were somewhat clean and very makeable. So great to get that feeling of riding up and down set waves coming in at longer intervals, a rarity for CA in July. Before paddling out around 4pm, I noticed many groups of dolphin swimming around just outside of the line-up. They would surface every now and then, usually sticking together. Didn’t see any signs of sharks, but it appears that there have been many sighting over the last few days. Must have something to do with the whale beaching, but I’m not sure. The water was a bit brackish so visibility was minimal. That’s the part that is a bit freaky, when you can hardly see your boots. Nevertheless, I’d say there were about 20 or so in the water and the session felt comfortable. I might reconsider paddling out at OB solo right now, better to pick a spot that is occupied by a few other heads. At least, this is my feeling. I Could feel differently in a week, but with the fog, brackish water, and a dead carcass on the shore, I would be a little cautious for now. There’s never been a recorded attack out at OB, I don’t think, but that’s not to say that you won’t see a landlord cruising around just outside the breakers. That would instantly drain all urine from my bladder bag. This is something I would like to avoid seeing.

i heard they buried the whale yesterday...anyone know if this is true?

surfed lindy this morning. rest of the beach pretty chopped up even at dawn but lindy had a weird little glass zone, even almost offshore at moments. waves did not have a lot of juice to them but there were a few almost head-high sets. a log would've been nice. it even got a little sunny towards the end of sesh (around 8). a frisky seal sighting, but no sharks...

Posted by: paul b at July 23, 2003 10:58 AM

After a steller arvo session last night with Bug out at Sloat, I was jonesin' to get back out on the dawnie today. Got up, drove the beaches this morning in anticipation of uncrowded glory... and, crap, crap, crap... VFDubs smaller and more blown out then yesterday. Middle of the beach... maybe. Sloat, too much water flowing around and the posse of fisherman still shadily occupying second lot..

I digress... Have you ever wondered why in the hell these guys casting have to fish right where we all paddle out? Isn't there enough coastline to find some remote location to play with your poll elsewhere? Must I paddle in awaiting to get tangled in fishing line? Doesn't make sense to me. Maybe @ OB, but why at Lindy? Get a sack and go fish of Pedro Point, its good be better there.

So, there were like 30 dudes fishing last night and today at second lot. Shady I say. Drove on down to Lindy in hopes of scoring. Thought about a few other locals thinking E most likely was chillin on some point break somewhere laughing his ass off. Thru the dense fog, down past MickyD's, flags showing sideshore/onshore winds. Arrive at Lindy to see more groomed conditions then OB. The south wind clearly helping out here. Think about Montara, Jetty, etc. Hate driving. Hang out for about 10 minutes thinking someone might show up and be my encouragment. Didn't happen. Went to work. Sucked.

However, if you had a log, conditions seemed decent out there.

Any reports out there? Any landlord lurking? Anyone going to the surf flicks esta noche?

Posted by: Kaiser at July 23, 2003 10:58 AM

With these south winds the southern end of Montara might be worth a look. The past few days when I drove past - it looked good. (afternoon)

Posted by: jhmb at July 23, 2003 11:02 AM

surfed Montara last night under heavy fog and glassy head high/high tide conditions. overall-it was pretty good with a very peaceful feeling in the complete fog. my girl got her butt kicked in the shorebreak on the way in...watch it at Montara...it is knarly. my advice: if you are going...go...100% no hesitation, he/she who hesitates will most certainly get rolled. see you out there tonight if anyone's is going! scored a never before seen anyone surfing spot (left reef/point) sunday - solo in heavy shark territory...incredably fun and beautiful. the dream is still out there - peace! -matt

careful surfing by the buried whale:

When asked if the decomposing whale poses a threat to surfers, Collier replied, "If it were still leaking bodily fluids into the water, I would not go surfing in that area for several more days. It could be there isn't a shark within a couple of miles, however, I would not be surprised if someone were to observe a shark once the tides and waves start washing over the whale and thereby carry more of the whale's body fluids and/or scent into the water. Even if the whale is buried, unless it is well above the high tide line, the body fluids will continue to be dispersed into the water for a period of months and possible even for as long as a year or more."

Collier adds, "I would suggest that they (surfers) be cautious and very observant when surfing this area. If the waves are actually washing up onto the whale and thereby carrying its fluids and scent out to sea, I would exercise extreme caution when swimming, diving, or surfing in this area. The waves and tidal effects create an "odor corridor," which could carry the whale’s scent out to sea for miles."

“The effects of whales fluids on sharks is exactly the same as chumming with tuna oil and other fish attractants in that it will appear as a slick on the surface of the water and can be dispersed miles out to sea,” says Collier. “I don't really think anyone realizes just how potentially dangerous this dead animal’s carcass could be to those using the ocean waters in that area."

To use an analogy, Collier asks, “What happens to you when you go outside and smell a BBQ cooking or the aroma of something you like in the air? Now imagine you’re a shark, you smell in the water one of your favorite prey, easy to obtain because its dead, now you swim to the area where the scent is originating - but you can't find the food. If this scent continues to flow out to sea, the shark might remain in the area and attempt to locate the prey in question. While swimming in the area the shark sees something moving through the water, the scent of the whale is still present, the shark is hungry so it swims up to investigate the object, to determine if it is edible. The result, its a person! I would suggest not utilizing this area for any ocean activity for several days to determine if any potentially dangerous sharks are in the area.”

Just got back from Lindy. Mostly waist-to-chest high with some bigger set waves coming through. Definitely not as good as the past couple days. Windblown and sloppy but nice to get wet.

I know what ya mean about the fishermen, Kaiser. Walked the dog around second-lot last night and saw a crazy number of people fishing. What's up with that? Tons of fish in the area? Saw a few fishermen pull some massive--at least 24"--fish out of the water. Salmon?

why the hell didn't they tow that whale out to sea and sink it for a natural burial!! that would be easier and better for everybody. I had a conversation with Collier yesterday, and he said that if they bury it wrong, whale rot will be percolating through the sand and potentially elevate the sharkiness for MONTHS!.

On a happier note, does everyone know that when you see dolphins, it's a very good sign that you won't see any sharks. dolphins are faster, stronger and positively homicidal when it comes to sharks. they hate them and will often ram them to death with their hard noses. there was video once of four or five dolphins in the Bahamas going psycho on this shark...they fucked his shit up bad. Gotta love Flipper.

Posted by: bertrand at July 23, 2003 12:40 PM

didn't see any sharks, russian nuclear subs, or mermaids. but pacheco was fun yesterday evening. lots of waves shared between a few good men.

Posted by: dt at July 23, 2003 12:43 PM

Actually, I've heard and seen proof of great whites regurgitating their meals and often their previous meal was a dolphin. Personally, seeing a dolphin doesn't make me feel any better, but I'd much rather see a dolphin than a shark.

i checked out the (headless) whale on monday night and had a nice chat with GGNRA ranger john. he said there are about 10 whales buried around that same area of ocean beach...so after that whale returns to the earth (they were burying it under sodium lights on monday pm), OB will be just as safe/dangerous as it was before. or so he said. he also pointed out a bunch of BBQ-crazed great whites zipping around just outside the farthest break...i'm going to console myself with the thought that all those fins belonged to dolphins...

fishermen at pacifica...i don't know what's up with there being so many right now. the few I've talked with seem friendly enough, but I got all wrapped up in a line last winter and that kind of SUCKED. he was apologetic about it, though...and, hell, it kind of cracked me up. He was apologizing...I was tripping through invisible wires...the bait was still out to sea...funny stuff. Almost as funny as my usual surfing.

see you at the movies.

as reported on fuckedcompany.com, here's a weird hippie link to the whole OB beached whale thing. complete with bongo memorial.

This is pretty messed up...

Anyone know where they buried this thing? Are there going to be sharks hanging around for another year?

Hey all, I have some free passes to a sneak preview of "Step Into Liquid" tonight at 1000 Van Nasty. The show is at 7:30. Each pass is good for free admission for you and a guest. Let's say the first 4 people to let me know they want one, gets one.

Posted by: adam at July 23, 2003 12:56 PM

the freindly flipper must be no sharks myth is untrue. Sharks follow pods of dolphins to feed of the weak. They do attack sharks but only in defense. A few weeks ago a man was bit by a great white off west oahu. He had been swimming with dolphins until they sped off....

Posted by: eric at July 23, 2003 12:57 PM

DAMN! I'd love to go, but have other things planned.

You're a good man!

Do you know when It'll officially open?

Posted by: Crawl at July 23, 2003 01:01 PM

damn..and I was believing it the whole time..now I've got to face facts and fear sharks when I'm out there! guess I'll find some other reason to believe I'm safe!

Posted by: bertrand at July 23, 2003 01:06 PM

It's striper (stripped bass) season. Surfcasters have to go where the fish are. They follow the bait and when the bite is on they haul ass to get there. Some of those guys are pretty hardcore and will be out fishing whenever it's best, even if it's 3 o'clock in the morning. Saw some with 20+lb fish the other day.

I was talking to one and he told me how much he liked Boarding House North Shore!

Posted by: R3W at July 23, 2003 01:28 PM

did the drive the coast thang, ended up at Lindy, wasn't very compelled by what i saw, and thought about heading south. but, alas and alack, the work clock was tickin', a buddy was in the water, and there were a couple peaks that seemed to be sorta working so i hit it. unfortunately, i didn't have much luck with the mushy shape and logger competition...but, as paul b mentioned, toward the end, the sun started breaking through and i got to enjoy yet another picturesque morning in the water. additionally, i did get some vicarious stoke as my buddy, who had a little more board under him, managed to snag a few long, mellow lefts.

Like Bertrand, I also used to be comforted when there were dolphins around. I guess it depends on their behavior. (see link)

Hey niceness folks, BRUNCH DEETS:

This Saturday, July 26. 10 amish onwards.
2036 Great Highway, upstairs. Just walk up. Between Pacheco and Quintara. Look for the most glaringly conspicuous house on the entire highway and you're there!

sig. others cool :) , but there are 3 dogs in this house so little kids might not work out. FYI my dog is very friendly, sheds tons, and WILL steal your food!

This week has been heinous frenetic , so forgive in advance any poor planning on my part. I'm picking up a bunch of cold-type foods and drinks and coffee, do bring your own goodies to share if you want fancier fare. Kitchen open, downstairs neighbors might break out the bbq later, it's all good.

Drop in and out anytime 10 and onwards, surf, munch, pop a video in the tiny tv, sign my new board [heh] and enjoy meeting peeps at the ultimate house of surf stoke.

Will repost this info Friday. Cheers!
s.s. sharkbrunch

PS mid OB wavey but blown. Deserted. Finally in town this aft., if it perks up at all I'll yell.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbrunch at July 23, 2003 02:13 PM

crawl -- they buried that whale right where it beached....at sea would definitely have been better. seems more noble, too. baird whales are semi-endangered and overfished in japan. but i don't see the city footing that bill...

Posted by: friendly at July 23, 2003 02:29 PM

As a means to cut down on the crowds and flying boards at Linda Mar, the Pacifica City Council is providing these to all newbies at Lindy.

Posted by: Kaiser at July 23, 2003 04:48 PM

Mid OB: blown. Mush, whitewater, and sometimes shoulder highish closeouts. However, this being OB land of the hardcore, there are 4 people out. One is a total surfing Einstein and pulling miracles out of this slop. I have no idea . Amazing. Surfing wonders never cease around here.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at July 23, 2003 05:02 PM

It will not be safe to surf OB until at least November, maybe later. Everyone should go someplace else, or else be eaten by sharks, You've been warned.

Be careful - some of those sharks are reported to have "frickin laser beams" mounted on their heads...

On a more serious note, this is serious sea life season, starting in August, and lasting into at least mid September. Dive bombing pelicans, baitfish jumping. The sea is SO alive. I always get real nervous when the bait fish start jumping around my board and the pelican kamikazes dive-bomb withint 10 yards of me. Just slightly less nervous than when several seals swim like mad for shore and beach themselves in a hurry...
