waves to be had
nothing sickeningly risickulous.. but.. surfable waves at most local beaches this morning. SF buoy holding steady at 5ft 10seconds. Whale Stank Beach looking approachable. About 3 out of 10 waves providing a tapering slope of watery acceleration. biggest waves probably head-high.. breaking steeply on the inside, mushy on the outside. I watched Sloat for a bit too and came very close to giving it a go.. but.. the sea-surface was a bit warbled even with the absence of wind. It also looked morbidly grey, lonely and exposed out in the water. Like.. if you were sitting out there alone.. you'd catch little mysterious glimpses of robed spirits floating in the mist.. Out of the corner of your eye you'd see dark masses lurking under the brackish water. Maybe a bird's cry would shift just enough in the hazy fog to sound like a distant scream of distress. i don't know.. it just felt real spooky out there in the early morning still.
sooo.. onward down to the butt of bay-area board-riding bemusement. Super-Dogg glassy all throughout P-town... You're favorite little Pacifica secret beach, corner, sandbar, cove or reef will probably be working today. But.. like the lamewad, non-exploratory, cookie-cutter i can be.. i ended up at Schmlindy.. but.. the ol' gurl was lookin' mighty purdy this morning i have to admit.. super glass.. shoulder-high waves.. 80% closeout walls.. 20% steep walls of surprising niceness.. Surfed with the Lerminator for a while.. watched that kid snag a long left and then a long right as his last ride... watched him make a decent backside top-turn on the right. I personally only had one real moment of passion the whole sesh.. I took off on a sizeable set wave.. it looked like it might closeout but i was going anyway.. at the last second a little section formed for me.. i quickly pounced to my feet, gained speed while dropping down the face.. then i turned off the bottom and aimed myself vertically up toward the lip, traveling back up the face of the wave.. with a bit of luck, determination and speed i reached up and extended my board skyward to meet the crashing lip.. a fairly-explosive impact ensued and i felt the wave resolutely push back against the bottom of my board.. the impact redirected my whole flow and the next thing i know i'm recovering in the white water.. standing back up and riding it out. I gave myself a little personal "whoo hoo" and then paddled back out for more. The more i attempt maneuvers off the lip the more i realize that it's all about speed, balance and timing.
anyway.. still no wind out there... go get some..
random right.. looks nice
winkipop... the land down under
nice suring with ya e. it was fun and glassy. i too got spooked by OB this morning.
i saw a fisherman with two 3 foot striped bass at the showers on my way out.

Props to Adam Burke for hooking it up last night. Got some ducets to a little mysto screening of Step Into Liquid at AMC on Van Nuts. Not too many surfers in the crowd, more film geeks then anything. Got another free pass in the lobby so Bug joined in the fun. JC representin' fo' the 650. Dana Brown had a sweet Q&A post premier session. Saw OB's favorite body surfer in the crowd. I thought the flick was pretty sweet but I gotta give it another viewing before I make a real judgement on it. I think my anticipation got the best of me as I have been waiting to see that flick for like over a year now. BTW, JC is a pimp.
That's all I got. Didn't check the waves today but seriously considering a Lindy run in about 30 minutes. Any takers?
Posted by: Kaiser at July 24, 2003 11:12 AMTwo days on the road into redneck-land to rescue my child from the clutches of Babylon. That's all I'll say on the matter - don't even ask!
Posted by: Jimmie at July 24, 2003 11:28 AMSince I've been out of it lately, I need the scoop on this whale deal. Is it still on the beach? Are we still worried about the landlord patrolling the hallways at Ocean Beach?
What did I miss (surf-flick wise) at the Balboa last night, or is it tonight?

Whale of a funeral in S.F./Scientists and gawkers gather round a 41-foot leviathan rotting on Ocean Beach
Carl T. Hall, Chronicle Science Writer
Posted by: e at July 24, 2003 11:42 AMA seaside burial is planned today for a rarely seen Baird's beaked whale that washed up dead at Ocean Beach in San Francisco.
Big crowds gathered on the beach Monday and watched the grisly tableau as biologists from the California Academy of Sciences spent much of the day hacking off the skull, a flipper and other choice body parts with machetes and steak knives.
A steady parade of beach strollers and schoolkids off for the summer holidays pressed up as close as federal lifeguards would allow, braving the overwhelming stench of putrefying Beradius bairdii.
"It's not so bad -- my dad smells worse sometimes," said Wesley Messino, 11, who dropped by with his mother and two siblings.
The whale skull is destined for the museum's extensive bone collection. Soft-tissue samples will be examined microscopically for clues to the
cause of death. The rest of the behemoth will be pushed above the tide line and buried late this morning with the aid of a bulldozer and backhoe,
the National Park Service said, noting that care had to be taken so as not to disturb the habitat of the rare snowy plover, which lives in the area.
Experts said they had no idea what might have killed the animal, a fully grown male measuring 41 1/2 feet from beak to tale. A beach visitor first spotted the carcass on Sunday near the end of Kirkham Street, initially mistaking it for the bottom of a capsized boat.
Barefoot in the surf and knee-deep in whale Monday, Raymond Bandar, a veteran specimen collector for the California Academy, labored for hours to slice through the thick blubber and pry apart football-sized vertebrae in order to free the prized head.
Baird's beaked whales, named for Spencer F. Baird, an American naturalist and onetime Smithsonian secretary, typically spend most of their time diving for squid and deepwater fish far off the coast.
Although they are not considered endangered, only about 400 are thought to live off the California shoreline, compared with some 22,000 migratory gray whales.
"It's pretty unusual to see them beaching at all," said Kathy Zagzebski, stranding manager for the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.
During a century of collecting specimens, only one other Baird's beaked whale skull -- taken from an animal that stranded near Santa Cruz in the 1920s -- has found its way into the academy's vaults.
"Almost nothing is known about them," said Douglas Long, an academy biologist also working at the scene. "It's kind of a mysterious species.
The dead whale lay upside down on the sand, its light-gray underside covered with dark slash marks from fights with other beaked whales. Big
chunks of flesh were missing from shark bites, most likely sustained after its death.
There was no evidence of human contact with the whale, no evidence of any major injury or illness. Officials plan a full range of tests but caution that an exact cause of death may never be established because of the advanced state of decomposition when the body was found.
Males of the species can live to be 80 years old. It was unclear Monday just how old the Ocean Beach whale might have been when he died, but
biologists said he was clearly getting along in years.
jimmie, - I can only imagine what happened now.
Anyway, a dead whale with big shark bites out of it beached at K-L Ocean Beach. There were many reported shark sightings. Two days later, the whale was buried.
The sharks, which apparently have "frickin laser beams" mounted on their heads, are confused and continue to circle Ocean Beach. Until further notice, all surfers are advised to surf within the safe confines of Linda Mar Beach, Pacifica.
Posted by: blakestah at July 24, 2003 11:56 AMMid OB: alas I am not there, but when last seen at 9:30ish ish the breeze was up and the sun might have been winning the battle with the fog. Watched one guy paddling out for what seemed forever, though the waves weren't very big. Aggressive water. Just thinking about it makes me feel like I should be doing pushups.
Movies last night were cool and so relaxed, those folks make surfing look sooooo eaaaaaasy. Arrr can't wait for this month to be over, need to get in the water!
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at July 24, 2003 12:08 PMblakestah - let your imagination run wild. Nothing horrendous, but I'm tellin' ya, the kid's got NO LUCK at all.
Posted by: Jimmie at July 24, 2003 12:20 PM"The message is ... (remember that one?) don't have kids unless you gots bail money!"
So are you saying that Pedro is gonna be even more crowded than usual ... and now with folks that can actually surf (considering it'll be overflow from Ocean Beach)?
e, dudes, headed down to the SC, just to get away for a day... hope to find a little something, maybe a slight increase tomorrow am. hope so.
Crazy you posted that pic...surfed winkipop last april/may with "tucker" (he posts every so often). Such a fun wave, a few different spots where that same wave breaks, depending on swell. It gets pretty epic. bowly, barrely, racy, roundhousable, long, uuaahhh. Thanks for the thursday moning OZ memories E... If anyone gets out to Manly, give it a surf, good times....

Posted by: bbr at July 24, 2003 01:49 PMLunch Report: Em, this sandwich is mighty tasty.... Uh, well, Lindy is really windy, mostly sideshore but it looks super duper strong out at sea. White caps all over the place. As per the fact that Lindy handles S winds pretty well, the swells cleaned up a bit as they came in the bay. Nothing great, nothing terrible. No booties was nice, grabbed a few nuggets that I rode all the way into double ups on the sand. Thought I snapped a board on shore! If you need salt water, go for it. If the winds die off, could get better.

This "incident" happened a couple of weeks ago at a predominately longboard break Called "Boatdocks" in Pacifica, CA. It involved a kook with an attitude that did NOT match his ability and three generations of surfers (all related), very well known in the surfing community and in the water at the same time.
Here's the scene:
The kook is in his mid 20s. He's riding, or rather trying to ride a short board and not having much success. He's flailing and running over people right and left and nearly everyone is having "words" with this guy, suggesting that he just go in. He runs over Tait and dings his own board but blames Tait for it. Tait tells the kook that he dinged his own board and that he needs to learn to control it because he's endangering everyone in the water.
Finally, a 12 year old kid paddles by the kook and said, "I thought we asked you to leave, nicely". The kook slides off his board and attacked the kid, putting his hand on the kids' face and shoving him underwater. In an instant, the kids uncles, dad and grandfather, as well as friends converge on this kook and, well, needless to say, the kook ended up on the beach with his board, or rather what was left of it. Oh, yeah, and he was also left with the threat of a Law Suit for attacking the kid if he went to the police.
