E's Surf Report

heard a great old one on the way to work today, reminded me of hanging out in grade school trying to breakdance like all the "cool kids" in high school...oh man...remember the big fat neon shoe laces? anybody have the breakin' soundtrack, or breakin 2 electric boogaloo? anybody see the documentary 'scratch' (that's actually a new vid, not an 80s thing)

cloude - good on ya. I have some interesting hiking tales about that place.

I am sticking to my guns on the wave forecast. There WILL be surfable swell here tomorrow morning, don't know about winds, could be iffy. But, swell should be 4-5 ft 11-12 sec from 300 deg. It will be a one day only swell. Get on it while it is good, Sunday will be MUCH smaller, maybe flat again. Also, Saturday afternoon should bring WINDS again.

Mid OB: News flash, week of 4/8/03 ; A tanker hauling newly mined Wave Repellent™ foundered off the coast of Northern California and started leaking it's cargo into the surrounding waters. The entire Norcal coastline and it's surfers have been severely affected by this vile substance. However, one OB local escaped with only a mild coating and paddled a SHORTBOARD the morning of August 8th into the WR™ polluted waters. This hardy trooper prevailed against these difficult times and pulled some miraculous tiny rides and even some turns - a true testament to the indomitability of the human spirit. Hood's off to you, morning OB surfer!

If this is the spot I think it is.....

That spot only (truly) works on Southwest or West/Southwest,....and then it needs a middle tide. Very finnicky, but when it's on it's a real point break. The rock on the south part is frequented by many, but I prefer the rock reef on northern end. Long "soft" rights. One of the pictures is in front of the rock, but the others are at the point.

There was a tremendous landslide in the mid 90s (El Nino) that made the hike down very sketchy, but didn't dampen the potential for crowds...when it's good. That landslide was a textbook geological event, that must have been amazing to witness (seen by only a few deer, bobcat, and some birds of prey).

Don't get me wrong... I love how you bring the stoke & you seem all about positivity, but I think you can do all that without naming spots...

speaking of getaways... a friend of mine is moving to the north shore in a few weeks and will be starting from scratch in getting setup, so I thought I'd see if any of you heads had connections there or info. (apartment/room rental for a few weeks/months, bartending gigs, etc..) I have the feeling some of you have lived there? THANKS

Please mention nothing more of the spot in cloude's pics. Not that it is worth going there 99% of the time but I really don't want to see names or hints creating more hype about a spot that rewards few and does it infrequently.

first of all, shoutouts to j, because i would not have understood his last line but for watching bill and ted's excellent adventure in the car driving home from maine this week. party on, dude.

secondly, and lastly, a friendly reminder for all of you enjoying the surf in NorCal (when it's not flat): Next time you are catching waves at OB, be grateful that some lifeguard isn't trying to keep you within a 10 yard expanse marked off by flags on the beach, while you watch beautiful peaky peaks rise and throw outside the 'surfer's area'. I got busted yesterday for chasing peaks outside the boundaries... lifeguard paddled out on a paddle board and basically guarded the edge of the zone we were allowed to surf. at least the countless grommets of summertime (granted, some of whom RIP!) appreciated my Rebel attitude. and lifeguards go off duty at 5pm.

sorry about the spot naming cam.. in all fairness, though.. Moat Creek is mentioned in every guide book and also all over the internet.. i've checked it probably 6 or 7 times and i've NEVER seen it working.. maybe i've just been unlucky.. but.. i feel ok naming it. sorry if that's your spot and you've been feeling increased crowds there?? have you? is it even a real wave? i've seen the spot south of there working but never M.C. Well.. i watched a few mellow rights peel along but there were literally rocks sticking out all over the place.. making it pretty darned sketchy to ride.. maybe on really slow waves with a longboard or something? anyway.. i love the beach there.. i usually just end up beach-combing and checking the tide pools.. sorry if you were bummed to see that spot named in the report.. i'll try to refrain more..

The spot in Cloude's picks was my favourite Secret spot of my early surfing career.
I think that it has remained a 'secret spot' mostly because it is really nothing special wave wise.
It is a nice break, there is the longboard peak at the point and the short board peak at the rock.
But if it is epic there, it is epic lots of other places.

Still seeing those pictures on this site did not make me happy. I guess old habits die hard.

thanks dr. i.b. nude.. though.. i apologize for stepping on people's toes today.. that sucks.. people like friend #1 and cbarney have every right to be bummed.. i think i just might shut the fuck up about any spot-related mention.. my skin is too thin to have people harshing and feelin' angry and upset.. i remember friend #1 posting some purdy pics of ridiculous Ocean Beach on the surfer mag discussion forum.. probably a few thousand pairs of surfer's eyes saw those pics.. soo.. did that create more crowds at OB the next week? dunno.. all i know is that i thought those pics were sick and they stoked me on surfing and just appealled to my aesthetic sensibilities.. i'm a sucker for a picture of a beautiful wave..

but from now on i will totally refrain from ever mentioning a spot-name or posting pics of any wave in california other than lindy/ob/lane.. i can't take the heat and i don't want to.. it's not worth making people bummed out.

That place is already crowded enough with people splashin around, dirtying up the place...and for the diehards checkin it regularly (me included), we just don't need that kind of exposure. I really only enjoy that place when it's just me and buddy or you in there anyway.

e - it is all about selling out the search.

No one has a problem if someone like you, e, drives around a lot checking spots, and finds a spot that is firing. You invested, you scored.

If, however, you tell hundreds of people how you invested and scored, those people can score with no investment. Maybe you like that, but I guarantee that everyone else who is busy investing their time and effort into nailing surf spots is not too psyched about it.

Keep the search alive. Let people make their own investment into finding surf spots. And, let those who are already heavily invested reap the benefits. The search is an integral part of surfing, and ppl like Rank Byte should be drawn and quartered for their violations. When you go someplace new, grab a map and a compass. Watch the swells come in, and invest.

To recap - it is not really directly about crowding - it is about short-circuiting someone else's long and hard investment into finding good uncrowded surf. Really, it is about flushing their investment down the drain.

Blakestah, out of all seriousness, let me then ask you this: Is this not the same then as stating facts about OB to someone that might live in Hayward or Berkeley or the like looking for some waves? I think its time to get that malty beverage....

I tend to agree with you that if you explore you will find and that is the best way to go about it. "Don't use the crutch of others..." Check the PacWaveRider reports, it always say Lindy is 3-4 and fair when you and I know that the 15 mph NW winds that were howling last night say otherwise. If you use "that" crutch, you will get skunked. You deserve to get skunked.

But let's be rationale about this and good natured. If you make the investment, you should be rewarded. But I hope no one harps on my ass for the times when I drive longer then anyone (which is most of the time), get skunked and call my surf bros (on my cell phone of course) for a little "advice". Or if I take a picture where I stopped along the road 4 hours from my home, scored, and shared it with friends.

This is human nature and that can't be argued.

I dont' think blakestah is too curmudgeonly, he has a point -- I mean, the problem with guests is they often don't know how to behave -- unfortunately it's the American way. And if you get something for free, you often treat it with less respect. I was once in Lyons, where I went to see the Cramps, you youngsters may not have heard of them. I was with a very good friend from Davis. We were all tripping like crazy, and she proceeds to just empty the contents of her cooler on the sidewalk. I was like "What are you doing?" She replied "It's just a city." A little arab/french family watched us from their doorway but didn't say anything. They lived there. Presumably invested in the place with their day to day life, but for us, it was just the venue of a rock and roll show, where thousands of people passed through every night, and it didn't merit any particular care. I think blakestah is correct in that if you go to some trouble to find something, you cherish it a little more. The whole world could use a little cherish right now, french/arab ghetto or over utilized Moat. I'm not saying you shouldn't use names. I'm just saying use them with care. The problem with the web is not with your actions per se, but with the actions of your audience. You don't know who your audience is, so are you willing to take responsibility for their actions? You do know who your audience is when you call them on the cell...

those are good points blakestah.. i hear you.. i just didn't think i was guilty of any infraction today. i didn't tell anyone how i "invested and scored." just showed some random wave pics and said, "north of here". Before people chimed in i think that many readers probably assumed oregon or vancouver.. i mean.. i don't know what to say! i think that some people might be a little too sensitive about the reality of spot exposure and population dynamics.. it's one thing to name a spot and give directions and swell/tide/wind info.. it's another to post some pics that say "earth" for their location.

but.. i really hate to ruffle feathers and get people all bummed.. soo.. no more spot names or pics of california waves..

but blakestah.. aren't you a bit guilty yourself of short-cicuiting the investment of seasoned surfers? you basically educate the masses about swells and winds and weather.. i mean.. think about all those east-bay people that only come to the beach when blakestah predicts a swell..

as i was beginning to surf seriously in the bay area i used (and continue to use) your site to make decisions about where i'd surf and when i'd drive somewhere, etc.. your site acted as a tool within my search. other surfers where probably pissed when i showed up at the spot they had invested in.. simply because i read the buoy/tide/wind/pressure info on your site and made some easy decisions..

the weekend is almost here!!!! hope everybody finds waves and gives good love to their lovers and friends and dogs and moms and dads and kids!!

My post was not so much about that break E mentioned as the naming of breaks in general & not just by E...
It's a fair point that Bank Wright mentioned that particular wave in his book, which I obviously haven't read.
However, no-one is going to argue with the fact that surfing's populartity has changed since 1973, with differential impacts..
I've read every one of the posts on this site & I admire the stoke that E & this community brings. I have never met him but I'm sure that he brings respect & good vibes whenever he hits the water. The last thing I want to do is impact the positivity that he & others pass on thru niceness.
The thing is that this site has a lot of people checking it & it does create trends, one example being the change in attendance at that very yellow sanded break recently.
Also it's covered by search engines & some of the only surfing related references to certain Norcal spots are on this site.
E is also right in saying a picture of a wave is a great thing & a stoke inducing experience but part of what is great about surfing is also the search of unknown or semi unknown territory.
I think there's a difference between (a)showing a great image & (b)showing off that you know a particular spot by giving details, when it's in a public forum.
The picture today of the local wave was indeed inspiring but I don't think it increased anyone's stoke to give more hints as to it's location... maybe I'm wrong.
I think we have to accept some responsiblity as a community of surfers in a noticeboard who's readership is growing & I think one of these responsibilities is to leave explicit naming of less well known spots off the common discussion.

To tell you the truth, e, I've thought about not forecasting for a long time for those exact reasons. But I get nothing but love from the readers, so I sorta figure I am on OK ground. For some reasons surfers do not conceptualize reading buoys as part of the search, whereas driving is. It's not completely rational. I stay FAR away from naming spots, but try to nail the swell size/period/winds to the ground. I can understand very clearly from your perspective what it is like to have people appreciate and not appreciate your work.

But I'm going to start sticking to forecasting bigger days, and let the head high and under pass by. It's just too ugly when it is under head high. You'll notice this, I will merely state decent small rideable day until it gets well overhead.

And, btw, don't forget, I truly appreciate your work. Feel some love, smoke some green, and bomb on the Sector 9 this afternoon.

at first this was deja vu...then it was hilarious...then heavy...then hilarious...then heavy again...lots of philosophical jockeying...and now there seems to be a peace of sorts. daaaaamn, we all need to get outside!!! personally, i blame the lack of surf more than the mention of the location with that photo. when the waves are more abundant, things feel less scarce...know what i mean?

scored an epic session last night at pier 23...shot the pier, kicked out, and my bros threw me a basket of fry's for the paddle back out...all while this awesome salsa band was playing, it was sweet, all these sexy latina girls checking me out, i still smell like boats though...and if those are picture's of moat island or whatever going off y'all can keep it...(im sure it was fun that day though)...i hear san quentin and Pac Bell point were going off during that south as well..SSHHHHH...he he...have fun up north E!! and have a good weekend y'all hope too see you in the water...

OB is ok, but don't mention a street. Lesbo Bar is totally fair game because it sucks even when it's good. "Yellow sand" beach is off limits cause it's only good sometimes, even though a hundred surfers check it every day. No pics even without names....?

actually, i still believe e is phD student and this whole forum is just a sociological study. you'll notice how e periodically introduces potentially controversial variables (in this case identifying sites) into his posts. i believe he's studying how the introduction of certain variables affects the social behavior and interactions of the group. damn, e, you had us going.

ok, so just saw that pic you posted saying hopefully your mendo poster. we came around the bend last weekend at like 12:30, driving from the airport to the beach, two biiiiig farkin' elk chillin half in the road, half on the side munchin' some vittles of some sort. HUGE antlers, i swear their asses were above the roof racks these things were so big! fortunately the brakes were working on the 'buru.

that would be ventura fairgrounds(dead show)..verry possible as c street is a huge point..right in front of there...sorry ventura locals...

If I don't score tomorrow, I won't call anyone on my cell since I think I will be heading back to my secret spot that Cam claims he has a "map" of. I freakin hope not cause you might know more about me then you would ever want to know!

Blakestah - what about the investment people make reading through 25 posts a day? In some ways this is a surf community for SF - and part of the search has always been learning by hearing what other people experience. Which is not to say there isn't a certain etiquette that needs to be respected - but collecting bits of information and piecing them all together as you build up your ability to know when it might be good out - isn't that what it's all about?

And E - please, please don't criticize blakestah's forecasts. What are you thinking - do you want him to stop?!?! I still remember a perfect afternoon session a year ago where I blew out of work at about 3:00 because of a forecast for a short burst of swell. I definitely agree that the swell forecast should get nothing but rave reviews. (and I like this site a lot too E)

It's almost fall, thank god.

Just got back from the first show of "Step Into Liquid" here on Oahu. The film rocks... there was over 100 hours of footage they cut down into 1 hr 45 min. It was a great movie mixing big wave tow-ins and funny travel stories. A must see! Just bummed there's no surf on the south shore right now. Hope you all get some tomorrow. We are supposed to get a small bump from the south in the morning, but the trades are ripping things up. Yes, even paradise sometimes has marginal conditions.

Wow - swell peaked at 4ft 10sec in the middle of the night - for about 3-4 hours only. Weak.

I'm about ready for fall, too. Flatness pervades.

okay, sorry to arrive to the party late, but i hope a few read this. one of the ironic points from the photos that were posted somewhere north of here, is that it looks WAY better than it was in the photos, i didn't even get one decent ride. not that there weren't any, but the waves in the photos just looked nice from above and that's why i took them and e shared them.

now posting a spot without a name, it seems in our circumstances here, the only threat of migration is those who already know the spot. one of the reasons this spot doesn't get all that crowded, but it can, is because it's fickle as hell and when it's good, the whole damn coast is also firing. i had a good friend who scored is so good one day, he checked it religously for a year, probably close to daily, well it was never as good as it was that day. i was surfing a spot about 3 years ago that if i mentioned it, nobody who give a rats ass because it seldom has a good wave, but it was firing and a guy who had lived there ten years hadn't seen it do that in that part of the beach. that was one of the best sessions of my surf career.

i will also mention, i refuse to surf this spot alone due to the whitey factor. i know most of you won't give a shit about this, but i was in the water during the most recent attack at bolinas last year and being that close is a serious reality check.

ps: now if the dude who elbowed the hole in my board at your favorite SM secret spot shows up the next time my super fickle favorite spot is firing...

i want to NOT give props to the asshole(s) who burgled my car at the secret south spot on sunday morning.

i will take a piece of the blame, as whoever did this must have watched me hide my key. i am a foolish, trusting soul. but i hope these jerks catch the juju coming their way. and i hope the rest of you have no such experiences when attempting to scrape up residue windswell. (blakestah, i should have listened...how many times have you heard that, i wonder? saturday am was it.) anyway: whoever did this was idiotic enough to riff through everything and hide some of the "valuables" that were inside...so we found most of what we originally thought was stolen. so cool, whoever did this...such a creative mofo. grr.

the best part: i was coming back to the lot with a broken board. the tail snapped off my stewart in what can only be described as a complete fluke. so already the day was going well.

Hey, does anybody have Alex's number on hand for board repairs? I need a board fixed up!

well, i surfed m--- c---- many times when i lived in mendo, and i don't know what the fuss is about. it pretty mediocre when compared whith the reef breaks in santa cruz, and it takes twice as long to get there from the city. it gets good sometimes on a HUGE south swell (think over ten feet), but there's a million closer places to the north and south of the city that are as good or better, and don't have gnarly mendo locals on it. mentioning its name is not going to really change the scene. really, who's gonna drive three hours to TRY and get a fickle mushy wave that has rocks poppin up all over?

RE: Localism, Spot-Naming, Etc.

I drove all over on Saturday and Sunday and returned dry. Saw a lot of secret spots that aren't so secret, known spots that aren't so secret and spots that break once every few years that aren't at all secret. There are no seceret spots here. Let it go. Don't advertise like mad but there is no reason to get bent when Bank Wright broke the story nearly thirty years ago, anyone can get a topo map of the coast let alone check out the pictures of the coast on line and pick out likely spots. It is rough when spots like Deadman's are so crushed but there is more out there....

Read through the Sunny Garcia interview and saw the show a couple times and am still unimpressed. Having grown up in Hawaii I know how insular it is there- people often have no idea what the outside world can really be like. I know I didn't when I moved to the mainland. His comment that once a year all the idiots in the world descend on the North Shore was hard to take. Having lived off Sixth St. for more than a decade I can assure Sunny that there are still plenty of idiots that aren't in Hawaii come November. Two weeks ago the awful shooting of the kick-boxing instructor, last night an insane hit and run, general crack-headed destruction; all within sight of my shop and home. This is idiocy, this is localism's upstaging. When we go surfing it is supposed to be fun; an escape from our stresses. Let's remember that there is much worse out there everywhere all the time. Let's be respectful of our abilities, others and our environs. Let's see where that takes us.

I'm definitely late in responding to this, but when I read stuff about the Creek up here on the North Coast, I cringed. Out of respect for those of us who surf the more "uncharted" areas, please don't give out spot names when it comes to spots north of Marin... even if guidebooks and such give out a pletheria of information. Don't add to it.

I've surfed that place on occasion. It's bad enough that the Santa Rosa crews come up and invade the lineups. Adding more to it is not very cool.

As others have said... let them seek out spots on their own. Names are like roadmaps in themselves.

By the way, the break that got this whole discussion started is protected with funds from both Surfrider and the Nature Conservancy. It's on a tiny sliver of land, and now it's part of the public trust.

this morning's good intentions were dashed by the magnetic pull of pillow point. legs like lead following last night's crushing mountain bike ride. got into the office and found condition reports indicating that there's likely some fun to be had out there. anyone get some?

OB: Yup, people were out this am, and out now, too. Nothing epic - it's kinda textured, mushy or mushycloseout...but surfable. Lil' swells coming in straight to the beach or suprise, angled from NW. Maybe up to shoulder high? Fog almost burning off, air temp warm. Peeps surfing really relaxed. One guy out on a bright green board right now, especially smooth turns, soulful style.

..last eve was really mellow, and beautiful too. Sunset coming down and diffusing the light,dolphins leaping, birds diving for supper..and a few surfers again looking really relaxed *key Hawaiin music *. Especially noticed that they were sitting spaced apart, instead of clumping up...cool...

Point IF has really kicked my ass [ so sorry no pics ]...you thought OB gave ya a pounding...can't wait to get back in the water, but hooey after 2-3 weeks it'll be like starting from scratch again! got some fun ones. i paddled out at ob this morning before most people, including surfers, were out of bed. found a nice peak and surfed it solo for about 45 minutes before a crew of about 10 came out and sat right on me. by the time i got out of the water around 8:00 the conditions had deteriorated. most waves were in the waist to chest range. occasional head high.

Swell seemed cleaner & better organised than the last few days, if a bit smaller. Waist to chest.
Just us & then 1 other guy in the water for almost an hour, then 2 other guys. Plenty of space & niceness.
Tons of sealions in the water. At one point a family (I think it was a family, I could see the resemblance) of 7 came up right next to me & the big daddazay alpha one gave me a bit of a shouting at. I paddled away, for some reason saying "it's coo mah bruthah" & he seemed OK with it.
I can't remember when I started doing this but I think of seals as good luck & sea lions as extra good luck.
Because I only had time for an hour in the water I went to bikram yoga for the first time in a while this evening. got pretty destroyed, think it's too intense to do both in 1 day, even after an easy sess.

I just got back from a 3 week trip to Costa Rica two days ago and I managed to score some great surf.

If you want a fun, heavy beach break in an amazingly beautiful place try Santa Teresa and Mal Pais. It's the sort of place people go to for 3 days and end up staying for 4 months! The locals are cool and it breaks on any tide.

i checked it for about an hour this morning while chatting with robme and mwsf. i'm sad to say it was not good.

surfed after work yesterday at cron. pretty much shit but i needed to get wet. wind wasn't bad, just not much swell to work with.

Adam normally shoots these out, but i haven't seen him post recently so thought i'd jump in with a "community service announcement" on his behalf...

...there's a beach clean up at Balboa this Sunday, 10 to noon.

biggsie - I wouldn't bet on the south Sat. Looks like steep windswell conditions to me - look for places that will receive 320-330 degrees well.

BTW, I am pretty good friends with the pwizardry master. He also did the Pacific Waverider automatically updating sites (the ones with arrows for the swell that alternate beaches). He is a good guy, a good waterman, and an outstanding PERL wizard.

Made the new UFO today. It's come a long way since we had the first niceness test - we are now on generation 3.

Saw Step Into Liquid last night at the Embarcadero. Excellent flick. A bit hokey at times, a painfully bad soundtrack (in my opinion), but otherwise a great look at surfing.
