Thanks OB!

Lerm and i woke up at the butt-crack and surfed the beach. Relatively glassy sea-surface. Calm wind. It proved difficult to check the situation from the highway as the fog hung low and thick. The 2.5ft 17sec 190 degree south swell offered up about 7 sets during our hour-long session... at least we think it was the south swell!?! Glassy, walled-up waves would sleuth in... looking all gentle and fun-loving.. and then just suck-up and detonate on the shallow sandbars. Biggest waves a few feet overhead.. most waves shoulder/head-high.. The fog and absence of wind created a still, calm, eery environment... From the road you could just make out dark slabs of wave out in the water.. you couldn't really perceive their specific shape or breaking dynamics. Anyway Lerm paddled out a minute before me and on my way out i see him paddling like mad into this gruesome, doubling-up, thick, backless, ugly beast of a wave.. he takes off and just gets tossed over the falls into the bowels of the darkest, soul-munching, angry, spitting black barrel.. D'oh! A great session all in all.. plento-o air-droppy racy rides along zippering, chiseled, glassy walls.. Tons of close-outs so you had to be picky.. We watched some other dude get a solid in-and-out barrel.. he let out a yelp upon exiting.. I was looking for the barrel but couldn't will myself into that green cathedral of mystical succulence. The waves seemed to die down at the end of our session.. I'm also not sure if those sets were the south swell or just windswell sets?? but.. i'm pretty sure they were the south... anyone??

cool.. yesterday was awesome at OB too.. i walked from my new house to my new local spot along the beach... in my wetty so there was no turning back... had a fantastic session about 100 down from what seemed like an Asian surf contest?? About 15 asian surfers were sitting on the beach watching and judging alternating heats of 4 surfers in the water.. they had whistles and flags and seemed to be having a great time.. good vibes too!!! I want to give a shout out to all the asian surfers out there.. from my time in indo to the japanese heads at our local points (watched them puff-tough before paddling out one time) to LHAG (long-haired asian guy) to Stan to Dr. Deni and many others.. the asian surfers are generally super chill and toss around the good, non-aggro vibes.. nice work fellas!! .

It also looks like a few hurricanes are finally tracking toward the east coast.. Fly right east coasters!!!

In lamer news.. check this post from J
"super bummin' tonight, HORRIBLE end to the long weekend, hopefully somebody here can help. the straps on my rack broke on I-5 north of LA and my nearly new surfed maybe 5 times 9'8" pintail was sent flying off my racks. board was about 1/4 mile behind me on the far left side of freeway by the time i pulled off (i was in the process of pulling off on right as i heard the straps go *POP*). couldn't get across all the lanes on foot (4 lanes going 80+ mph) so hopped in another car to get on the highway other direction, hop over median to grab board. as we're coming down on ramp somebody had pulled off, picked up my board in it's bag and took off. got back to my car and tried to catch up, but by then they had a good 2 minutes on me, there was no chance. i'm hoping either some reader out there was the person who happened upon my board, or know of someone who did (9'8" becker malibu supersport, volan glass, rootbeer brown res tint on bottom/rails, tan deck) and will be willing to return it to it's rightful owner for beer and karma points. 650.219.4088 if you have any information, thanks."

e - thx for posting my amber alert. still super funked this AM. in the process of trying to find shop sites/fax numbers to send a little flyer to.

hopefully all the niceness crew got some good surf this weekend. at least my last memories of the board are 70 degree water and fun little waves!

Got in an hour session yesterday. Doncha just love it when it gets up to head high, and about 2/3 of the peeps in the water don't know they'd be having more fun someplace else? I watched endless missed drops, falls, late-suck-over-the-tops, bad duck-dives, etc. If I can only convince them that they will in fact catch far more waves in pollutica...

And I ran into VFW dawn-patrol ripper, who was doing his usual thing, but this time I seemed to match him in wave count on the 6'3" UFO. He kept looking at me kinda funny as I kept catching waves.

I UFO'd a friend's board last night. ;) Should be cool, the start of a revolution. He will be the second person to have a UFO. I also discovered some of the same ideas for the UFO were used in the design of the America3 racing sailboat rudder. Kinda cool to think that an MIT aerospace prof thinks about rudders the same way I do.

John Schultze should be done my other, new, 6'8" UFO, ANY DAY NOW. ANY DAY NOW, JOHN.

fun waves this weekend even though didnt look that good(yesterday afternoon at least)..looked fun this morning at around 9 but had to go to stupid work...the tide seems lame around lunch time and after work..but maybe..

j, sorry man that shit sucks..

ill second that asian surfer prop giving(?)..
(kind of a related note)..extra DVD review...finally bought one, "Drive thru Japan"..4 hats, recommended, a little to much talking, and of course more than half of the sountrack was weak..looks like good waves and good vibes in Japan...probably expensive though

Posted by: bagel at September 2, 2003 11:08 AM

j, that sucks. i hope your board finds its way back to you straightaway.

blakestah, that was a nice point about people having more fun where/when they can actually catch waves...because it's so freaking true. this is something that surprises me continually about newbies wanting to surf big OB (being a newbie myself). we all need to push ourselves, but it's a helluva lot more fun to get rides and learn and be stoked than it is to get slamdunked in the name of ego. i appreciate that you made this point in a niceness sort of way. which is not to say that you are accepting of lousy etiquette or kookiness in general (as some have understood 'niceness' in recent weeks), but that you didn't have to be a jerk to make a point.

had a fun 1 1/2 at gahhuoykra this a.m. around 8:30 to 10. the spot name is encrypted using a simple shift cipher. I just got through reading "the code book" (great book by the way) and decided that I would encode the names of the places I surf. Yes, I am a complete geek. I am aware of this as my wife reminds me of this fact every day. Anyhow...if any of you are so inclined, see if you can figure out where I surfed. It's a common place that everyone knows. I have excluded spaces between words. Email me if you can figure it out.

Sounds like everyone had a good weekend, with the exception of j. j, hope you find that board!

blakestah...does the UFO work on any board type? Do you have FCS versions??? Schultze is shaping a board for me currently and I am curious.

Posted by: jdz at September 2, 2003 11:54 AM

The UFO is untested on longer boards as yet, but I have a lotta confidence it will work. It is more of a replacement fin system than something that will work with an existing fin system. There is a version in SF Surfshop if you want to see it. I think John is in today, not finishing my board.

The one thing I am quite sure will not work well with the UFO is a classic longboard. Those things use anchors for fins, and the UFO is designed to be optimal at turning with minimal drag. It is a fast fast system than can turn hard, but it is not good when you really want a boat anchor for a fin.

If John ever finishes my 6'8" I'll be happy to let people try it (and/or the 6'3").

Friendly, I like it when less experienced surfers crowd the water on head high days. It makes my life MUCH easier. There are few things more frustrating than having it crowded with really good surfers - then you cannot get a wave. But, surround yourself with a half-dozen beginners, and you'll score plenty of waves. It's all good, with enough practice landing larger waves at OB comes around.

Posted by: blakestah at September 2, 2003 12:16 PM

jdz.. by the amount of letters and by you clue-ing us into the fact that we know the name of the break.. i would guess ocean beach.. but.. I'm not sure how the two h's in a row within "gahhuoykra" sync with the "e" and the "a" of ocean beach... i don't think that shift ciphers alter the shift amount with each character of a phrase? soo.. the break name should have two of the same letter in the third and fourth positions.. hmm.. dunno.. i gotz to get some work done here..

Got some for the first time in 6 weeks. Saturday morning at pachoo. promised myself only three waves as a test for my shoulder (tendonitis). Three sucky waves. Over the falls drops but made them. Last wave got some good air and went for number four. Over the falls drop. Nose dive into a side swell. Tail of the board slaps the back of my right arm like a nun with a paddle. Purple, black, red, and blue from arm pit to elbow. That's a first. Went out on Monday. No problem.

Hey, OB Toberfest Oct 4th. I'm meeting with some folks prolly at Mad Dog Wed nite - 8PM. Drop me an email if you can make it. I'll confirm time and place.

Nice jdz. I grabbed dinner at Beach Chalet last night and headed over to 'gahhuoykra' afterwards. Surprisingly good waves coming in despite the wind. Big crowd scene though.

Posted by: mwsf at September 2, 2003 12:32 PM

blakestah,
Just remember, there is an inverse correlation between the number times one asks John, "When's my board gonna be done?" and how quickly he completes said board.
I am doing some serious chillin' (literally - with ice packs) this week, hoping a BAD flare-up of an old back injury calms down before the real Ocean Beach wakes up. I need time to get in shape!

Posted by: Jimmie at September 2, 2003 12:42 PM

E's right about the two letters next to each other. Ocean beach is wrong - or at least not specific enough.

Jimmie, the latest casualty was comic. John went to install the newest fin system, and the guys at the glassing shop all stopped work to talk about the UFO. He never got the router started. Bob Miller (spent 3 decades shaping) thought it was theoretically sound, but wanted to reserve further judgment until he could ride it. Schultze wants to ride it also, but he doesn't ride anything smaller than an 8 ft funboard. So now he is waiting for their "best guy on the router" to cut out the hole for mounting. I got a new fin system waiting for John, but he'll take a few months before he would even put it in a board for himself!

I live by the surf shop, coded the html for their website, and have to walk by everyday, so I never miss an opportunity to needle John. It's all in good fun. And, actually, recently there has been a re-appearance of a shop employee who looks like his Dad takes him to Indo too often...

Hey wait - I got the code. The two h's are coded for ls, the g is a c, we could start a Wheel of Fortune here. Actually, mwsf's post clued me in.

Posted by: blakestah at September 2, 2003 12:53 PM

I guess one should only push the post button once - even if it takes awhile. Sorry.

Posted by: steve at September 2, 2003 12:53 PM

nice work people! I have to give credit to friendly who emailed me the correct answer first and MWSF who also got it. I really didn't think anyone would bite.

blakestah...I was specifically talking about semi-gun type boards...about 7'6". Oh, and I too will be in the J. Schultze board holding pattern. Supposed to be finished next week. I'm holding my breath starting...now!

Posted by: jdz at September 2, 2003 01:18 PM

i got an idea...there's been a lot of discussion on this board about all of the lurkers reading e's posts and then clogging up the lineup. Here's what we do...e encrypts all spot names with some sort of cipher (tbd). The only way to decipher the codenames is with a key (think Enigma). The only way to get the key is to pass some sort of initiation...something like picking up 20 pounds of trash from OB or paddling out and displaying proper surf etiquette in front of this sites witnesses...or doing some kind of good deed, or running naked from kelly's to VFW's? You get the idea...then only those with the key will know where e has surfed.

Yep...it's official, I have waaaayyy too much time on my hands right now. I better go back to work before the wife tears me a new one.

loved the dial soap post, but also wanted to note that there is a legit health crisis within the jam band fan base this summer:

Hepatitis A outbreak among concertgoers
"Officials suspect poor hygiene is the culprit."
http://www.oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,1413,82%257E1865%257E1539576,00.html

got back this weekend from a 10-day trip to oahu/kauai. surfed 17 times, but only saw decent size for 2 sessions, and the sets were very sporadic on those days. first trip to HI so it was kinda disappointing, but it was otherwise great - snorkeled with turtles, hiked na pali, drank rum, ate rumbatan and found the kind.

highly recommend "kimo's yurt" for accomodations in Haena.

http://www.pacifier.com/~cstaube/yurt.htm

was at least lucky to catch a tiny northwest swell while staying there, surfed tiny tunnels, already plotting my return.

tough getting back into the fog and the 4/3 but was delighted to find that ob was working over the labor day weekend. hit vpsex for the incoming tide Sun & Mon, then the outgoing this morning, my what a difference.

planning to order my fall board this week, possibly from Greg Sauritch - anyone have any experience with him/his boards?

Hm if lineups near my place are so crowded, we could just stick a gigantic "SURF PERMITS SOLD HERE, $5" in the kitchen window. ;)

Good points, friendly and blakestah - though I'm of the school that gets oddly stoked getting pounded 'round these parts. It's not ego so much as the very wishful theory no matter what goes down, I'm learning *something* hahaha! . Last time in Ptown, one guy was leashless on a longboard, would paddle into a group, take every wave he could and his board would fly - tried to stay away from him but he was all over, it was so dangerous. I figure I'll get just as many rides at common sense-sized OB, plus my main concern is getting in folks' way- here there's enough safe space that my farked duck dives and nose plants can have plenty of room. ..not to mention make laughs for fellow surfers ;)

Off for a bit. Happy surfing, folks...

oh yeah, for everybody out there, i'd put some sort of way to get ahold of you in your board bags - business card, permanent marker w/ cell phone/email address juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust in case something like this ever happens to you and somebody with good intentions finds it. i've called thule to discuss the issue with them, since they were *BRAND NEW* purchased friday straps i was using. blah.

J.. but.. i mean.. didn't you basically see someone pull over and snatch your boards? and then take off with them?? It doesn't sound like someone just wondered over and picked them up.. with the intent to return them to their owners..

sucks homie!!! really sucks. .

Posted by: e at September 2, 2003 02:37 PM

There are notable differences in my point of view between beginners and kooks. It's not about ability as much as it is about attitude and courtesy in the water. Kooks get in everybody's way. They snake people. Drop in on you if they think they can get away with it. Kooks try to pull off low percentage manuevers in front people paddling out-putting them at risk. Kooks suck. Beginners don't.

e - yup, i did, that's just me being delusional, like when a loved one dies and you just don't want to believe it!! i mean, what kind of sick F steals a surfboard? good God....but yeah, they pulled up, grabbed the bag o'lovin' and got the F outta dodge!

Got back late last night from a week of surfing the playa. Always amazed at the people and art at this extraordinary event. "Surfing" the massive slabs of granite at the Temple of Gravity was a mind-blowing experience. Now I need to get in the water to re-hydrate my body...

tons of evening fun out in SF the last few nights.
I've been fired up all weekend. chunky grinders coming through...yessireebob. Didn't the swell make for a great LD weekend? not to mention the inland sun, music and brews...
good stuff.

Surfed xxxx (not OB) this morning & it sounds like today's OB drill- mostly closeouts in shallow water. Getting a little coverup & getting out on the first wave of the day put my optimism for the session up but most waves were not holding up- perhaps the south end of the beach was better, probably should have checked but the fog.... Still nice to get out a few days in a row. Hope something holds tomorrow.

Blakestah- I am super curious about the UFO. Gotta see it at SF. As a fabrication shop owner I am always curious about the tweaking of accepted objects....

See you all tomorrow am?

Blakestah,

Per your website, do you think that your "normal" readers are going what the heck is a "Flying Chimp board?"

South seemed kind of weak. We need some NW lovin'.

Posted by: dano at September 2, 2003 05:33 PM

bagel....ocean beach maryland is only a couple of hours away. would be worth the drive for good swell. funky east coast beach town, big open beachbreak.

Posted by: tucker at September 2, 2003 05:48 PM

make that ocean city, md.

Posted by: tucker at September 2, 2003 05:49 PM

Having lived in Baltimore MD for 5 1/2 years, I feel comfortable saying it is not reasonably close to surf.

It is a little under 3 hours to the nearest break, which is not even a good break, when traffic is light. Often the roads are totally clogged heading to the beach. In 4-5 hours you can get to pretty good east coast surf (in 4-5 hours you can almost be at pretty good west coast surf, too).

It would be like someone on the EC saying "I am going on a trip to Sacramento - how is the surf?"

It ain't there.

Dano - I don't worry much about confusing the readers. As long as they get the straight dope on the surf forecast, I am pretty sure they don't care about other ranting/raving. What are they gonna do - stop visiting my ads?

Posted by: blakestah at September 2, 2003 06:44 PM

e, thanks for the continued stoke. been slammed with work in recent months and have only surfed on the weekends. surfing your site has been the main source of dry land inspiration. that and the past few days of surfing the very dry land playa of black rock city - inspiration of a high order indeed. btw e, thanks for the honourable mention on the asian thing. i remember a time a couple years back when a local site was overtaken by bloggers of negativity with racial undertones. the groundswell of positivity on the knitting report here should is so very precious - here's to the dream that it shall continue without end...
