E's Surf Report

word all! Cool sounds like more perfection today. Bummed I can't be out, but stoked to have a job ;) Going snowboarding tomorrow $10 Friday's at Boreal for people with college I.D. (all you graphic designers, this is where you come in handy ;) Anyway, everyone have a rad weekend. See some of you heads in the water hopefully!

That was really pleasant. I held down the other end of things from you guys, where a bar was nearly perfectly matched to the incoming niceness. Got several walls to hold up, and worked the UFO up and down and all around.

That board is the ultimate conversation starter.

I'm gonna sit here and ooze stoke for a while.

as you might have heard, e and i are doing a trip to central america. i'm wondering if anyone has any recommendation on airlines. steama said not to go through miami yesterday. i've seen TACA, AA, and Continental for reasonable rates. how's TACA? better/worse than US based airlines? any other connections that should be avoided (maybe San salvador)?

Again, the solid WOW factor for today. I will respectfully disagree with E on the size, the sets down at the south end were ever so slightly larger and meaty although sparse, patience was the key to victory today. Also it seems like everyone heard my cries of get to work because the crowd was about 1/3 the size today and i did find myself alone at a nice peak for the entire morning as i watched the crowds cirlce around 1 peak north of me and 1 peak south. good to be alone! needless to say my wave count was up from yesterday and the quality was super nice, not quite big enough for an all time day but SOOOOO much fun , mellow paddle, dry hair out to the peak and good drops with some workable shoulders, not totally top to bottom but thick enough to make it fun. on my way back north it appeared that pacheco was showing the biggest size as i saw someone drop in on a solid 3-4' overhead set. go get it its probably going to shut down again on the building tide.

the guy in the pic above is alex schaffer from aqua surf shop. total ripper. the long haired boogie guy also works at aqua but i can't remember his name. he makes films that show at the balboa theatre from time to time. nice pics bruce. do you mind if i put them on my site? i'll credit you.

i surfed the sloat shorey last night for about 45 minutes before dark. not very good becuase the waves were doubling up really weird, with two waves breaking about a second apart. a few nugs here and there though. dictators looked like the best spot but i was low on time.

i'm off to seattle tomorrow morning for a little v-day getaway. any recomendations on cool things to do up there?

Well, posse in effect again this morning and that always creates a good time out in the water. I have to defer any accolades that E may have given me back to both Christian and E as they got some solid rides out there! Christian mentioned he pulled a little airial action, SOLID! It truely is a pleasure watching better people surf.

Another great day out there. Get out and get some if you can.

On the board fares, here is what I know: Continential is the worst: $100 per board, each way. I got away with one-board charges both outbound and inbound to Bali from Hawaii even though I had 2 boards. United is pretty bad as well, $80 per board. With United, you can get away with $80 per board bag out of SFO for sure. The guys at the "odd sizes" stand are fairly lax about it and most likely will charge you only $80. Never paid more then $80 in any direction w/ UAL. In Hawaii, if you ask them to charge you for "excess baggage" instead of "surfboards" they go by weight and it is only $20 for a board but you have to ask. Southwest will charge you $40 per board, I think they are the cheapest. RULE OF THUMB: Be as courteous as possible. Also, as much as I hate to say this, don't look like a dirtbag when you check in. In a friendly discussion, the United guys told me that United charges for boards because "surfers" tend to buy the cheapest airfare. Also, they said they don't like to charge but it can cost them their jobs if they don't. Like anything else, be reasonable. To Costa Rica, I have only flown United and they used to waive the fees for International flights so you might want to consider researching that. That was pre 9/11 though.

I took a few trips on TACA last year and paid $50 for my board bag (multiple boards) each way. Not quite as nice as United, but probably more surfer friendly. Also no problems connecting through San Salvador, it's actually a pretty nice airport if you ignore all the machine-gun toting security dudes.

Alex's entry - hard to say if it is bigger than the Burle Mavs wave or the Waimea wave, but it is far far and away the most ominous pic of the paddle-in shots.

I just looked at the "other" angle shots of Alex's wave. I judge it as biggest of the paddle-in entries. Clearly larger than the Burle wave or the Waimea shot - when you compare to Wasylko's cliff-angle shot.

Hope he wins - that would be WAY cool for Alex.

bbr- Use anything from the site you want, it's just a hobby. That being said, I made $50 in advertising revenue in 2003. The way I figure it, the site will have paid for my 300mm lens by the year 2080. Of course, I'll be 124 so the celebration may be low key.

I'm bummed that I've been missng the a.m. sessions this week. By late yesterday afternoon the outside bars weren't working at all and I won't mess with the inner-bar deal, since almost becoming a quadrapalegic when I was drilled, headfirst into the bottom a couple of years ago. I ended up in pretty much tiny & dumpy conditions at the spot mentioned by e in today's main post - a disappointing contrast to Tuesday's surf at another location west of The Great Highway. Still, it was better than dental surgery. I'll hope for the best for today's late arvo surf.
e / lerm (and everyone else) DO NOT EVER fly Continental - thet will rip you off BADLY for board charges. They also have a bad habit of suddenly refusing to transport surfboards AT ALL entirely at their whim, regardless of any prearranged agreements. Needless to say, this can be disastrous! TACA is the best way to travel from the U.S. to almost anywhere in the western hemisphere south of Mexico - cheap, friendly, reliable.

the niceness crew rocks. you guys have got groovy positive energy. it's too bad much of the surfing world can't play as nice. even when we have conditions like this, some pigs can't get enough shit. as an outsider to the tight ob crew you all are I have a question.

does a dry hair paddle out matter anymore? if you see a guy make it out into the line-up with dry hair, do you drop in on him when he gets his first wave, becuase you don't know him and he has "no right to come out here and just catch any wave" or does the niceness crew offer mutual respect to a dry haired visitor who skillfully got themselves into position without aggression?

i don't really see how dry hair would even enter the equation. unless it's a dry mullet of course, in which case i'd give the dude any wave he wants just for being so metal.

Hit Pineapple-faced despot spot yesterday for the second sesch and again today, both in the lunchtime window. Swarthy man on a giant red gun was out there working it like a reef break that only he knew about. At first I thought there must be two guys with identical boards, but it turned out to be all him - strictly firepower. I mentioned him to a niceness-vibed sponger on my way in, and was informed that the fellow goes by the moniker of Bad Vibe Bob. He hust have made a deal with the devil or something, to get so many rides; endless rights, all the way from the muschy outside peak at M_____, carrying the ride over the dead spot and on to the mid-inside bar at Manny's.

It was getting kind of crunkly out there, with the breeze swinging south and west, but it was probably just the beach taking its now customary lunch break. All internet wind indicators are looking easty again. Carry on.

YAAAY...i think i saw you guys down there but i went out a little north where ive been chilling the last couple days..had a pretty frustrating session, wave repelent, a little claustraphobia, not being in the right spot, kooking all my turns. than thinking it was about time to go in defeated..these peaks start coming in. one comes right to me i pull into a roomy barrel so exited to be in there i think i pretty much just rolled fell off my board, i hate it when i do that! but im still high from bein in there..i couldnt go in after that, i spent about 15 more minutes out there and got 3 of my best waves of the last 3 days..still kinda kooked em but that shit made my day, seemed like it was getting better and more consistant...i gotta try to get a friday eve session in..

Have you considered buying boards down in Costa Rica? Last time I went, I picked one up from a guy at the south end of Playa Hermosa for $250, sold it back for $175, slightly worse for wear 6 weeks later. He has a ton of boards and would probably let you try a couple out.

Saves all of the airline hassle. I know a guy who would buy boards from surfers leaving the country on the way in... sand them down with some fine grain sand paper and sell them on the way out and make money on the deal. He is a real artiste with the glass, though. Anyways, it's another option to consider. How's the afternoon surf look?

You notify we scaredy cats when it's small and forgiving. (BTW, your reports rock- you should consider giving up your day job.)

E- Forgot to mention that I ran into Stinkeye when I was shooting the Volcom contest at the Lane on Saturday. He was trying to coax a couple of his pro clients on shore so he could take some water shots north of town. Talk about a humble, niceness kind of guy! His first movie will be coming out soon, so stay tuned.

If you can make it outside at OB on any day with dry hair, I highly doubt that would be a knock against you from anyone surfing the beach. Would you be dropped in on? In most circumstances, you shouldn't be dropped in on at all at the beach unless you are a dry-haired bouy. Now, Ole' Lindy is a different story...

Get ready - tomorrow is a warm-up - then the N Pac is going off the hook again - a series of close storms are supposed to rock the house next week - pretty much all week starting Saturday.

Yes, it was a joyous occassion this morning out with the niceness crew. Sweet weather, waves, and offshore wind. Fast waves tubing on the inside, lefts and rights. I just wish I could've stayed out longer. E was pigdoggin all over the beach, and lookin so stylie. He's got the crouch and positioning going backside for some serious barrel riding. And Kaiser was out there representin, taking on every bit of juice rolling his way. It was nice to see Christian racing down some speedy lefts too.
WARNING: There is a new shaper in town, and it's rumored that he shapes boards that smell of rotting phish. He shapes boards during full moons that would make Skip Frye excited.

bird. thanks for the advice! I would advise a similar plan for anyone heading to Bali. Tons of cheap, high-quality used boards in Kuta. However. Lerm and i aren't headed to Costa Rica.

3to5.. sometimes i'll get a wee bit peeved if somebody paddles *right* up next to me out at OB, especially if i've been sitting out there and there is tons of space and waves stretched along the beach.. but.. generally i'm way passive and wimpy in relation to other people so i'll just paddle away and let him/her have the spot if they want it. I dig when people respect those that have been out there longer and don't get all aggro for their first wave. but i would never drop in on someone to prove a point. Sometimes i'll kind-of internally smile if a more forthright surfer drops in on a newbie who is flagrantly violating an ethical norm. But generally i think that drop-ins suuuck.

i agree with BBR's assessment of the dry-haired/muletted factor. If someone represents the metal that definitively, they're deserved, imo.

i have a question regarding drop-ins. so a few days ago i am out at the beach for a while, getting plenty of waves. no problems. then comes along a huge closeout right, there is one guy around 30 feet deeper than me and one guy around 30 feet down the line as we paddle for the wave. i see this wave is going nowhere really so i just dropin basically made one quick move to the right and then straighten out as the whole thing unloads, while i watch the dude on the shoulder get a decent ride before it shuts him down. after the froth goes away and i surface the guy who was 30 feet deeper than me goes into a shit fit over how i dropped in on him. i basically said where were you going to go with or without me. he continues to rage on as i paddle away.

whats your guys take on dropping in on a closeout when there is someone deeper than you?

forgive the ignorance, but i can't connect the dots between a person having a dry head and deserving to be dropped in on. i had my first-ever dry hair on the outside experience tuesday, and i was just stoked to have zigzagzigged in the right places. usually i get my clock cleaned. it was totally novel!

but maybe i am totally missing what you meant, 3setsof7...sorry if that's the case. it was just real nice to paddle for my first wave with a warm head.

dsx. in my opinion. if someone is deeper than you, you have to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they're going to make the impossible.. but.. if they're definitely going to get shut down by the section and you're not going to interfere with their ride in any way (closeout barrel, move off the closeout, etc.), then i think it's cool to take off.

on a big closout wave like that it kinda sucked that he got pissed at you. was he in the barrel?

basically my rule of thumb is always, give em' the benefit of the doubt. I didn't one time at Hazzard Canyon. at the end of the ride i realized a guy was behind me the whole time. I thought i was meat-pulp for sure but luckily he was chill.

if he was in the barrel it wasnt for long. this was a typical inside bar OB closeout where the whole thing unloads for like 50 yards all at once.

i was kinda surprised that he went, i thought at first that i might have a slight chance and really went about 2 feet down the line, the dude behind me couldnt have gone more than that.

it to me appears that those who think they onced ruled the beach enter the water with the idea that they want to let someone have it. you could see the look in his eyes, that kinda stupid angry look, like what are all these people doing here i live at noriega and the Great HWY, this is MY spot damn it.

mulletts used to be the sure sign of a "valley" and always got heckled. of course those where much different times.

actually the violation happened after exchanging a pleasant good morning....and a few waves passing on through to the fellas. i always do my best to show respect to others in the water - karma happens. oh well, territorial pissings. who the f*ck am i anyway i haven't called the city home since 91.

like you e a few weeks back in my homeland at that pointbreak. i just felt a little violated as it's not often i can get a mid week am session with conditions as sweet as they are. kinda of a buzzkill boohoo. rock on!

You guys sure about the board prices on Taca? I just got a ticket to Costa Rica and both their website and the rep I talked to on the phone said it was $25 per board each way.

Had a niceness-esque moment this morning out along the middle aves - keeping to myself to ensure that whatever came my way would be all mine, then a pack of 4 surfers paddled down the beach and stopped literally surrounding me. Needless to say, I was a little peeved considering there were a total of 12 guys out for 4 blocks. BUT... just as a nice wave begins to rear up and one of the others is in perfect position, he gives me the nod to go -- now that's good karma!

friendly, a dry hair paddle out used to be a right of passage. it used to indicate that you had watched the sets, currents, surfers etc. and mitagted all that to earn a warm head until the ocean showed otherwise. maybe it's more of my old school entitlement mentality but i give props to anyone who pulls that off, without a jetski. in fact when i read your post. i was stoked for you as it's a huge achievement in one's surfing expereince. next up a dry hair barrell! and those inner bars don't make it any easier.

e, i surfed hazzard's once. upon returning to my car, not one but all 4 tires had been flatted.

i say if its TOTALLY OBVIOUS the guys not gonna make it (people are sometimes suprisingly fast) than its ok to go...i cant deal with not going than seeing the guy not make the section and the wave is wasted..have a niceness weekend..see you in the water

re: the drop-in, I usually watch a guy get closed out and then do a down-the-liner. That way I can say you didn't make that last one. Manana manana - serve it up mama.

Three things to add to the discussion about dropping in. It has a lot to do with the attitude of the guy inside. If he's one of those turkeys who hogs waves by being too far inside and not making it, I consider dropping-in very appropriate. Isn't wasting waves a sin?

The consistency of the break matters, too. If the same section has showed on the last few waves and nobody is making it, I vote for dropping in. Duh- maybe that's too obvious.

Last, and I guess this is a question for those of you who really know how to surf. Do you agree that dropping in accelerates the breaking of waves? I've been in a spot where I think I'm going to squeeze by a section but someone drops in and the section collapses. I know it's true for butt slappers. . . but how about overhead waves?

E's advice was best- when in doubt, don't go.

p.s. If it's your best friend, you HAVE to drop in to pay him back for that wave he stole from you in 1996. . . or was it '97?

Posting Friday since I was home with the Babe yesterday. I did get out for an hour or so before wifey left for work.

On the drop-in Question. Yesterday, offered a case study. One of those freighter lefts came through with me in the sweet spot, and another guy too deep. As we both paddled for it, I was thinking, do you really think you'll make this?? Anyhow, I pulled up just to see him pass below me in the pit. I then watched and saw that he had made it about 10 more yards before ending his ride. I could have rode 50.

YOU GOTTA GIVE THE GUY THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT.

At least for the first wave. If he keeps paddling for every wave, then you have to ask him to take turns.

Odds are he feels bad enough about not making it, and will give you the next one. If not he is a jerk and you don't want to surf near him anyhow.

There is always the Passive Aggressive aproach: After the set, say "that was a pretty deep drop you just had. I got the bird's eye view of you in the pit from the shoulder. Did you make it around that section?" Keeping your vibe complementary and not critical. When he says he didn't then say, "Oh that's a drag, maybe the next one."

He may even say, "I should have let you have that one but I was committed."

This is all from the reference of one who surfs the outside. The inside has a greater closeout ratio so the rules may be different.

357- At OB, a dry hair paddle out is more luck than anything else.

Yep, swarthy man here. THAT WAS ME surfing all four great days this week... pretty damn good. I've been surfing here for 20 yrs. now; took a break to Oahu in 2000, now this winter I am back. The scene here is different. Loads of new people living the OB lifestyle... used to be rare seeing crowds and such but who cares. The point is to surf until you drop. It is about the wave, not the scene or the clothes or the car or the board. THE WAVE.
