Entertain the sultanate and his entourage with vibrant, perverse dischordance. Flow up and over, radiate but don't syncopate. And.. just as you're comfortably numb, thumpingly glum... drop the hammer down into F harmonic minor. Immediately sear the cosmos with that hauntingly gothic scalar juxtaposition. The F harmonic minor is simply an F minor scale with a raised 7th. But.. don't underestimate the power and demonic quality of that one changed note. The spirit-essence of evil itself gets birthed in that jump from minor 6th to major 7th. Gut wrenching and morbid. Ring out the F and use the E as a tweaked reminder of universal asymmetry. Don't abuse the E.. maybe flit it in as an occasional reminder of all that is wrong and out of sorts in the world. Thunder out that minor 3rd and minor 6th.. let it growl and snarl. Rage upward and outward. Recall the ghost-filled, frightful mysteries of the Carpathian mountains. Imagine dark, slithering tendrils lurking at the corners of your vision. Imagine a vacuous, foreboding fog enshrouding the landscape. Maybe the demonic laugh of an evil clown, with a bit of blood drooling from its fanged mouth. Imagine screams crying out unbeckoned, unheard. The power of the end. The certainty of death. Blackness universal. Then.. just as the light has dimmed toward nothingness. Just as hope has been lost to dripping, sneering aggression.. set the gear back up into the fifth mode. Ring out the C. sing out the major 3rd (E).. triumphantly, happily, exhaustedly return to the region of happiness, faith and sunlight. Give in to the positivity of the minor 7th and major 3rd. Mixolydian triumphancy. But.. just as you're getting comfortable again. Just as you start thinking the world is all peachy and butterflies and rose pedals.. tickle that flat 2nd (Db). Remind the world that all is not rosy, all is not picturesque. Pain and strife intermingle with pleasure and hope.
let it all ring out. The spectrum of experience and emotion. The cycles of life. Exuberance and friction. Exultation and prostration. Anger and forgiveness.

e-Nice musings on modal theory. Calls to mind some of the better Dead jams during Blues For Allah period. I've been focussing on Piedmont fingerpicking blues for a while but your words almost make me want to pick up my axe again.
As for waves, last weekend was powerful and challenging at "Old Man's". Very fun until the rain came up Sunday afternoon. Haven't been out since but maybe mañana.
There was a very interesting right that was working Saturday morning south of the city. I only know of a few who have surfed it and it was empty except for some very large, very hollow rights emptying into a dry-hair channel. It's pretty isolated so I'm not gonna go there for my first time alone. It's fickle and there are often other places working at the same time but it is tempting. Any takers?

but.. sorrowfully.. i'm kind-of turned off my his apparent 'tude these days. I know i should just close my eyes and feel the music but i get this gruff, unfriendly, mean-spirited vibe from him and i don't want to support that vibe. Am i totally imagining things?

We surfed LMar on Sunday in those howling offshores and driving rain - it was actually fun. Saturday, I was by myself and saw some perfect waves by the Pacifica pier as well as in front of the trailer parks - it was big, but manageable, but alas since I was alone, didn't have the courage to tackle it. The waves in front of the trailer park always look decent - have you surfed that stretch of coast much?

Surfed alone in front of the pumphouse for the first 45 minutes before someone else paddled out down the beach a ways. Saw him get a decent right he milked into the beach for a teeny head dip at the end. One other guy way down by the boatdocks as I was getting out, 4 or 5 more suiting up in the parking lot but it seemed like the wind was picking up.
Had a good time. Low expectations being the key to life.

I watched as the image of my wife chopping vegetables for our supper shimmered within the rhythm of the tabla, transforming her into a sari-clad, golden-bangled kitchen-diva at an earthen hearth preparing puja for some timeless feast. I staggered down the hallway disturbed and amazed as our Richmond District flat morphed into a Mumbai warren, complete with snake charmers, chillum-puffing sadhus and betal-nut wallahs. What was happening to me? I hadn’t hallucinated like this since ’69! I stumbled into my son’s room where the throb of vintage Metallica, thankfully, brought me back to my senses.
“What’s up, Pops?”
“Er, ah … I think dinners almost ready,” I shakily managed to reply.
“O.K. ask mom to turn down the stereo and let me know when it’s safe. That religious music freaks me out.”
“Yeah, I, uh … know what you mean…”

There was a rainbow over OB when I woke up this morning. Then I found out an acquaintance/very helpful, kind person to me had died. Speaking of cycles of life:

Look up, another boat hauling ass. Dammit, I'm trying to work here. Police car. Great Highway clogged up. Coast Guard helicopter. Man dangling from helicopter. Man dangling again from helicopter. Hello, you are right outside my front window. Hm, maybe I can sketch the helicopter. Guy on top of giant ladder (firetruck?) More helicopters tossed up in the sky. Concentration blown. Time to walk dog.

Sailboat Capsizes Off Ocean Beach

A sailboat capsized off San Francisco's Ocean Beach Wednesday, sparking a massive search and rescue effort.
Three people were apparently on board the craft, and at least two were pulled out of the water and taken to the hospital. The search continued at 3:15pm Wednesday for the third person.
The situation started about 2:30pm, when the San Francisco Police Department got a call about a boat in trouble. A small craft advisory was in effect Wednesday, with high swells and heavy winds reported. The water temperature was about 53 degrees.

I don't mind hiking to surf spots. i took a semi-friend/co-worker to a spot and we had an amazing dp day. a week later i was hiking back from a morning sesh and who was heading up the trail? yep, mr coworker with 4(!) friends along for the ride. He was 'afariad of sharks", so he brought along some friends (chum?): lesson 2.
the net has enabled all of us to share info freely and maximize our bounty of the wave potential offered by this amazing region, thanks in large part to this site. but somewhere we have to draw the line. OB, lindy, montara, jetty are all on the map, its the precious few remaining spots that require some work, some knowledge of conditions, some commitment to extrapolate the sweetness they offer. i feel strongly that the few that hike in to surf (NZ style) will double their solo surf potential. those that act quickly upon the ever changing conditions here in NorCal with the same vigor will do well also. but giving it away for free, getting the tounges wagging, will only serve to speed up the process of exponential surfer population growth at the places we are hopefully destined to enjoy in some sort of surf solitude in our lifetimes, crowd free.
My dad quit surfing Malibu in the 50's because the 12-20 guys out were enough to drive him south a few points. lucky him! now it takes more dedication and time to taste the the real deal sweetness of solo surf, you and your favorite board trying to find the the zone of a new spot, with no one to define the line-up, size, length of ride, rips, beasts in the water etc. Isn't that the core of surfing, an experience which touches your core? why create another cowells?

though I'm probably the last one to post tonight I have a response for searoom... Though I do agree that the core of surfing is an experience which touches your core, why must you have to do it alone? I'm not trying to start a flame by any means, and I do think secret spots should remain secret spots, because in the case where you took your co-worker with you and he went back with 4 people because of sharks.. That is obviously a dissapointment. BUT, on the other hand, we DO live in Northern California where large swells, cold and sharky waters are a big factor. Because, hey, surfing in San Diego a mile out to sea is relatively safe, even at night.. Do it ALL alone in Southern California, besides "No worries" down there.. Up here though I think it's a different story. I mean sure Jeff Clark surfed Mav's for 15 years by himself, and tried getting people out there, and it's a zoo now, but my point is, it's a shit load safer and people are pushing the limits of big wave surfing (if you want to look at it from the angle of progressive surfing, which I'm sure some will quible with). So I guess you have to compromise, is what I'm saying, because in my opinion (everyone is entitled, right?) I would rather have some other people, preferably friends, out with me on a day where I'm pushing my limits. (which would probably be a waist high day :) Also, to take someone to a "secret" spot with you, they should probably be some pretty damn good friends in the first place, and you know you can put your faith and trust in them (for me at least). but, it's not liek I have any secret spots to share with anyone anyway, so I'm not as sensitive to the revealing of secret spots as some on here, in fact I'm all for it ;) share the stoke everyone.. haha, hopefully you catch some of my sarcasm.
On another note I was doing my taxes online when someone came knocking on our door. A lady, frantic and worried told us she needed to use the phone to call 911. Her male friend, 43 yrs. old over dosed on heroin pretty much in our front yard in some bushes. We let her use our phone and stayed with her until the ambulance, fire truck, and 2 police cars showed up. I'm glad we could help them, but it's scary to think people are shooting-up in front of our house. (My dad's truck has been broken into 3 times already) beats me if there is a connection. I'm glad she came here and not a house that may have turned her away.

We all know it's the sport of natural kings? Why not spread the joy, and provide some underwater habitat as well? I know about sand transport, littoral drift, blah blah. I say pick an area and do it. Waves come and they go. Surf spots will do the same. Accept it and move on. Share the stoke with a friend, but maybe try picking your friends wisely.

I am far away from my home on Oahu sitting in Kuala Lumpur at the COP7 meeting (Convention on Bio Diversity). This seems a far cry from the niceness discussion and stoke on surf, but this international, global convention helps protect the places in the world we all wish to visit and surf some day. I have been focusing on the marine and coastal protected areas along with invasive species. Anyways, I just want to thank the niceness crew for their stoke on surf, life and music that has kept me going day after day of 15 hour plus negotiations. Mahalo!

Waves were coming in bunches, thick little barrels, with really sandy, murky water (which was freaking me out given the location and seals coming in & out of B Lagoon). Anyways, caught five waves, then the wave just disappeared......was so stoked. It would have been great to share with another surfer or two - one could call it a secret spot perhaps, have to wait and see when it works again...
