Fresh, post-rain sunshine.
Rebirth and renewal
Crisp, pungent, clear air
Large, daunting waves at OB

Men Who Ride Mountains vying for aquatic supremecy on gargantuan waves.
right now.
Sheltered spots maybe offering surf during the early afternoon low-tide?
All SF beaches still posted with unsafe levels of ecoli/fecal-coliform/hep-a/etc.
This multi-cultural burg teems with life on a friday morning.
What evolutionary circumstances produced the differing facial features, skin tone and hair color of the various races?
Music, mythology, law and language all cross-cultural common denominators.
And love? Does the ideal of romantic bliss exist throughout all cultures? Is love for most born of convenience and expectation? "yes son, it would be expedient for you to wed this women, she is stout of body and comes from a well-bred family." Or do people in all places hold out and wish for that celestial, heart-racing, symbiotic, resonating dream partner? Is that idea a western export? Does that reality exist for anyone? Can blissful, mutual, extravagent love persist and continue over the years? It seems that humans are both social and individualized beings. It also seems that there are no fixed standards for how one should exist. The human animal is psychologically flexible. Change over time is absolute reality. Therefore we're hard-wired for change at every moment, every day. Neurological pathways blend and reshape to learn new thoughts, new lessons. Muscle memory forms both for disciplines such as playing the trumpet and surfing a wave as it does for psychological coping mechanisms for such things as ingratiation or lonelyness.
waiting for my smoothie this morning i heard INXS "new sensation." Thought about Michael Huchings committing suicide.
riding my bike through the pan-handle i swerved around two dogs happily playing and chasing each other around.
Waiting at a stop-sign on Divisidero a black man crossed the street in front of me, he gave me a nod of acknowledgement, then i noticed the unmistakable aroma of ganja billowing from his area... a giant blunt sticking out of his mouth.. at 8:45 in the morning.
Turning onto market at 6th street. The usual slimy characters and bedraggled street urchins moaned and twitted. A European tourist girl looked around, lost and fearful.
these observations have no purpose or point.. just regurgitations and rememberences. vain attempts to form meaning. paultry attempts at isolating meaningful moments from the white noise of existence.
anyway.. SURF!
hope everyone has a raging weekend! I might be cruising up to the bodega area to join in the final session of Daily Dale Webster's 27 year voyage to surf everyday of the lunar cycle. crazy shit!!! daily dale is a real underground hero!
Here's to another 27 years for Dale. or.. maybe here's to a few weeks off for Dale!? ha!
Sydney (pics from the sydney morning herald)
Hawaii is getting rocked by a wicked rain/wind storm with kona winds (SW winds). The swell is picking up later today. There's a chance the Eddie might have a chance to be run later this weekend as the waiting period ends 2/29. I hope Kaiser makes it to Oahu today... nice weather he's bringing from SF :) Have an aloha friday!
Posted by: bagus at February 27, 2004 10:53 AMlooks like noah johnson, tony ray, ross clarke jones, and kelly slater declined their invites to the contest. (are all supported by quicksilver?)
shawn barron got nailed, rescued, ER'd with a broken eardrum early in heat 2.
according to christian, information is tough to gather due to the limited budget of the event.
waves are inconsistent but there are "bombs" every now and again. good news is that the media is covering the event so it can only get better next time.
Posted by: tom at February 27, 2004 11:04 AMWCT pros (or maybe ASP pros) had a conflict in attending - the tour requires a fee be paid for its surfers to compete elsewhere, and Clark wasn't paying any fees. So, Kelly didn't go. Don't know what happened to T Ray and Ross Clark-Jones, probably they didn't like prices on flights to get into town.
We need more Christian updates!
Posted by: blakestah at February 27, 2004 11:07 AMe- on your question about Exstatic Love in other cultures, I think it is heavily tied to the Mythos of that culture.
For insight about your own feelings of Love as a Westerner, I would recommend reading He, She and We by Robert A Johnson. These are three separate books.
They are not the definitive word on the subject, but they are short, easy to read and thought provoking. Not without insight.
I found them helpful back when I had to reexamine my relationship of 20 or so years.
Posted by: Friend #1 at February 27, 2004 11:15 AMe or dave blake....give christian a call and post a brief report.
i'm gonna go surf some lefts and would like to check in later for an update here if you guys are in cube city, why not, right?

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at February 27, 2004 11:18 AMHaving been lucky enough to visit Sydney, those are some strange places to be surfing. Basically, it'd be like surfing in the San Francisco bay. Must be some wild weather.
I always wondered if ear plugs would help prevent broken eardrums... probably not at Mavericks judging from Alex's broken ribs and other injuries.

Posted by: e at February 27, 2004 12:05 PMAh, the ellusive state of rip-ness. Trey I recognize, who's that launching?
The field of Evolutionary Psychology is opening incredible insights into "love" and social/gender/kin relationships. Some folks find this approach too clinical, but my hunch is that they aren't really following the ideas. I think ev psych offers some really beautiful and graceful (and useful) points of view on age-old questions.
As a prof once remarked in class, "I don't really have need for pot, I'm just looking around myself and tripping out on what I see all the time!"
Posted by: ben at February 27, 2004 12:05 PMby the way, nice pic of Trey. He's the man....
Posted by: jw at February 27, 2004 12:06 PMUpdate from the cliff, courtesy of Christian (and what I could make out from the cell call).
Heat 1 - Carlos did well
Heat 2 - Rhodes and especially Skindog
Heat 3 - Shane Desmond, maybe Ryan Augustine
Heat 4 - Grant did best, then Ion Banner, and
maybe Tashnick, or McNamara
Ryan Seelbach didn't do well.
All these results are interpreted by Christian, and wholely unofficial. Semis are starting, and Christian is going to work, so we need a peep there for updates!
Christian also said it was all about the pit, and there were mostly 12 footers.

hi everyone,
i am swampped and won't be able to give a full report. i am just about to go to florida for work.
so, evan slater took off on a bomb but he went left. i don't know if the judges can see. same with eraldo. he got a bomb but went left and don't have a back up wave. the wipe out of the day was his as well. flea and matt ambrose i think did ok too. rodrigo resende got a long little one but i don't know the judging criteria on distance versus size. shane desmond i s competing machine and since the waves are inconsistent, he might have a good shot to win this. so does carlos and grant washburn. shawn rhodes got the best barrel so far. no official results were being released.
i have to go now.
have a niceness day!
Posted by: chrisitan at February 27, 2004 01:49 PMThought I'd take the opportunity to enjoy an empty Lane as the hotshots would all be in HMB. On the ride down the swell was not nearly as impressive as I expected. Between the wind, swell lumpiness and lack of size it certainly didn't look like a day to call the contest. The Lane was empty except for two yakkers on the outside Middle and a couple of surfers at indicator. The jump at the point was a little hairy as the tide was really low and the sets would hit hard and wash over the top leaving a swirling mess at the jump point. Got in fine after a little whirlpool roundabout near the cliff. Only caught one bomb at 2nd reef during the first hour so I paddled in to indicator where there were fun, OH wavew with long walls. A little bumpy and mushy but really fun. On the ride back up the wind had picked up and the water around Pillar Point looked to be whitecapping. Maybe Jeff Clark is behing and his house payment but this really didn't seem like it qualified as the right day.
Posted by: kdalle at February 27, 2004 02:22 PMA buddy of mine just sent this about the contest (which he just got back from)...
Got down there early because I knew the swell was dropping pretty quickly. Clark has often said to run the contest he wants the buoys at 15ft at 17sec. for the entire contest day. Unfortunately by 8am the swell had already dropped to 14ft at 14 sec and was continuing to drop.
Early on the conditions were pretty rough and disorganized. The set swells had very long intervals, sometimes up to 30 minutes between rideable swells. There was a good set at 8:30 and then not another good set until 9:00. That is a long time to stand around and watch a whole not of nothing. Also it doesn't give the surfers in a 45 minute heat much of a chance to score a decent wave. The next decent rideable
swell showed around 9:20.
As the guy on mavsurfer said the general conditions were, less than perfect conditions - choppy with the tide coming in and wave height 10 to 15'.
Clark has said in the past that he wants the surf to be 18'-20' for the contest.
I was there from 7:30am to 11:00am and only saw 2 really good sets come through.
It was a sunny day after early rain and there was a big crowd on the beach watching the event. Unfortunately the conditions just were not cooperating.
It will be interesting to see how the videos of the contest look.
That's it for the update
