a bit frumpy... but doable.
Gentle offshores.
head-high warbly A-frames.
SF buoy down to 6ft 13seconds.
Still some power out there.
Watched a few crystalline, paper-thin lips jettison out to form transluscent, inviting caverns.
Smaller, wind-swelly feel.
Frustrating south-bound current.
Potential increased cleanliness as morning-sickness fades?
Yesterday ushered in some fantastic waves up and down the beach. Lerm and i missed out on probable VFWs perfection as we cruised into the lot around 9:30 and the N wind was beginning to reak havoc. Saw Elias and his self-shaped board. He told us ye ol', "Ya just missed it!" Shiit.. soo thinking maybe santa cruz we began driving south but only got as far as Second Lot Sloat... which didn't look spectacular from the lot but in reality was firing on all cylinders. Saw Bug out there and proceeded to lock into wave after wave. Long, tapering, overhead walls for everybody! Heaps of waves pouring in. Agonizing, brutal paddles back out. Loads of fun.
weekend highlights:
- picked up a hitch-hiker after surfing on saturday morning. She ended up being this super-chill lady who actually plays softball with John from 2-mile surfshop in Bolinas. which was weird because i just received a chill email from John.
- jammed with my friend Vijay who plays a two-sided Indian drum. raga.
- sunny, beach-like chill session at Dolores park on saturday arvo.. So many beautiful people.
- brain melding groove syncopation at band practice last night.. letting it all hang out. felt good to attempt to rock the proverbial house down at Secret Studios in the deep mission.
- received an interesting email from "TGN" who says,
"I linked to you from blakestah....am glad you are getting waves...
Born and raised here, I started surfing at Kellys in 82...when there were more kneeboarders than anything, I once got punched and dunked at Deadmans at age 14..pretty fucking brutal....
Have you ever heard of Piranha or Jabba???
I work alot now...and to tell you the truth I have gotten used to missing good days of surf...family and career first...does anybody work anymore???
Having surfed for close on 25 years, (35 yrs old), I envy the enthusiasm that you neophytes have for the game...when you look down the beach, the guy hitting the lip is me...
I have surfed on a college surf team, and like the ads say " only a surfer knows the feeling"
So continue bogging you TRANSPLANT..and when I do make it out there...share a wave w/ one of the real locals..."
soo.. thanks for that email TGN... i think?
Bruce snapped some nice new photos.. some of OB, some of SC..
pics from hollowpits.com
send some cheer to "pez".
he joined the injured reserve list this weekend after doing battle with Sloat Sat. and will be out of the water for a week to 10 days.
Posted by: tom at March 15, 2004 10:31 AMsloat wuz so fun yesterday! crowded, but plenty o waves to go around. i had a bit of a frustrating sesh this morning. serious wave repellent... and that current! ah! i ended up getting out and running down the beach.

Posted by: luke at March 15, 2004 10:55 AMmid-saturday the inside reforms at VFWs were epic for bodyboarding, fast and hollow and pretty much nobody out. sunday evening was fun again at VFers even though it looked shitty from the beach, sick rights coming through with some long barrels. awesome weekend to live in SF!
Posted by: bbr at March 15, 2004 10:55 AMDay off for me. Too many days in a row and the shoulder and back are in the shop for maintenance. Highlight was yesterday afternoon, no paddle takeoff on the biggest set wave I saw all day. It doubled up and held me at the top so I just did a swan dive off the front of my board, freefalling maybe 12" or so to the bottom. Popped out the back to a few hoots. Kinda fun and no harm. I must have looked like the fourth photo down at the top of this page.
Bruce-ya finally got a shot of me. I'm the guy on the longer board:

Posted by: at March 15, 2004 11:06 AMletter from Mark Massara
Dear Coastal Activist:
On Tuesday the Federal Government walked away from an opportunity to
protect the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline left in Southern
California. After spending $150,000 on a three year study that proved the
76 mile Gaviota Coast is a national treasure, the Bush administration has
decided against designating the area a National Seashore.
The Gaviota Coast, which makes up 50% of all Southern California’s
remaining rural coastline, is home to 84 rare and endangered species. Its
breathtaking vistas are also home to 10,000 year old archeological sites
and views so spectacular that even the Bush administration’s National Park
Service recognized the significance of this amazing open space.
Unfortunately, as the Gaviota Coast faces real threats from urban and
industrial development, luxury mansion subdivision proposals at the nearby
Naples and Tajiguas Ranch, and pollution from agriculture and oil
development, the Bush administration has decided to do nothing to protect
it.
In January my email alert to Great Coastal Places Campaign members drew
overwhelming response. I received around 300 letters, the most you had
ever sent me at the time, and I had them delivered to the Department of
the Interior and the National Park Service. From throughout our state,
coastal advocates sent a clear message, “The coast must be protected for
future generations!” But the Bush administration answered back with yet
another refusal to stand up and protect our environment. Regardless of
public comment and regardless of value, the Bush administration continued
its pattern of missed opportunities and failure to protect our legacy for
future generations.
As far as Gaviota is concerned, this could mean increased water pollution,
massive luxury development and the loss of Southern California’s last
great coastal open space.
That said, I assure you we will not give up on Gaviota. We have too
little undeveloped coast to simply turn our backs on this beautiful spot.
This campaign can do remarkable things. We have worked together and found
ways to protect much of our threatened coast. Together, we will continue
to look for opportunities to protect Gaviota and the rest of our
spectacular coastline.
Together we can protect our coast for our children and our children’s
children.
Thank you
Mark

OB: *cough longlunch cough* Glassy sunny gorgeous. A day where it is certainly bigger than it looks from the street but suprisingly shrunken and still shrinking since this am - thumping inside closeouts still apparant but mellowing and seeing overall head high and perhaps some increasingly rare plus on the outter bars ...the ones that don't mush out, that is. Wave Repellent™ is definitely on - a scant few peeps scatter shot waaay out about and long waits, not seeing many rides, peaks are inconsistently timed and placed. Sensing a beautiful tease out there. If you enjoy the chase game take full advantage, lovely end-of-March goodness today. Cheers,
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at March 15, 2004 11:28 AMkdalle,
What board are you on it that shot? Looks like an interesting shape (but, it could be the angle)
Posted by: d looose at March 15, 2004 11:29 AMGot a sunday morning session this weekend, was just plain fun out there. Saw a couple guys getting pitted. Seems on the weekends about 50% of people out at VFW's are unable to catch a wave and of the 50% who do catch a wave, 50% of those actually make the drop (on the outgoing tide sand-suckers that is). I ate it on a couple and then got focused and charged some really fast corners out there. I wish SF weather was like this all the time!
Posted by: barney at March 15, 2004 11:31 AMe-Thanks for posting the Massara letter.
Bush has got to go. He is systematically dismantling many of the ervironmental protections achieved duing the last 30 years. Many of these are as a result of Ralph Nader's efforts. It will surely be ironic if his presence in the race is again attributed to a Bush victory.
Tom Carroll? If only I surfed like him. Surfed with him at epic Gutters on the North Shore once. Just amazing full speed power ripping.
Posted by: kdalle at March 15, 2004 11:36 AMSaturday morning at Sloat, what a joy. Wrestler, you may need to ID yourself. I came in a little after 9 and let the parking lot know the outer bars were hitting nicely. I wouldn't call it DOH, but it sure was overhead plus with some shape. And the best part was the fog kept the onlookers at bay (that and the paddle out - many denied - many too 30 min plus, I snuck out in 12 minutes ;) )
Also, the UFO longboard SHOULD be done this week - it is already at the glasser.
That kdalle board looks like the 8 footer funboard.
Posted by: blakestah at March 15, 2004 11:38 AMNot to hog the board but i just saw d looose's psot. It's my Stewart 9'-8", 20 lb. crowd pleaser. It's shape is similar to a 60's Rhinochaser with the Stewart chined front rails. Not much rocker and the sucker really works well in big waves. Creased it a while back so I'm just waiting for it to break. I want to get a replacement but it's so old that it predates Stewart's data archive. It's a 25000 series and at this point they are over 80000!
Posted by: kdalle at March 15, 2004 11:41 AMthat sucks about gaviota. can't imagine how bad things will get in CA if we have to survive another 4 years of bush&dick.
had some time on sat and got to sloat after the fog had filled-in, so i drove to north county sc, had fun on my first outing to one of the better-known spots down there, with just a few others out. warbly on the rising tide, and sectioning a lot, but fun, and less punishment than ob for the size. didn't feel quite right on many of my takeoffs, probably wasn't deep enough?
i think i got to the beach about an hour late on sun am, the wind had started to switch, it was still completely doable, but more often lurching than peeling, and often stacked-up, with rips and currents flowing strong. sounds like sloat may have been a better call than further north.
found a pair of paddle gloves, email me at pnmcs@comcast.net if you lost a pair on sun, and let me know where you left 'em, along with brand and distinguishing marks.

Posted by: at March 15, 2004 03:11 PMHola Niceness -
Just sayin' what's up from my new, blessedly cool air conditioned office down here in PuraVidaville. Glad to hear about some fun times in SF today and this weekend... way to go all you big time Saturday chargers, and Sunday sounded like there was plenty of niceness going around. I've been in my new setup down here for about a week... todo tranquilo. I could not have an easier job - playing on the Internet all day - to live down here. It will be plenty easy for me to keep up with all the action in NorCal from you guys now. I've got a random extra bunk bed in my room if anyone wants to visit. Sounds like your weather is getting nicer... still cold from what I hear on the East Coast... the Endless Summer is raging down here, sweat your ass off all day and Night too. I won't say anything about the water temperature. ;)
I will say that I am 3 days into my new surfy lifestyle with daily DPs and morning surfs before work... I'm still a 3rd year 'neophyte' who LOVES every second in the ocean... every night I go to bed like it's Christmas Eve, knowing there'll be surf in the morning... Morning glass and offshores... Mmmm, yummy peaks... Last few days have been more playful than hollow and hardcore... connected on some feel good backhand snaps... go surfing!!
e, I'm gonna mail you some pics... Keep charging everyone. I have a nice Sunset view from my desk here... Sun is just about to drop from some clouds into the golden hour before dipping glowingly into the water. ¡Que bella! Ciao.
Posted by: jake at March 15, 2004 03:12 PMBlakestah, a question. Sat am I had a tight window of opportunity to surf and was bummed to see nothing from anywhere upon my arrival at the beach. Driving down the beach I noticed that the fog was clearing first at the park terminus (a condition that I have noticed before). My guess is that this is the case because of the temp differential between park land & pavement. Seem right?
All else: go to Puerto Rico, but not all at once. Our two weeks' trip there was great. Fine reef break surf that hovered in the waist to head & half range for our trip. Didn't get Tres Plamas big, but oh well. Met some great people, fine fishing, good diving. Such a different world from the one we have here- it cemented our decision to move back to Hawaii. Nothing better than an early am surf, a little spearing for dinner and early to bed to start it all over. If you are planning a trip to PR email me & I'll dish.
Sorry to hear about the injury Pez. Heal fast. I'll be back to a regular surf sched. by the time you are better, gimme call?
Sunday was plenty fun too, but man I wish those walls lasted. So many waves were droppped and shouldered just too damn fast. Maybe OB is game for one of those new fangled artificial reefs?

Posted by: goodmorning at March 15, 2004 03:23 PMDown South Jakester, good to hear you are alive and well! If you see Weisbecker down there, tell him... well, never mind.
Just got out about an hour ago. Shall we say: REALLY GOOD! Think it was better with the tide still dropping as once the tide came in, it started wiggin out a bit. Still fun. Saw a posse of familar faces out there: Aleck from Aqua, the other tall dude from Aqua, The Werewolf, Mean looking artist from Pathetica & friend, etc. Great vibes all around. Not too much trash on the beach (thanks Hayward, San Leandro, Fremont, etc.).
Got myself 4 sessions in over the weekend. Crowds were decent and vibe was solid. That fog on Sat. was really strange. Sunday, sounds like I missed some solid morning action at OB. Glad to hear some peeps scored. This weather is starting to get ridiculous. When was the last time it was like 70+ for like 10 days of March?

Posted by: e at March 15, 2004 03:46 PMas for the weather- can you say global warning!!!
or as Bush would say - global warming, thats just fuzzy math the scientist are dpoing.
Posted by: at March 15, 2004 03:47 PMI'll be derned if I can figure out the fog here. Saturday it was WAY cool. The outer bars were throwing down in the fog, and tons of able bodies were just driving away. I paddled out to 3 other peeps, and left 4 there when I went in, and waves were fairly easy and sizeable.
As for March weather and surf...I've only been here since 96, but and March is only half over, but I think it already is the best since 96. No winds, and surfable almost every day (and sunny and warm).

yo e, I don't know if I'd say this scene is bursting with Betty's... I think there's a definite shortage of cute Ticas in this town compared to some other places I've been (Ooooh, this one bartender in Puerto Viejo... rediculous)... But there's plenty of people coming and going in this town, and I can't complain when chicas do come in off the beach to use the Internet still wearing their bikinis. We also just had a group of 8 Blonde UofFlorida Spring breakers down here... that was a'ight! For me, maybe I've got my eye on a Japanese-Italian girl works at the bar downstairs. ;)

Posted by: ck at March 15, 2004 04:29 PMOB: is this southern california? Freakishly warm and sunny. Either no breeze or slight onshore [ hard to tell where I am ] surf has shrunk and gotten chunkier lumpier. Still ridiculously gorgeous. Peeps just bobbin' around... enjoy...
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at March 15, 2004 04:43 PMIt's a bunk bed, CK... two beds! But since I haven't met you in person yet, I can't say who should get the top bunk... it would be a little precarious with big Bro Kaiser up there though. A hammock might be the call...

You gotta hose when nature calls. They got scorpions and shit down there, screw walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Besides, I will sleep on the beach. Jake, consider hitting Mar Y Sombra on Fri/Sat night up in Manual Antonio. From my travels, there were always some euro/american/etc. travellers around as there is a Spanish/English school on the way in over the hill from Quepos. You can score some waves there too. Nothing epic but nice cove w/ a left at the south end.
