E's Surf Report: cooler at the beach.. onshores.

Yup folks.. onshores! The north end of the beach was surfable but the winds were kicking up and the surface looked hacked and grumpy. A handful of die-hards made a go of it and i actually saw 2 or 3 down-the-line rides in front of the beach chalet. But.. the magical fairytale conditions seem to be winding down. After a slightly disappointing fall/winter season the surf gods blessed us with two weeks of glorious weather and an extendo string of inviting, lip-smacking surf. While sucking down beers tonight at the noc-noc or Kilowatt or wherever remember to tip one back for Poseidon, god of the sea, protector of all waters... and also a god of fertility! hmmm..

I think i speak for everyone when I express deep condolences to Ian and his family. It seems that Ian's good-vibed cousin was killed yesterday when a driver of a Jeep hit him at full speed and then accelerated off and left the scene. A hit-and-run. Turns out the driver of the jeep later took his car into a body shop, telling the mechanic he had hit a deer, but the mechanic recognized the jeep from a recent news story and called the cops. The driver has now been apprehended and is in jail. Damn Ian.. I'm really sorry to hear that. Someone yesterday mentioned that Ian puts out tons of positive energy and that this energy could be a real asset to his family right now. I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. We've followed Ian through some ups and downs, moving to san diego and back, working like a slave to keep his shit going.. and he's always maintained a positive stoke about life and surfing... that stoke is infectious and a positive light in the world. Other people instinctively feel that light and are drawn to and comforted by it. It helps to nourish and foster their own light. Basically, good energy begets good energy and to be a natural source of good energy is one of the highest forms of human existence. keep it up Ian. I think that your cousin is experiencing something like this right about now..

Looks like StormSurf revised their forecast for today:

Weak windswell continuing at 3.6 ft @ 11 secs.
Expect a new utility class swell to arrive starting at 3 PM with period at 15 secs and size coming up relatively fast. Swell to peak by 5 PM with swell potentially up to 8 ft @ 14 secs (9-10 ft faces - though this is probably on the high side given the extreme northerly angle).

So once again, Dr. Blakestah gets it right (first)!

thanks christian but i have a bunch of other ripping sticks that i will utilize in the meantime since i fully plan on my wheels being returned. (92% of all stolen vehicles are recovered in SF)

But, after reading Ian's story about his cousin it really put's this incident in to perspective.

I teach kids how to help change the world. I also try to help them understand what good karma is and how you need to give a little... when I hear about senseless acts of meanness it rips at me and I wonder how people can just drive away without any feeling of remorse or compassion for human life or belonging(s). I read your site daily at work because it brings good vibes - it makes me smile - it seems like there is always something positive that I read. I don't know you Ian but through this site I have read your comments about surfing - I send my condolences as well in a big way. One place in the world is the ocean where we can find peace and serenity. Hopefully one day everyone can just be a little more compassionate for human life. Just to care -

OB: Spring has sprung but hey it ain't so bad. Conditions improved a bit since the slop this morning, water surface textured but not chunky, onshores not so bad, the fog and sun are duking it out 50/50. Averaging waist to shoulder high, lunchtime crew of peeps finding some crumbly rides, even a few down-the liners. Peaks are quite sparse but good enough for optimists. Yes, fun potential. Looks okay if winds hold.

Thank you everyone. Every person I talk to, every post I read makes it seem a little easier. E, thanks jerk, for bringing tears back to my eyes ;) in all sincerity though, every one of the niceness crew, though I've only met a few of you, are the coolest people around. I'm lucky to be part of a small group of people that recycles so much positivity. It's sad to know someone could be so heartless and filled with hate but on the positive flip side it's so heart-warming to know there are positive people, like the witness who stopped to help my cousin after being tossed 150 ft (not the ones who didn't stop), the body shop owner who wasn't afraid to step forward and decline the reward, everyone here who is there each other no matter what.

Love. Life. Laughter.

Hold on to it while you got it, cuz tomorrow it might be gone. St. Patrick's day has a new meaning to me.

On the flip, Tom, if you don't recover your 'ish, I'll be the first to toss $20 down on your new board (sorry so little, I'm broke :) I'm going to the fish demo, with some bar-b-q, a single fin 6'8 yater from the 70's :)

OB 2nd look : okay it's a tad more powerful than yesterday - addition of sporadic head highs in select spots, also small but decidedly thumping closeouts that particularly like to appear right in front of the occasional paddler.

Just went to the bank to fill out the report for the credit card fraud (perp got $800 in charges from 6 stores) and I got a flat on my bike!

Buoys picking up so I am going to walk down to my local with a 7'7" Funboard for low tide.

Ian and others thanks for the offer but I've got 6 more boards so I could not accept. It's pretty amazing though that you would be thinking of others during such a tough time for yourself. Hopefully, you feel up to stopping in on Sat night.

And yes. It was a hide a key but the key does not start the car. And I always look around to see before I sneak the hide a key in to it's spot. So be careful all. (But I doubt the dawn patrol is as chancy as the 2:00 PM sunny day sessions.)

looking forward to the fish fest tomorrow. showing off my spanking new fish and meeting a few of the excellent people who break up the monotony of my days with kindness and ocean knowledge. (i'm a short girl with a yellow 5'6" manny fish.) looks like the lindy surf could be kinda fun.
random other note: anyone want to dish about the likelihood of catching drakes estero good on a random day in june? i'm going camping up there and wondering if it's worth it to bring my board. also, the likelihood of being eaten. (figured i could reference it by name since it's listed on surfline and wannasurf.com. apologies if that pisses anyone off.)

2) The UFOs I'll bring are 6'3"x18.5", 6'8"x18.5", and maybe my partner's 7 footer 20.5 inch extra wider. My boards tend to be too small for anyone except a true shortboarder, in which case they are too big.

I just want to add my condolences as well. I know from our one meeting that you are a graceful soul who can easily aid his family through such a horrible time. The time we have in the water is precious. Every moment we have with friends is precious. I know I am lucky to be here surfing I am even more fortunate to share the water with someone with as much positive soul as yours.

We got to start regulating the beach better. Your theft is horrible and really pisses me off. The worst part of it is that the OB TROLLS who are honest will be the target of both the authorities and surfers. We should try and set some kind of sting up or something. This sucks!

unfortunately i didn't make it to lindy this AM. must have been an imposter. i am intersted in checking the ufo out. i rode cheyne horan/geoff mccoy style lazor zaps for a stint in the 80's. functional in the right surf. the kelp at the lane was a problem with the wing keels though. full disclaimer: i am a founder of maui fin co. i was a finhead.

Close...Saturday post. hundred guys at the north parking lot (seemed like) so mid beach seemed an easy call. Wind was there, but not too bad. Then it got worse, the fog moved in, and that dang south current made it really tough to stay in position. Hypothetical position - not being able to see the beach. Caught a few inside waves, but it could have been better. Outside waves continuously cracking, similar to the jet that sounded like it was landing in the potato patch. Sinus rinse day fo sho - she's a fickle love, no doubt. Auspiciously found a parking space and no line, plowed through $40 worth at Ton Kiang. Dang that food is good, but expensive. Where do the rezzt eat? Witnessed random act of kindness - tall goddess-like blonde breaking from the sidewalk to help an old chinese guy, who appeared to be on his last legs, cross the street. Vaya con dios sister.
