nice and smooth
Walked down to the local spot this morning expecting the typical empty mellowness but instead saw a squadron of SF's finest chargers/rippers/shralpers tearing shit up on the playful, glassy head-high waves. I then noticed mexisurf on the beach with his telephoto, snapping action shots. Turned out he called a bunch of the local heavies and got them together for a shralp-off in front of the lens. We watched SanFranPyscho Jesse land an effortless 360 aireal. pretty cool. Alex Martins was also out there carving massive divots. I didn't end up surfing because i wanted to spend some QT with my sis before she returned to the east coast. She was here for the weekend and we got our chill on.
It was super nice out at the beach this morning. I'm sure that many of you tasted the sweet nectar of the offshore-licked user-friendly windswell. Any barrels or stellar rides?
I guess that another whale washed up on the beach - this one near VFWs. crazy. watch out for the tooth.
Yesterday my sis, Lerm and i roadtripped south in search of waves and california coastal beauty. We wound up at Ano Nuevo and scampered down the nature-filled, sage-infused, olfactory pleasure-dome trail to the magical corner beach 'neath the bird-nesting cliffs. It was packed in the lineup but vintage, text-book Ano was happening so we were out there. Powerful, head-high+ super-wedges stacked up and cruised in. Lerm and i were doing more the spectator thing on the shoulder as a bunch of serious surfers were jockeying for position, taking off deep and either getting deeply pitted or taking out frustrations on the lip, or both. I noticed a couple faces as second-tier Santa Cruz pros. It was exciting to be part of the lineup while such high-performance, magazine-quality waves and maneuvers were going down. We each slipped in to a handful of scrappy waves and leftovers. I also managed one semi-legit nugget and kind-of air-dropped the takeoff and then sped down the conical, uber-glassy crystalline wall for a few clips before turning shoreward and avoiding the closeout mass. What a wonderful wave. Too bad it's localised by not just the frothing mass of santa cruz rippers but also the landlord.. as evidenced by the TWO dead seals with huge bite marks right on the beach in front of the break.. no shit..
soo.. cool.. hopefully y'all got waves. I just received an email from Jake where he's amping on his Costa Rican lifestyle.. Ruuuaatch!! naw.. we can all live vicariously through him a bit.. i guess..
soo.. the papa buoy popped up again to 21ft 13seconds!! fuuuck.. i was getting psyched on a few days of small windswell.. but.. looks like the NorPac isn't finished yet.. We'll see what blakestah has to say when he posts his monday report.

Surfed Pacheco this morning. Man, the sandbars there are all screwy. Just lumpy closeouts and double waves from the inside-outside problem. It sucks there, everyone shoulda been someplace else.
On the plus side, superman showed up and tried to break his board a few more times, that was cool. And two of OB's uber rippers were there as well. I guess I can thank Paul for taking the rest to VFers. But there were just too many formless closeouts. Surf is just crappy at Pacheco, and the locals are grumpy.

Took wife and toddler to Steamer Lane Saturday. I was gonna surf but it was way crowded so I just watched for a while. Highlight was my daughter seeing surfing up close for the first time. She giggled uncontrollably everytime someone caught a wave. It was infectious and brought a smile to all around us. That was a bigger high for me than catching the set of the day.
Sunday. Saw all the shorboarders down at VFW Sunday morning. Perhaps that was mexisurf documenting. Saw one of the longest barrels I've ever seen in the shoredump by a guy on an orange board. Going right...all I could see was the tip of his board for at least 5 seconds and he popped out just as it clamshelled. NICE! Went up to my "secret spot" for a couple hours of well overhead peelers and just glass, glass, glass. Super painful calf cramp ended it. I'm still limping today but went out anyhow.
blakestah-gotta say that the outside at Sloat this a.m. was muy fun. If you had a longer board I'd say that woulda been the ticket. Mid-beach has been strange all year IMHO.
When am I gonna run into any of the niceness crew?

I snagged it from the rip, swung it on and proceeded to project myself from the throwing lips around Blakestah's hood! Not to brag, but I can really fly over the falls with the best of them. Over the last 2 weeks, my board has taken so much punishment. It is as though I am trying to break it but I can't. Anyway... A few rides for me but more watching then anything as there were some solid shackage going on around me.
As for the weekend, sounds like SC County was on many agendas. I surfed First Peak out at Pleasure Point for the first time ever yesterday. Pretty fun actually with some decent size sets coming through every 10 minutes or so. The locals there know that wave inside and out. Tough to get some without pissing too many people off in the process.
E, great BBQ. KDalle, was that you all alone in front of the bathrooms this morning?

this morning it was fun for a bit untill the fog rolled in. within 10 minutes, it went from sunny and fun to foggy and crap. classic OB.
yesterday was fun, i'm still sore from all the beatings i took! seriously go my shit handed to me on a platter. i duck dove this wave that just detonated in front of me, and for the first time my hood got ripped OFF. Little overhead wave just took me to lunch and kept my hood(though i found it on the beach later!) Love it. once again... classic OB.

i surfed swift st. saturday morning. got there around 7:30am looked like shoulder high fun. 2 guys out....surfed for around 1 hour until they left, inconsistent but clean, then i soloed for around 20 min, until a pack of 4 paddled out. surfed for another 30 min with 5 of us, then on my last wave i saw a group of 6 junior high kids jumping in....thought wow, thats really crowded for 1 wave sets every 15 min.
sunday i surfed outside VFWs for around 2 waves that were overhead bump masters, everydrop was like snowboarding 3 day old powder at squaw, bump bump bump bump bump bump....you get the point. so i bagged that bad idea and surf the inside...damn, really fun and heavy scored several barrels. got some serious drops into super heaving shollow waves. overall really fun.

Kinda glassy, breaking chunky .. odd combo, but rideable and rippable. Waist -head, I'd guess. Plenty of unemployed peeps out there. A large congregation competing in one spot. Seeing other picky peaks, most of them claimed. Conditions changing super fast due to moody fog! Who knows what it will be in 20 minutes?

I bought one from a health food store and I use it after every surf sess.It's basically a ceramic pot that you fill with warm water and salt. You just pour through one nostril until it comes out the other side then you switch sides.Works great. Type in Neti pot on google to check it out. Peace

No surf for me this weekend...still servicing the surf-trip debt that I accumulated by leaving my pregnant wife for 9 days! And given that baby # 2 is coming at the end of Apr...my sessions may be few and far between indeed. I will surf vicariously through the niceness crew. Keep the pics coming!

yesterday, i made the trip down to SC to get in the water for the first time since i farked my back on the 20th. caught some TINY warm-up peelers at the Hook and then moved up to the point. a bit crowded, but adequate sets to give rides to all. scored a few fun ones, but by then the back was cramping and it was back to the beach for me (where i bumped into Superman himself before he headed out). iced it last night, but today it's stiff and sore. shit. injury recovery sux. takes too long...and my patience is too short. bbr...i hope yours is coming along better.

Had an excellent trip. Flew Hawaiian home with my new CI single fin I picked up and they charged me $80 to ship a 6'10". When I had an airpass with ATA I would pay $50 to ship two 9'6" longboards in a 10" bag loaded to the gills. I also saw Hawaiian (Delta employees) charge another guy $80 per board to get to Oahu. Don't fly Hawaiian. They are the worst and most expensive way to ship boards. Of course golf bags which weigh twice as much go free. Argghh and I got three dings in my board from them. Next time back to ATA.. at least the movies are free.

The only problem was all the reporters and groupies asking for my autograph when I got out. And those business reps from Metamucil and Viagra are still pestering me to become their sponsored surfer.

Mexisurf was shooting pretty close to directly in front of the Beach Chalet. The sandbars there are all-time right now, everyone should go there. And the sandbars at Pacheco suck, no one should waste their time there. Staircase 18 - good. Pacheco - really bad. Repeat to yourself.
Surfpulse upgraded equipment. I checked the java stream next to the mpeg4 stream, indistinguishable in terms of quality. But both are a LOT higher quality than the previous cam. Also, the Java stream is about 3-4 seconds behind the MPEG4 stream.

Posted by: tom at March 29, 2004 12:56 PMi finally tested the groin pull on sunday after 3 weeks watching and waiting. was thinking a nice drive down the coast to a mellow spot to test the pain threshold would be good, but stopped at south sloat lot and got amped. outside was firing - head+ and belching lips. surfed an hour and caught 8 waves with only mild groin pain. actually perfect conditions as i either screamed down the line or had big, open faced carves. also spun out the tail of my board on two waves, but i blame that on my injury ;)
on the down low - saturday night was much fun.

It is more than just a surf related injury/affliction. Since I want it licked, I am passing unless it is truely firing. Add that to my limited window due to family obligations and I am not surfing much at all the past two weeks.
Wife and Kid are heading to the ma-in-law's in a couple days so it will probably suck at OB from Thursday to Sunday. Maybe my head will feel better though.

I got a few that held up for a couple a turns, but then sucked out HARD in the shallows (put a few more stress-cracks in that 9'4" blakestah). My freind told me he was checking the surf when a man and his son approached him in there wetty's and asked if he had a cell phone cos his brand new Element had been stolen. The owner had hid the key. As the story goes the owner had gotten out of the water becuase he " i couldn't see my car anymore". Maybe it's a band of surfer thieves just trying to make enough money to buy a lot at the Ranch. I smell a movie script.....E start writing.....

Posted by: e at March 29, 2004 03:36 PMtook a sick day and surfed midbeach 10-12:30 today. it was better earlier, and quite good for a stretch - nuggety and glassy. did draw a crowd - me and 2 others at first, wound up 12 or more. highlight was two near-barrels midway thru. too bad that fog rolled in, looked like the barrels were more-open earlier from what i could see on the cams. dawn patrollers probably got it best today.

Friend#1, I "cured" my sinus problem by just sticking my nose underwater in the lineup and inhaling until I had a snortful in my sinuses, tipping back and holding it there for a while, then letting it flow back out. Did it like four times, a couple straight go-outs. Felt a bit weird sitting in the lineup with water sloshing around in my head (and always thought I'd be drowning if I was inhaling water). But aside from a bit of pink mucus later on it sure cauterized the snotstrils and torched the sinus demon. Hell, it's all salt water isn't it?
