The winds be blowin'
Winds were blowing pretty hard last night out of the NNW, up to around 30 kts at the SF Bouy, making the surf complete junk this morning. I was planning to get up and drive around a bit, maybe down the coast into HMB or even Disneyland (otherwise known as SC County) but decided against it. Glad I did. Seeing the reports this morning, it doesn't look promising. At least the weather is clear and the sun is out though.
Hopefully things clean up a bit as we head into the weekend. All going to depend upon the winds.
Couple of random points of news, notes, etc.
- Train wreck in N. Korea kills over 3,000. Loaded with fuel, could be suspicious.
- The dirtiest thing in a hotel room: the remote control! Never cleaned.
- Its Earth Day
One last note, there is another surf film coming up at the Balboa on May 4th featuring Jack McCoy's new release, Blue Horizon. This event is being put on by Wise this time. I would say get out and support it but I am not sure if I would mean that. I pledge allegiance..... Either way, check out the film sometime as I heard it is really good.

yeah yeah, hotel remotes. i've said it before and i'll say it again:
Posted by: j at April 22, 2004 09:58 AMHEED MY WARNING ON THE LITTLE COFFEE STIRRING STRAW THINGS FELLAS!! there are some dirty ass people walking around this earth.
In restaurants, salt & pepper shakers and other table condiments, as well as menus are pretty bacteria-shellacked too. They get "washed" by people touching them and that's about it. mmm-mm. FINGER LICKIN' GOOD!
Posted by: Bad Breath Todd at April 22, 2004 10:13 AMI always heard the sperm-forter was the worst in the hotel rooms. Never would have thought the remote or the salt and pepper shakers.
I always like to justify these things by telling myself that the water I swallow at Lindy is far and away worse then anything I might get from touching a pay phone, remote, coffee stirrer, etc. IMMUNE SYSTEM: Solid!

Working in SoCal this week. Checked the San Clemente area breaks this morning and most looked pretty junky. Staring out the window at Huntington Pier now and it's looking good...
Nice work on the reports, Kaiser!
Posted by: mwsf at April 22, 2004 10:57 AMOops. Meant to say "What's WITH the coffee stirring straw things though?"
Posted by: mwsf at April 22, 2004 10:59 AMi got some point action last night until dark. last one out. tide was a bit too high but there were some fun ones here and there. most were mushy but my last wave wedged up out of nowhere and had a little lip to hit. pretty fun.
Posted by: bbr at April 22, 2004 11:08 AMThanks Matt! BBR, nice work getting some waves. Seems like they are few and far between some days.

Posted by: Kaiser at April 22, 2004 11:11 AMGotta say, I'm not sure that I could support the upcoming surf film sponsored by W*** Surfboards either; especially in view of the fact that, according to my sources, W*** employees are prohibited by their employer from attending Aqua sponsored events. I also heard a rumor that an applicant for a job at W*** Surfboards was refused further consideration when it was revealed that she had previously worked at SF Surfshop. Finally, my wife recently went into W*** Surfboards to purchase a birthday gift for me. She came home and told me that she now understood why I never go in there, "Those guys are ASSHOLES!" Apparently, she experienced the all too typical combination: the W*** Surfboards hustle/while being made to feel "less than" because she doesn't surf.
Posted by: Jimmie at April 22, 2004 11:26 AMHaving, said all that, I have to allow that Kevin from W*** Surfboards is a good guy. There used to be a couple of other guys working there that were all right - but I haven't been in there for a long, long time, so they could be gone by now. Sorry if my rant has offended anybody, it's just my humble opinion that "W*** SUCKS!"
What's wrong with germs?... They keep our immune system diverse, yo. Where is everyone's favorite (out of nor-cal/not secret spot) to surf. I don't want to start an argument with naming spots, etc. so keep it broad. i.e. Idaho, etc.
Posted by: Ian at April 22, 2004 11:38 AMCool out Jimmie. I have some beefs with every shop in town. That said, Bob, Dave, Rob, etc. are all decent guys. I've bought stuff from him since the late 70's and he's an honest guy. In fact, he's the only guy that ever let me return a wetsuit after I had worn it. Both SF and Aqua screwed me at least once but I still shop there too. Surfshops are notorious for less-than-businesslike environments. Wise actually runs his like a business and a lot of people resent it. I'm just pissed that he over-promoted San Francisco and now we have all these niceness kooks every where ya look : )
Posted by: kdalle at April 22, 2004 11:39 AMOh, and I meant more towards everyones favorite place to TRAVEL to surf...
Posted by: Ian at April 22, 2004 11:40 AMBefore any of this niceness there was the grouchy, gruff boi's of W***. SF's OG shop. They made their bed long ago and sleep in it today. Bottom line your supporting the movie and helping keep a tradition of the "surf movie" alive and that's a worthy cause. Hooting at home just isn't the same.
Posted by: altabatesgrom at April 22, 2004 11:45 AMwise may have been around for the longest but it has the least amount of soul, niceness and respect.
Posted by: nope at April 22, 2004 11:57 AMi will spend my precious little dough else where.
i too prefer to support Aqua, but i gotta give credit where credit is due: Dave totally sorted out my lady-charger a couple of years back with respect, patience, and good advice. i don't know the other dudes (again...i, personally, prefer Aqua), but Dave is kewl in my books.
christian...sounds like things for you are busy, but going great!! so excellent to hear.
Ian...as for your question...i'm just stoked to travel ANYWHERE for surf! though...i do have a preference for locs with warm-water and bikini-clad slurfer-honies! ; )

Posted by: at April 22, 2004 12:03 PMkdalle - Point taken, I should cool-out. Saying that "W*** SUCKS" is juvenile and probably way overstating my case. Apologies to anybody I offended.
Posted by: Jimmie at April 22, 2004 12:11 PMI have never gotten screwed by any local surfshop - including W***. So my decision on which shops I choose to do business with is based on my general impression and experience when I visit them. My beef with W*** is not that they are dishonest, or "less-than-business-like" - it's the vibe, the hustle. My experience and observation with the owner and SOME of his employees has been that they are often too busy trying to impress customers with their background and knowledge *while selling a particular product line*, to give genuinely helpful information. For what it's worth, this seems to have gotten worse in recent years since W*** moved to its present location.
Ian looks like the wise vs. sf vs. aqua thread is threatening to drown out your travel spots thread so I'll jump in - baja norte in the winter is my favorite trip
you can do it in a weekend or for weeks, as feral or as comfortable as you want, and there are sweet points, reefs and beachbreaks, the more well known and northerly breaks get crowded (but not steamer lane crowded), but as soon as you get south of ensenada the crowds basically disappear. And Ensenada means Anthony's "Disco" (I'll say it again) a great spot especially if you're old school and you just broke up with your girlfriend...
Posted by: eric at April 22, 2004 12:13 PMThats the type of debate we needed to get us going!
Since I started it, let me give you my take: My first board I ever board was from Wise. I bought it from a guy I THOUGHT worked there, his name, Bill Stewart. I bought a Stewart Funboard that day. As a kook, that was cool as shit! I bought my first wetty there too. SF Surf is cool. Never a bad vibe, never any bad deal. Never go there much. Aqua, really cool. They stock the best booties ever, Xcel Split Toes. I like their "retro-ness" and their solid stock of boards that no one used* to carry. Also, they started the surf film thing and I am totally down with that. Bringing the community together!!! Always a good thing.
Heading south, Sonlight or the Log Shop are the only surf shops I recognize. I will leave the rest unsaid.
All in all, I appriciate a good business and that is Wise. All the due respect. But, if my new board were sitting at Aqua and Wise, I would buy it from Aqua. And I think they have a nice retro single fin that fits PERFECTLY in my quiver.
Christian, we will talk soon! Of course I said that like a year ago I think...
Posted by: Kaiser at April 22, 2004 12:15 PMBob has been here since the 50's surfing, shaping, and then opening his surf shop. He deserves a little respect. Bob has always been profesional and respectful towards me, he makes sure that he does his job right so he's a bit of a perfectionist, and that may come off in a bad way. I support both Wise and Aqua, Alex is super cool and also very profesional.

Posted by: mexisurf at April 22, 2004 12:29 PMi too bought my first board from wise, from Dave who was very cool to me then (as a 14-year-old spending months of saved lawmowing cash). he also let me return a wetty i had worn (again, as a youngerster), and saved for me a used board that he noticed would be really good for me when it arrived in the shop. So...all that said, these days i go to aqua 'cause Alex is dope and i they are a sweet skate shop too. but wise was very good to me in my first years of surfing when i was too young to know anything about respect, business-maner, profesionalism or whatever. and their report is generally pretty reliable and i do call it a lot...

Posted by: Kaiser at April 22, 2004 12:38 PMMy take on the local shops.
Bob Wise has professional interactions with his customers, as do his employees. He's never done me wrong as a customer. I do know he refused to consider someone for employment who had worked at SF Surfshop because "she worked for the competition." But Bob has a kazillion boards and suits. I went in there once to get help with specs on a board (I got a sweet deal from a San Diego shaper), and Dave STILL helped me out, even though I got the board elsewhere. I've bought 3 or 4 boards there, and 2 or 3 wetsuits. Happy each time. But Bob does foster a bit of overt "it is us against the competition" towards the other shops in town, and that is just not, NICENESS. It certainly is not reciprocated. Bob probably represented 80-90% of all surfing related sales in town.
SF Surfshop is set up more as a retail outlet for custom shaping. It is much smaller than Wise, smaller than Aqua. But, I will never wear a hoodie or beanie from anywhere else, and they do my custom shaping. And, if I can find wetsuit stuff in stock there, I get it too.
Aqua is the new kid in town, carries Vernor and Merricks. Alex is a good guy, and working hard on it. He's got a great location, I'm sure he'll do well. He has a very positive focus, and is working hard on it.
I gotta wonder about WISE movie night. The Aqua thing was only half Alex, and the other half Bandini. And just about everyone in town has surfed with one or both of them. I certainly hope the point of WISE movie night is not stealing thunder from Aqua.
All three of the shops have been very friendly and helpful to my little fin system efforts. Rob connected me with Rusty, Alex with Merrick, and SF Surfshop helped in many many many ways.
If I was going someplace for surf, I'd go to Chile, buy all the land access to a cove with a left point break, and surf alone for the next 4 years, except when niceness visited. It would be cold, and big, but never crowded.
Posted by: blakestah at April 22, 2004 12:49 PMi wasnt stoked when wise moved over to our neighborhood but turns out to be pretty convenient. i just bought a pair of reef sandles from em last week, those are the best flip flops ever. they have been around the longest. one guy at wise with the brown hair, i think he wears glasses sometimes, ive had good conversations with. i do see more glossy eyed smiles at aqua which i like, and they had the only copy of litmus in town a while back. i was more into hanging out in surf shops when i was 15 though (whoa cool guy).
swimming pools fiji is my favorite place to surf so far in my life. also good (reletively speaking) ob. and good malibu, from where i have been transplanted.
ill be at that movie for sure, been looking forward to seeing it.

the best place i've been is chile... actually it's pretty much the only place i've been besides cabo (which is cool for partying but not that great for waves) and northern baja. chile has tons of waves, millions of spots to be discovered, extremely hot women, and pretty decent food. i surfed the heaviest waves of my life in northern chile, check here: http://www.805bbr.com/words/features/southamerica/
i'd also like to return to the biarritz/hossegor area. i went there on a trip through europe with my lady but only stayed for a few days and was completely skunked for surf. however, it was extremely beautiful and i've seen a ton of sick photos that make me wanna return. i think my next big trip will be france, spain, and portugal. i really wanna get good mundaka.

Posted by: kdalle at April 22, 2004 01:40 PMOn the Wise Tip. Been going there since before SF so I go there for my essentials (wax, earplugs, rashshirts, leashes). They have good deals on wetsuits at certain times of the year. I bought two winter suits for about $300-350 the last time.
When Bob moved from Vicente to VF's they started dealing in more volume to pay the higher rent. Bob is a definite business man. They use their volume to advantage at times. Log shop has had some boards bought out from under them by Wise. (LS wants a couple boards and Wise buys the whole shipment). But all in all, if you know who to talk to they are a definite resource. Great for the newbies as they have a huge selection of stuff. Great for established surfers as it is there if you know how to ask. Great for old timers because Dave and Bob remember all the folks who came in way back when.
But, don't go there for a cheap surf board. Don't go there if you want your custom made board to get there quick (only possible when you deal with the shaper more directly).

Posted by: Jimmie at April 22, 2004 01:57 PMNorthern Queensland: some GREAT surf, but it was pretty crowded - and I lost a watch dragging my arm in the face of a wave at Double Island Point. No more velcro watch straps!
Tonga: Good to great waves. Great people! Nothing to do but surf, sleep and eat - just the way I like it!
Northern Peru: Didn't catch the best swell ever, but there was ALWAYS something worth surfing. Chicama was only waist to chest high - but broke like it was coming out of a machine!
Bali: Can't wait to go back - would spend the rest of my life there. Even with all the tourists, it's pretty easy to get off by yourself if you want to.
Day trip: Somewhere west of The Great Highway!
I've only had good experience with W*** and I've been shopping there for about 12 years. They give good advice which I sometimes regretted not listening to. Bob and Dave have a lot of knowledge and tons of stories from back when...
I wouldn't dis any of the shops in town though-options are a good thing. Each has it's uniqueness and personality. I just got such good service from them when they had the little shop on Taraval that I tend to stick with them.
Posted by: Dennis at April 22, 2004 02:34 PMTime to take up kite surfing today. Anybody down with that? Actually, I've been thinking about it... maybe next year.
As far as shops go, I like to support the "little guy" (who has good service) when I can. Therefore, I like shopping at Schroedel Surfboards in Cruz. O'Neill has me while I live in SC for wetties, since if I have an issue with the wettie, I can walk it down to the shop to get it repaired.
Haven't been many places as far as long distance surf, but Mainland Mexico very nice as is the water. Oz was great to surf. I didn't have a board in New Zealand. I am going back to both of those places someday. I saw some insanely fun surf in NZ (and with no board, I was going nuts). Oz is like America with friendly people and cheap food and lodging. NZ is like America without people.

Posted by: at April 22, 2004 02:45 PMGood banter for sure. I gotta side with our local weather guru on the surf film questioning. I am glad we have a "large" shop like Wise with our other smaller volume, specialty shops. Creates good product/advice/service to us here consumers depending upon our needs.
But my take is on the movie night deal. I think these have added to the surf culture that we have here in the city where Bandini and Alex have rejuventated it. I am not sure I like other "shops" trying to "get theirs" now that they see them doing "good" with it. But whatever. Bottomline, the flick should be sick and I want to see it so I most likely will go. Wise sells a lot of surfboards/wetsuits/surf shiz and runs a good business. Aqua sells less surf shiz, runs a smaller business and has re-developed some cool things that I like about surfing.... films!

Speaking of kite surfing, maybe it's a good day for that. Flying around like that looks incredibly fun. First day in outer sunset, unpacking boxes, I looked up and saw this man literally flying in front of my window. It's a bird, it's a plane... Blinked, rubbed eyes, and saw the strings and kite. yeah, he's a funny guy, very philosophical. but i ain't gonna talk no s*** on the niceness board. on the surfshop debate, i shop at paradise whenever i can. chick-power! if only they had more actual surfing equipment, just like if only the women's surfing mags had more pictures of women actually surfing. wait a minute, didn't i just say i wasn't gonna talk s***.
Posted by: steamwand at April 22, 2004 04:29 PMA word to the wise for all of you- don't expose. Why are spots all over the world getting overcrowded? Why are gringos hated worldwide? Why is there localism? Because the methods of communication allow for coveted secrets to be exposed. Internet, cell phones, mags, films but most of all individuals whom exploit. Surfers are worse than chicks at keeping secrets. And gringos jump at exploiting third world countries so they can setup their surf camps and buy land so they can have their private islands, private waves and monkey butlers. Locals lose out, lose land and lose the opportunity to surf their own ocean. It makes me sick every time I see some kook roll up to OB in their SUV and call their porta crowd with their cell phone. There isn't enough regulation out there because it just gets worse everyday. It's even worse in other countries when gringos show up with their surf camps and american dollar and think they now have the right to pull their attitude and then expose and exploit. So next time you roll out a laundry list of your favorite spots- think about the consequences when you're getting vibed and your spot has now become the zoo you had dreaming of getting away from...
Posted by: at April 22, 2004 04:56 PMtwo words: buzz kill...or is that one word?
Posted by: jdz at April 22, 2004 05:01 PMyeah, wow, what a totally enlightened, brand new perspective! you're right: what we really need is more regulation, read violence, in the line-up! here's my view (also not really brand new, but bears restating):
Posted by: steamwand at April 22, 2004 05:15 PM1) if you surf a spot that isn't listed in a typical breakmap/surf guide, it's probably best to keep your mouth shut. if it's been published in books circulated worldwide, it's not really a secret anymore and it's probably okay to talk about it.
2) the balinese people, at least, do not seem to hate us (gringos) and since the bombing their economy has been hurting. they are dying for us to come back.
yeah, some surf spots are crowded and it sucks, but the answer is not localism (or sexism, yeah, i caught the derogatory comment about women) or any other -ism. the answer is respect.
I think we've killed this one, but wanted to add my 0.02 . . .
I bought my first board, suit, etc. from Wise back when Bob was on Vicente about 15 years ago and he's always treated me fairly. He just has a different personality than the other guys. He's as stoked on surfing as any of the others and will help anyone out. He's given me breaks on wetsuits even though he doesn't know me from Adam and I've been going to his shop for years. Just not his style.
Posted by: d looose at April 22, 2004 05:18 PMAnonymous - this sounds a lot like the Nike factory debate, exploiting 3rd world workers and such. To me, if it were so bad why do people line up for a chance to have a job? Are you arguing for isolationism for undeveloped countries so they can continue to have less access to quality medical care, etc.?

Posted by: steamwand at April 22, 2004 05:29 PMTo no-name. Crowds are here to stay. Get used to it. Life is too short to get aggrevated and throw up everytime somebody uses a cell phone at the beach. I don't care for crowds that much but it's usually one or two jackasses in the line up that snake everybody that pisses me off. Those folks have been around even before the big crowds. As for regulation, make joints, not war.
Posted by: Dennis at April 22, 2004 05:30 PMTo "no name poster", I used to be a kook (still am in my regard), I am a gringo, I drive a SUV, I surf OB and I have american dollars. You and I could be buddies I guess....
We, as surfers, carry a sense of responsiblity to represent what our country is really about when we travel to foreign lands. Whether 3rd world or not, surf camp layden or not. We are a minority amongst our own population. We tend to travel more internationlly, we tend to be more "open" with our views and we tend to smoke more weed (off the topic but true). We "American Surfers" are not the problem. We are not the majority of the surf camp operators. In fact, quite the contrary.
Blame CNN, your government and any other establishment you wish. Besides, if I am worse then a chick at least I only share my secrets with a sub section of our society whom I respect and admire irregardless of their color, social class, origin, language or what kind of beer they drink.
That is all..... Until tomorrow!
Posted by: Kaiser at April 22, 2004 05:39 PMj - I just laughed out loud in my empty house and the sound freaked me out.
steamwand - I LOVE that place! Sorta like Boatdocks, if it had juice and ever broke overhead. One of the only places on Bali with a predominantly Muslim population. We were there about this time last year, when the war in Iraq first started. The local guys all knew we were Americans - a couple of them would translate the morning newspapers to us over coffee and we'd talk about what was going on. They were NOT happy with what America was doing. Just the same, we never got any vibe in the water - just BIG smiles and hoots into waves.
Posted by: Jimmie at April 22, 2004 05:59 PMEvery morning the SUVs full of daytrippers would show up, I'd feel all proprietory and resentful for a split second and then realize, "What the FUCK am I doin'!?" Crazy farang!
a rambling music report from the last two nights - skip ahead to next spot exposure if not musically inclined.
4/20: MMW at Cafe du Nord. I forgot who posted that they went to this show and thought it mind-blowing. i just thought it blew. i've seen MMW countless of times and have enjoyed every show until now. i don't know what Medeski was trying to do, but Martin and Wood laid down some fine jimmie jams until Medeski would drop some screeching organ over the top and slice the tune like an guillotine. maybe the wanted to be a bit more “experimental” because they were playing in a small club? dunno but their last show at the Fillmore was ten times better. and what was up with the guy had his pipe/stash in his shirt pocket subsequently taken by the bouncer and the other guy smoking outta a 7up can?!? rank amateurs.
4/21: Fantoms at Fillmore. funny that i wouldn’t dig MMW with the “experimental” tip but Fantomas - even more experimental - absolutely destroyed. definitely a guy band with mike patton on vocals, dave lombardo on drums, king buzzo on guitars and whats-his-name-from-mr-bungle on bass. lots of covers from their directors cut album. patton using his voice as an instrument and orchestrating the tunes while jumping around like a maniac. lombardo pounding the skins one minute and caressing them the next. just amazing how these guys could keep time and create the surreal soundscapes.
big south swell on it’s way and i’m heading to maui on saturday. can you say la peruse bay? crap, i'll probably get my haole ass kicked now for sure...

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at April 22, 2004 06:18 PMYour blatant lack of respect toward women and racist comments seem a little out of charecter to the demographic your representing. I'm also confused about "regulation" usually the hemp wearing crowd isn't about violence. Oh I'm sorry you don't wear hemp? I jumped to a brash conclusion. Forgive me.
I love Pigeon Point and Devil's Slide, so please only surf there.

Posted by: kdalle at April 22, 2004 08:00 PMsecret spots are all relative to how long you have been surfing and how far you travel. OB was secret in the 1970's. Fall and small was the time (offshore and you could get out). 4 mile was where you went to get out of town. Moss was where you went for big/offshore/january fun. flats and fish heads on the wipers was the price... very cheap! this niceness thing is the best/only hope for NC surfers, young or old. sunni's & shiite(sp)come together when the time is right! violence will begat regulation. imagine a license on your board & ticket in the mail for being a dick. it will happen. i've been a lurker since bvb interview was referenced on surfline and you guys are on the right track. it's not your zip code or your property tax bill, it's your attitude...

Posted by: msurfer at April 22, 2004 08:40 PMoh man, we should probably not use the word "El Granada Jetty" in this blog anymore. And for the record, it is now blakestah's! EG pimp has competition now for those elusive east swells!
till tomorrow. niceness.
Posted by: elias at April 22, 2004 09:04 PMregarding surf shops, go to the place you like. I'd rather say what I liked about a place than badmouth another. Finding a perfect fit in a suit, or just the right board counts for a lot, and selection helps. Most places are professional if you're a good consumer. As for local only spots, last time I checked, god made the waves. We could shape them, though. Hope they do that reef in 'stralia, cause you could have miles of waves in CA - think of all the places that have it all but the last bottom contour. California dreaming.
Posted by: banjo at April 22, 2004 10:05 PMwhat's up niceness. i'm drunk and eating cool ranch baked doritos and had a GREAT night as a single young man on the prowl tonight. 'bout fuckin time i get back on the proverbial horse. i..uh...had..uhh...how can i put this niceness style....cosmic interface with a woman in an elevator tonight. i'd tell you guys the elevator location, but than it'd just get packed with people trying to have sex in it, hell they'd probably buy the elevator, bringin in their damn high value euro, hire me to run the damh thing, and charge people to bang in it, so in the name of secretness and guarding all things holy it'll remain a secret spot.
thank you mr. trojan for your contributions to mankind.
anyways, rock on, alarm rings in a few hours.
