How sweet a mornin'
Ah yeah! Like a nice cup of coffee, its a great morning brewing out there in the biggitty-bay today! Sun shining, birds flying, wind chillin, swell rolling... Rapped with Bug last night about the possibility of a DP sesh. The monster-mush swell on the way day, giving way to more local windswell. Winds properly in line throughout the night. Rolled down to the beach and was greeted with nice, glassy conditions. Waves looking pretty small but shoulders all over the place. Saw Bug in the lot and we ventured down the beach a bit to a less visible area which just happened to be serving up this left time and time again. Wave count just kept building throughout the session. Rights, lefts, just nuggets all over the place. It was one of those sessions where you would just keep looking down the line a ways and see these unreal nuggets spin and churn. If only you could teleport to its shoulder. When you were in the right place, pure butter....
Anyway, I got a few really fun rides on my fish. Bug got a nice little barrelling cover-up on his second wave. We were joined by an OB regular just totally stoked on this particular morning. Saw him snag some solid ones. A few others were in the mix. All in all, just an utterly beautiful April morning with some solid surf and good vibe.
Happy Friday to all. Looks like this good weather should be here all weekend providing some surfing opportunities out there. Getting some solid S juice next week. Get on it.....

A thought on yeaterdays comments...
My favorite shop was "End of the Line” on Taraval. Those guys were the rootsiest. They just pulled tubes in the back and watched videos all day. I would try my hardest to support them. But the three wetsuits they had in sock never fit me. Or the fifteen 6’2”s they had weren’t my style. However, they went the way of the Dodo because they were not in it to make it.
Support all the surf shops around town. They are all in it to make it and they will. They all provide stoke and add to the surfing experience in town. Which is obviously in abundance and went unorganized for years. Don't vibe Wise if they are putting on some event that they saw was a good idea. It just adds to the experience of being a surfer in the City. Which is a good thing for the ones that want to see the surf culture flourish in our city.
We especially don't need to treat our personal favorite shop like it needs to be "represented." That is just silly. That just takes away from what is important here, which goes on in the water.

Posted by: elias at April 23, 2004 10:50 AMBrief comments:
1) Good surf this AM. Good, fun spring surf. Broke the velcro on my leash on my last wave...just gave up the ghost. Swam to the board, then paddled in thinking, it is the first time the leash ever failed when I was planning to go in.
2) Big Yank--->Bought wax from them once. Had heard they sold lots of board to the Japanese market; essentially they were mostly a middleman shipper of sorts rather than a "We care about the locals," kind of shop. Poor selection of pretty much everything. Won't miss them, but certainly didn't mind their existance.
3) End of the line--->Went in there a number of times. During one of those time, a fellow behind the counter was talking about how Mark Gator was right to "work some street justice on his cheating wife". I mentioned that he did not kill his wife, but a friend of his wife. Counter guy says you just don't cheat on your man and it is essentially ok that he killed her. Another guy in the shop goes, "No man, you leave a bitch who does that, you don't kill her." Counter guy says something like, "What a bunch of pussies." I'm amazed. It is like I am back in some Hollywood version of the lame highschool I went to where there is a dork who says things to make the audience not care if he gets hit by a streetcar. As for the store, well, never saw anything I needed there, and in the world of surf commerce, it is sink or surf, and they sunk.

caveman, i've surfed LPB several times. it's a world class wave when it's on. it really shines at 8' and above (island style) bring your favorite OB gun. be advised that the part of the island is the "newest" and the bottom is exteremly sharp and shallow. with a little luck you might catch maalea(sp) everthing you've heard about that wave is true, it's amazing.
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at April 23, 2004 11:12 AMMet Doof at my door a little before 6. Walk to the rail. He says Sloat is a little more defined by not really any better, so we hit it.
He paddles out to the north of the bar and I go for the south knowing the current will be pulling North. He has no trouble and I have to do the swim-drag through a few short period suck outs.
Turns out the current is minimal.
Waves were Sets unto themselves. Very occasionally a pack of a few would come through but they were all so different from one another it was hard to call them sets.
Managed to paddle into one righteous wave. Angling my drop from a point a little deeper than I might normally like. Got to the bottom and banked hard to gain ground on the collapsing wall. A bank off the top and set up for the trip through the pocket up on the nose of my Trip. Truly glorious.
Doof and I both cought several short, long, closeout, mushout, down the line rides.
Lots of seals about. Not many surfers.
Offshore lumpy glassy occasional.

So. . . anyone want to know where to go, call me on the cell. I'll tell you where I am and you can go the opposite direction and score!
Disneyland for me tomorrow. That means the wind will be will probably be howling from the south. Gee, what do I do when I'm not complaining? Beautiful day, though.

Posted by: d looose at April 23, 2004 02:31 PMmjs, the outer banks breaks are not very secret, the best stretches run from the Cape south.
But, August is rarely a good time to visit. I always used to go for the World Series. I would drink beer, watch the World Series, catch the running bluefish, and surf. It is pretty quiet then, in general, too, with mostly people winterizing their vacation homes. So, whenever the World Series is, that is a pretty good time for surf.
Yeah, the Chalet sandbars are epic right now. As are the ones at Sloat. Too bar the middle is still so funked up. But El Granada Jetty is even better.
End of the Line. Those guys were so stoned all the time......it was like a surf shop run by Cheech and Chong. Except they didn't have any surfboards, usually.
I never entered Big Yank.
WRT discussing surf shops, one of the most valuable things for a consumer is the experiences of other consumers. I sure woulda liked to know Bob Wise would go to bat for me 1000% on wetsuit returns - he sent backi, for me, an O'Neill with a failed seam years after I got it. That suit is now 7 years old and I still use it. That there is only one place you can go and talk to the shaper, SF Surfshop. That the best longskate selection is at Aqua, and that they carry the top selling surfboards in California, Merricks.
To re-hash my arguments on WISE movie nite.....I've been here 8 years. In that time, before Bandini, there were no surf movies, at all.
Bandini has done a bunch, maybe 8 or 10, including some really local stuff like Sylvain's short. Wise, on the other hand, represents the majority of surfing revenue in the city, and could easily squash Bandini's surf nites.
Bandini really brought something to the table, and now the 800 lb gorilla is taking the ball and running. I feel for Bandini, and will support him.
Posted by: blakestah at April 23, 2004 02:39 PMI think Wise should let him have his movie nite, and, well, even support it.
All my suepr 8mm footage goes to Bandini's Film Nights. Just the way it goes. I guess I need to edit that crap soon!
Caveman, well done with the link. Perked me right up this afternoon.
In regards to music stuff, anyone ever heard of an Aussie named Xavier Rudd? I have a few songs of his that are sick. Looking for either his old album or the new one. Anyone...
Posted by: Kaiser at April 23, 2004 02:46 PMFWIW-As a regular customer I was in Wise the first week he moved. That very first visit I recommended that they show outdoor fims at night in the circle outside their shop and invite the Mermen to play before or after. He never did it.
Posted by: kdalle at April 23, 2004 02:50 PMfilms...spellcheck...sheesh.
Posted by: kdalle at April 23, 2004 02:52 PMSince Blue Horizon is part of some Billabong "tour", I'd guess Wise got hooked in that way. I can't imagine them going to the effort that Bandini puts into it on a regular basis. Bandini works hard. I've kicked back with a beer and watched him.
Posted by: R3W at April 23, 2004 02:54 PMya, im not thinking wise stole the guys thunder or nothing. its kinda like jack Mccoy has been around longer that taylor steel and wise has been around longer than aqua. im just glad i can see surf movies on the big screen like the old days.

Posted by: bbr at April 23, 2004 03:28 PMyah, ditto that...remember the billabong air show? my guess is that it's all a part of billabong's marketing plan.
'course, that's another reason to back experimental zombie cinema.
ah, whatever. i like them both. plus i'm stressed out and annoyed that i missed the DP this AM. sounds fun. i used to think the term "utility session" was just lame, but i think i'm coming around...at least today. i could use one of those.

Got to Linda Mar, all set to go in, and the damned wetsuit zipper breaks (missing a "tooth"), so it comes undone. Tried to surf anyway, but the suit filled up like a water balloon, and I have a hard enough time without the extra 50 pounds. Then I realized it had come undone from the bottom up, so I can't unzip it to get the suit off, or even to get my car key.
So, a blown morning, ...and now what? Sonlight (who kindly helped undo the zipper), says it'll take weeks to get it repaired. I'll have to pick up a spare suit.
FRICK!
Maybe I'll ask my wife to sew me into the suit tomorrow morning . . .

Posted by: j at April 24, 2004 04:33 PMwhat up niceness crew! not much time here... but... a little recap..
full-on nicaragua. Dusty, dirty, impoverished, friendly, ancient, primitive and exilerating. lerm and i have scored a might bounty of waves thus far. freezing cold water greeted us for the first few days. coldest i've ever been while surfing... no joke.. blue-lipped, jaw-chattering ice-water. crazy offshores causing some serious upwelling.. but the waves.. damn!! We've been blessed with consistent groundswell the entire time.. averaging 3 sessions a day (5 sessions 2 days ago). A-frame, lowers-like reefbreak with only 2 others for about 10 sessions.. then a punchy, A-framing, pocket-beach break for a few seshies, then a boat-trip to a deep-water mysto-reef with just 4 people.. loads of waves..
but.. wow.. the culture here.. the way of life, the flow of the people. eye-opening.. jaw-dropping.. mesmerizing.. life-affirming..
we are lucky.. most of the world lives VERY differently than we. ramshackle, agrarian, stone-age village life.. amazing..
surf!!
playa yankee tomorrow for the macking south swell.. then madera.. then el salvadorian right points for 2 weeks with jocular jake!!
peace

Posted by: ben at April 24, 2004 07:12 PMe - good to hear you're doing well. Sorry to hear about the cold water though. Reminds me of my teens during the 60s in Southern California - hunched on my board, teeth chattering, legs going numb and blue, a deep, nearly permanent chill slapped across my shoulders. Rarely bothered with a wetsuit in those days. Those beaver tails were a bad joke, and even the best O'Neills available back then offered NOTHING like the comfort we get from modern wetsuits.

Last night I epoxyed my wetsuit zipper closed down low where it was busted & opening up on me. I can still get in and out of it okay, and the main thing is I can surf!
Far south of Linda Mar this morning 8-9:30 with slow rollers that politely left paddling gaps; nice stuff to wake up to on a longboard.
Then...the fambly wants to stay home, swelter, and do their own deals, so I get out again---this time Rockaway, 1:45 - 3:30. Bigger waves, many close-outs, more of a paddling workout, but FUN. ZOOM! Hee hee!
There are some awesome surfers on the surfpulse OB webcam right now.
