Foggy, grim, colder
Yeap, it can't be 80 degrees and sunny every day. Or can it? Today, we revert back to what we would typically consider a "good" late Spring/early Summer day. Light winds out of the SW, some minor S swell still in the water, mixed with some NW windswell. All in all, today would "typically" be like a 6-7 on my spring/summer meter. But, as we all know, this has not been your typical year in regards to weather. Nope, not typical at all. Still fairly surfable out there but I still passed today. I have to check out early today and head up to the capital of computer operating systems and coffee beans so I bagged it. Got up with full intentions of getting in somewhere south of OB but the guilt blanket ran thick and I went to work instead.
Surf wise, here is what is out there:
Nearshore Wind: 5-10 mph from the SW
Bouy Wind: 3-7 mph from the SSW
Swell: 3.3 - 3.6 ft. @ 15 sec.
Weather: foggy and moist (that is a great word...), should reach up to 70 or so today.
So, I am sure some peeps got wet this morning and I am sure there are some windows of opportunity to do so later in the day today. Anyone get on it today???
Enjoy the weekend, get some waves, don't drop in on your neighbor (unless they drop in on you first!)
Re: last couple of days (I've been working & surfing, no time to post...) go skate the RW City & Sunnyvale parks. They are on the map and have very surfable bowls. There are some backyard pools in the hills too. If you want the flow pony up your pool offering and we'll trade.
surfed tuesday with only my ex room-mate at mid day- fun sometimes heavy, once in a while shorebreaky & occasionally barreling waves right in our own back yard. Made a cell phone call from my SUV to ensure that all was well at work in my absence. Beautiful day, offshore to glassy....
You all want crowd control? Take a page from the DC sniper- buy yourself a 10-22 or a .30-06 and start picking 'em off. In the water, in the lot, whatever. You think sharks keep people out of the water; wait until you start shooting 'em dead. Go for it tough guys.

Posted by: Friend #1 at April 30, 2004 09:41 AMgmornin folks. i skipped the dp this morning in hopes that the afternoon winds won't be that bad.
i have a travel question - i'm heading to europe for 3 weeks this fall with my wife (non-surfer). i have negotiated a few surf days and since i'm a goofyfooter and the region is otherwise appealing, i'm thinking that i will try to surf mundaka. i'll need to rent a board and wetsuit, wanted to see if anyone knows how hard it is to do that in that area, and also get any other highlights/tips (surf & other)...anyone been there?
Posted by: loon at April 30, 2004 09:44 AMDoof and I surfed with the whales on a gold sand beach this morning. Then another guy paddled out his old plank. Kind of maintenancy session. Some fun, and I managed to drop in on doof, and get dropped in on by the other dude. That tells you how many waves were coming in if with only three of us we were still doing that.
Highlight was whales 10 to 15 feet away from us when we first paddled out.
Posted by: Friend #1 at April 30, 2004 09:45 AMSkateboarding sounds good. I haven't hit redwood city yet. Must be good since it's a Wormhoudt design.
Pacifica says they will put up a park across from shitty mar before october. That will give me an excuse to actually go into that neighborhood besides safeway, dennys, taco smell, radio shack and the mex restaurant. I can't believe the people on this site actually drive there from SF to surf. Waste of precious oil, you transplants are killing innocent americans and iraqis with each shitty wave you catch.

Posted by: loco gringo at April 30, 2004 10:16 AMboy did the beach suck today. small, inconsistant, ugly weather, ugly waves...one of those "well, i'm already here so i might as well get wet" sessions.

Posted by: luke at April 30, 2004 10:19 AMI love surfing on E. i even bring glowsticks and a pacifier out with me into the lineup. and i'm 13.
Posted by: raver at April 30, 2004 10:21 AMloon, i lived in san sebastian last year and I would recommend renting a car there and also your board and wetsuit for a few days. There is a surf shop right in "parte vieja" and they probably have boards to rent. I had two boards when I lived there, a 6'1" and a 6'7" but I think a mid range board would probably be good in most situations unless you are at Mundaka where you will definitely want more board. Also, there is pretty good surf right in san sebastian itself and it is an awesome town with a ton to do. I recommend going to the siderias, cider houses, where you can eat great food and drink all the cider you want out of 15 foot cider kegs for like $20. Great surf all in that area from Biarritz to Mundaka and fall should be a pretty good time of year.
Posted by: Tuck at April 30, 2004 10:23 AMdp session in marin county, head high peaks on the sets but high tide wasn't favorable to grandioso shapliness. worht the drive though, witnessed a couple of "win or go home" drops by mr. longboard, spongemen with finned feet were catching some thrill rides, surprised by a few lefts seemingly of the close out variety that reformed inside and allowed for some hanky panky, which reminds me....hello, to the awesomly cute wahine on the red board...good to see the fairer sex represented in the in the early am lineup.

Posted by: SFKneelo at April 30, 2004 10:31 AMCan't comment on the board rental... brought my own. Getting it around Paris was tricky.
Like wine? Book tours in Bordeaux. My wife (non-surfer) found a form letter in French and sent it around. It worked well. Go for a mix of big names and smaller vineyards. St. Emilion and Sauternes are very beautiful. Never made it to Graves. Chateau D'Yuem is a must-do if you like Sauternes. Anyhow, base yourself in Bordeaux for that stuff.
From Bordeaux, head west to Archachon, which is a cool, a bit touristy, beach town. Head South to Hossegor, Biarritz, St. Jean de Lu. If your wife likes shopping, you're set. I'd stay in Hossegor, as the others can get ultra-pricey.
Stay in San Sebastian. Great food. Fun surf.
Go onto Bilbao and check out the Guggenheim. From there, you can swing out to Mundaka. There's a cool lighthouse on the way. Hotel Mundaka is a great place to stay.
If it's small, go through Geurnica (sp?) and go to Bakio. It's a neat beach, w/beachies. The road continues on back to the main Hwy back to San Sebastian. Those roads are narrow, with beautiful cliffs, etc.
Bottom line... you'll be within the surf zone practically the entire time... with the exception of Bordeaux and Bilbao.
Great trip! Go in Fall if you can. Plan on spending bucks.
Cheers,
SFK
Raver, I'll be selling the glowsticks on the beach too, in case you forget yours. Seriously though, anyone hear about the girl in Belmont who overdosed on ecstacy? pretty k-gnar.

quick question to the shapers/repairers in the niceness family: my center fin box (Future Fins) got torqued and is loose. i can glass it back in to make is solid no problem, but given the torque it's at an angle (i.e., the left side is still firmly in place while the glass on the right side is cracked and, as a result, the fin is at an angle). if i push laterally on the tip of the fin, i can straighten the box, but as soon as i release it (e.g., as i would have to while doing the repair and while it is drying) it leans slightly to the left. any recommendations on how to straighten the box before glassing it back in place? do i need to take the box out fully and reglass it completely? (i'd rather not do this, of course) is it a big deal if the fin leans slightly? (this is my older board that is in need of a replacement pretty soon anyway)
any guidance is much appreciated. peace.

One or two peeps bobbing about. Great bird watching. There are definitely short surfable shoulder highs if ya look. Found them this morning...
*extraordinarily* off my mark, embarrassing session where 4 limbs went in 6 directions and despite innocuous appearance [ aw OB looks so cute when it's sleeping! ] found shoulder high closeouts and south juice that lurched up every time I paddled up a "channel" to chase those teasing little lefts. D'oh. I want to blame my tired arms on moving all these boxes this week, but on the plus side there will be no more 4-foot-strong-enough-to-rip-your-board-away closeouts because I did you all the courtesy of taking every single one on the head, there simply aren't enough to share everybody. Mine, all mine! That's what I get for expecting to just float around. It's entirely gutless looking now. However I'm still betting on those short shoulder highs and also a sneaky current. Drifted 4-5 blocks for the morning commute. Had fun despite the joy of entertaining the dog walkers and joggers. Cheers,

Things to do instead of surf for the spring/summer:
Bodysurf
Ski Squaw
Bike
Skateparks are epic and 6-8' everday all summer, invade those, bring 80 beginers, build more, no prob cuz
windsurf (don't kite it will kill someone)
run beaches / do triathlons
Just don't surf everday like you're at surf practice for the pro tour. Besides it's bad for your ears in this cold water. And your back.

Get on it Saturday before the wind does. Should be a little wind by late morning, toast by 2 pm, and predominant NW flow for the next few days (with predominant NW windswell).
Keep pimpin.
Posted by: blakestah at April 30, 2004 03:37 PMI surfed OB somewhere in the 12:30 - 2:00 region (you could have seen me on "big brother") and had almost exactly the experience that sharkbait reports so nicely above. Looked mellow on the driveby, but the paddles out were hit or miss or miss or miss (gotta get better at poking my longboard through waves). I kept trying to hit this left that looked good every time it clobbered me paddling out, but I mainly caught short-lived steep-faced closeouts that had me either burying the nose at the bottom or riding mush. A couple of good rides, though, and it was plenty fun. Just a few other people were out, most of 'em periodically getting out of the water, marching down the beach and getting back in.

Posted by: wrybread at April 30, 2004 03:45 PMInitial conditions: Everyone has fairly equal amounts of currency. Everyone is involved in one of the "menial" professions - shelter construction, food and energy production. Everyone in these professions can produce slightly more than he needs. [Why? The fact that other societies have artists, politicians, scientists, salesmen, etc... none of which are involved in the "menial" professions... shows that this is possible.] Let's say each person is able to produce enough for the survival of 1.7 people.
II. An inventor creates something everyone wants and is rewarded with more currency that he can ever use (if he lives like everyone else). He stops working. His real production value is now 0. A slight inflation, but hardly noticeable.
III. The rich man can now afford to pay for the livelihoods of other people. So he hires people away from the "menial" professions. Real production drops, inflation goes up. But the rich man and his employees both have more than they did before. The employees become lawyers, philosophers, politicians, soldiers. Other "menial" workers stop their work and become salesmen, to convince the rich man that there are other things he wants, and thus get rich off the rich... just like stockbrokers.
IV. Laws are passed by the rich man's lawyers, enforced by the rich man's soldiers. Eventually the "menial" workers become the poorest in the land. Some sell out to the rich man. Others work the rich man's land as hirelings. Others go into debt to try to keep production up.
V. How has civilization survived so long? What is the balancing mechanism? Revolution. After the revolution, the cycle starts over at step I. If the rich have hired enough soldiers, revolution fails to happen on a large scale. Instead, there is petty crime.
VI. When democracy was invented, revolution became part of the system. No ruler could rule for more than 8 years. However, because rulers are either rich themselves or are funded by the rich to run their campaigns, very little is done. And so the voters tell themselves, "Well, better luck next election."
VII. When the corporation was invented, a new kind of rich being came into existance. This rich being has even more currency than rich individuals (though loans, stock, earnings, etc). It hires more people away from the "menial" professions to be patent lawyers, to make office equipment and office furniture, to build skyscrapers, to try to create greed through advertising, to print company newsletters. Short-term gain for the employees followed by long-term inflation of the goods produced by the "menial" professions.
VIII. Maynard, Karl, Ayn, and Alan each have 100 g.p. (that's gold pieces for you non-dungeons&dragons economists). Maynard and Karl put their gold in First Bank, while Ayn and Alan put their gold in National Bank. First Bank has 200 g.p. and can now give a 50 g.p. loan to Alan. Alan now has 150 g.p. in his bank account. When Maynard and Karl check their bank accounts, they still say 100 g.p. each. National Bank now has 250 g.p. and makes a 100 g.p. loan to Maynard, who (according to his bank) now has 200 g.p. in his bank account. Back and forth it goes. Money magically appears without a single paper bill being printed. It can't be helped. The question isn't whether money should be created out of thin air, the question is what those people are being paid to do. Producing skyscrapers? Producing palaces? And then Malthusians wonder why there are so many people but not enough food or basic shelter to go around.

* easy access
* little to no paddle out
* plenty of parking - bring some friends!

SPECIAL INFORMATION TIPS:
Protected from the Northwest, north winds are OFFSHORE here!
The peak shifts as the sand bar shifts, but is closest to the jetty. Best on a high tide. Breaks well between tides, but really high tides put the breaks too close to the shore. BEST WAVES BREAK ALONG THE JETTY. Mostly rights, but with a 5' and up swell there are tasty lefts off the peak. Can get UNREAL on a clean south swell. The beach break is fine from 3' and up, but often sections. Beware of inshore rocks. If you're interesting in scoring some after sesh drugs, ask around for the local dealer, EGPimp.

Posted by: at April 30, 2004 04:17 PMHey no name, have you read 1984 recently? I just read it again (gee I wonder why), there's a great section of it where Winston is given The Book that the party uses to keep the masses in line. Some great theory on how the few keep the many subjugated. It's all online, go to this link and search for the phrase "THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF":
http://www.mondopolitico.com/library/1984/1984_c17.htm
Really amazing read. Lots of what you mentioned is in there. My favorite part is the section on what to do with the surplusses that economies generate, since giving those surpluses back to the people would eventually raise them out of poverty and ignorance and make them harder to rule. The solution: spend the surpluses on expensive projects such as war. I read that part the day W was talking about the need to send people to Mars...

Our organization has watched you since your arrival here. You have worked relentlessly to deserve this fine honor. Now as an "entitled one" it of the upmost importance to perserve your domain. It's no longer acceptable to "clue in the clueless" by disclosing hard earned "entitled one" knowledge. It's espicailly important to remember this about other members regions as not everyone reading this site have put in the hard earned commitment like yourself and desreve to reap all the privelage that knowledge brings. Perhaps your intentions are not evil, but consider yourslef warned that disclosing anything but vaque generalizations regarding geography and conditions outside of your region. Could have you facing consequences up to and including barring you from your status. But let's not go there. Let's stay niceness and think in non descriptive terms. Thank you.

Posted by: at April 30, 2004 04:32 PMwhy not spend the surpluses generated by our economy on whatever you as an individual wish, for example donations to the Sierra Club and surfboards hand made by stoned quasi artisans, thus raising them out of poverty and allowing them to rule, oh wait you're already doing that nevermind

Posted by: j at April 30, 2004 05:57 PMaltabatesgrom, anonymous advice or threats are pretty hollow. I pay little attention to either. If you get caught up in the whole tranny-nontranny issue you're already dealing with a lot of baggage. For anyone that wants to know, I'm a tranny, been here 8 years. That is longer than I've lived anyplace else in my life.
EG Jetty is amusing here mostly because of its personal pimp. And the fact that almost all the 'city folks' that drive down are looking for very low impact factor waves.

Posted by: bagel at April 30, 2004 06:03 PMWhoa, where did all the creepos and lowlifes come from the last few days? Why are they so interested in this site? Is it because E left town, or something to do with the Bush administration or what?
Posted by: Bad Breath Todd at April 30, 2004 06:06 PMjeez... 3pm today was good at the ocean. then everyone and their best friend came out. it was fun. although, the vibe at that portion of the beach makes me want to barf.
with the popularity of this site growing daily, you would think that the niceness would just eminate (sp?) from everyone. but everyone seems to be utilizing the ocean for their own good as per usual..
cheers to all who maintains the niceness in the water and in this little (big) forum. i hope i run into you in the water and share a real life chat.
anyway, looking out my window at the three birds on the power line and loving the stream that kaiser wrote about the birds being local. true true.
well, its off to the weekend. good luck to everyone. and good riddance. nah.. JK.
Posted by: elias at April 30, 2004 06:11 PMWhat a bizarre mixed bag o' posts here today. Just back from a late afternoon maintenance surf at Ocean Beach. Definately shoulda had the smaller board for the semi-sucking surges that almost-acted-like waves. As it was, I was kookin' out on almost every wave just to keep the nose of my aircraft-carrier out of the trough. By the time I went in what had been a semi-decent crowd was gone. Musta started to suck just as I got in the water. Oh well, at least it was wet.
Posted by: Jimmie at April 30, 2004 07:03 PMBTW friendly, you made me blush calling my posts the other day "classy."
I'm headed south for the 'morrow's high tide - I heard that there's a jetty down there somwhere that's supposed to be "ALL TIME." ;)
no baggage, no issues, no judgement, just respect for the original code.
Posted by: altabatesgrom at April 30, 2004 08:01 PMI believe that's the playa avellennas (misspelled) pig in CR. I've seen that big assed beast, it's no joke. Chilling on the beach, taking a leisurely dip now and then. I hear it's a retired stuntpig from Hollywood. Has that big 7 bedroom place just up the hill from the break.
If I win does that mean that EGPimp is my new buddy? Cool!
Posted by: ryan at April 30, 2004 08:09 PMlol i dont think you all know how many people actually check this report for the surf info, but since that last south died and the winds came up all us horny, restless pubescents are restless. And the fact that all you old weed snorting hippies (because no one that actually smokes the shit could be as fucked up as all of you)started arguing sorta got us interested in the posts. You see, when were not surfing we are sleeping eating and shitting, we dont paint and look atflowersand shit like that, and when we do use the computer we like to jack off or piss people off, so heres some advice. Post a little porn and itll be atleast a 5 minute grace period, unless of course you have my extreme talent, then its only a 15 second grace period.

Posted by: ben at May 1, 2004 12:17 PMMoves like a fist through the traffic
Anger and no one can heal it
Shoves a little bump into the momentum
It's just a little lump
But you feel it
In the creases and the shadows
With a rattling deep emotion
The cool, cool river
Sweeps the wild, white ocean
Yes Boss. The government handshake
Yes Boss. The crusher of language
Yes Boss. Mr. Stillwater,
The face at the edge of the banquet
The cool, the cool river
The cool, the cool river
I believe in the future
I may live in my car
My radio tuned to
The voice of a star
Song dogs barking at the break of dawn
Lightning pushes the edge of a thunderstorm
And these old hopes and fears
Still at my side
Anger and no one can heal it
Slides through the metal detector
Lives like a mole in a motel
A slide in a slide projector
The cool, cool river
Sweeps the wild, white ocean
The rage of love turns inward
To prayers of devotion
And these prayers are
The constant road across the wilderness
These prayers are
These prayers are the memory of God
The memory of God
And I believe in the future
We shall suffer no more
Maybe not in my lifetime
But in yours I feel sure
Song dogs barking at the break of dawn
Lightning pushes the edges of a thunderstorm
And these streets
Quiet as a sleeping army
Send their battered dreams to heaven, to heaven
For the mother's restless son
Who is a witness to, who is a warrior
Who denies his urge to break and run
Who says: Hard times?
I'm used to them
The speeding planet burns
I'm used to that
My life's so common it disappears
And sometimes even music
Cannot substitute for tears
~P.S.
Posted by: ben at May 1, 2004 02:14 PMHoly Shit ben, that song became one of my favorite bits of poetry when "Rhythm of the Saints" came out. Paul Simon was never one of my favorite a artists, but that album is GREAT!
Going to see Orchestra Baobab tonite - old school Afro-Pop.
Ignore the haters, they'll fade back into virtual oblivion.
Posted by: Jimmie at May 1, 2004 05:02 PMHey there were a bunch of weak but fun waves occurring somewhere towards the lower middle portion of the beach today. Size was bigger than surfpulse represented, at least on the sets, which still seemed to be south. I almost didn't go because of their report, I'll have to remind myself to not bother to check it next time. Crowding was not a factor at the peak I surfed. Maybe there's a connection.
Posted by: eric at May 1, 2004 05:11 PMgrazie Jimmie, you're the man! have a good one tonight.
Posted by: ben at May 1, 2004 05:15 PMgoodonya eric, I'm stuck in the office all weekend (it's ok I need the $), glad to hear you got some good uncrowded olas!

Posted by: dogma at May 2, 2004 11:10 PMWill you please quit with the pallet and construction debris burning on the beach?
You may have not noticed but there are nails, staples, etc. in this crap and it ends up all over the place once a minor swell and tide comes in.
It's not fun walking though sand when you have a major puncture wound on your foot. Especially if you've been running and are miles from help. Besides, you're just littering the beaches, and taking time away from volunteers who have to pick up after you when they could be picking up other litter.
Also please don't throw this crap over the cliffs because you are too lazy to carry it down. That kind of behavior belongs in the deep south, not here.
Pallets do not burn well and cause major air pollution. If you are such a pyro, please get a safeway fire log or two to burn, or just go to a night club and trip out on the lights.
Muchos gracias!
