Good to be back in the water...

To avoid the inevitable cranky-ness that surely would have set in some time later today, I decided I needed to surf this morning NO MATTER WHAT! 4 days out of the water makes me angry as hell. Don't know why, its just the way it works. So, that was the theme of the morning: NO MATTER WHAT! The plan had been formed: wake up a little after 5:00, get in the car, drive and drive and drive and drive until some little rollers could be obtained. Conferred with fellow niceness regular CK last evening and the plan was put in action. Along with his traveling Aussie mate, we meet up later in the morning after a good deal of driving. Past the morning fog in San Francisco, the cold onshore winds, we finally came upon a nice little spot with no one around. Suited up and hit that crap with no delay.

Once out, I couldn't help but take in the full moon, the hills surrounding this particular break... what a great morning. In fact, with the moon as bright as it was, CK reasoned one could probably surf way before sunrise. I on the otherhand would all but refuse getting up any earlier then I did this morning, just can't do it! All in all, we all got some really good waves before being joined by a few others. I nailed my first wave and it was just a domino effect from there. I did take a few "over the falls", in fact, I hit the bottom once and I NEVER have hit the bottom at this spot. That was really strange for sure. Good times surfing with good peeps and with a good vibe all around. Couldn't ask for anything more. Well, the donut and coffee on the way back into my office wasn't too bad either.....

Don't forget, Blue Horizon is showing at the Balboa tonight. Not sure about the availability of ducets but I can't imagine it completely sold out. Jack McCoy, the filmmaker will be on hand as well. Should be cool.

Lastly, the Billabong Pro @ Teapuhoo turns on May 6th. Time for some more insane pro surfing. Keep an eye out for updates.....

I was thinking there are only two types of locals in the bay:

1. High School kid, parents moved here for dot com boom

2. Crusty fucker who moved back to parent's basement after spending 7 years college at UH. Will move back to the islands ASAP.

The rest are in jail or dead? Rent prices forced them to move to Reno?

Funny how brave people get when they are on a chatroom, and how quiet they are in the water. Save the tough talk til you are face to face with your problem. One time long ago I was surfing FP and some guy I had never seen before started snaking people and claiming local, calling the then high school kids transplants. He snaked a young 16 year old Scott Miller and called him tranny and such, scott got in his face and they almost fought even though the guy was twice his size and age, I got between the two and told the guy to pick on someone his own size (I was twice his size) The guy shut up and went in. Point, tough talk doesn't mean shit, especially on line, and anyone can claim local even when they are not. So Shut up and be nice.

Everyone play nice today and I will give more of these:

well said, Mexisurf!

Kaiser....as always great grabbin' a few waves with ya. i had issues finding my groove today (hmmm...perhaps 4 hours of sleep is to blame?...or is that just an excuse?! ; ) but the last half of the sesh was kind. killah drop, btw, on that one wave! way to stick it! my Aussie mate was stoked about his "first waves in the northern hemisphere". such a pleasure watching him score sweet rides right off the bat at a new break without even taking time to watch it. that kidz got skillz!

Saw Blue Horizon last night at the del mar in SC and had the pleasure to talk/meet Jack McCoy last night before and after the movie. Talk with Jack before the movie, he will be walking the line, handing out BH backgrounders...

Overall the movie had too much of the asp contest scene for my taste, but the jbay, metwa, and france segments were sick. the end of road footage (on the big screen) was also pretty all time. So if you subtract the asp crap, it is one of the best surf movies I have seen...esp the water shots at end of the road and seeing rasta body surf UNDER a wave. ;-O

Rasta comes off as really cool with a great POV on life, AI, not so much. I love to see AI surf, but he is mentally about 15yo with arrested development. The two emotions he shows in the movie are RAH, I won, where is my 30K...or F#$#, I lost, I am out of here on the first plane (even when he was in jbay). ;-O

Mexisurf - Is this the same Scott Miller who shapes out of San Rafael?

Blakestah. I feel for your cam-induced pain, (even if for the life of me I cannot understand how people could be such doofuses as to drive long distances to the big-ass beach only to paddle out RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CAM) so I throw 2 fun but non-destructive measures your way: One, erect a photo of blown slop-pile OB strategically in front of the cam, so no matter what the conditions, it replaces the image you see on the web. If, as you say, it is unmonitored, this should work for quite a while. You could even change the image to a different shitty-looking day every now and then. Or for extra fun, when it really is unrideable, erect a photo of firing, offshore Mundaka. Two, less stylish but equally effective: mount one of those inexpensive laser pointers to shoot directly into the cam lens. This should, um, alter its performance.
MASTERING TECHNOLOGY RULES!!

amazing how a pursuit that brings such joy can cause such passionate hate. i swear...it's like those studies where little kids will play with kids of all colors, etc. until they learn to hate. think back to why you started surfing in the first place and how none of that other shit mattered.

who gives a fuck where you're from, who gives a fuck how old you are, who gives a fuck what board you ride, what color your wetsuit is, what beer you drink, choice of vehicles, choice of clothing, career, sexuality, dog, if you eat animals, etc. etc. etc. just fuckin surf and have fun and shut the fuck up with all the bad attitudes and bullshit.

uhh..oh yeah, and rock on.

Posted by: j at May 4, 2004 10:56 AM

sweet, see you at the 7:00 show. hockey haven at 6 for a few rounds.

that teapuhoo can still freak me out no matter how many times i see the same photo.

what up niceness? just got back from the land of the nicas. i hate to brag, but man we SCORED BIG TIME. the swell was pumping the whole time we were there. surfed about 5 different breaks on the pacific coast. i'll let e go into the details when he gets back in a few weeks.

we met up with jake last wednesday on the isle of volcanoes in the middle of lake nicaragua. as i type this, they are on their way up to el salvador to surf a fairly well known series of right points.

i'd type more, but i'm absolutely slammed here in cubeland. see ya on the dp manana.

went to get a ticket to blue horizon yesterday at wise and bob said they sold out all their tickets. checked ticketweb and they either sold out of theirs or stopped selling them cause it was so close to the event. Balboa said they aren't even selling tickets themselves so they don't know anything until today when bob and jack show up to put the thing on. bob also mentioned maybe doing another showing at 11, but not sure if that will happen.

point being, anyone got an extra 9:15 ticket to tonight's Blue Horizon epic film? all my buddies are going to that one so I am out on a limb here. sorry to ask here. any help appreciated.

keep the good vibes up all, easy to get distracted when that damn northwest wind is back, keep it positive!

Posted by: barney at May 4, 2004 11:10 AM

I need a 7pm ticket...Please

Oh, and different Scott Miller.. the one I was talking about is Fireman Steves son...

Posted by: mexisurf at May 4, 2004 11:18 AM

Just 'cause a guy is a "local" doesn't mean he is a dick.

Same for "trannies".

A dick is a dick though, plain and simple.

Posted by: at May 4, 2004 11:30 AM

What, no more tix? Aaarg was about to get a couple. My bad, I'm late.

OB: Howling onshores and a lot of water being shoved onto the beach. Sunny with occasional fog fly-bys. Nothing really big - head highs plus larger - but really crossed up and pushy.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at May 4, 2004 11:44 AM

Damn, no DUCETS left? I am in need of 2 as well. I will take what I can get if anyone's got a hook up.

Lemme know.

Lerminator - glad you are back (you guys didn't break my board did you?). Drop some knowledge up in here so we can get centro-america mojo working.

Posted by: Kaiser at May 4, 2004 11:47 AM

Lerm, welcome back!! sounds like a sic trip. i look forward to hearing, reading, seeing (hint: pics!) more!

Posted by: ck at May 4, 2004 11:58 AM

We now have an official ticketless posse. Stand on street corner and rattle tin cups? Maybe find one ticket and stuff everyone in a realllly large trenchcoat, that should work.

Posted by: s.s. ticketmaster at May 4, 2004 12:01 PM

my guess is that there will be another 11pm show at the Balboa tonight. lots of folks want to see the film, why deny them?

still need a 9:15 though to party with the posse.

Posted by: barney at May 4, 2004 12:27 PM

Can I get a ticket PLEASE? Here is my plea...

Posted by: Kaiser at May 4, 2004 12:31 PM

there will be a second 9:15 showing on the other screen at the Balboa. 200 tixs will be available at the box office this evening first come first serve.

how can i collect on that offer Kaiser?

Posted by: at May 4, 2004 12:36 PM

lerm - can't wait to hear the stories. i caught a bunch of the south swell in maui last week. fun times except for picking urchin out of my knee and foot after a few lowtide wipeouts. but it's always nice to get good surf in warm water...

btw - i care about the beer that i drink. but i don't care about the beer that you drink.

Posted by: caveman at May 4, 2004 12:51 PM

Locals, trannies, cams, sf shops, etc. has really been beaten to death. Let's move on...

Welcome back, lerm! Sounds like you guys scored big time! Looking forward to the writeup!

How about those Trannies out on Polk street????
;-O

Posted by: JOHN at May 4, 2004 12:57 PM

y'all should just be thankful you can actually get in the water for a surf...tough to do with a 4 day old and a 2.5 year-old. No time for pissin and moaning about who's who and what's what and all that bs. Ahh but we all make trade offs in this life and I can't really say I'd rather be anywhere else right now...damn the little one's are cute and have a way of focusing one's priorities! Anyway, I'll be back out in the trannymobile suv one of these days looking for slurf...but in the meantime one less kook in the lineup i guess. enjoy!

bagel...I will contact you soon re: the bag. Apologies for the holdup and thanks for the kind email!

jdz, no worries Mc flurry's

congrats on the new addition again! the bag is safe and sound right now. got no problem driving it up for you either, let me know either way. thats a travel bag for all you FBI agents out there

OK WHO FARTED IN MY CUBE?!?!?!?

oh wait...that was me....

Posted by: j at May 4, 2004 02:42 PM

mwsf, Right on!!! I second the vote; all those topics are dead. Let's face it, SF's not the same as it was in the 10 years ago. Hell, I remember in the early 80's when a surfer at OB was looked at the same way natives gawked at the boys in Endless Summer. Knowing someone who surfed was a very rare thing. Seems like everyone's kid sister surfs OB today. We're all starting to sound like our grandpa's complaining about the way things used to be. The secrets out . . . Surfing is fun. Let's not be petty d*cks.

Posted by: d looose at May 4, 2004 03:20 PM

mwsf, d loose, et. al. - WORD

so, now that we're over that, anybody have any cool surf trips upcoming or planned for the summer? me, my usual monthly oregon forays, i'd like to make it somewhere tropical but that's going to depend on workload (the irony of it all, you get all this vacation time saved up but never a chance to use it), hmm....that's probably it surfwise. planning a denmark trip, but that's not surf related.

Posted by: j at May 4, 2004 03:23 PM

come summer i'm gonna spit on my boss, quit my job and go to mex to surf my brains out.

thats the plan at 3:40 in my cube. anybody wanna join me?

Posted by: luke at May 4, 2004 03:41 PM

hahahaha, i had the same plan in november/december before i transitioned out of my old department/boss!!!

Posted by: j at May 4, 2004 03:43 PM

yeah luke duude...#2 on the bosses desk ...guaranteed to get you time off for some tasty waves.

Posted by: jeff spickoli at May 4, 2004 03:46 PM

holy shit luke, i was seriously just thinking the same thing..but im gonna try to become a pro surfer instead of going to mex, and i dont want to wait till summer either.

Posted by: bagel at May 4, 2004 03:48 PM

yipes, a little person just four days into the world! i wonder what that's like...other than cold and probably a bit harsh? congrats jdz!

j...i've gotta talk with you about this OR thing. i'm headed back up there for a school in another month (ithaca's loss) and was just talking with a friend who did a bit of recon last weekend. will you drop a line? kknudson@pcf.org until friday.

Posted by: friendly at May 4, 2004 04:04 PM

damn that was a "take this job and shove it movie poster" oh well. you guys missed out on that one.

Posted by: bagel at May 4, 2004 04:06 PM

ok, ok ill give you one more chance.

Posted by: bagel at May 4, 2004 04:09 PM

Sounds like a good idea Luke. Congats JDZ on the little one. The wifey and I are working on that for next year, holey no more travels. This summer....Oregon, Namibia, S Africa and Maldives OOOOH YEAH BABY

Posted by: mexisurf at May 4, 2004 04:19 PM

jdz, it is still possible. Just repeat to your wifey, "Daddy's gotta get his surf" and get used to 60-90 minute sessions at the closest break possible, and get through the next year.

I don't want to go into anti-cam strategies here, there are plenty, mostly I don't want to take a nose-dive into negativity as part of the process. So I say simply, IF you host a surfing web cam, then it is a sure thing your neighbors hate that you host a surfing web cam. The closer they live, the more they dislike it.

And, it only takes a few people that use the cams to know when to go surf there, to have an impact. I'm perfectly willing to accept that only a small fraction of people that view the cams go directly to surf in front of them, BUT THAT IS ALL IT TAKES TO TOTALLY SCREW THINGS UP.

Its probably obvious I haven't surfed in 10 days...

Posted by: blakestah at May 4, 2004 05:23 PM

hockey haven margaritas here i come..so long suckers!!

Posted by: bagel at May 4, 2004 05:49 PM

Blakestah, you need to surf dude.

Tomorrow's theme: No surfcam/localism/baggin on local surf shop talk.

Now the jetty, that is still fair game as far as I am concerned:

Now, on to the pics:

Posted by: Kaiser at May 4, 2004 05:50 PM

JDZ,

Congrats man!! Without mis-stepping and correcting the Blakestah.I would like to point out that those 60-90 minute sessions are more like 45 minutes.. It gives new meaning to "sprint" paddle outs.

peace out.

Posted by: SF at May 4, 2004 06:04 PM

Muchas gracias all!!! Please surf something for me and all the other moms and dads who will be drydocked for a while. I will definitely try the "daddy's got to get his surf on" strategy and report back.

Mexi...travel up a storm brother cause once you gots kids...it gets a tad more difficult. Although I can't wait for the day me and the boys can go on surf trips together. Only about 14 years to go!

cheers all

Posted by: jdz at May 4, 2004 07:07 PM

thought I'd check out the inmates. Yup, about as expected. Sort of the corollary to too many rats in a cage, too many rats and the playground is closed for the season. Regarding cams, they only help confirm what you already should know. Be honest, how many times was their snapshot what you really experienced? OB is such a fickle thing. But SC's on this last south made me green as the water - jeezus that place can work. Random thot - how come nobody is selling timeshares on an uncrowded tropical break? You know, eh senor, i have really good deal for you. Sort of like ocean-front property, except its front-of-the-ocean property. $200 down, $200 a month, and nobody craps on your scene. I know, in general the commercialization of the ocean is not a good thing, but the thought of a sweet peak waiting... for...me

Posted by: banjo at May 4, 2004 07:14 PM

The Santa Cruz report for late weekend: Went to SC to see my little bro's family. Picked up a nice 6'4" SC roundpin to try out. Paddled out at Sui's at low tide Sunday and scored some overhead nugs with few people out. Actually, mellow scene. Steep drops and thick walls. After getting full, wandered over the Peak and had a few more...etc etc. Sweet session. My first experience with the epoxy board. They feel longer than they are...maybe translates to a 6'6"...more floaty I guess. Back out early Monday and nice again, though hightide. No crowd. Overhead. SwearPeak with one other. Not bad.
Cheers.
