Cinco de Mayo
Hola Amigos! Buenos diaz. Kaiser Sanchez es mi nombre.
Let's start with a little history lesson for the day. This should give you something to think about while you are need deep in chips and salsa later today:
*****************************************************************
Cinco de Mayo [the fifth of May] is one of 2 days which commemorate the independence of Mexico. Although Mexico's official independence day is el Dieciseis de Septiembre [September 16th], Cinco de Mayo is also considered a day of great importance.
Having gained its independence from Spain by 1821, Mexico continued to be a hotbed of unrest. Rich in natural resources and gold, this land was coveted by the U.S. in its push to span the North American continent, as well as by European powers who viewed Mexico as a political foothold in the western hemisphere. Its territorial disputes with the U.S. having been settled by 1849, Mexico's attention was then focused on Europe.
In the spring of 1862, after receiving word that French forces were marching on Mexico City, President Benito Juarez (a native Zapotec Indian) sent troops to head them off. It was on May 5th, in the little town of Puebla, that a small, ragged, untrained, and under-equipped army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza met and defeated the invading French, a well-armed, professional army led by Napoleon III. Though the battle was only a temporary setback for Napoleon, it proved to be the catalyst which provided the Mexicans with confidence enough to persevere and ultimately triumph over the French in 1867.
Though Cinco de Mayo is a day of huge military and political significance, we must remember that it is not the battle of Puebla itself that we celebrate. Rather, it is a day to celebrate pride, independence, and freedom. Viva la Fiesta!

Surf Report: WINDY! Yeap, really windy today. About 10-12 mph out of the NW at the coast right. But the winds are dying at the outlining bouys right now which is a good thing. Blakestah calling for some decreasing winds later today and more tomorrow as well. Things should clean up enough to get some surfy surf in towards the weekend.
Nothing much else of interest out of me today. I didn't make it to the surf flick last night, instead I did some editing of my own on some of my super 8mm footage I have been collecting over the last few years. So, spill the beans y'all, give us your thoughts on the flick if you checked it out.

Hola Kaiser and co! gracias por la historia de la cinco de mayo! esta alegria leer. (perdon mi pobre espanol, apriendo porque debo ir sud--conocer unas personas interesantes, encontrar unas olas).
Posted by: ben at May 5, 2004 09:36 AMI'm stoked to get a few this weekend...too much work lately (and for the last 8 months), and as Kaiser and blakestah have pointed out, yowza, that can get a person awfully testy--a few more months at this desk and it is time to move on! too hard for me to get in the water and no wonderful little ones to make up up for it. Congrats, jdz, those surf trips in about 14 years ought to be some of the highlights of your life!
salud amigos! buenos dias!
beunos dias amigos!
first off - kaiser - sick reporting homie!!
secondly - damn.. we´ve been scoring waves down here in the southern latitudes. Just finished up a four day swell at an enjoyable A-frame reef break.. possibly hundreds of rides all in all.. Jocular Jake has been rippin´ and it´s good to be on the shoulder as he slashes a big, phat cutback into the lip of a reeling, turquoise, offshore-groomed groundswell macker. yesterday a friend and i walked to a natural hot-springs where the local women washed clothing and the kids played and splashed.. We lounged in the aqua caliente while beat-boxing with the kids and waiting for the ladies to wash our clothes.. Jake was sick for a few days and i now i gotz it.. but.. it seems that most people who spend time here come down with something or other.. it also could be the thousands of flies living in the kitchen of the place we just stayed.
anyway.. tasty waves down here... no doubt.
finally off to the land of right-points... then i´ll be back in the mothership city of SF in less than two weeks.. I´m psyched down here but it´s also kinda rough goings.. dirt, heat, sickness, waves, heat, dust, waves, glassy waves, same food every day, more waves, massive culture shock..
peace y´all..

Visually - Great camera work/nice look and feel
Posted by: d looose at May 5, 2004 09:55 AMEditing - Actually thought it was pretty bad.
Campy and overstated at times
"Story" - Rasta - Cool guy very soulful
Andy - Pompous little pr*ck, but very
talented surfer
Crowd - Energy a little low, but the 9:00
didn't start until like 9:45, so for a
Tuesday I think we were all a little
tired
Director - Jack was very cool. Lives a life
devoted to what he loves - very
inspiring
e, dude, man, bro... you are one lucky SOB.
Posted by: bbr at May 5, 2004 09:56 AMe, glad to here it bro. got up on the super early and did some driving. got skunked. it's hard to be back after visualizing the waves that jake and e are getting. that wave is so rippable. i wish i coulda stayed longer.
anybody out there ever had a board broken on a flight? i opened up my board bad last night and surprise. broken nose. do the airlines pay for these things?
Posted by: lerm at May 5, 2004 10:09 AMJack McCoy's new "Blue Horizon" is a good movie, but it dedicates too much time covering Andy Iron on the WCT and didn't dedicate enough time to describe and portray the interesting life of Dave Rastovich. Rasta has a much more sophisticated and interesting story to portray. I don't feel McCoy did a great job on telling that story and giving enough insight about him. The guy rips on the weirdest boards much like Derek Hynd.
Posted by: El Camaron at May 5, 2004 10:14 AME, good on ya man! Sorry to hear you got sick but keep bringing them stories.
Lerminator, sucks about the board! That little thing the airlines make you sign when you are dropping the loot for the bag is their waiver. No dice on getting them to fix it. I tried once w/ United and they weren't even listening to me. Sucks for sure. Mine was merely like a punch to the rail but cracked it a bit. Didn't actually break though.
Damn, sounds like Blue Horizon wasn't all that it could have been. I am a total surf film buff and dig surf flicks. More the fact that I own most every new film out there and watch them a lot to gain influence and the like. The strange thing is that you never see Andy in any of them at all. He must be a total prick. I highly doubt you would ever see him in some Jack Johnson flick or the like.
Posted by: Kaiser at May 5, 2004 10:31 AMthanx for the history kaiser, dope. stupid french people. jk
BEST SURF MOVIE EVER! Seriously, the best ive seen besides a few classics. My only beef is the cheesy (in my opinion) soundtrack.
Had a couple at the bar, smoked a few puffs, picked up a beer at the market and cruised in to check out the 7:00. Thanks to the intermission I was able to get another beer and was so trashed and stoked at the end that I had to sneak back into the 9:00 with my ticket stub after chilling outside for a while with some pal’s. Wanted to see some of the highlights and drunkenly observe the SF surf scene. 7:00 crowd was an older crowd, respectful and knowledgeable, nicely rowdy. 9:00 crowd was rowdier and not so knowledgeable (or maybe just more drunk). But im glad I saw it with the first crowd overall. But allot of cool heads in SF and I loved seeing the streets filled with obnoxious surfers. Made me happy, reminded me of when i was 14. The whole surf movie experience was there. soo fun. Grommet picking out the raffle ticket and everything.
The movie was an awesome history lesson of the sport and culture with a little bit of a modern “reality show” touch, with the pro tour stuff at least. Amazing photography. At very first I was bummed on the narration, but that’s classic surf movie and I was over it quick. Awesome that Jack McCoy got that whole season with AI and Slater, good drama. Rasta was awesome! His segments focused on style and history and nature. Rasta’s dad was the best character ever. And I loved the part when he’s hanging out with Derek Hynd and surfs tons of boards. AI's part focused on hardcore ripping and competition. I really liked AI and his brother Bruce. They were totally real to me and awesome competitive brothers, just pushing each other. I’m also a pro ho so I got a lot of satisfaction from Andy’s parts and the tour coverage. I loved getting glimpses of Parko and Fanning and Bruce and Curren. I loved the part during rasta’s segment where they pretty much did a role call of all the stylish old schoolers. Dora, Nueava, Fitzgerald, MR and tons of others I cant think of at the moment. anyway I loved it and recommend it. stoked Jack Mccoy brought it all back. Damn.
Posted by: bagel at May 5, 2004 10:34 AMe, your stoked! feel better.
kasier, best movie ever.
Posted by: bagel at May 5, 2004 10:36 AMFunny thing about broken noses on airplanes... Every trip I have taken with my bro has resulted in one of his boards having the nose snapped off. Basically, you're SOL.
Posted by: baggage handler at May 5, 2004 10:40 AMKaiser,
Same as you, love surf flicks. My taste is more 5th symphony, Sept. sessions, thicker than water, shelter. Obviously, a bit more of the new school crowd, which is probably why guys like Andy and Bruce aren't in them. As those are J. Johnson's/ T. Steele/Malloy Bro's projects. But keeping in mind that the Irons' are only like 23/25 years old and seem to look at pro surfing life like rock star status. So their take is going to be pretty 1-dimensional. So I take their POV for what it is.
Posted by: d looose at May 5, 2004 10:45 AMNothing happening at Beach this morning. So I went back home and made everyone breakfast.......
Incidentally, I just noticed the tide and wind charts on the weather page of the Examiner. How long has that been going on? Pretty cool. Guess I have a reason to pick that rag up now.......
Posted by: limevoodoo at May 5, 2004 10:47 AMBagel, nice recap for sure. I guess I will have to hook the DVD soon.
As for flicks, the bible is Endless Summer, we all know this. Endless Summer 2 was ok. Endless Summer Revisited is better (IMO). I rank like this:
1) Endless Summer
2) Sept. Sessions
3) Shelter
4) Thicker Then Water
5) The Far Shore
There are plenty of older flicks that I could go on and on about. Most of the JJ flicks had some quality editing with good music.
Posted by: Kaiser at May 5, 2004 10:57 AMBagel, Ian, Kim, nice meeting you guys last night. You're right bagel, that first barrel of andy's in the ments is worth seeing again.
limevoodoo, is that chris from xpedior, back in the day? Small world. And Todd, if you're reading this, thank Jen for the ticket. Worked like a charm.
Posted by: lewis at May 5, 2004 11:03 AMit was funny seeing the family tesion with the irons's too, his dad all trashed, leaving the party talking on his cell phone after his kid won the first title. definately some family issues there, all the back slapping uncomfortabe hugs. they are a little one demensional but honest i think.
Posted by: bagel at May 5, 2004 11:03 AMOK, following the protocol of not reporting awesome sessions for 48 hours, here is the news. After having checked the Lane (too crowded) and "x-mile" (crowded + blown out), I surfed a usually highly regulated break (low vibe today) on the West side of SC Monday afternoon. The offshore winds + ledgy reef combined with a 3-5 ft swell to generate sucking and spitting barrels that the local crew was comparing to backdoor pipe. I've never been to pipeline, but I seeing how hollow these waves were gave me a serious thrill. Closeouts and ragdolling were fairly common on the set waves (especially for me), but I was stoked just be out there. A small crowd of onlookers was hooting at severe wipeouts, adding to the atmosphere.
Posted by: steve-o at May 5, 2004 11:03 AMoh, thats you lewis..awesome to meet you too! glad we went back in there for sure..i told jack mccoy on my way out the that was my favorite part of the whole movie and patted him on the ribs, what a maroon.
Posted by: bagel at May 5, 2004 11:07 AMe....great to hear the update!! sounds risiculous! speaking of risiculous...i hear ya on the illin'. i had a four-day spell when i was down there that was muy miserable! get well soon, amigo.
lerm...sorry to hear about the stick. sux. though i think that the chances of finding a sympathetic ear at the airlines is minimal...it's definitely worth a shot. also, did you have any supplemental travel insurance? often those packages include some "baggage" insurance so that could be a good route. alternatively, did you pay for your ticket (and/or the board shipping charges) with a credit card? if so, your card company might do something for ya. buena suerte!
re the flic...i concur with d loose. i'd add two points: (1) incredible underwater footage, (2) killah historical footage from Waimea!! all-in-all...good times for shur.
Posted by: ck at May 5, 2004 11:09 AMBIG shoutout a la familia de JDZ, congrats!
OB: Sunny and blown out. Wind's not making my windows scream yet , but it could only be a matter of time . Smaller than the past couple of days, knee-head, a 6 footy maybe plus sneaking in at lesser random intervals. Weighty mush plus those charming thigh-high closeouts. A tad less crossed up than the past two days but I can hardly see even some semi shoulders. Thought I saw a couple but the rampy waves were so close together, unless you turned 90 degrees either direction it looks like you'd crash right into the back of the wave in front of you. Never totally impossible but ob is certainly emanating a skunk-like smell. Or is that the jellyfish?
Buena [ ? espanol esta malo ] suerte, e!

not in that order. not feeling shelter..
Posted by: bagel at May 5, 2004 11:15 AMHey Lewis -- small world indeed! Skipped the movie for a poker session. Cool to hear it was worth it.....
Posted by: limevoodoo at May 5, 2004 11:18 AMlerm - Welcome home, sorry you got skunked today. Sometimes coming home offers a special type of culture shock all its own.
Posted by: Jimmie at May 5, 2004 11:25 AMe - good to hear it's been a good trip overall, despite your getting sick.
It's been over a year since we've made a significant trip, and I've been feeling the need to get on an airplane myself lately. But with my wife in grad-school, we probably won't be going anywhere any time soon.
After being such a good sport on lots of surf jaunts to crazy third-world tropical destinations, she deserves a trip to a non-surf-related European destination of her choosing. If I'm lucky I'll get her to choose Portugal, or Spain and still be able to get in some wave time.
Glad it worked Lewis, (I hate it when Jenn is right). I also liked the flick, didn't mind all the comp. stuff at all. Interesting that both Andy and Kelly break into tears after losses, made them both seem a little more human. Also enjoyed the post movie hang out on sidewalk, rode home with a smile on my face.

all time classic california centric surf flick, earlier Curren charging perfect Rincon and 8' SandSpit. Cant be beat....blows doors on all those warm water surf movies.

my favorite was SAN FRANPSHYCO!
Posted by: trannie at May 5, 2004 11:52 AMi like the 'runman' series of flicks...longer was good...the seedling....the far shore....sept. sessions....drifting was decent....olas and siestas (i like the adventure/mental vacation movies).....
Posted by: j at May 5, 2004 11:53 AMoh yeah, and north shore....point break....
actually, anybody ever seen canada 5mm (or is it 5mm canada)? decent, decent.
Posted by: j at May 5, 2004 11:55 AMwow, I'm giddy. just called for my ap to the
Northwest School of Wooden boatbuilding up in
Port Townsend, WA (finally feel comfortable with
having the money together). There's tons of room still
available in the program I'm going to start in,
so...I'm in! wow, so stoked.
Plans and goals change, but right now it looks
like next year will be great and maybe five
years until I'm doing exactly what I
really want to be doing...maybe on a boat made
with my own hands off sudamerica???
Happily, 5mm Canada is a favorite of mine. :)
Posted by: ben at May 5, 2004 12:01 PMJ, you should check out Numb, if you like Canadian surf movies.
Posted by: El Camaron at May 5, 2004 12:02 PMFavorite surf movie: City Slickers, 70's film with all SF footage
Posted by: Toad at May 5, 2004 12:05 PMNorthwest School of Wooden boatbuilding sounds dope..good luck ben. i never heard of all these crazy movies..runman was awesome though..

Posted by: bagel at May 5, 2004 12:28 PMI really liked "Weightless" which, as I recall, was distributed by SurferRag. The water shots and underwater footage were incredibly clear. They did a lot of shooting a surfer above the water, then dipping below the surface and tracking the board through the rest of the ride.
Nothing cooler to me than seeing a hand being dragged across the face of a wave while watching from inside the wave, if that makes any sense.
Posted by: Bruce at May 5, 2004 12:41 PME, Can't help ut wish I were in the tropical zone right now. Surf sick.
Ben,
Congrats on the school, I love that area and its hard to find a more amazing place to surf than there and the island a ferry away. Think west swell.

5 summer stories
endless summer
On the flick, which i totally enjoyed:
AI came accross as such a juvenille little piece of sh**, it made me wonder if Jack McCoy was consciencely editing the film to strees that, like a joke on andy. Probably not true, but some of the shit he said ON CAMERA...like the riff about money, or his sore-loser lines... And then cut to uber-soul man Rasta (or Rasta's Dad, super cool guy), its such a contrast of personalities, it seems hard to believe that its accidental.
the free surf sesh at Teehapoo was insane sick though, and as much as i may dislike what i saw of AI's personallitty you can;t argue with his skills- though on that note i did think that slates appeared to be the better surfer of the two by far. that fucker recoves from the most ridiculous almost-wipeouts, he's totally off his board and somehow ends up riding it out of the whitewater. and he rips j-bay with such total precision and perfection.
Posted by: luke at May 5, 2004 01:06 PMaaa i think those irons guys are cool, pricks but good kids. its just crazy to see thier dad and how it seemed they were raised by this surfer hippyish guy that moved to an empty kauai back in the day. country boys for sure. it was no secret that he was just all about the money. i think thats awesome. slater is the best though but maybe hes done like jordan..i like bruces style better than andy too.
Posted by: bagel at May 5, 2004 01:25 PManybody heard of "el camino real". a surf roadumentary about two couples driving from alaska to chile.surf footage is fair to poor but for south of the border travel freakers, its a guess that spot ,soul ride, with bruce brownesqe narration ."its not always where your going ,its how you get there."
Posted by: soul arch at May 5, 2004 01:27 PMyou guys that just got back ,or will get back from nica would enjoy it.

paz y feliz cinco de mayo.
i can't believe you guys left out Loose Change.
September Sessions is the only surf movie i've ever watched over and over. Endless Summer, Rell Sunn, Thicker Than Water, Singlefin:Yellow and The Far Shore round out my top five. er, six.
i really dug the underwater footage with Rasto last night...i wish more time had been spent bouncing around with him and the historical stuff. AI is a horse of a different color. a fascination, but not as interesting to me. .... then again, i also wanted slater to win.
i wonder when there'll be September Sessions sort of movie starring the ladies. i'm waiting.
Posted by: friendly at May 5, 2004 01:27 PMEh Lewis, the pleasures all mine.
Great surf movie though-
The OG rollcall, for sure my favorite Blue Horizon moment. We were goin nuts in the upper seatin seein all that old footage- !STYLE!
Great seeing good clean footage on a big screen.
If you missed it, you missed it-
Good time up in there.
Most memorable surf flick?
Wave Warriors 4
-although beyond blazing boards is a hard one to
forget. Whats really hard to forget is bein a grom at the SC Civic and rousin all the rabble- cant say that was the case for the Youts last night, yet still, a good time. Big ups Balboa Theater!
Happy May 5th to all the heads.

Posted by: ian at May 5, 2004 01:30 PMjust checked the cam at the lane and it looks like it's cracking.
but what were we talking about? oh yeah AI.
he is an absolute master of the activity that is your passion. probably better at surfing than you are at anything (or will be) in your life. (i know you may have another talent but are ya world champ?)
plus he put it out there for all to see.....so why rip on the guy? choose to root for someone else if you don't like him but to bash is silly.
i maybe that's the only way he can keep himself motivated, amped etc....
And Rasta? That's great he has the alt., "soul", non compete approach.........but he's making at least $300,000 selling you his "soul". So take him with a grain of salt.
This is not meant to be a reply to any one post today.
Just a personal rant for the fuck of it and to hopefully rattle a cage or add some food for thought.
Didnt't even see the movie....that's what's so sick about it all....
Posted by: tom at May 5, 2004 01:34 PMAI is in a bunch of surf movies. For example a part in campaign by poor specimen, momentum:under the influence; billabongs framelines, progression video magazine, in a world gone mad by alexis usher are just a few examples. Although i agree, they never do personality profiles...so he is prob. a prick. But look at Kelly after 6 titles, and Andy after 2, he hasn't even begun the transformation.
Posted by: at May 5, 2004 01:35 PMLol got a lot of jj lovers in here, but he does come out with some good stuff. Shelter is a good movie, the surfs not epic but i enjoyed how they worked longboarding with tudor into the shortboard scene. 5th symphony is my favorite sould surfing film, but 5 summer stories is epic, i cant believe its not on anyones list. oh, and the far shore? please
Posted by: at May 5, 2004 01:40 PMI meant Rasta is a professional surfer so by nature he has to have a competitive approach (businesslike) to the life....
Posted by: tom at May 5, 2004 01:43 PMI got a funny and interesting email from a traveling friend of mine, this guy is serious, one of the few who traveled the Mentawi's by land and camped with the people. One time a dropped him off at the grayhound and picked him up 1.5 years later at the airport on a flight from Brazil.. I met him in Mexico a few years back.....
pablo
well, for god¥s sake i made it out of bolivia, not that it isn¥t
beautiful
as all, but it makes peru look like a well devolped country with a
thriving
economy, and i mark the trip out of la paz as one of the possibly two
more
hellacious bus rides. i bought a ticket to b.a., she told me it was
direct,
she told me it was semi cama, she told me it was with all food
included,
sixty five dollars, she was nice, and it¥s not like i don¥t understand
what
she was saying, then i walked down to the main plaza, really
bveautiful,
shouts of protest, and the guards on every corner, with their guns to
shoot
pepper spray and who knows what else on every corner, bottle rockets
echoing
through the city, all around in 365 degrees you can see the city built
up on
the mountain sides like the colliseum or some shit, really amazing,
then i
walk back all stoked to be on the direct there in 24 hrs, i get back
and she
starts giving me all these different tickets and telling me when you
get
here go into this empressa, and the bus is leaving now so you better
go, and
i am like what??
so she walks me to where the bus is to pick up, and therew are all
these
people sitting around, all these bags, they say i got to pay two bucks
bolliviano for my boards, i am like whatever here you go, take care of
them,
the bus comes they open up this garage and start packing the shit with
bags
upon bags of coca leaf, i walk up put my guitar on, and sit patiently,
continuinly asking if there is going to be room, yes yes just a minute,
i
walk back on the bus and the focker who has all the leaves is sitting
up
laughing having removed my guitar from the bin above replaced it with
their
shit, and put it in my seat, all of he and his cronies laughing, i say
whats
up, the guy tells me to ask me the guy two seats back, he says i dont
know
anything, and it was all i could do to say fifty years in your life and
you
dont know anything, no wonder this place is such a shit hole, but
themÁn
again i have to on the bus with these folks for twenty four hours, so i
just
say, como quieren, and descend to make sure my board and bag gets on,
meanwhile the bodega is filling up with hoja headded for the argentine
border, and no signs of my boards getting on, they say well they can go
tomoorow, and i say no way, i bought a ticket direct and can not spend
another day sitting around waiting at the border for something that may
or
may not come, finally the last possible place in the bodega, i grab my
boards and stuff it in, they don say anything, pack moe bags of coca
around
it, and i just say thank the lord....
...so i board and sure enough my seat is next to the cocero numero
uno,
i sit down, now an hour and a half late we finally pull out, no movies,
no
food, i already sold all my bolivianos, no semi cama, me next to the
cocero
with my guitar stuffed in front of me.....
....i sort of make friends with the cocero just
say, i
am sorry but i was afraid my stuff wasnt going to make it on, he sort
of
laughs and we start pulling out, five minutes up we pull directly into
a
stop for food, i just stay on in fear of losing my seat, just content
to
have all my shit on board. everyone climbs back on and we are off and
up up
up, in the middle of the night, the pump breaks, the engine is over
heating
and we pullover in the cold of the night, somehow the put some duct
tape on
it, poor more water in and we are off, in the morning we pull into a
town, i
have this super rough map of bolivia, and we are stil far far far from
the
border, the bus pulls out of potosÏ, onto a dirt road, and apparently
that
it is it for the reamiander of the trip for paved roads, the main road
in
and out of argentina still dirt for 600 clicks, from peru the bus has
to be
ferried across a lake, for brazil it is a 24 hr train ride, from chile
who
knows, the boliovians hate the chileans cause they fought a war a
hundred
years ago and thÁook the little bit of coast line away from them...
....what a fucking country....
.....all the time just beautiful
beautiful
beautiful, crazy little towns, the south breaks into the deseert,
people
living just out in the middle of nowhere, some kid watching a herd of
goats,
some old woman sitting on the side of te road in the middle of the
desert
wit her funny little hat and braids, houses of mud, roofs of straw, all
just
sort of existing, but beautiful as shiiite....
....so one way or another, we made it to the border at sun
down,
i cross on foot, am ushered to the front of a line of about fifty
bokivian
and peruvians waiting to get across, they stamp my shit, welcome me to
the
republic of argentina, and i am on my way to buenos aires, the che`s
are
awaiting me with a new swell.....
...and on we go....

gracias mexi y bagel--mexi, I've checked your site quite a few times and hearing "I love that area and its hard to find a more amazing place to surf than there and the island a ferry away" from someone so well traveled and with such an eye for beauty, ahh, music to my ears. I've made a couple brief trips to the area and for some reason I feel like I breath easier up there. I will definitely be looking for those west swells, although everything I've heard/read about the WA coast says "don't surf alone." hmmm. gonna be on a making-friends mission first thing.
Posted by: ben at May 5, 2004 01:58 PM..."oh, and the far shore? please"
i'm just curious why you'd write that.
reality check: that movie is exactly why professional surfers should never confuse themselves with professional actors. comic grotesque.

Posted by: tom at May 5, 2004 02:09 PMI agree with Tom on the Rasta deal. The whole Donovan thing as well. Yeah, they are both different but they still gets solid paychecks from the big boys.
You can't question a guy like AI and his drive. There are only a few people that have the determination and desire to do what those guys do. Taj is a freak of talent, Fanning surfs faster then I can drive my gas hoggin' SUV, and neither has won a title YET! Some say Brucey is better then AI. Only time will tell for sure. It will be interesting to see what happens to AI when he reaches 30 or so and punches his dad in the face after winning the Triple Crown for the 3rd time.
Films: 5 Summer Stories is solid. 5th Symphony is quality. Loose Change is a classic. Litmus, come on, we can't forget Litums. Anything with Bertlemann at Bowls/Kaisers or Gerry Lopez killin Pipe on acid can be added to the list.
BUT, Blue Crush is the best EVER!!!!

Posted by: Kaiser Sanchez at May 5, 2004 02:10 PMjust don't get me started on Don Frankenreiter and his "sold out" approach.
Prop's to all the hopefulls who dream and slug it out on the WQS in shitty beachbreaks living 5 to a room with no money.
Posted by: tom at May 5, 2004 02:11 PMi meant "I". frick...
also, my favorite standup flick has gotta be the one where barney dresses up as spiderman and fights evil-doers and rescues broads on the beach. tons of hot chicks, lots of macking puerto, lots of SC, punk rock, my type of surf flick. can't think of the name off hand...
Posted by: bbr at May 5, 2004 02:12 PMSaw The Far Shore at IV theater and Petersen/Naughton showed up for q&a at the end. everyone was stoned and thrilled, but it turned out hugely disappointing. Some good questions were asked about things like the affects the surf exploration has had on the places explored, some good questions about the cultures encountered...with Naughton just looking like a big thoughtless jock, not even following the significance of the questions--"hey, it was all about the waves, man"...the disappointment in the room was palpable.
Posted by: ben at May 5, 2004 02:15 PMOn the plus side, after the flick I headed for a right point at 2 am to catch some cleanish overhead peelers, ran into a handful of other folks equally inspired and had a great sesh.
the other side of this comes from folks like mexisurf's friend david. great story, gritty and real and involved in the journey, the land, not just the waves. good stuff.
some words from the marketing/advertising of the site for the film.
Two years in the making, Blue Horizon is Jack McCoy's most ambitious project to date. It follows the incredible journey of two of the world's best surfers; current world champion pro surfer, Andy Irons, and Australian ‘soul surfer' Dave ‘Rasta' Rastovich
"soul surfer" is a marketing term now......it's showbiz so even though I'm not a pro ho......training for, competing and winning the world tour is pretty soul.....
Posted by: tom at May 5, 2004 02:18 PMben - congrats on getting into the boat building school! one of my best friends builds boats as a hobby, him and his dad have together built some AMAZING classics - century's, chris crafts, etc. they are currently working on a ventner (ventnor) - were apparently one of the fastest boats on water at the time. when you're up there you should check out some of the ACBS shows, they are at all of them, good stuff. oh, and you'll find surf up there...just get a good map and go exploring, bring a friend and a first aid kit.
Posted by: j at May 5, 2004 02:21 PMfirst aid kit, eh? sweet, sounds like fun :)

Posted by: tom at May 5, 2004 02:41 PMben - Wooden boat-building school? An amazing ambition - very, very cool.
Posted by: Jimmie at May 5, 2004 02:48 PMmexi-surf - thanks for sharing that email, great stuff. David sounds like the real deal. It reminded me of trips my wife and I made back before we had kids, real jobs and the rest of the "whole catastrophe." I recall bus rides in Central America during the 70s: soldiers would stop the bus and march a few passengers off into the jungle. A few miles down the road and los guerrillas would stop the bus and march some OTHER folks off into the jungle. We'd just smile and nod, making like the clueless gringo hippies we were. More recently it's like, "Twenty hour bus ride across the cordillera, or 1 hour flight over it? Hmmm ... call the airport!" Definitely not as interesting and it costs more, but travelling with a kid has been a whole different deal. And now that our son is old enough to take the punishment, we're too old to want to anymore, HA!
toms a world champ masturbator.
im over my limit too

Boat building? How cool. I saw a documentary about Viking ships - they made their famous and fearful watertight ships with AXES. Hey can boatbuilding school make those too?
OB is lovely but blown to smithereens.
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at May 5, 2004 03:11 PMOh, and I meant those ships were made with *no other * tools but axes and bare hands. Wowzers

Besides Blue Crud I'm down with The 5th Symphony Document as my fav. Oh, the surf sucked hard today. Bring on summer please.
Posted by: dano at May 5, 2004 05:08 PMI've been to the Viking museum in Denmark. The Vikings used some old boats to make navigating up a fjord tough - the boats were sunk to make a navigational hazard. Of course the vikings knew their positions and had the advantage.
Anyway, fast forward hundreds of years, and the boats were discovered. They were well-preserved in the cold water, and re-constructed in a museum. These boats constitute most of our knowledge about Viking boats. Turns out that if you make boards by splitting down the tree, instead of cutting them, they are strong and can bend much further, The vikings did this by hand with axes. The hull shapes were pretty interesting also because the fjords have many shallow spots. They'd cover some serious distances in those boats. It took quite a lot of brainpower just to be able to replicate them.

Posted by: at May 5, 2004 05:13 PMI can't believe that "North Shore" hasn't been nominated in the "best for all the family" category. Laird Hamilton actually kinda acts. Mark Foo makes a cameo. Plot line is totally cheesy but it has great water footage (for 1987). One of those films I watched w/ my daughter and both we dug it........
