No wind, cleaning up a bit

Errrr Errrr Errrr Errrr Errrr (insert the most annoying alarm sound here) Errrr Errrr ................

Freakin alarms! Once again laying a perfect roundhouse to that mother this morning. A swooping right-hander laying the smack down straight on the SLEEP bar. That's right punk-ass, who's your daddy now bitch......

9 minutes later: Errrr Errrr Errrr Errrr (my alarm's way of tellin' me I am actually his bitch!)

Alright, I got up finally after an extra 17 minutes of sleep. Pulled from the sheets by the hope of clean waves, lite winds and some morning endorphins....

Endorphin: n. Any of a group of hormones with tranquilizing and pain-killing capabilities that are secreted by the brain.

Yeah, those things.... How appropriate that the "pain-killing" part specifically applies to my days sitting behind this here computer screen. EUREKA! Besides being born there, the term has come full circle now: I surf the dawnie each and every day for the "pain-killing" endorphins which make me numb until I depart my paycheck/cubicle domicile......

So, what was the surf like? Uh, first stop, flat but cleaner. Second stop: small but much cleaner then I have seen lately. Swell obviously down a lot and winds behaving much to a surfer's delight. Thrid stop: same size as stop #2 but a bit more mushy and forgiving. All in all, 2 people sitting in the water along the great beach of ours when I checked it. More suiting up but still very few takers. I decided against getting in thinking that a few more hours of minimal wind might make a mid-day session a little more interesting. Definitely doable out there if you are interested. Just checked the winds again and they look absent. Let's hope they stay that way most of the day today.

Sit back, relax, and dial up billabong.com today because its about to get INSANELY HOLLOW for the boys and girls at CHOPES! Not to mention SHALLOW!!!!!

Geeked up down in South San Francisco, this has been Kaiser Sanchez with your Seis De Mayo report.

Tip of the day: All the Mexican food joints will be empty today, so get on it and expect delays because you know everyone working there is hungover for sure! Go with the Chili Colorado, always a favorite......

I am going with Slates to win homies...... Who do you like?

A full moon setting
A new day dawning
Whales, seals, birds and waves
These were my companions this am.

Maintenance of my being

friend #1, i may have shared some waves with you. beautiful morning. about 3 or 4 humpbacks cruzing the lineup at slizoat. it appeared that they were scoping us out. at one point, i was afraid to drop in on a wave cuz i thought i might hit them with my fins. super glassy mellow session out there. got some fun drops and a few good sections. the bay area is a magical place.

Posted by: lerm at May 6, 2004 10:13 AM

back from pLAstic, god i don't like it down there. dribblers at the bu'. always great to read a few days worth of posts. flick sounded good. ian, wondering if we ever threw frisbee's at the SC civic together?

ben, spent some time in the late 80's living in WA, surfed breaks on the coast and in the sound. mellow scene back then even when it was good. i recommend solo treks when traveling on native american land. bring "things" to share. snowboarding boosted the surfing population. still off the beaten path you can find it.

i'm backing luke for t-poo. so close last year. he deserves a win.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at May 6, 2004 10:26 AM

Lerm, saw you pull in the lot. Thought about suiting up but couldn't bring myself to do it. Although should have to chill with some 'dem mammals this morning. Good shizz there.

Decent waves?

suuuuup niceness --

SC looks like it went off this past weekend, sweet!

so i'm mostly posting to give props to mexisurf, that letter from his friend was amazing! i tip my busdrivers lately to try to earn my board some extra protection, maybe a private rear compartment; cocoa leaves actually sound like they would be some nice board padding...

lerm, sucks about your board! i've had the same thing happen before. you'll be back in the cali surf swing soon, and remember to enjoy your massages, female company, etc. now that you're home. if anyone goes to the east coast (christian, you in nyc?) please eat some pizza for me.

otherwise, Shoutout to the rest of you in niceness land... kaiser, keep the chicas coming, bagel you're classic (esp. that aggro surf flik pic), keep the good vibes rollin' ck...

E is healthy once again and will be back to his smooth surf flow soon... so North we go.

Much love niceness...

kaiser - diggin the reports, i can identify on the alarm clock shit! i actually talk to mine sometimes...."shut the fuck up, i'm awake!!"....than i realize it's an inanimate object....

my new board is STILL in line at the glassers....poor girl is sitting on a shelf all alone...shivering, naked, no glass to cover her foamy assets...dreaming of better days...fantasizing about me laying on top of her as warm waters caress her rock hard belly...

ROCK ON, IT'S ALMOST FRIIIIIDAY!!

Posted by: j at May 6, 2004 10:42 AM

j- that description of your new board was priceless, but it got me sorta' distracted from my work. Never thought about my seven boards having a gender but now they all have to be female. (Yeah, seven. I may not surf well but I have good credit.)

Posted by: Bru at May 6, 2004 10:52 AM

yeah j. nice. why does it take so damn long to get a board made? i might just buy my next one off the shelf.

jake! hope you guys score huge. good to here e is feeling better. how 'bout you?

kaiser, there were some fun waves coming through, but you had to be in the right spot. i hadn't surfed in a week, since i too was sick in nicaragua, so i was going out no matter what. btw, have to give you props for the reports. looks like e has some competition. he was kind a bummed that people were digging your reports so much. but also stoked that you were bringing it.

s.s. where is our ob update?

Nice post Friend #1

Posted by: mexisurf at May 6, 2004 11:12 AM

I was accused of being a world champ masturbator yesterday but my few minutes of fame ended when J claimed himself to be the champ and me the runner up.

At the competition J won because of his openeness and honesty. He did not feel shame and is a self actualized individual that demonstrates self love.

However some quotes from my runner up performance I will share....

"he gave it one hell of a shot"
"he left it all on the playiong field"
"he really creamed the rest of the competition"

and naturally from the female area of the stands...

"what a beautiful ..."
"i'd love som o dat"
"the women who have shared him are so lucky"
"i heard he can go all night"
"how can I join his harem"
"and he's smart too"
"I hear he also rips on a surf board"

Posted by: tom at May 6, 2004 11:15 AM

it hasn't been THAT long....maybe a month...but it's been the longest month...i think it's taking so long because waterman's guild is doing the glassing and i'm guessing harbour, bruce jones and the others they glass for get priority over the small shaper doing my board...that, and i'm pretty damn sure the south swell had something to do with the delays....

Posted by: j at May 6, 2004 11:18 AM

jake...wassup?!! sounds like you guys are rippin' and scorin'! nice. enjoy the land of rights...t'was good to me and my lady-charger. might be a bit mellow after nic, but hopefully ya dig.

lerm...sounds like a cool sesh with our warm-blooded, air-breathin' companions. to the early-riser go the spoils!

Posted by: ck at May 6, 2004 11:36 AM

I miss e's reports. He's a voracious pic gatherer too, of the remarkable, unpredictable kind.

Posted by: bad breath todd at May 6, 2004 11:54 AM

OB: It's surfable but really silly. Overall impression is it's doable but winding down. Waist to head insiders scattered up and down the beach that are breaking into moosh or closing out or both, or not breaking at all. A handful of 6 footers but don't count on it. Outside almost, but. ..nah. Some peeps here and there, picking a spot just about anywhere and going for it but my guess is the veteran ob puzzle readers will find the rides today, the rest of us might have a good swim. Seeing some goofy lumpy rides on goofy lumpy waves..a quick drop, some wavering turns, and then a fall flat on the back seem to be the norm. There are a couple of super talented peeps who were ripping the heck out there too - lord knows how they do it! Light to medium light onshores threatening to pick up? Sunny with haze also threatening to go either way.Currently the sun is winning. Judging from the little rides the waves don't seem to have much juice for board pushing but for head pushing on the paddle out there looks to be a few with your name on it. Okay, my name. They always find me.

I am a "stand-in" reporter. I will welcome my position back as a "poster" when E returns. But thanks for the props to all y'all. E definitely brings a unique perspective that I don't have. I am sure we will get some solid posts for some time after this trip of his.

Tom, classic post. Might be one of my top 5 of all time! "and he is smart too!"

HA, classic.

kaiser: nothing wrong with your perspective. sure e blends a groovy hippy sensibility combined with some fantastic $5 words. but you got game bro!

tom: so farking funny that my boss asked to read what was making me lol so hard. thankfully, i still have my job.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at May 6, 2004 12:45 PM

-That also means it may be smarter to pee on land, instead of in your wetsuit. Urine helps sharks locate seal rookeries.

bummer

Posted by: bagel at May 6, 2004 01:15 PM

surf. good.
my schedule has been crazy, no posts, reading the days recap at like 10pm. laughing. good stuff everyone.

cheers on the more positiveness these past few days.

j, all the glassing shops were set back by the south. i have two boards waiting in SLO for friends and they were set back a week due to the swell. when its flat and windy, more gets done. when its sunny and nice, & plenty o south. no work gets done. funny how the surfer/glaser/shaper schedule works out. this guy in watsonville that glassed another one of my boards, who has been glassing for 10 years, doesn't really surf. he had my boards in 3 days.

anyway, stoked to see the CHOPOO results and pics. go kelly. it would be so hot if he won another championship.

aight. peace peace.

kdalle, I did some reconnaissance last nite, in search of mr twinzer, I think I can hook you up with him again. Because, you know, you can never have too many. He's still shaping...

Posted by: blakestah at May 6, 2004 01:52 PM

bagel...just make sure you eat some asparagus before you surf. What's the deal with that?

Posted by: jdz at May 6, 2004 02:00 PM

Been pondering how we protect spots and there are a number of innovative possibilities.

We could go nautical, as in "I hope you liked the pics from Sunday at 36 degrees, 7 seconds"

Or develop a crypto system, as in "462" was small as usual (look at your touch tone phone). Better yet, Ethan could sell secret decoder rings in retro 60's psychedelic colors.

Maybe Kaiser could post a pretty woman pic but put the latest surf report in 3 point font in a strategic location. You have to copy the photo into an application and zoom in 500% to get the secret message. Explain that one to your boss when he/she walks by your cubicle.

This could be really fun, especially on boring work days (like today).

Other ideas?

10:45 or so I drove by OB and thought it'd be like sharkbait said it was, except with the odds of a good ride further reduced by my special brand of ineptitude. So I drove to Sifica, where it looked better: more consistent, though a little smaller. Waist to head, lots of different shapes, some lulls (though damn if I got to paddle out in many of them). Really one of the better days I've seen there (usually either really small or mainly close-outs). It was starting to get a little windy (SW?) as I left, though, so I'm not saying you should head out there now.

Right out I caught a lovely little right for a nice long ride, and was sure it was gonna be an amazing session. But then a couple of plummets that I couldn't do anything with, a slip off the board on a nice wave (okay, I may need to add wax more than once a month), and some pull-ups to get out of people's way (I started out at this spot all by myself but ended up with 20 around me . . . In the end I got just a handful of good rides, but plenty of fun, a good workout, and no nastiness.

oh word jdz, that was just an little part of that shark article..heres another freaky bit..

Statistics do bear out the notion of a "red triangle" off our coast. By far, most attacks since 1950 have occurred: off Sonoma County (nine); Marin (12); San Francisco, including the Farallones (seven); San Mateo (10); Santa Cruz (four); Monterey (nine); and San Luis Obispo (six).

the guy who wrote the article is coming of a little too cool though..

Posted by: bagel at May 6, 2004 02:44 PM

My favorite line is describing the third and fortunately least common way great whites attack: "Most devastating is the 'breach and crush,' where a shark leaps out of the water and pounces upon its prey. When it hits, it sounds like somebody smashing up a wicker chair."

Holy crap.

And just wanted to chime in that Kaiser, love your posts, way to keep the report going.

Posted by: wrybread at May 6, 2004 02:52 PM

Er, thank you sf, though if you saw me paddle about you'd realize just how pretentious these ob posts are!

speaking of... OB: confirming a la 11:55 post, except the wind machine has clicked on and it's definitely wound down. Checked it personally and selflessly and, uh, yeah, had a good swim! Arvo not looking good...sorry peeps

LOST: a channel. If found, please return.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at May 6, 2004 03:03 PM

What would we do with out Sharkbait? Ha.

Moose, I like the idea. I will get working on a solution for when E returns. I imagine I can rig something in photoshop or the like.
