a nip o' swell.. some potential out there
Meaty windswell winding its way into our shores right now. It looks like this burst will only last 24 hours or less.. as the california buoy is already down to 8sec. But.. it should diminish gradually over the next few days. OB looked haggard but within range for the stout of body and determined of mind. EG Pimp's stomping grounds most likely fired off some delicious morsels. Find your spot and go get some olas. With the wind blowing out of the SSW Lindy might turn on for the lunchtime high-tide. Be on the lookout all you lovers of the lindy lunchbreak.
surf!! so fun.
Ok.. soo.. further developments in the quest for the hidden Isle of Barhedral Zaharzabo. If you remember, last week i received a strange letter containing a note and a delicate, multi-colored wooden pendent. The letter spoke of a hidden island off the coast of north africa and explained that the flower-shaped pendent was in fact a key to unlocking the cloak of insivisibility surrounding the island. I also found a book given to me by my grandfather that explained that the vivid, profound and often frightening dreams i experienced as a child (and as an adult) could serve as the medium through which clues to finding the island were revealed. Soo.. on friday afternoon i returned home from work and began fiddling with the wooden pendent, referred to in the mysterious letter as the Flower of Zibe. The Flower of Zibe seemed solid but i noticed a subtle malleability to it's petals of various color. Each petal had a different color. There were 10 petals in all and the colors ranged from white to to green to red to dark blue. Stymied, i opened the large book given to me by my grandfather and opened it up. The book looked and smelled ancient. It contained nearly 1000 pages and many of them were hand-written, with scratched out phrases and words and passages written in the margins. Much of the writing in the beginning was in Latin. Toward the middle the language switched to old english and i saw many passages signed by my ancestor Marmaluke Dohefdron. I saw reference to the Rosicrucians, Talmudic numerology and other esoteric 18th century occults of religious mysticism. There were many maps and diagrams throughout the book, mostly depicting the atlantic coast of northern africa and southern Europe. The Flower of Zibe was sketched out enumerable times. It looked like countless, deeply thought-out mathematical formulations had been made in an effort to unlock it's message. Repeatedly i noticed references to the golden mean, to the spiralling, ubiquitous, pan-natural shape of the pine-cone/shell/milky-way/graphical derivation of phi. At the end i noticed 20 or 30 pages written in my grandfather's own hand. I began reading some of the things my grandfather had written... but soon i was nodding off to sleep... and into a dreamworld of renewed vigor that i hadn't experienced since my childhood.

OB: good grief it looks like winter. On the inside, rows of crossed-up whitewater and lumpy closeouts that only look small because the outside is so huge. Chunky well over OH bombers in the back. If you have minimum 30 minutes and the desire to feel like a salmon swimming upstream then the paddle will suit you just fine. However what you'll find out the back will not be the hallowed spawing grounds [ and your death] but shifty , lumpy, mow-you-down waves. Could be surfable, but. Less size and more mush with incoming tide. Sunny w/haze on the horizon and whispering onshores. No one out that I can see, good luck...

******************
Justin,
How you doing? I just got back from Kauai and had some great waves on the
South Shore with the recent swell last weekend. It was huge. Felt like the
North Shore of Oahu during winter. I saw this break aptly named Acid Drop.
It was incredible. It looked deadly. Locals were droping in, turn and then
getting 4-5 second standing, grinding, barrel rides. It was scary. The
exploding waterwhiter was bigger than the wave. It was that shallow. I had
travelled all that way and could barely find a place safe enough to go out.
Finally went out a the break next to it called centers. Centers was still
hairy and crowded also. The right was a much longer ride but the left also
worked. I finally had to sack it up and take off on the less crowded left.
You couldn't believe my relief after I took off, held on, and then exited
the wave. I was so happy that I even took a wave. I surfed for two hours,
worked very hard and just got 4 waves or so. Some guys had quite a few
waves but most were also working hard to get their wave or two. The next
day I went back at daylight and had a less intense experience sincet the
swell had dropped. Still I saw a guy eat it on a small wave after trying to
pull into the barrel. He took off, turned, tried to tuck but the curtain
landed on him. He later came back to tell his friend whom he had been
encouraging to "just do it brah, it's makable," that he needs to paddle in to
get some stitches. Guess he hit the reef on that wipeout. Luckily I didn't
take this guys advice.
Take care.
Craig
P.S. I'm going to visit my sister in the Maldives in 2 weeks.

Ok, the north-exposed places are too big for me, the accessible south-facing one apparently is too small. Too late for today, anyhow, but in a situation like that, hypothetically, would one expect to find a happy medium as one went a bit further down-coast, as the south-facing coastline gradually came to face to the west and gradually became less shielded from the north? Or does that kind of "averaging" not work in practice?
Posted by: Klooless Kook at June 15, 2004 11:41 AMtreading on rough water here.........once upon a time some now "destination" surf spots where simply, "the cove north" or "that reef south of...." granted where you speak has obstacles to overcome.....but no sense in putting the un-aware in harms way....
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at June 15, 2004 11:41 AMit's been 2 months since i paddled out because of travel(work not surf), dings(thank you united, another story), stolen wetsuit, and more work. many thanks to the niceness crew for helping me thru this dry spell!
but this morning, 7am, it all came together and i finally made it out at taco lindo. nothing brilliant but there's some fun to be had. mostly shoulder high closeouts with the occasional cleanish rideable wave coming thru. i, of course got smashed and mushed and had some great wipeouts but managed to catch one real wave that made me think that i could actually surf! i made it all the way to the beach and got a couple of turns in. a few other folks were out and some were getting some good rides. did i say no wind!

**************************************************
No, not the north shore of Oahu but the new show on Fox!
Overall, I give it a 7 out of 10 for the first show. The characters were a bit weak but you would expect that for the premier.
Basically, it goes like this:
Intrigue abounds at the Grand Waimea hotel, an exclusive Hawaiian escape for the wealthy, powerful and beautiful. Hawaiian native Jason Matthews (Kristoffer Polaha) runs the hotel and makes sure every guest gets everything they need. But when former flame Nicole Booth (Brooke Burns) arrives as the hotel's new Director of Guest Relations, Jason's world is turned upside down. But Grand Waimea owner, Vincent Colville (James Remar), is staying on top of him to make sure his past with Nicole won't affect their work life.
- The best part about it are the guests. This week you had the following: the 15 yr old HOT daughter all over the lifeguard who later claimed rape. The female professional tennis star (HOT) who claims to be "wild" who turns out to be a lesbian and her partner is her "publicist".
Surf Angle: Jason's dad is a surfboard shaper and in episode 1 he is currently shaping a gun for Laird. He is on Jason's case for not surfing in 2 months. The lifeguard is also a surfer/surf rat.
Surf Action: Two scenes on the north shore. 1st: Sunset with the lifeguard out for a surf. It sucked. Fox showed him going right and then left. In both cases, he was going frontside. Either he was switchfoot or Fox has their heads up their asses. Very disappointed here... 2nd: Closing scene of shaper dad and GM guy paddling longboards out in a junky swell on the north shore. No waves.
Overall: Weak surfing. I expected more. Show was decent. Unless the Giants are on, I will stay tuned.
Ok, this is Kasier Ebbert with this week's E Entertainment Report

Posted by: Happy Medium at June 15, 2004 12:07 PMFunny (sort of) story. Well after the rain stopped one day I paddled out in front of parking lot at Kaiser's favorite cove. Small, funky, but I needed to get wet. All of a sudden those round ports on the front of the pumphouse/bathroom open up. Out streams this brown/red water which slowly oozes out to the line up. I'm stuck there waiting for a wave while the water gradually changes color around me. Yuch! I finally got a butt-slapper into the lot and showered for about 90 minutes.
The only thing higher in grossosity was a couple of years ago when the little blue jellyfish were so thick that they ended up in your hair.
I'm getting the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it.

Posted by: searoom at June 15, 2004 01:01 PMCousin Pat and I were walking down that same fateful beach nearby to the pumphouse a few years back. As we were walking and talking a wooshing sound was heard and (I hate to one up you) a freakin' gusher of goo-water came firing out of the pipe for a solid 30 seconds. We were about 20 yards away just standing there with our jaws flapping in the side-shore breeze.
Needlees to say we retreated to the safety of Martin's Cafe, Cousin Pat obviously shaken. In fact, he hasn't surfed north or North of Pescadero since...S.
the pumphouse at Linda Mar is part of my grand scheme to take over all bay area surf breaks. If you've touched the water at Linda Mar you've been infected with a slowly mutating genetic virus that will rob you of the will to surf.. leaving all the waves to me!! the Toxic Avenger!!! Har HA Harr!!!
Posted by: toxic avenger at June 15, 2004 01:05 PMi always thought the most serious toxins at lindy were found in the kitchen of taco smell...maybe you guys just happened to walk by when they were flushing out the ground meat tanks?
Posted by: luke at June 15, 2004 01:17 PMThe City of Pacifica as a result of years of corruption and croniesm (as well as inbreeding)was/is broke and in debt. So the sewage treatment plant couldn't handle the big rains and it was a multi million dollar problem (as is the decaying pier)that they could not pay for. So as a strategy they prayed the rains would not be too big too often. They hoped that they would ony release the raw sewage only a few times a year and pay the state the $50,000 fine. (Like General Motor's betting that over the life of a car x # of them would blow up and they would be liable for x # of $'s per lawsuit. Measure that against the price of a recall and you get "cost of doing business" Tobacco companies have a similar formula.
This new state/federal grant that has lead to construction to restore the area to it's predevelopment state will fix the problem.
However.....many of the homes up in Linda Mar Valley that were built in the 50's and 60's and 70's have leaking septic tanks. Of course some may not even have a tank since it probably was cheaper to bribe an inspector in 1965. So the human waste sits in the ground and seeps in to the water table and trickles on out at the boat docks area at the mouth of the creek. This is the source of the ongoing pollution.
The pumphouse for the most part is runoff from the street. That's why you see dead birds and oil and cans and shit in there. And it doesn't get opened too much. The treatment center is over near Sharp Park. The pump at the bottom of Linda Mar valley was not strong enough to push the sewage over the Rockaway and Lindy Hills under heavy rains and would get backed up.
The money they had to study the creek finds the creek water to be clean at the top of the hill where it starts. (Not sure how much that cost) but now the task is to inspect every home and see who's leaking and polluting and force them to fix it. But of course there is no money for this exercise and the homeowners claim they don't have the money and of course that it isn't them.
So in Pacifica when it's blowy and small and crumbly and closed out and someone says this is shit he's right. No matter how much you tell him that it was worth it to "get wet".
Surfing Linda Mar is how sober people get shitfaced these days.
It's not actually baby ruth's floating out there but it's bacteria and probably flecks of shit.
So when you burn someone and he tell's you to eat shit just ask him if it's o.k. to just drink it instead. If he agrees, then tell him it's all good and you want credit for time served.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot how the Pistons had the 2nd pick in the NBA draft last year and traded for Rasheed Wallace 2/3 of the way through the season. Oh wait, what about Larry Brown? Love the guy but how much did you have to throw his way to sign him? So who is the evil empire now? This is all not to mention how Orlando gave you their franchise for a guy with a busted ankle.
If you have something to say about hoops, you better know your shit. Besides, I highly doubt there are many real Pistons fans out there on this here board anyway. They all converted to the Bulls once MJ swept the floor with their jocks!

Posted by: New Zealand Swell at June 15, 2004 03:37 PMi heard some smack talk about shaq earlier and i just wanted to chime in. i don't give a shit if you don't like the rest of the lakers, they're all either over-the-hill, scrubs, overpayed role-players, or arrogant rapists. but shaq is the fucking man. of course he's been hyped up too much in the past, but you can't look past the effort this guy puts out in big games. sometimes he seems to dissappear in games but that's only because his teammates are too stupid to get him the ball (except for walton he knows whatsup). what other 350lb human being has the agility to play 45 minutes of a basketball game getting hung on all night by 2 or 3 younger more athletic bodies. no one. he has a freak of nature body with a heart to match. he's the only guy on this team i'm convinced really cares about this championship. no he can't make a shot outside of 5 feet and no he can't make a free throw, but his desire to win is something you don't find in many big men.
plus he's the funniest motherfucker to ever play the game.

Posted by: steama at June 15, 2004 04:02 PMTime difference means kickoff is 12:30am Saturday. I guess they'll replay it but I don't know when. Bloody marvellous to give the poms a hiding, Graham Henry has made a huge difference to the AB's, he's hard as nails and doesn't take any of that 'superstar' crap from the players. We've still got a ways to go to get back to where we should be, but if we trounce them this Saturday it'll put us in good stead for retaining the Tri Nations again.
Posted by: New Zealand Swell at June 15, 2004 04:07 PMYou can get the rugby on Fox Sports World, but of course you have to pay for 150 channels of expensive rubbish first..

Posted by: kahuna at June 15, 2004 04:08 PMShaq gets hit and hung on a lot, but every time down the court he either commits an offensive foul, or walks.
It's funny how many people think that Shack's teammates just forget or just choose not to pass the ball to him. Like it has nothing to do with how the Pistons are playing defense on both him and the passers.
Posted by: Friend #1 at June 15, 2004 04:09 PMI know this is off topic but did anyone catch that hightide sesh at londonesia last night? Pretty impressive for this time of year. Dropped a little this morning but not too shabby.
Posted by: V70T5 at June 15, 2004 04:18 PMcontinue on with b-ball talk
Kilowatt also is showing the game, and the crowd there is usually Pistons fans.
Posted by: at June 15, 2004 04:24 PMNew Zealand Swell...thanks for the 411. i hear ya on the 150 channels of shiet! that's what sux about cable and why i (i hope you're all sitting down) don't have it! i wish i could simply look at the 200 selections, choose my 5 and receive just those channels. hell!...i'd prolly even pay as much as a "normal" subscription just to avoid having all of that mind-numbing distracting trash!
as for Tri Nations...while i love to see the ABs de-pants the Poms...if they're playing the 'boks you and i are on opposite sides of the pitch! ; )
Posted by: ck at June 15, 2004 04:27 PMit does have something to do with how they're guarding the passers (very well), but not how they're guarding shaq. other teams do a much better job at that than the pistons, look at his stats from the other night (36 and 20 i believe) and consider he hardly touched the ball in the second quarter.
basically you can't really stop shaq one-on-one (unless he's having a horrible night), you have to double-team and foul him to stop him. when teams double him that's usually when kobe is able to get free and score some points. the pistons have chosen not to double shaq and therefore kobe can't get free. so basically the only way the lakers are gonna win is if they give shaq the fucking ball all night long until the pistons have to double team him, and then kobe can start getting loose from t prince and his fucking 7 foot wingspan.
kobe ain't jordan. he's proven it this series, unless he somehow pulls off some serious miracles in the next (hopefully) three games).
Posted by: superman at June 15, 2004 04:28 PMMy last b-ball rant:
My J is better then my surfing. But that doesn't say much.
Shaq - Baddest mother in the league hands down. Freak of an athlete at that size with agility to boot. No center in history has his combo. Sure, Wilt was the man. So was Kareem, Olajuwon, Russell, etc. Shaq is bigger, stronger, quicker but he still can't hit a free throw.
As for the Lake Show, they don't display heart like other teams do. But I guess you would get complacent as well if you won 3 titles in a row without much of challenge. Ask Kelly Slater how he felt. MJ had to go off and play basketball. Slater played golf.
Karl and Gary were great. They are not what they used to be. The East is not great. Indiana, Detroit and NJ are all they got. Top to bottom, the West is far better. If the Lakers had a power forward to even defend and help Shaq, this series would be over tonight with Kobe and Shaq winning #4. But, that is not the case and Chancey "Who???" Billups could be your MVP. Nice work D-Town. Can't wait to watch it burn down if the Pistons win. Best thing that could happen to Detroit since the race riots.
Surf - The rest of the week, its on!
Posted by: Kaiser at June 15, 2004 04:30 PMHoly shit, i have a old friend who is staring in THE NORTH SHORE! i just saw a web-promo, and there he is "this is jason mamoa, i'm in the north shore blah blah blah". He was a climbing partner of mine from years past, and he was an actor then (Bay Watch Hawaii, oh yes...). He plays "Frankie Sean" according to the website bio. Big, rasta-looking dude. He is the only rasta in hollywood, i think.
thats a trip. I haven't seen the guy in a few years. Kaiser- or anyone else who watches it- I want a report! hell, i want cable.
Posted by: luke at June 15, 2004 04:53 PMI'm with superman...they needa get the ball to Shaq tonight
Posted by: old man at June 15, 2004 04:54 PMmy J is better than your J cuz i am J beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyatch!!!!!
Posted by: j at June 15, 2004 04:58 PMe/ck -- Yeah, our friend got married to an ex-stripper in Vegas. A couple of her stripper friends showed up but they weren't really remarkable. We did, however, make a trip to Olympic Gardens. A big drunk group of us hit the Gardens after a night at the Hard Rock. There were a few girls in the group including my girlfriend. She got a ton of attention from the "entertainers" which was nice. We somehow lost Lerm and E's old roomie Paul there. Not a bad place for them to get lost...
Me, Lerm, and Paul played in a big no-limit hold'em tournament on Sunday night and I made it to the final table. Psyched....
Posted by: mwsf at June 15, 2004 05:04 PMThat's pretty cool, luke. In the two minutes I watched the North Shore last night, I saw your old friend. Unfortunately, two minutes was all I could stomach. The show is really bad...
Posted by: mwsf at June 15, 2004 05:06 PMck if it's a game between SA and NZ it's real rugby and everyone wins. Kiwis still have more respect for the Bok's than any other team, 'cause it's their national sport too(and we know it's reciprocated). A Bok forward pack strikes fear into any man and provides a lot of post game work for the doc's and physio's!
Posted by: New Zealand Swell at June 15, 2004 05:14 PMmwsf....sweet update! i look forward to hearing more from Lerm about his time in missing. congrats on the tournament results! that must have had ya soooo stoked!
Posted by: ck at June 15, 2004 05:16 PMNZS...how gentlemanly of ya! i couldn't agree with you more...about the impact of a pack of 'bok forwards, of course, but also about everyone winning when it's a game between SA and NZ. also, i gotta say that the ABs are a frickin' intimidating lot! would be cool to link up to watch a match some time.
ahhh...rugby....it truly lives up to its billing: a game for barbarians played by gentlemen. hmmm....could ruggers be niceness in disguise?
oh...i'm sorry...i think the rest of you were talking about b-ball? as is now painfully clear to all of you...i know nothing about b-ball. i just cheer with my friends. to that end....GO LAKERS! ; )

Posted by: gvibe at June 15, 2004 06:20 PMdamn, it's hot in herrre. can't stop pittin out and i'm just chillin on the couch. WTF?
Posted by: j at June 15, 2004 06:41 PMhey ho, did anyone catch the OB cleanup before the onshores got on it? Damn I figured there'd be at least a couple folks who were heh-heh-heh. I'm taking my chances on the negative manana cause its the only chance I got. As for b-ball, the pissed-ons are ready to flow. Should be role models for every team that doesn't have "superstars" with non-existent team credo. Maybe even the Giants if they figure out how to avoid double plays and Nen goes on a mysto surf holiday and comes back with gorilla arms. hasta
Posted by: banjo at June 15, 2004 07:37 PMIt's late and you guys are starving for good surf. Why else would you be talking b-ball? This is scary for me because I could care less about organized sports.
OK, I'm going to mess with your heads. It's December 17th, 2003. I take a long lunch break from work. If I had known, I would have taken the entire day off. There are only a few hundred guys in the world who could charge big OB on this day. Some of them post on this blog.
Shaq would drown and you would be complaining about the cold water while you spent an hour to paddle out back.
Me? I know who the real athletes are.
