Looked out my window today at OB and it couldnt be worse than the 7th sequel of a B-Movie slasher flick, only without the happy ending.

warm balmy weather upon 6am wakeup.
gettin' just a little pumped..
Flags signalling faint offshore flow.
yup yup..
Total, utter, uber-glass stretching out to the horizon.
seein is believin
VFers dealing in minutia.. biggest waves maybe waist high.
go south... aww yeah..
Middle of the beach bigger.
it's on! and on and on and on
Some waves heaving and throwing bulbous, transparent, playful lips.
swing yo booty ovah here.. swang yo booty ovah there..
Sloat looking enjoyable too. Super glass but maybe backing off a bit.
Surfed the middle with Christian and others.
Caught maybe 20 rides in almost 2 hours.
Raced along some canvas-like rights.
Tucked into a few yawning/pitching lefts.
Watched Christian pump and then careen off the lip a few times.
Discussed Bruce Irons getting beat-up in the maldives.
Smiled and gave thanks for the mellow, high-performance, plate-glass conditions.
Sunlight shimmering off impeccable, crystalline waves..
Pelicans, seals, jellyfish, crabs, bodysurfers.
minimal duckdiving..
MINIMAL DUCKDIVING!!!!!!!!

i think we got those conditions for a few weeks back in March and April, so now we're payin' the price.

OB: silently weeping over here.

But....bring on those raging onshores, I say! Bring on the stinking jellies, hypothermic water, peakless 2 foot closeouts, skunking windblown paddle-outs, unrideable crossed up whitewash, and lurking sharks. Bring it on! Before long I'll deteriorate into hallucinatory bliss and I. Will. Paddle. Out. And have fun in spite of the sheer ridiculousness of it all. I defy you, crappy conditions!

Spent the last few days in Indianapolis watching tiny foiled cars with big engines go really fast. No matter how flat, foggy, and windy it is...we have it good. (although firefly's are really cool)
Stayed with gracious Indy locals, many spoke of a single day at the beach or skiing in Tahoe telling me it was one of the greatest expereinces of thier life........A single day propelling many years of stoke in a humans life. We are blessed daily with fun hog options. Pack your trash, smile, be thankfull that even on the flat foggy days we have hills to carve on skates or bikes.

I had full intentions of hitting the surf break commonly referred to as "The $$$$$" this morning but I couldn't mojo. I thought I might see our friend, Mr. Pimp, at this specific locale. But, I opted to come to work instead. Good thing too as one of the Niceness scouts was on his coastal assult mission shortly after dawn and he reported typical SCHWAG conditions. What else would you expect?

i shaped AND glassed that board myself....not a bad first attempt...unfortunately that wave closed out on gumby, he tumbled over the falls and hit his head on the keyboard reef and buckled the board...i told him to get a heavier glass job...

When I was going to CCSF, some guy walked around with a flat dread that stuck out of the side of his head like a big meat cleaver. It would be interesting to read some peoples thoughts to understand what they are thinking about and how they perceive their 'oddities'. I wish I could get into my own head to figure out what I'm thinking about too.

calling mag bay guaranteed perfection is really pushing it, on both the perfection and guarantee aspects.

I was there in prime south swell season and we got all but completely skunked. And the right points are definitely B grade at best, especially compared to indo. Also an extremely windy place on this planet. But it is a shorter plane flight, you got that right.

i wish it was june of last year right now.

well, some day soon, waves will come. or maybe this is OB's way of extended crowd control. crappy shite waves for months on end, everyone moves away... then some months down the road, it gets perfect, global warming 82º water, pointbreak like sandbars, and desolate beaches ruled by no one and big bonfires all evening long. little crits lending their boards to the old drunk surfers... saying "matt johnson, on my board, MATT JOHNSON on MY board!!!" bull fights, no such thing as CAT6 data cable or keyboards. hmmm...... maybe summer time is the time just to kick back and imagine.

bummed to report that Joe O's tale of getting thiefed while out at Linda Mar is an exact replica of the heist that struck me back in january.

parked at community center lot. was casual with key placement. when i returned to the car, my keys were gone. took me a couple hours to finally get back to car with spare set of keys. once inside, i found that my keys were actually locked in the car... but my wallet was gone. by the time i made it home to cancel my cards, the scumbags had already gone to town (first at REI, then to Macy's for a series of $300 gift cards).

filed report with pacifica police, but they had a can't-really-do-anything attitude.

tom's suggestion yesterday of canceling macy's gift cards was a great one - wish i had thought of it.

in the end, i really didn't lose anything but time (money was refunded). however, the whole thing leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

and clearly, the same gang seems to be turning this trick on a fairly regular basis.

i dream of a stake out. pretty much holing up in the new pacific resort hotel and waiting for these fools to strike again. and then, boom!!! a full-on, lesson-teaching smackdown!!

If you're not asleep yet, another silly story. Got an email from an editor for a weekly rag in British Columbia who wanted to use a few of my pics for an article on older surfers. Out of the hundreds of shots he choses two of my friend Marty. We actually call him Discount Denny because he just qualified for senior discount at Denny's (55). Turns out the photos weren't even taken by me. But "DD" will be on the cover of the newspaper in an article called "Silver Soldiers." Is that sufficiently corny? But my buddy can still rip. Hey, he's riding Rich's board from the previous photo. Weird.

it seems that surfing is one sport where you can still perform at high levels as you get older. It's not that physically jarring on the body. It takes loads of experience, knowledge, humility and patience to excell. The movements are generally fluid and graceful. The beat-downs are generally mellow compared to skating or snowboarding or basketball.

1) Two surfboards will be accepted in lieu of the second piece baggage allowance, however, there will be additional cost.

2) Two surfboards will be permitted in one bag. The cost will be $25 per surfboard. No clothes or other items will be allowed in the bag with the surfboards.

3) Additional surfboards will be considered excess baggage at $100 per piece, and will travel as "cargo bag" to arrive at destination 5 days after the passenger's departure.

Hey kids, confirming existence of rideable heck-at-least-they're somethings, and sighted in more than one location. NEW DANGER: beware ending up in vacation photos! By this time August my kooky butt will apparantly be infamous in Chicago. Glory.

damn, we can't seem to catch a break here in the bay area. in case you were planning escapes down south, you might wanna think twice about flying TACA. They're now charging $25 per board, even if you've got 2 boards in one bag. No clothes or other items will be allowed in the bag with the surfboards! Any additional boards get charged at $100 a pop and get shipped cargo, arriving 5 days later.

mjs- I assume a rack for surfboards? I found a pretty slick approach. Get some 24" threaded galvanized pipe. They also make round flanges that secure to a post or wall that have threaded heads into which the pipe screws. Buy the black foam pipe insulation that comes in six foot lengths for custom padding. You're done. Only cautionary note is to secure the flanges well with small lags, preferably into double studs. My old garage had 6X6 posts that worked perfect. Coincidently there's a picture of this approach on the Surf Shrink page (surfing addiction article). These racks have held up very well for me, and I use the bottom one for repairs.

About Taca policy: at least this new policy is better than my friend's experience at the end of this May: he was charged $100 extra for 2nd board in one board bag= $125 total for two boards. Ouch! Just tell them you have only one board. They will not look inside as long as it's not too heavy.

Loon, I'm in SC. I did a kelpy cove a poor woodworker's handful of miles north of town, and got a couple of weak rides this morning as the only taker apart from seals (thanks to some great advice from here; it was the only ridable spot I saw). The waves breaking on the beach in Aptos seem bigger this afternoon than yesterday, though, so maybe we're on an upward trend. Mild wind, too. Mag Bay? She'll get some sweet ones, maybe. More than likely She'll get to meet the nasty no-see-um flies and other transplant locals! Glad you got some. A friend and I paddled out there one day when it was big and were surprised to find only a few peeps out. . . even some of them left after a while. We couldn't quite figure it out until a DOH sneaker set rolled in and left us scratching for the horizon. It can hold a real big swell but you don't want to be sitting inside on the reef when the macazoids hit.
