looked horrible.. but..
Our beloved beach breaks looked sub par while driving by in the car. They looked even worse when standing outside the car in the chilly onshore wind. They looked borderline atrocious when compared to the tasty, guilty pleasure of a warm donut or two that might be ingested if surfing were skipped. But, alas, thanks in part to CK’s “just get wet” attitude, Kaiser, CK and I ventured out into what looked like comically lackluster conditions. To my pleasant surprise, however, a steady stream of waist/chest high waves pulsed in and provided enjoyable rides. Nothing outstanding. Nothing super fast or long. But enough to get some drops and generally work on your game and paddle around in the Pacific and feel the therapeutic cleansing power of mama ocean. For the most part the waves would peak and then crumble, generally not closing-out. Mid OB looked somewhat attractive, with a few semi-sculpted faces and a little more size than the rest.
It’s out there.

Posted by: nemo at June 23, 2004 10:25 AMwell done on making it out this morning gents. i checked the cams & buoys at 5:40 but the fog and generally gray conditions was enough to send me back to bed. hope the sw holds til tomorrow -- all work and no surf makes homer something something ...
Posted by: loon at June 23, 2004 10:44 AMahhh...yes....the therapeutic cleansing (to the soul...likely not to the body) power of mama ocean. well said, e and good sharing the water with you and kaiser. i just couldn't bear going into werk early so a little pre-work seshie seemed the way to start the day.
hey, V7OT5...did you do the 100 mtb? how was it? epic, i trust. as for me, i couldn't score the day off (at least that's my excuse...the fact that it was a 22-hour ride didn't scare me off at all. honest. ; ).
Posted by: ck at June 23, 2004 10:52 AMis the wind supposed to back off more tomorrow?
Posted by: hopeful at June 23, 2004 10:52 AMOB: What e said. But as the tide fills in, a longboard and windbreaker might be your best bet.
Gumby! "Mas [ student term] Gumby" was my nickname when I took martial arts off and on for 2 years. Total beginner stuff, but a ton of emphasis on falling and getting thrown. Because I was just their relatively flexible "Mas Gumby", the edgiest student instructer decided I was his favorite demo attacker. He'd slam me hard to the ground and then other students lined up to take their turn. Not something I appreciated at the time. Moved here, and paddled out into ob and had flashbacks to those old classes! ...I swear if I hadn't been hurled into the ground hundreds of times I'd never have paddled out so soon or so often around here. Who knew such destruction was great training for surfing? Love the turnaround on that one...Okay end of happy gumby story. Moral: yeah keep stretching, it might not help your surfing but sure increases your tolerance for beatings , hahaha! Cheers,

Tour De La Marin was an epic. On the trails at 4:20 am and back at the car by 1 am the next morning. It hurt but sampled some of marin's finest singletrack. Next de la in winter soltist-ball buster (never done the winter ride)
Anyone catch lindonisia last night?-not too shaby.

Posted by: slack jawed at June 23, 2004 12:02 PMA popular place in SC was---popular mid-morning. Really long period 2-3ft swell on pure, windless glass. Sometimes you'd wait two minutes between waves, and then you'd see a glimmer of a ripple tease out o'er the kelpy plain. At 9:30 there were few enough takers that I could grab a wave pleasantly often, but by 10:30 it'd gotten crowded enough with few enough waves that it was more an exercise in social skills than surfing. Early on I caught two really nice, clean, peeling rights that let me zip along the face and wiggle back and forth a couple of times. I could get used to that! Two more days in SC; thinking dawn patrol tomorrow . . .
Posted by: Klooless Kook at June 23, 2004 12:06 PMwhich would you prefer:
- 2 hour drive each way. glassy point break with small 3 wave sets every 10 minutes, otherwise flat. 20 or 30 people in the lineup. You get 8 waves in 1.5 hours, 2 nice clean rides with a few turns. at one point some grom yells at you and you watch a ton of awesome waves get ridden by surfers higher up on the pecking order.
or
- 15 minute drive each way. Scrappy, disorganized windswell. tons of waves, but not much shape. 5 or 10 people scattered throughout the mile-long beach. You get 20 waves in 1.5 hours, 4 or 5 solid rides that allow for a move off-the-closeout or a fun turn or something, but nothing epic.
Posted by: e at June 23, 2004 12:30 PMTC is my absolute favorite surfer, hands down. He elevates the cutback to an art form. Whenever i make a big driveway carve on a skateboard, i'm always trying to emulate his style. (whenver i make- try to make- a turn like that on a wave, i'm always thinking about not falling off. i still usually fall off. gee, if the wave would just stand still like that driveway...)

Posted by: at June 23, 2004 12:55 PMhmmm....good question. in general, i'd go with option 2, but every now and again option 1 has to go down. it's just soooo good to get extendo face-time periodically to have more time to think about feet positioning, take increasingly aggressive lines up the face from successive bottom turns, etc.
Posted by: ck at June 23, 2004 12:56 PMHey what's the scoop on the shark sighting at ob last weekend? Is'nt there a big net stretched out from S.F. to Pacifica? How in the hell did that shark slip through? I want Fing ANSWERS!!!!!
Posted by: todular at June 23, 2004 01:02 PMbtw...V7OT5...sounds sic! nice work completing what sounds like an absolute grueling ride! maybe next year i, too, will step up to the plate! maybe. ; )
Posted by: ck at June 23, 2004 01:10 PMArtificial Reefs might attract more sharks. Although i dont think anyone would mind a local snapper rocks Superbank off sutro or funston. As for the shark nets, no objection here.
Posted by: MavzPeak99 at June 23, 2004 01:14 PMOption #2. only 15 minute drive.
We are supposed to not be burning oil, right?
Posted by: jb at June 23, 2004 01:24 PMLet's not be hypocritical, y'all.
Regarding the Artificial Reefs and Oil, I'll never forget seeing Chevrons "People Do" ad campaighn highlighting thier recycling of thier underground storage tanks into artficial reefs. The irony off it all.

Posted by: j at June 23, 2004 01:56 PMConsidering the driving vs. stay at home debate, even if 30 artificial reefs/pointbreaks were successfully built near us with the shark nets i fear we would see Santa Cruz North materialize. So in a way its better we only have mediocre surf spots and just a handful of them. Count your blesings peeps!

Posted by: Bruce at June 23, 2004 04:02 PMAN UPPER LEVEL LOW NEAR 41N 140W WILL DRIFT EASTWARD...APPROACHING THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST BY LATE IN THE WEEKEND. THIS UPPER LOW IS WEAKENING THE SUBTROPICAL HIGH OFF THE CALIFORNIA COAST...IN TURN EASING THE NW FLOW ACROSS THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COASTAL WATERS.
Looks like the winds are to lighten up a bit but not that much. Calling for NW winds 10-20 mph today and tonight.
Sunday/Monday look BAD for winds. Calling for gale force winds up to 40 kts.
Swell:
Morro Bay bouys are starting to show some south swell readings. Santa Barbara is not but that might be Channel Islands related. Pt Conception as been showing since 5 a.m. today and is currently reading 4.3 ft @ 17. Can't remember the Monterey Bouy number so I have null data there.
That is all I know. Plan accordingly.
