a little sesh

found a few waves this morning.
dainty little micro-peelers stoked me out.
older hooded long-boarder followed me around the lineup.
paddled back and forth in an attempt to shake him.
tried to clear my mind of inter-human anxieties.
Paddle away from said dude and interact with the waves, in and of themselves.
A frugal smattering of peaky somethings came to pass.
Slower, trim-happy rides.
Good-vibed friday energy.
Skin-warming California sunshine.
OB looking fugly.
4ft 14 south swell from around 190 showing on the outer buoys (not showing on the SF buoy)
Most likely a few good waves in Santa Crowded this weekend.

I was at the 12am showing of Fahrenheit 9/11 at the IMax on Mission. There were six movies showing around midnight, all sold old. We need that idiot out of office, today. Bush sucks.

I'll be headed down to Cabo and then up to Todos Santos with my girlfriend in late July. Anyone have any recommendations on cheap lodging in town? Not looking for anything too cush, just comfortable. This is my first trip down there. Any general words of wisdom? Thanks ahead of time!

Posted by: DAK at June 25, 2004 11:01 AM

Yo DAK,
are you driving? If so there are some other spots that you should hit. Can't help if your flying...only done the drive down there

Posted by: V70T5 at June 25, 2004 11:03 AM

maybe we should all move to florida for the fall and campaign for kerry(the other guy). if we could convince every surfer in fla to vote for kerry, maybe we could give the state to the d's. and the surf fires at sebastian and spanish house in the fall/hurricane season.

V70T5 - I'll be flying down to Cabo then driving up to Todos Santos - someday I hope to do the drive over a few weeks.

Posted by: DAK at June 25, 2004 11:35 AM

This weekend? Just as I leave Santa Crowded for SF. Inconsistent and mostly weak this morning, but not as Santa Crowded as the last couple of days. Great animal watching, though: seals, dolphins, and sea otters, one of the latter on its back working at something while paddling in a circle around me just a few feet away. All somehow enjoyed without the Theme from Jaws playing in my head.

Posted by: Klooless Kook at June 25, 2004 11:35 AM

gvibe - search online for surf shops in oregon/washington. they're probably still clearing out last years 6/5/4's - i don't think you can find many that thick locally.

Posted by: j at June 25, 2004 11:52 AM

V70T5: i'm starting a drive down the penninsula at the end of next week. hoping to explore further than i ever have. i am having a hard time finding information about realistic driving times. (being on the road in baja at night is not part of this girl's surf travel fantasy.)wondering if you or some other baja expert might help on this or any other trip tip. about how long would it take to get from colonet to san ignacio? if you have a secret tip for me you can e-mail me: steamwand89@yahoo.com.

Posted by: steamwand at June 25, 2004 12:04 PM

I ran into some SC guys while in Cabo last year who made the drive in 24 hours (they drove at night too).

In Cabo there is a cool place to stay right next to/in front of Zippers. The thing that sucks about Cabo is that you really need to rent a car in order to check out all the breaks. The surf shop in front of zippers has a sweet map for free. I think it is also online somewhere. If I were to go again, I would rent a car and drive up to the spot near Todos Santos and camp for a couple days.

Posted by: traut at June 25, 2004 12:40 PM

DAK,

My brother and I did the same trip last year about this time. There's a place right on the beach between Cerritos and Todos Santos called Pescadero RV park (or some such). They have palapa tent sites for something like 5 bucks a person and a few "air conditioned" cement block bunker rooms as well. Flush toilets, showers, little bar and grill. It sits on the north end of a long beach which can be decent. Cerritos just down the road and plenty of other spots for the looking. We had a great time.

A little further south in the town of Cerritos there's the Pescadero surf camp which is a little nicer (and has a small swimming pool) but is well away from the beach.

In todos santos don't miss the Tres Hermanos taco stand for the best fish tacos or Taco Chilakos for carne asada (get the mixtos) tacos.

Watch out for las aguas malas, they suck if you're allergic to jellyfish...

Forced myself to paddle out today- had to have a fix. Didn't go south 'cause of the low tide, surfed 1-2' vfs by myself. So poor...but hell, at least I got in! First surf in 10 days. Leaving for baja in 2 weeks!!!

Posted by: luke at June 25, 2004 01:24 PM

Bruce...while your lady may have been limited by her equipment...her timing is dead-on! nice shot! (i guess photog skillz run in the fam?) have a great weekend down south.

Posted by: ck at June 25, 2004 01:41 PM

First off, the beach looks terrible right now. I always love the Friday Afterwork Special but not today! Brown turdy water, little waves, lots of wind..... You know the drill!

Gotta say thanks to Alex Martins for taking care of my little one! Did a great job.

Christian, if you read this, nice catching up with ya! Love the pad and I can't wait to come hang out for a BBQ with the mean grill!

Bait - Happy B-Day.

DAK,

That's a trip I'd like to take too.
Read up on Bluebottle Jellyfish, a relative of the Portugese Man-o-War. They are all over the warmer pacific waters including Hawaii. Dogman just published a letter in Pacific Waverider from a Santa Cruz surfer that was stung last year.

I searched on the internet for "Bluebottle Jellyfish" to get the skinny. The treatment is different for this guy than other jellyfish stings and it's best to know what to do if stung.

Bottom line-if stung, get to the beach immediately. Use a stick or clamshell or anything other than your bare hand to scrape off any Jellyfish parts attached to your skin. Then ice it. Do not use alcohol or amonia or anything else on these stings cuz it make the toxin release faster, which is not a good thing. The article has the name of a doctor down there that's supposed to be pretty good about that stuff.

The RV park by Playa Cerritos got washed out during a hurrcane last summer. In October it was a couple of guys selling weed and begging for dollars to feed thier dog. You can always camp at Cerritos.

This book is helpful

hrothbart, Dennis & 3to5setof7 - hey thanks guys (or gals - just in case) I really appreciate the feedback. Wasn't really thinking of the jellies - but certainly something to be ready for just in case. I've got that Baja book as well. I'd like to stay as close to the beach as possible. I have heard that the RV park got deuched last year. Can't wait to check out these fish tacos, get some sun/heat and just vege and play in the water!

DAK if you get a good southern hemi or an early season 'cane or even a chubby (chubasco).... the last place your gonna want to be is over there at todos santos area. that area is better on the Norths and yeah there will be waves but why hang there when you are in S swell season and there may be waves of your life just an hour away?

i personally have seen it 8+ and closed out on a 'cane. (hurricane blas in 1998) nobody out.

you'll see as soon as you get there why as the topography clearly shows it's N favoring setup.

head up the east cape.....it's a submarine tunnel offshore and you could sometimes find more size up there than even in "town" especially on a dead south (which is usually the case for chubbies and canes.

the southern hemi stuff usually is more sw....i know this because in 1998 i surfed both B named hurricans...Blas in Cabo and Bonnie in Lido Beach Strong Isle New York

While I am wonderful and know pretty much everything there is to know about everything......maybe i'm thinking of a different spot but the famous one with the cobblestones and palapas and the RV park and the big sign over the dusty road is the one i'm talking about

hrothbart did you get a storm or sw? and if so did your swell have better shape than Blas did there? it didn't have any pt break shape during blas....just big dumpy close outs...

i turned and drove away and killed it with mike doyle....yeah the 1970 world surfing champ for a couple hours....he was riding a tandem board and doing handstands......in the rolly soft 8+ waves

Posted by: tom at June 25, 2004 03:14 PM

He gets that natural wave-picking ability from his father.

Posted by: Klooless Kook at June 25, 2004 03:25 PM

he's already charging.....he's gonna be late on this?

did he make it?

Posted by: at June 25, 2004 03:27 PM

i love how he's eyeing the wave

Posted by: steamwand at June 25, 2004 03:46 PM

Late on a close-out, just like pops . . . except he doesn't seem to have dropped in on anyone else!

Posted by: Klooless Kook at June 25, 2004 04:00 PM

Wind continuing to pick up along the great highway.

Posted by: at June 25, 2004 04:03 PM

tom, i surfed out in front of doyle's gallery one day last fall during a late se swell. he was riding this longboard that looked like a standard issue 6'4" thruster shaped from a sailboard blank. he was ripping down the line and gouging some nice cutty's. looked like a good alternative to the tradtional LB. hmmmmm.

At least until my broken toe heals. I'm going camping in SoCal next weekend but it doesn't look like much is happening on the radar screen. I just got a new surfboard!

southern baja

i passed through the todos santos area in january and they were rebuilding the rv park that got obliterated, so it might be habitable by now. also, i can confirm the ~24 hours driving time from cabo to sc, non-stop. did it in '90 when the roads were a bit worse -- four guys in a vw microbus taking shifts.

kudos to limevoodoo and others the finnegan articles. best read i've had in a long time.

I'm thinking about a new page on my site for Gumby's Photos. Send your contributions to my email address. Each contributor will receive a new home on the West Side of SC along with a personal surf instructor (me) to assist you in looking kooky. Oh, I forgot. just back from Baja (Cabo) and i have to recommend it to all, even thou you do need a rental car to check it all. Just un freakin real the whole time. Sunny warm mellow water, always a few nice nuggets to have. I must admit being unused to such carefree conditions. Not to mention smiley faces in the water.Basically just the opposite of good ol NorCal. Shipwreaks, El Tule, and even crowded Zippers was enlightening. Just 2 hours away and as fun as Indo. And sure enough i ran into a few other sliders from our own neck of the woods.

this morning I made pancakes with blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and bananas for my girlfriend and me, then we drove to a beach where the wind was under 40mph sideshore and I scored slopile utility seshness. all good 'cept the wind picked my board up off the road when I was stripping off my wettie and slammed it into the bottom of my trailer hitch-- hello mr. dingfixer? then to top it off a wasp bit me under my shirt while driving home in my truck. hmmm. life is good.

Posted by: Bruce at June 26, 2004 10:08 PM

Tom,

We're talking about the same place. We arrived between two SW's and left just before the big hurricane. Yes, the RV park is much better situated for NW than S or SW. During the middle of the week we were there the only thing going was NW windswell so it was the place to be. We scooted back down to Cabo and out the east cape for the last day or two when a small SW rolled in.

If you're set up for camping and there's a good south swell the cape is great. Just keep driving east and you'll find nice uncrowded waves and great beach camping. Take a lot of water and your own shade.

We did get stopped out there by a Federale patrol looking for drugs. Six teenagers with M-16s. They were super cool though and didn't hassle us at all. Just asked us about our "vacaciones" and whether the "surfeando" was any good.

Posted by: hrothbart at June 26, 2004 10:33 PM

Bruce, shot me an email if you see this. I should be in the "area" by early morning Sunday.
