Deeez nutz! i just wanted to say that. But.. shit.. The good news; there is some swell in the water. The bad news; the onshores are going bananas. The SF buoy reads 4.9ft 15 seconds. Lerm and I surfed the beach all by our lonesome and it seemed like a sizeable, chunky set would venture in every 10 minutes or so. I’m guessing this was the 210 degree south reported by Blakestah? If the wind mellowed out some, the surf could be rather schweet. But.. the onshores are causing the waves to crumble and/or close-out. Some thump was in evidence this morning, as I got ragdolled and bullied by a few of the larger waves. It’s bigger than yesterday though not “big” by any means. Word on the street is that some san mateo county beaches were working yesterday afternoon.. and not the beach you’re thinking of. Some creative thinking, a bit of driving and a dash of luck might result in a quality session somewhere around here. Today could be a good day to take a chance.
Couple of announcements:

Tonight! Surf movie night!! Hosted by that chilled-out cat Bandini!
T H E B I G S W E L L
Coming July 7th is the SF premiere of THE BIG SWELL an
independent film about Mavericks, featuring Grant
Washburn, Randy Cone, and an insane surfing lawyer
among other SF area surfers!
The Big Swell tells the story of a giant winter swell
in the North Pacific, from its birth to its death
throes on California's shores.
Three big wave surfers and two elite forecasters share
the passion, fear and obsession that these huge waves
inspire. This film does a great job of mixing
big-wave action, local knowledge, and the science
behind swell forecasting.
Filmmaker Peck Euwer and surfer Grant Washburn will
present the film, and answer all your questions about
50 foot monster lumps, sharks and more!

Where's my board?????
I just wanted to say that...
Drove the beach this morning, thought about a few spots along the way as I haven't surf OB in a long time. Got to Slizz, saw Lerm. We were trying to gauge the wind. I threw my hat in the air and we deduced it was blowing S/SW or thereabouts. Soooo, what do I do when the winds blow S/SW? I drive the same way!
Found a nice litte spot to get some olas. Winds grooming the surface, tide fairly low but still doable. It is days like today that are great for when you don't like to surf with crowds. Whether it be the fog/wind/lack of swell/extra sleep or whatever your reasoning, people tend to stay away. Fine by me. The conditions weren't "great" or even "good" but still solid for July. Especially after the misery of May/June this year. Only a few heads out along OB and southward. I would guess-timate that I saw a total of 12-14 people in the water in total this morning.
I also got a few reps in on CK's CI single fin for the first time. Really sweet to ride something so smooth and so different. The "single fin" nature of the board was really evident as it just reeked of SOUL. Seems like you can't ride it any other way. Dorked what could have been the best wave of the day for me. Not the biggest but it lined up the best and threw out a nice shoulder. Paddled to the right spot, got to my feet great, set the rail and D-O-R-K-E-D! Not sure what happened there! Sometimes it just goes that way.....
After a glorious chocolate donut, my morning was fulfilled (w/ custard of course).
For those heading to the flick tonight, maybe a post movie-flick-beer-session?

Posted by: e at July 7, 2004 10:54 AMhelloooo niceness!! i'm in cali and loving it, especially yesterday's stellar glassiness. small swell + glass = small beautiful peaks. california is the headiest! from cute santa cruz girls who always capture a pizza my heart to the beautiful ocean fog misty green redwood forest hills of the coast... what a golden state. i only have until this weekend to enjoy the rich camraderie, sweet nugs, an old tubular friend of mine, and Mama Pacific... but it sure is great to be here. all I can say is Northern California IS Niceness. i'll be back for winter... One Love, see ya at OB.
Posted by: jocular jake at July 7, 2004 11:16 AMKaiser, is your south the same south as my south? I went 8:30-10:30 to the spot just a little bit south that I've had so much fun at the last two days, and it was crowded enough to seriously reduce waves and to make for hazards; no bad vibe at all, but just too many people and boards. Waves weren't as consistent as Monday, but bigger than yesterday; every few minutes a couple of really fun ones would roll in. I'm thinking of trying uber-dawn-patrol tomorrow to beat get more of these for myself. MINE! MINE! MINE!
Posted by: Klooless Kook at July 7, 2004 11:26 AMDamn. Fun waves down the coast last night. South San Mateo County was doing ok. The only thing better than the waves was my al pastor burrito afterwards at tres amigos. The only reason I am posting this is that I don't mind surfing with some heads down at those breaks because you don't want to be surfing a south San Mateo County break alone at dusk. Might check it out this evening.
Posted by: Rob Mojado at July 7, 2004 11:28 AMhello niceness. been out of the loop for a bits. jumping back in for a quick one.
here is a shot from the shack. bagel's sweet new ride.
getting stoked to get some water time in the next couple of days. i'm all withered up from lack of water. hopefully i'll see some of you out the water.
aight.
Posted by: elias at July 7, 2004 11:41 AMniceness to all.
damn you rob mojado.
Tres Amigos was too crowded at 9:30pm as is. I don't want to wait any longer for my burrito.
And enough about the sharky vibe factor, already. Being re-inserted into the food chain is one of the great gifts that goes along with surfing that stretch of coast.

Posted by: Yoda at July 7, 2004 11:52 AMOB: waist-head, steady onshores, and lumpy/gurgly waves if that makes any sense. Is that a little bit of south in the water? Very sloppy but a talented optimist who doesn't mind very bouncy little rides could find some workable shoulders.
Fun waves this am, but GEEZ it's tough to avoid all these projectile missles. Didn't really catch anything, this was the most flying objects I've ever dodged by a mile, it got really hairy! Really nice peeps though...funny combination. And there's the twist ; good waves plus more people = less rides and more surfboard lumps on the head, or much worse waves, ocean beatings, plenty of space? Hmmmm

Posted by: Yoda at July 7, 2004 12:18 PMbagel...looks like a sic ride!! you must be frothin'!
speakin' of fish...i enjoyed a few turns on Kaiser's sweet Coffey fish (thanx bro). it paddles so fine and is quick down the line -- which was helpful this morning given the scarcity of corners. after a few olas, i almost missed what turned out to be my wave of the day as we were swapping back. we're in the water, doing the leash hand-off and, sure 'nuff, here comes a tasty looking lump offering the potential for a smooth shoulder. i hastily slapped the leash on my ankle, turned, paddled, and slipped into a nice little frontside peeler that offered a high, fast, unbroken line to the inside. single-fin butter.
so...all-in-all...sorta marginal conditions on the grand scheme of things, but fine for July and a sweet morning in the water. wish i coulda stayed all day. damn werk.
Posted by: ck at July 7, 2004 12:19 PMToday's dumb story #1. Pal Vern is surfing a reefy spot north of SC and there's a spongie splashing around in a bright yellow wetsuit. He laughs and the guy asks what's so funny?
"Don't you know that this is I-5 for Whitey? You're splashing around ringing the dinner bell dressed in YUMMY yellow! You look like a giant friggin' fishing lure!"
Dumb Story #2. I'm surfing by myself at the north end of our favorite SW wind secret spot. A guy paddles out and I try to be clever. "Thanks, pal, you just reduced my chances of being lunch by 50%" "Naw," he says, "I only have to paddle faster than you, and you're OLD." (Ouch!)

Posted by: mwsf at July 7, 2004 04:23 PMThere IS a SW on the way. Tell whoever blew that forecast that Christmas Island registered a 230 degree swell two days ago.
There is a small window, from 227 to 232 degrees, in which a storm can send swell between New Zealand and Australia. This week, such a swell will hit our coasts, after close to 8000 miles of travel. I tracked it on QuikSCAT, but was not sure it would get to us until I saw it hit Christmas Island.
Most people miss swells through that window. I think last year there was one pretty good one from that window, and everyone (including me) scratched their heads and wondered where it was from. Well, fool me once, your fault. Fool me twice....
This one will not be a super swell, but it should be noticeable, and stronger than the one hitting now.
