Substitute Teacher Day
Yo, what up everyone? Kaiser back for a short update this morning.
I think our man E is feelin' ill today, probably getting his groove on or at least getting his snooze on. Not sure exactly of his whereabouts but figuring that the surf has been decent lately, the weather has been cooperative and its Friday, why not throw in an update... Rumor has it Jucular Jakester is rolling the coast hooking up his new foam/glass.
Got some decent ones myself out there this mo'oning but it wasn't nearly as good as last night's session. Pretty fun yesterday arvo as the size had increased a bit and the winds were a'ight. Shoulders are burning today after 6 sessions this week. Tired arms, tired arms!
So, here is what is going on out there today:
Swell: down a bit from yesterday as the windswell seems to be tapering off a bit. Rumor of some S swell coming. Don't expect much though.
Winds: Still looks like it is pretty gusty locally out of the SW or so. Supposed to change more northerly for the weekend. Keep an eye out.
Surf Breaks:
Pizza Point - 3-5 ft, semi-clean lines, 4 people burying a pep & shroom in the lot. Waves looking pretty round.
Donut Point - 3-4 ft, a bit smaller and slightly wabbly. A couple of logs out there, one old fashion dude.
Bucks Beach - 4-5 footers and really consistant. As usual, not totally EPIC but it will suffice. Pretty popular spot like usual so be patient as it is still serving it up.
Pescado Inlet - A bit smaller here, 2-3 ft but lots of activity. Semi-consistant lines. Winds not a factor but watch out if you paddle across the channel by the rocks.
Also, looks like Mr. Lane Lizard dropped an update on his glorious site last night. Some good shots from yesterday morning post sharing the lineup with him at "Closeout City".
last night was pretty sick. I almost forgot what the wind can do when it blows OFFshore. Is that the Kloo-stah in the last pic with the green rails?

Posted by: j at July 9, 2004 11:09 AMOB: not there, see below. But keep eyes on the wind, it was 3-6 foot this morning, a bit sloppy and windy but definitely appeared surfable...not too shabby.
Surfed Urgent Care point today! Arrived at a beach locale around 5:40, amping to get in the water and so psyched to be the first one there, wooee! Suited up, then noticed my finger was bent in a nasty direction. No idea exactly how that happened. Fiddled for 15 minutes but the darn thing wouldn't cooperate. Seriously debated whether surfing w/out gloves could have health benefits by "icing the injury." Made agonizingly responsible decision -arg - to see a doc , who says the tendon is totally broken and must splint the appendage 24/7 for 9 weeks! Fortunately this is my middle finger so I'll be a walking obscenity for 2 months. If anyone sees me in the water, please note that I am a friendly soul and am NOT flipping you the bird. Happy wave hunting, and forget sharks - watch out for those dangerous parking lots!
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at July 9, 2004 11:11 AMis evrybody still surfing? the north end of jardim do linda mar was mostly closeouts in the 3 foot range this morning before 8. plenty of people on it of course. Bruce's photos (i saw em last night) had me checking a nearby spot but the swell must be down or the tide was too high or something.
Posted by: eric at July 9, 2004 11:12 AMi'm sittin' here happy i got in the water this morning, but a bit disappointed as i had (for some reason) let my expectations rise and the conditions i found couldn't quite live up. still, there were some pick-and-choose corners/sections here and there. i committed the Cardinal sin of surfing and passed on what would have been my wave of the day (a rare shoulder-higher that actually peeled down the line) because i was convinced there was going to be something better behind it, but...no...it was one of those 1-wave sets. sigh...sometimes it doesn't pay to be an optimist! i also gotta come clean and admit that i totally spaced shortly after getting into the water and dropped in a leashless logger. i don't know what was with me. it was like i was still asleep. once i realized what i had done, i apologized and, surprise of surprises, the cat was TOTALLY cool about it. niceness spirit in the line-up. sweet! if you're the dude...sorry, once again. thanx for being chilly-chill.
e...where are u? hope you're not illin'.
Posted by: ck at July 9, 2004 11:13 AMs.s...ouch! sorry to hear 'bout the finger. hope it doesn't keep you outta the water for long.
marco and klooless...nice waves!
Posted by: ck at July 9, 2004 11:17 AMkaiserstah were ya out at the boat docks last night? we never saw you?

I wouldn't worry too much about e's health, I suspect he will bounce back before you know it...

Posted by: Manuel at July 9, 2004 11:55 AMPoor Sharky! Broke your finger AND I didn't get any pictures of you. That's OK, helps maintain your mysterious woman image. And with the splint, you'll have a ready response to bad pick up lines from crusty old surfers!!!
Heading south to hunt that elusive aquatic reptile, Lanecti Loto Lizardoso.
Posted by: Bruce at July 9, 2004 11:58 AMDamn, this site! I posted the update this morning but I can't see the updated site. Sooo, there maybe some peeps that can't see the report, might be a caching issue. Whatever.
Marco-Stah, nice shots.
Christian, that is indeed the man! And yes, from what I recall that is Werewolf Numbero Dos!
TomStah, yeah Boatdorks were blowing up! I charge. Ha, not really. I was just one peak over. I thought the left was good and it was occasionally but I think your "bowl" was serving the special ingredients. The posse inbetween seemed clueless. Not sure what the appeal to the "channel" was.
Bug, nice to see your alive!
Posted by: KaiserStah at July 9, 2004 11:59 AMHey, what is the domain URL you guys are accessing this site from?
A) http://www.niceness.org/new_surf/
or
b) http://www.niceness.org/surf/report.htm
Posted by: Kaiser at July 9, 2004 12:11 PMthe first URL is the one i'm using.
Posted by: ck at July 9, 2004 12:23 PMno problem seeing the site for me. and i've noticed that clicking preview seems to help with caching issues for me.
had a decent enough outing this morning in san mateo, though for most of the time it seemed there was too much tide or too little swell or maybe the bars are just not working. but it was inspiring just to see the spray flying off the tops of the peaks.
nw wind, thanks for the recent reprieve.
bruce - nice shots!
and kloo, i like the lines you took on those waves -- but i now suspect that you've been underselling your abilities!!
happy weekend peeps!
Posted by: loon at July 9, 2004 12:44 PMthat vid from yesterday is cool- i dig the air at the end. is that your editing B-stah? Too bad there's no footage from last night...I don;t think i;ve ever seen as many shortboards in the water at lindy than I did last night. that was kinda insane.
Posted by: luke at July 9, 2004 12:52 PMI'm going to make my first entry into the water in 5 weeks. I feel like my broken toe could stand another week or two but with duct tape and boots, I figure it should be OK. I just can't stands it no more-especially after getting skunked last weekend in SoCal.
Well the last time I was in the water, it was clear and blue and 78 degrees...

Posted by: shak at July 9, 2004 01:08 PMThe video at surfvid.com is shot and edited by Lloyd Pollock, a friend with more video knowledge and better equipment than me. He's helped my video skills quite a bit. He also does his own music. Although now a P-town resident, in his younger days he spent a decade on the front row, Great Highway, and before that grew up in Santa Cruz. He has cool Eastside footage from over 2 decades ago.
There's really very few pictures up today...

Dennis, welcome back to agua and welcome to day one of the duct tape surf club! Always kept tape in my car and now it's going to good use around this spiffy plastic finger splint. I hear duct tape not only speeds the healing process but it's also a shark repellent.

I was suspicious of that board of yours, as if I might have seen it on a web-site after it was made? Don't sweat the drop-in. A little acknowledgement goes a long way... As for the wave of the day, I passed on it too, thought you were going. There will be more.
And don't pigeon hole me as a logger. (kidding, really) My work doesn't allow me to get out too often in the am, but if you see me again on the beast, let's swap boards- your single looked fun, but if you don't occasionally get on a log, well.... The big red one was mad by Tyler of "Single Fin Yellow" fame and it is a super fun board, even in over head surf. I was a pain in the ass kid who thought that long boards were for geriatrics, and then I rode one, and it helped my surfing improve on top of being super fun. Weird, huh?
And Pez is back, I saw him in the water last night, relaxed, the trip was great and he is ready for another!

Posted by: cc at July 9, 2004 01:51 PMgoodmorning...given your cool response and general good-times vibe, i suspected that might have been a niceness head i dropped-in on today. once again, so sorry. i think i was still half-asleep and was too focused on what i was doing rather than what was going on around me (not that that's an excuse). as for that missed wave of the day...it was a sweet one. too bad neither of us snagged it. sorry if i contributed to you passing on it. the ironic things is that one of the reasons why i didn't go for it was the fact that i had just recently dropped-in on you. it sorta seemed like i needed to pay my penance by giving that to someone else (plus...i DID think there would be another behind it! ; ). i did see you score a nice peeling left as i glanced over my shoulder while driving up over the hill after the sesh. you's gots smooth steez, indeed! nice! as for swapping up boards, i'm always up for that. i love trying out different rides and appreciating the nuances. i'm TERRIBLE at recognizing folks so next time you see me please say hola and we'll swap things up for a few sets. in the meantime, i'll keep an eye out for you and the Tyler. peace.
Posted by: ck at July 9, 2004 02:01 PMlikewise on the terrible, ck. I don't know what it says about me but I'll more likely recognize your board than you next time. It seems that I always recall a board that isn't a 6'ish thruster or a "contemporary" long board. Drop me a line if you want to meet some other odd board riders this weekend.

Posted by: goodmorning at July 9, 2004 02:06 PMgoodmorning...i just read your second post. i'd drop ya an email, but the "handles" are no longer linked to the email addresses. thus, here goes...i HOPE to be out on Saturday, but it will likely be a little later than normal and i will likely be a little dazed...a buddy is getting married this weekend and the rehearsal dinner/booze-fest is tonight! i hope to have a clear nuff head to be out looking for some gentle waves around 9 or so and imagine that i'll be looking 'round the same "secret spot" as this morning. please keep an eye out for a hungover dude and his lady.
Posted by: ck at July 9, 2004 02:10 PMWow.
I'm usually peeking and poking around to see what's up. After a long dry streak, yesterday was pretty darn fun. Beautiful morning. Everyone in the water was friendly.
So... it was a real bonus to see some pix and figure out who some of the folks are here.
Sharkbait, hope your finger gets better soon. Bruce, great job (as usual) on the pictures!
We went out today at mid-beach. While there was some wind on it, it was very surfable. That was 7-9AM... having been tracking it since, but who cares... I'm cooked! :-)
Have a great weekend all... looking forward to sharing waves again.
Posted by: SFKneelo at July 9, 2004 02:13 PMbtw...goodmorning...i'd be psyched to meet up with some other "odd" board riders (assuming, of course, that their boards are the reason for the "odd" adjective! ; ). if it doesn't happen this weekend, hopefully some time soon. if you get a chance, drop me a note at curtis_kroeker at hotmail.com (for the rest of you heads who are, no doubt, tired of this mano-y-mano dialogue, please don't fill my inbox with spam ; ).

Posted by: busy bee at July 9, 2004 02:59 PMBruce's pix are wonderful! Big smiles here. As for abilities/lines/etc., going sideways is a recent enough development that it is still a cause for wonderment and celebration (and those waves were pretty damn congenial).
And another big plus: now when someone I don't know shouts "KOOK!" at me, there's another possible explanation!

CK check the email, sir.
Posted by: goodmorning at July 9, 2004 03:19 PMck - what color is your board again? i was out in your general vicinity for a while this morning, drifted north with the wind and watched goodmorning (didn't know who at the time) get 3.5 seconds of open face on a right before it dumped on the inside. then I paddled back a little south. Thanks for asking - hitting the water this weekend. 9 week splint - bah! Worshipping the altar of Dr. Duct tape, at least now I have a scape goat when I kook out!
Posted by: s.s. sharbait at July 9, 2004 04:47 PMKaiser- doh, I should have figured that out!

Late post- had to leave the office to get the back cracked at the neighborhood chiropractor!
Posted by: goodmorning at July 9, 2004 08:01 PMgot on it this evening. Funny when I first went out I was huffing and puffing because it was wave, paddle back out, wave, paddle, repeat etc. Then a bunch more guys paddled out, fortunately in a nice spread out picket line, and it got way inconsistent, too lined-up onshore crumbly. Boy that beach turns on and off. Glad I got my jones tho. Hey anyone notice that the bruise quotient goes way up on seshes on wind-hacked waves. Something about balance and the kind of eats you take? It's been souvenir city. Go south.

Posted by: Bruce at July 10, 2004 06:34 AMGood news is, I finally got back into the water this am after 5 weeks dry and had a blast, and my toe didn't hurt a bit.
BIGGER NEWS: I FOUND A GUITAR ON THE GREAT HIGHWAY NEAR KIRKHAM THIS AM 7/10/04 and would love to return it to it's owner. It was laying on the street next to an empty parking space. Looks like someone loaded the car with the amps and stuff and drove off without the guitar. E-is it yours? Drop me an email if anyone knows who the owner might be. Somebody out there is feeling the pain today.
This is weird. Two years ago I found a surfboard just laying in the parking lot at Kelly's. Nobody around but the tell tale wet spot on the ground showed signes of a wetsuit removed next to where the surfmobile was parked.

Posted by: Bruce at July 10, 2004 10:20 PMTHEY CAME FROM SILICON VALLEY. The dot-comers arrived at Bings the same way they downloaded the surf spots, the streets, and the shops of Santa Cruz. Suddenly, rudely, and in groups. The rapid pace of their invasive half conversations was blaring, cocky, intense, tightly clipped, and more focused than it needed to be. And God were these dot-comers loud! The static gibbering of their high-tech voices drowned out the yow-ing cries of seagulls, the damp barking of seals under the municipal wharf, and the waves slapping against the pier’s pilings. At least thirty-five dot-comers sat on long wooden benches, which were positioned around several wooden tables, draped with red-and-white checkered cloths. Each table setting had plates filled with a three-egg omelet, toast, along with huge side orders of bacon, sausage, or tofu. But the food was getting cold. Instead of eating, the dot-comers sat with their backs to the tables, and hunched over laptops on metal folding chairs in front of them. My patented stinkeye hardened on these trannies. Most were embedded in their twenties, obviously single—and probably not by choice. The guys were dumpy dorks or wiry geeks, and the women were attractive, but only when they were compared to the guys. The dot-comers even looked uncomfortable within themselves—they rubbed their chins, pulled at the skin around their eyes, rapidly moved one leg up and down, or squirmed in chairs, as if they were trying to work their way out of their own flesh. Just about all of them had that soft-white bulb office tan. Laminated company badges were clipped like hunting permits on their belts or pockets. They yammered on cell phones, headsets, and only took a break from clicking their keyboards to check beepers and palm pilots for incoming calls or e-mails. Their hand-held devices might have been communicating online, but for people who took pride in their networking skills, none of the dot-comers looked like they were connecting with one another or the world around them. I couldn’t tell if they were talking to themselves, speaking on a telephone headset, having a conversation with the person across from them, or babbling incoherently to an imaginary playmate...
“ It’s all about perceived value.”
“ IPO—”
“ An eBay secretary got rich on her stock options. A secretary! She didn’t know until she got back from vacation.”
“ HTML—”
“ I bet this gets the business up to four million and a deal to sell to Microsoft for twelve.”
“ TCP/IP—”
“ Pre-emptive multi-tasking is duplicating traffic...”
“ JAVA—”
“ A Boulder Creek guy sold his Loans.Com domain name for over a million dollars.”
“ Oh that's so Q-4! So Q-4.”
“ Hold down the option key and hit restart.”
I wished I could hold down the option key on them and hit restart. Q-4. HTML. JAVA IPO. TCP/IP. All I thought was B-F-D: Big Fucking Deal. It was nauseating. I swear, if aliens came to this planet, I would volunteer to be a slave trader.
I ordered my breakfast from a new menu that displayed computer graphics of surfers riding waves around the point breaks of increased food prices. The $3.99 special was now $6.99 and no longer came with a choice of bacon or sausage. The print was difficult to read because the fonts were several different sizes and colors (Sometimes the same color type was positioned on a digital illustration of a similar color and completely disappeared.). I absently spun my Dad’s gold ring on the finger above my right thumb and waited for Shiloh to bring me my Pepsi. It was a Tuesday. I planned to start it quietly on the outside deck of Bings, a well-run dump at the end of the wharf on the Westside of town. I usually powered down a “Locals Only” breakfast special with a cold Pepsi, then did my surf check at Pleasure Point, and—if the waves were good—I’d get a session in, and possibly, open my surf shop before noon. Unfortunately, there was nothing quiet about the start of this day. Quiet just wasn’t happening. The broadband of dot-comers overran my place and made it their own. They had some catered deal with a bar set-up. There were posts with silver metal poles topped with flying-saucer shaped hooded heaters positioned all around to remove the morning chill. They even had a massage table to give body-toneless geeks neck or shoulder rubs. I knew the masseuse, her name was Zoof, but she looked busy so I didn’t bother her. The geek she rubbed was face down with his head within an oval, sponge cradle that extended beyond the edge of the table. He watched a DVD-movie on his laptop, which was placed on the floor. His cell phone beeped on a small table near him. Without moving his head, he asked, “Can you get that?” Positioned on the wharf railing, behind Zoof’s set-up, was a one-foot high plastic windmill. The device blew a steady stream of tiny bubbles between revolving blades. I slightly suspected the machine produced bubbles by sucking out the air and replacing it with an atmosphere only the dot-comers could breathe.
