it's out there.
Not too windy, especially south of HMB. The buoys are down (SF buoy at 5ft 7sec) as the south swell wanes. Rising tide through the morning so you might feel the push somewhere. Today might be the “every dog has it’s day” day at random spots like Gazos or Sharp Park or Stinson or some shit like dat… not to name names or anything. I spent the night over in the East Bay so feel completely detached from the current oceanic vibe. I don’t know how all you East Bay heads do it? It would make me crazy to always have that huge bay separating me from the ocean. But, the East Bay has its benefits. Temperate, stellar weather, palm trees, Zachary’s pizza, ummm.. lots of young families, umm.. err?? What exactly are the benefits of living in the (L)east Bay?? Ha!! Just kiddin’ with you East Bay home-slices. I like all the cottage-houses with all the gardens and trees and flowers. I like the uber-liberal, intellectual , ultra-PC feel, I like the Albany Bulb, I like Indian Rock, I like the warmth and the sunshine. If I was into punk rock or if I was 17 yrs old I would absolutely love Gilman theater. Tilden park is heady. I like Blue Note music on Telegraph (best place for jazz guitars and amps). Chez Panisse is nice. Sprawl (sp?) Plaza is a great place to play footbag. On a huge west swell the Berkeley Marina can offer up some seductive, peeling longboard lines. There’s a great longboard skate route from that huge white hotel all the way down into the flats (recommended late-night, post traffic). Good burritos at Cactus. The Greek Theatre is my favorite outdoor venue. Too Short. Primus. Joshua Redman. Charlie Hunter. Will Bernard. 3to5. Eye-doctor Steve. Capoeira Café. Beers out back at Jupiter. Loads of academic cuties. Hummingbirds. Kasuri Dieworks. Hoops at People’s Park. Magazine racks at Cody’s bookstore. Good Indian food.
East Bay!!
Berkeley Marina

Posted by: at July 21, 2004 10:38 AMeast bay is where i am, it's where my friends are, my kids' friends, the gig that pays for my life, community, and oh yeah my little cottage with plants and driveway and love inside... i love it here. of course, all of the niceness comes with badness too: hookers on the corners, condoms in the backyard thrown out the motel windows (g-d effers they are), freeway soot, 30 minutes minimum to our fair ocean beach (naturally 60 minutes when there's surf). there's good and bad with everything. i quess we just try to give ourselves the best possible environment we can....
my wife and I are very actively trying to figure if we can move to the city somewhere. how likely would we be to find a house to rent (not a shared wall apartment) in the sunset, panhandle, richmond, for say $15-1700? biggish 2 BR, kid friendly, safe area. i'm jonesin to be closer to the ocean, and my wife is too. we own a house here in loverly ghettolicious oaktown (i had some random person tell me i was ghetto last night: how cool is that?! i fancy myself as un-ghetto, but sometimes you are what people think you are), but can't afford SF houses. what the eff to do?
i gotta increase my currently weekly surf sessions. can't easily do it from soooo far away.... pacifica? maybe. marin... no. SF? maybe.

Posted by: oaktown daddy at July 21, 2004 10:38 AMWhat up niceness posse,
Man, I think there are some pretty good waves at OB right now. Wasn't in the cards for me this morning. I don't want to turn this into "E's used equipment billboard" but I have a brand new 6' 8" Al Merrick "MBM" model squash tail shortboard I want to sell and I figured I would give the niceness crew first shot. It is 19 and 1/4 wide and 2 and 5/8 thick (a really tapered to the rail 2 and 5/8 so it is floaty but feels thinner). Its a killer board and the MBM is the template Al is currently using for most of his team riders and a really popular model. The reason I am selling it is that I have another 6'8" Merrick I like a little better and I want to use the money for other stuff. I've ridden the board 4-5 times and have had it for under 3 weeks. It is in mint condition. Its a great board for a bigger guy who wants a high performance board that will paddle well at OB (I'm 5"11" 190). I bought it for $530 and it has a $30 pad on it. I will sell it for $400 with Merrick fins. If I don't hear back from someone soon, I'm going to put it in the shop at Aqua. E-mail me if your interested with a phone number and I'll get in touch. Later
Posted by: Suneil at July 21, 2004 10:51 AMThere was clean stuff to be had not far away. Not a lot of size, but good enough for me, and fortunately lots fewer people than yesterday at El Jetty.
BTW, if anyone found some men's booties at the Jetty yesterday, erm, they could just possibly be mine . . . (anon-KloolessKook at craigslist.org). Relatedly, water-shoes that are a size too big are not necessarily the optimal replacements for booties; but they do eventually wash up on the beach.

OB: Currently thigh-head ...[a bit bigger at lower tide, 6 footers definitely so keep eye on the wind later]...very very mooshy, but rideable. Foggy and steady onshores, yet no whitecaps and it's not nearly so lumpy as one would expect. Peaks are sparse, lulls, currently 1-3 takers scattered solo about the beach. Not epic but not hopeless slop either. Look around, like e surmised it is out there.

SHOUT OUTS to East Bay LADIES- what a lovely Melting Pot of femininity, Alice Arts and all their programs, the WEEKLY conglomeration of folks, drums, music, food and misc. schraka at the FLEA- those folks turn it out rain or shine, to the A's, to my Cruiser, to the B-town born and bred, most premiere Solar Company in the world -PowerLight, to backyard bungalows with vegi gardens, Ethiopian food, The Skate Park, Bicycle Boulevards, the Hills, Tilden, Sibley, shouts to O****, where that Kaiser Thong shot may have been snapped, shouts to the best Market in the world, Be*****y B**l......, to V**s, the best Indian in Nor Cal
(**i mean shit, when do i ever have a chance to keep a secret from y'all**) :)
Not that I have not looked at rooms/houses by the Beach. I have. The temptation is daily, but no matter how you look at it- the commute would be insane.
Last Spring, after a fully satisfying Sat AM surf, my bro and I ate sandwiches outside AG Ferrari on Piedmont, lamenting our EBay distance from our Mama Ocean. We sat and chomped, disgruntled. Almost on cue, a barbershop quartet set up across the street and began harmonizing. For the rest of lunch, we were graced with their vocal splendor, their harmony and rhythym, spirit and ROOTS. We looked at eachother and smiled- only in Oakland. Thats why we're here.
I won't buy this far from Mama Ocean however. Cant do it
Being a East Bay surfer is a challenge. The Mantra in our EB Surfer Circle: WE'RE GOING. IT does not matter how funky, crossed up, windy, pinner or Chunkafied the Ocean may be. We just crossed that Bridge, manuvered the cross Market hell, dropped down to 3rd gear, Motored up Fell and now, we suit up REGARDLESS of Conditions.. That level of commitment is refreshing, I have no choice.
Saw Riding Giants last night. Greg Noll is my favorite. Especially knowing that for the last 25 years, he has lived in Crescent City and operated commercial fishing boats, relatively anonomously. That Guy Defines CORE.
Rad to see Washburn riding Mavs on a SHITTY onshore day (end of Movie). That guy oozes Stoke.
My buddy said he saw him at OB on the Channel side of Seal Rock on a big South day. Supposedly, some Cove headz didn't know who he was and had some criticisms... gimme a break.
Happy to tour any Niceness headz around our E Bay hood. Give me a shout, hop the BART with your Cruiser and let me illuminati your perspective on the Bay Area.
oaktown daddy, biggish 2 BR house for under $2k in the sunset is a steal, more so even in the richmond
suneil - good luck. I've watched the used rack at SF for years, and never seen a used shortboard fetch that much - but craigslist and ebay would be your best bet. Somehow funboards/longboards hold value well, but shorter thrusters don't.

In my dreams I can be near the waves, or heading out to them invitingly, but I cannot seem to actually RIDE dream surfboards on dream waves. Sometimes waves show up in the strangest places: roaring down a back alley in the city, rolling down a thickly forested creek bed, even joined a line-up of headz waiting for perfect glassy swell near a wooden dock on a lake in southern New Jersey. REM sleep offers just as much as the waking life, that's where I climb the vision vine.

Crap. I don't think the link to my e-mail went through. Anyways it's suneilthomas@sbcglobal.net. CBarney, sorry for the delayed response. I bought the board of the rack but I really like the tapered volume to the rails. I have found that a lot of the float of a board is in the chest anyway and if you bring it flat out to the rails, you get a really boxy board that doesn't turn well. The other Merrick I liked was the MX. I think I am the only person I have talked to that likes it more than the MBM. Blakestah, I know $400 is high for a used board but not high for a brand new Merrick that has been used 5 times. You can find cheaper boards for sure but this is the cheapest way most people will ever get to try a Merrick. I've been "player hating" on the guy for years thinking his boards are overpriced but they are flat out the fastes most responsive boards I have ever ridden and I've tried a bunch of different ones. He just has the consistency, computer shaped blank thing down.

Posted by: e at July 21, 2004 03:50 PMon the spot naming on this site. i have no doubt in my mind it has an effect on the crowds. a certain spot whose name has been called many times over the past few days was populated with more surfers on one single afternoon than i have seen there total in the past 5 years. i gotta believe the reason is this website. use technology how you wish. if you wish to surf waves with a bunch of guys whose abilities are so limited that they create danger in the lineup, post the spot on this site and your wish will be granted. on the other hand, if you wish to surf waves with a couple of buddies and no hassle, stay quiet on the spot, talk about what a fun time you had and no more on this site, and let everybody do their own work in finding places to surf. everybody can make their own choice. just realize your choice has effects not only yourself, but everybody else who likes to surf uncrowded waves with a couple of buddies.

Posted by: cadaver at July 21, 2004 04:08 PMNope, that spot has been crowded for the last several months.
It is because this summer has SUCKED! When the waves were small and the winds were blowing south, where did everyone driving on the coast go?
They went where other people were.
This discussion is bullshit and tired! The reason these "normally-not-populated" breaks are crowded or seem to get more activity is related more the the fact that the following:
1) People follow other people.
2) These breaks are along the ONLY corridor which delivers to them.
3) Did I mention that this summer has sucked in comparison to the last few years?
If you think I tell a lie, drive to a certain cove near a certain large wave magnet in San Mateo county. It is not "along the road" and you will not see what many people out. Why? Because most people don't have the balls to paddle out there!
I speak the truth! And this spot naming crap is over-hyped!
BTW, there is a 6 ft south coming in from 220 degrees RIGHT NOW! Head to your favorite south facing break in El Granada for some shackage. You can see it from the road and it will be firing.....
But only until 6:00 tonight, so hurry....
Posted by: Kaiser at July 21, 2004 04:15 PMYou should learn a lesson from game theory. Remember the Prisoner's Dilemma? If not, click here to understand it. Basically, it says that people will ultimately act in their own self interest, which is against the good of the whole population.
Now apply that to surfing and naming spots. Given: no matter how many times you lecture people, they'll keep naming spots. Given: some number of lame surfers will go to a spot because it was named (even if there are better spots to be found with a little work.) Therefore, the logical conclusion is that you should give up trying to keep people from naming spots. Instead, you should name as many spots as possible, using different user names, different report styles, etc. If you do it well, real spot naming will be indistinguishable from fake spot naming and you'll end up with people randomly distributed among all the spots or depending on some other criteria to look for a spot. I call this "throwing chaff", after the airplane missile countermeasures.
Let's give it a shot on this board -- but be sure to blend in!

Surfing is extremely mainstream these days, everybody wants to do it, not many people can. To think that naming a spot on the cali coast in a message board results in said spot being overcrowded is just a load of 'whatever that brown stuff is' floating around in the water at that spot.

and to hog some bandwidth to fill the voids between sets.

Posted by: korewin at July 21, 2004 04:45 PMkaiser, i agree that other factors play into the crowded situation. but naming names on this site has changed the game. i've personally been out at ******* and heard guys mention THIS VARY SITE as a good source for surf 411.....

Clean and double-overhead at LMNOP, light offshore breeze. Due to astronomical anomoly, no tides today. Industrial accident at nearby brewery has turned ocean into beer. Bring jumper cables: Reef Girl's tour bus broken down in parking lot. Yeah, and, uh, someone found a penguin.

Posted by: Jetty Master at July 21, 2004 04:56 PMNo doubt spot naming is probably over-hyped but even one less head out when you finally get there for your sesh can mean one or two extra waves so why take chances? Is it really that fun to name a spot? Is it really that hard to be covert? Sure people will clue in but let them do it gradually with a little work, like most of us had to do. Remember surfing before the internet? Wasn't so bad if you ask me.
My last preach on this point, y'all do what you gotta do, I know I will still catch my fair share.

Aack! I've named a spot!

Posted by: Klooless at July 21, 2004 05:11 PMsomeone asked where all the good vibes went.
they burned up at two crucial events:
1. when e sold out to the locals so he could get more waves at local spots.
2. when kaiser ushered in censorship during e's latin america trip.

Posted by: at July 21, 2004 05:52 PMAaahh! Could it be as simple as this. Does the population size increase the propensity of getting a few bad apples?
Or even simpler: "Less waves means more aggro behaviour."
Would this testiness be here if the buoy was 11' at 15 sec. with a very slight southeast breeze???
Posted by: Jack at July 21, 2004 06:07 PMMy 2 cents: it's summer. Waves suck and school's out. So there are way more tiny tots in the water. Blame the media for getting everyone "into" surfing and taking their brand new board out to your fave spot.
It's good to remember that they'll all be gone in September, right about when things start happening again.
Oh yeah, and they don't DP.........

Posted by: trany at July 21, 2004 10:49 PMok, so i shouldn't put landmarks in photo's that i've taken.
maybe next i could put a black box on everything that isn't water.
yeah right!
if you know those spots, then they are not that secret. and does that matter? none have been named.
if you print out a picture of this comments page and drive the the coast looking for a match. then you deserve to find it. and if you do, please be responsible, don't bring a truckload of people with you. surf by yourself or one other. respect the lineup and be smart. don't be a beligerent selfish fool.
but chances of knowing what tides, what swell and how to get out... as well as putting up with the locals of all sorts. that information was carefully with-held.
now. this community is getting bigger.
hopefully the niceness will spread.
i frequent this blog because i live here and i surf these waters. i appreciate the efforts of ethan. the crew that regularly posts on this site live here and are a good bunch of people. im excited that a community of sorts is forming. its nice to see some niceness, cause more often than not stink eye prevails. i'm for smiles.
if you have problems with what i post, then email me. save the pop shots for a decent conversation. not one that you brodcast your righteousness. pop shots like these lead to a rift between factions. thus, spreading the "non-niceness" and making for unpleasant banter.
i know my retort is a "pop" shot of shorts, but i think over the time that i have spent reading and posting, i have tried to put forth a positive spin on most topics. taking care to be respectful and share some stoke.
in the absence of good surf and a little extra time, i dug up some pics from years ago (5 or so) and decided to share with the peeps. if i am out of line by doing this, then i'll stop. but please, lets save our angst for things like civil liberties and changing the world to be a better place.
aight.

P-Dee at Ockaway-Ray Each-Bay. Aist-way to oulder-shay. Empty at sunrise, but by the time I left at 7 AM there were 7 in the water and 1 in the parking lot. Including a ee-knay oarder-bay. The bathrooms were locked, so I took my orning-may it-shay at McDonald's.
Posted by: Andrew on 44th at July 22, 2004 08:20 AMno offense elias, but i disagree with posting pictures of somewhat secret spots that show landmarks that give away their location. you're right that place is super fickle and the shot is super small, so i'm not too worried about it. just voicing my opinion, not taking "pop" shots.
Posted by: aes at July 22, 2004 09:12 AMI wasn't going to post today but...
Elias, great comments.
AES, I just want to point out something to you and to the other people that take offense to things posted: At first glance, I didn't look at Elias' photos as some secret spot or series of spots. I only saw them as cool looking waves in a cool looking collage. However, with YOUR comments, I now know that these photos are from some "secret" type of spot near or far from here. Now I am intrigued!
So, I ask all of you, who is being more destructive here? Just keep this in mind when you think to point out something you feel is wrong or "exposing".
Not everyone knows what you know!

Instead of surfing secret spots, I decided to surf secret times. Early bird catches the wave.
And why are people who are surfing the net caring about what happens in the ocean? I haven't seen a single post saying, "I got back from a surf session that was totally crowded with internet geeks."
Posted by: Ndrew-A on Orty-Fourth-Fay at July 22, 2004 10:01 AMSounds like you went for it after all, (I don't know what the official pig-latin grammar yields for "Andrew"). I was there real early, looked at it for 15 minutes, and no waves showed up. So I headed elsewhere and got a few lefts, including one really fun one, where I got three pretty good drops and turns. good vibe, too, among the two or three others out there. the one guy who was out before me was hooting & stuff. i need to figure out how the hooting practice works: when do you hoot, exactly? are there different hoots for different purposes?
Posted by: Klooless at July 22, 2004 10:17 AMOver 1000 unique visitors every day this week here on the niceness surf report. 1,335 yesterday. most ever! also first time over 100 comments.
What's your goal here bro? Seriously, what is your intent with this website? I'm all about having a stoked filled venue for a few people to share the love, but I think everyone is kidding themselves if they think this site is still being read by just a few with zero effect on crowds. No this discussion is not tired! Surfing is and should always be a unique lifestyle not a mainstream activity where any schmo can participate. I think this site was great when a few people could share some stoke amongst bro's but whether you know it or not, your "good vibe" intent in my view is having negative repurcussions on our little Norcal surf scene. It reminds me of the difference between the guys who really rip and say nothing vs. the guys that are mediocore to poor that do nothing but talk shit in the water. I mean no offense but the majority of the people on this site can't surf well, are not locals, and are relatively new to the sport. So why do you feel obliged to infuriate those who have earned this? What would happen if the guys that sat on the shoulder at Pipe tried to set up a chat room without the voices of the guys who sat on the peak? You got it, would never happen. I have always looked to surfers like Curren who let their surfing tell the story. I love surfing and know your intentions are good but its backfiring man. If your intent is to water-down one of the most core activities on the planet than you are succeeding. Sorry to rant here, but I'm interested to know what you are trying to accomplish by having more hits on your site, more people divulging names of spots, and encouraging more new surfers into an already clogged lineup.
