Junky and small

Yesterday looked mini and fun but this morning it’s tiny and junkified. The SW wind is beating it down. Maybe a voyage south will place you at a spot with less wind? Somewhere between SF and SC probably your best bet. I tweaked my back again yesterday playing footbag (grrr!!!!!) soo.. my stint on the Injured Reserve might be extended. Sucks!! But, as I began feeling sorry for myself this morning I heard this radio program about people waiting for organ transplants, hanging onto life by a thread and just hoping for another few months to live. That slapped me back into reality. Can you imagine going about your life as a healthy 20-something, trying to find pockets of happiness amidst the rat-race turmoil, then suddenly you’re on the ground unconscious because your heart just decided to give out. The next thing you know you’re in the ambulance being rushed to the hospital. After a few unsuccessful surgeries to try to repair your heart the doctor looks at you with some compassion and tells you that you’re going to need a transplant in order to survive. Suddenly your whole life takes on new meaning. The little things like stubbing your toe or getting dissed by Susie Fishman take on less importance. Suddenly your life-long aspirations of having kids, starting your own radio station, taking care of your parents when they get old, traveling around the world, finding a partner to get old with, being a grumpy ol’ guy rocking in a chair on the porch, look like far away pipe-dreams. Suddenly just making it to the next month is the challenge. Cheers to the people struggling just to make it one more day. Life is tenuous. Case in point: I got attacked by a fucking Pit Bull on Saturday. I was skateboarding in Oakland when this snarling Death Dog comes running up and chomps down on my knee, knocking me off my skateboard. Luckily the dog just gave me a little love-bite and I was left with a scrape and a tooth-sized puncture wound in my knee. The dog could’ve ripped my knee to shreds and I would have forgotten about my little wimpy back injury. The human animal is fragile and temporal. Enjoy what you have while you have it! Don’t take it for granted.

Anyone else have a close encounter with the shark on saturday? I was out there right by it and came in when my buddy started waving at me but I never saw it. Everyone on the beach seemed to see it though.

Guess there is a first for everything!

Dang! Sorry to hear about the pitbull attack. Crazy. Did you call the police or animal control? I was attacked by two dalmations (they aren't as friendly as cartoons make them out to be!) when I was in high school and it totally blew.

Posted by: mwsf at July 26, 2004 10:22 AM

sucks about the dalmation attack mwsf.. geez. I might call animal control just to report the incident and notch one more attack in the pit bull category.

I love dogs. truly. love them. But.. pit bulls have been breed for fighting for a long time. The sfgate article posted by cadaver above includes some frightening numbers about how often pit bulls attack humans, compared to any other breed. Way more! If you own a Pit Bull, make sure you can hold onto the leash when a skateboarder rolls by, not like the dumb-ass lady who dropped the leash on saturday, allowing her snarling demon dog pit bull to bite me and knock me down!!

Posted by: e at July 26, 2004 10:31 AM

When I was a kid it seemsed every damn dog (disclaimer: I'm a dog lover too) would chase me when I rode my bicycle around the neighborhood. They always went to the foot and ankle area. I used the bike as a protective barrier. I guess that's kinda hard to do with a skateboard.

I surfed Sat and Sun but no signs of sharks, but I may may have seen Sharkbait in the water yesterday around 8:30ish??? Sunday am soloing til another woman joined?

Posted by: Dennis at July 26, 2004 10:55 AM

My mother-in-law was attacked by a pit bull owned by the son of a long-time friend. It wasn't leashed. It took both of them to pull the dog off. Her wrists were pretty mauled.
The subject of what to do with a dog that's attacked is tricky. The mother defended her son's choice to keep the dog alive, which quickly distanced the relationship she had with my mother-in-law.
Some say the 'first bites free.' I wouldn't bank on that given the potential liabilities.

Anyhow, a buddy is just starting surfing. He's 40, 6'1", about 200lbs and in good shape. He makes a good income, so he decided to buy a board.

He ended up buying two boards, which I inspected with him. Being a long-time kneelo, it was tough to think back to beginning, and then know what's a good value for stand-up boards... so...

The first board is a 9'6" Robert August Wingnut II single-fin... fairly narrow. It has a couple of small star-dings, but is in great shape.

The 2nd board is a Pearson Arrow 7'8" tri-fin with a rounded nose, but not to the extent that I'd call it a funboard. It is clean... no dings.

IMHO, both boards seemed to have solid resale value.

The deal included a fairly used boardbag and a leash.

Two questions:
Is that a good combination of boards for him to grow into? (Remember, he can afford it)
What would you pay for the package?

Thanks!

Pets are over-rated. Raise championship fighting kids instead. E, Report it, people who can't control thier pets should not have them. SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at July 26, 2004 11:00 AM

When charged by a pitbull, do the following.
1) jump off the skateboard, and cock foot rearwards
2) begin to swing foot forward as pitbull apprroaches
3) kick the living snot out of him if he doesn't retreat. Grab skateboard, and demonstrate that whereas he weighs 40-50 lbs, you have triple his weight and 100 times his intelligence.
4) Grab his collar, call 5-0, and make his owner pay you to give the dog back before the police come. Don't accept less than $100, that dog attacked you and should be put to sleep.

SFKneelo, those sound pretty good. For the package...I dunno. I don't buy softtops. But a longboard used in good shape will be $350-400, and a funboard size about $50 less, so around $600-700, probably closer to $700 with the board bag.

I spotted SFKNeelo doing a wicked spinner on his kneeboard this weekend.

Posted by: blakestah at July 26, 2004 11:12 AM

SFkneelow,

That's the kind of thing making me gag. Guys buying two, basicly longboards, and he's just starting out.

Myself, I'm riding a beat to shit 6'4", broken and repaired nose with dings full of wax, pressure cracks all up and down. Not to boast, but I've been surfing 20 years and can pull airs, get barrled, smack the lip, etc. I even surf the odd contest now and then. Longboard contests that is.

The thing is the surf industry tries to tell us we need new, shiney boards built to the exact 1/8 inch. That's total bullshit. You need to get into the gym, run the beach, achieve some wave knowledge, skateboard the park, snowboard etc.

Of course, a 5'10 isn't going to work for someone 200lbs, but you really do not need two longboards.

Or maybe I'm just jealous, cuz I can barley scrape enough for rent?

Any of you guys see the Laird Hamilton segment on 60 Minutes last night? It was a little weird to see a spot on him that was so clearly self-promotional--not really about big wave surfing or anything with a message, more about "Laird as hero". Just had a strange feel about it (although it's always fun to see him on that cho-pu wave from a few years back).

One thing that they showed during the segment was Laird's training training technique which reminded me of a couple posts from last week about raking the beach to keep it clean. One of his tricks is to fasten a harness to a log and drag it along the sand. I figure there's got to be a couple big-wave heros around these parts looking to get in shape for the winter. How's abouts dragging a rake around from VFW's to Lincoln every Saturday and Sunday morning. Come December the paddle-out will seem like a cake walk and the beach will be as well-groomed as a lonely guy on a first date. Volunteers??

...Caught some fun waves on Saturday. Completely solo for 45 mins, then traded chest-high peelers with one other for another 30 mins, and then the 8am weekend crew congerved with a vengence. Amazing how much lack of sleep is rewarded on weekends. Hope everyone had some fun.

anybody have opinions on those phat boards vs. a carve board?

oh and, i don't know why people have to talk trash about a beginner buying a decent board... maybe 2 at once is a bit, but hell, let him go for it... buying used is way smarter anyway, not like the guys that go in and buy a brand new one for them and their son and after 2 months give up... in fact, that's the guy you should buy from! ;)

e, you are so right about the tenuous nature of life. I went through a lymphoma/cancer scare in 2002 and a strange nervous system illness that mimicked MS earlier this year. Bohth were horrible experiences I ended up OK and w/o disease. But just sitting in a room with cancer patients, ALS patients -- it's a random throw of the die for these poor souls. Carpe diem and love the life force you've been given, always.

DOGS HATE that "Scrrrrrrkkk" sound of a skateboard, it triggers the primal bite-bite reaction. FACT!

I got attacked by a big dog near Alta Plaza (bombing Pacific Heights hills) and had to lay into it with my skate deck while the owner looked on astonished by his out-of-control dog. Yes, a dalmation -- they are fucking mean dogs. I clocked it 1 time across the head -- end of attack! The skateboard as weapon -- very useful.

The thing is all the crap that is on the beach in August, gets washed offshore on the first big day in Sept or Oct.

The littering retards don't go on the beaches in the winter, so they stay pretty clean until the retards get out of school again in spring.

So to all you environmentaly conscious surfers out there, we plead you help carry some of the bigger crap off the beach before the first bigger swell. Nothing worse than having shopping carts and pallets as a reef.

I saw four sharks this morning. They had nasty pointy teeth, and kept surfacing, showing their dorsal fins, before going back under. I kept wondering to myself why a shark would repeatedly surface. I mean, it is not like they need to come up to breath. But no, these were sharks, I am **SURE** they were.

If only I had remember to see whether their tails were oriented vertically or horizontally. Oh well, I left the water and shouted to everyone there that there were sharks and we were all in mortal danger, and that they buried a whale that was killed by navy sonar where only 570 billion gallons of water washes over with every tide change and man somebody is going to get eaten and I better let everyone know I saw a dorsal fin surfacing repeatedly and that I am **SURE** it was a shark and man I was scared out of my skin and did I mention it was a shark and I am **SURE** it was and wow I'm amazed no one got eaten...I wasn't **SURE** the first time it came up, but when it kept coming up at regular intervals I was **SURE** it was a shark. Dunno why those seals around me weren't scared in the slightest...

Posted by: blakestah at July 26, 2004 01:33 PM

I was out on the Happy Hooker off of Daly City / Pacifica fishing for Striper on Saturday and saw what looked like a white shark surfacing for a gulp of something. Hey Mr. Stah,
That was the same guy w/the soft-top on Saturday, but that was a borrowed board. Anyhow, that's right about on-the-money for the deal. I've been so locked into my own process for getting boards I haven't tracked prices at all. It was kinda awkward giving advice.
BTW, right back atcha. You bagged a nice left right after getting out, and after about 20 minutes of flatness. You're making quite an arguement for those rotating fins!

Karkus,
I hear ya! Time will tell on this. He's full of enthusiasm, and has the financial abilities. The 9'6" looks like a great pointbreak noserider... fast, point, go. Kinda narrow, not really a 'high-performance' longboard... more old school. The 7'8" definitely looks like it turns.
I'm going to try and get him on the 7'8", hoping that board sways him towards shortboarding... but if he longboards, oh well.

Regarding gym, etc. He bought the 'Surf Fitness' program, and has me working out with him over lunches. Definitely a fringe benefit for me. Meanwhile, I'm mentoring him on the ways of the sea. Like I said, he's pretty enthusiastic.

Like you, I've been at it for close to 30 years. Oddly enough, this is the 1st grom I've mentored. Good practice for my kids! (Assuming of course, under their own free will, w/o ANY pressure from Dad ;-) they decide to surf.)

Posted by: SFKneelo at July 26, 2004 01:58 PM

Once you're in the water you're part of the food chain!

There are schools feeding off anchovies of the bay area beaches right now. Seals are feeding off the perch and stripers, sharks are feeding off the seals.

The Santa Cruz area is safe due to the kelp. I'm wondering when the next bite will take place off of linda mar/devils slide area?

got back last night from a humid and surfless week on the east coast. hit ob around 10:30 this morning where a handful of rippers were making do, and i joined them and got a few bowly drops out there. great just to be back.

nice lead with the health tip, e. my dad is a liver transplantee ('97), though unlike your example he played a big role in the hand he was dealt hand due to years of drinking (& perhaps oo much tylenol). he quit drinking after an initial scare and a family intervention but 18 months later his liver still gave out. and you're right, waiting on that organ "donation" was nuts. he's doing pretty good these days but will probably need immunosuppresant drugs for the rest of his life, and will face complications because of that. so far, he's had kidney trouble, the growth of a 'fungus ball' that occupied a third of one of his lungs, a bit of mouth cancer and most recently, a rotted hip joint due to avascular necrosis (an under-acknowledged risk to anyone taking steroids!). very thankfully he has decent health care & providers, and keeps on keepin on at age 60. he seems to understand the appeal of surfing without ever having tried it.

Posted by: loon at July 26, 2004 02:04 PM

For the bay area you really need a 6'6" shortboard, 6'10-7' rounded pin for overhead beachbreaks, 7'4"-7'10" pin for well overhead beachbreaks, 9'-10' gun for mavericks, 9'-14' longboard for mushy and sharky conditions.

BTW, do sharks attack longboards? I figure you have more foam between you and those teeth?

Last shark sighting at OB was June 19th, when it was relatively clean and glassy like this past weekend's shark sighting. Based on the postings today, it really must be shark week. Was watching last night and they interviewed the guy up in bolinas who got attacked a few years back. FYI - He was on a longboard.

TheDonk - I really like my phatshape. I ride a Karv which my buddy used to shape down in San Diego. I haven't ridden a Carve but I understand that due to the inflateable tires they don't spin out on anything. As I really enjoy spinning 180s (on big hills to get my speed down)on my Karv, I think I might miss this if I were go move to a Carve. Besides that, Carves are really heavy and therefore not best for travel. If your looking for a fun, fast board that really feels like a surf/snow board and you want to take it with you on occassional business/pleasure trips for sightseeing purposes, I suggest getting a phatshape (Greenbrew also makes similar shapes).

Posted by: Klooless at July 27, 2004 07:42 AM

two people i know saw two different sharks in two different occasions. they alerted someone from sonlight surf shop who alerted the local police. i guess they posted a couple of cops up on the hill with binoculars after. dunno if they ever so anything. someone mentioned that there are a lot of anchovies and salmon in the water? plus the murkiness of the water, probably redtide, makes it an ideal restaurant for the sharks.

Shark Sighting, SF: On Saturday, July 24th, at 10:30 AM, Rob McArthur was about 30 yards from shore in the lineup at North Ocean Beach. There were about 10 or 12 other surfers in the area. Rob reported, "I observed a dorsal fin moving parallel to the beach, essentially swimming down the lineup of surfers. The fin was about 10 inches in height. I only observed the tip of the shark's tail once. The fin would submerge below the surface for a few moments then reappear. I went ashore, along with the other surfers. While on the beach I watched the shark for about 5 minutes before leaving."

But wait, folks, that's not all:

Shark Sighting, Linda Mar: On Monday, July 26th, J.J. Powell was about 75 yards from shore at the north end of Linda Mar Beach. It was 12:05 PM and he had been in the water about an hour. There were 9 or 10 other surfers in this area with four surfers just south of his location. It was sunny with a brisk wind and the water was Òvery murky, almost a reddish color.Ó Three Harbor Seals were observed inside of the surfers in the white water. JJ recounted, ÒI saw a dorsal fin, 12 to 18 inches in height, about 125 yards from the beach or 50 yards further out from where I was in the lineup. The sharkÕs dorsal fin seemed to be shifting back and forth as if the shark were twisting in the water. The shark rolled slightly to one side and its tail, which was very large, came out of the water as it moved from side to side. I thought I saw a ÔhumpÕ in the water near the shark. It appeared to me as though the shark might have been feeding on something. One of the other surfers thought he saw something spotted floating in the water near his location. We decided to alert the other surfers in the area and began yelling to get their attention. After we exited the water we saw the shark a second time, about 20 yards north of its original location, moving slowly across the surface.Ó

Although a positive identification of these sharks is not possible, White Sharks are known to frequent the Ocean Beach and Linda Mar areas. It is suggested that caution be exercised while using this area for your ocean activity. Please report any shark encounters to the Shark Research Committee link below.
