suurrrrffffff
Top o’ the morning. Looks small and marginal out there again. Might be like this for the next few days here at OBSF. The local wind isn’t acting too cooperative, blowing with aggression out of the SW… but just within city limits. Our friendly neighbor to the south looks pretty groomed and maybe extremely fun on a thicker board? Very little wind down there, and the faint breeze looks to be blowing offshore. You might find yourself zipping along a score of micro-peelers, laughing your head off and having a great time. Who knows? Kaiser probably knows. Klooless probably knows. Yuskei probably hit it. Lermified funkification? Again I feel like a faker because I’m still out of the loop. Blah blah my back blah blah injury blah blah. You know the story. I remember a few mornings last summer when the wind mellowed out and a little bitty south swell eeked into OB. The sets where maybe waist high and peeling in about 2 feet of water. I remember having a blast trying to work the waves for every little kernel of energy they offered. Subtle pumping, short-board-cross-stepping, knee-hugging crouches, body-surfing. Just good times in the ocean. Don’t tell anyone, but sometimes I enjoy small waves more than big ones! I’ll take perfect glassy shoulder-high peaks over mammoth double-overhead craziness with a million duckdives.
I’m feeling the “haven’t surfed in forever” depression. Sucks! I can mind-surf, watch vids, longboard skate, visualize, write about surfing, etc. but… it ain’t the same thang!
Once again.. THANK GOD FOR THE MUSIC!! Seriously. I got really depressed about 4 years ago when I couldn’t play footbag anymore because of a recurring arch injury. I was living with hard-core footbaggers, We video-taped every session. People around me were inventing moves and at the forefront of the entire sport. Then I got injured. Something that had been a core part of my life for 7 years was ripped away. I felt abandoned and lost. I was still in the middle of this community of footbaggers but I couldn’t participate. It drove me crazy. But.. lucky for me.. the guitar and I had a little 3-month binge. Hours and hours of angered, saddened, eruptive musical noise and expressing and ugliness and occasional glimpses of beauty resulted. Since then I’ve come to terms with the fact that the body is temperamental. The ability to participate in athletics at a high level is extremely dependent on the vagaries of physical health. Music, on the other hand, connects much more directly with the mind. The pathway from imagination to expression is much more immediate and direct with musical creation. In surfing, you get those moments where everything comes together, the wave, your ability, the crowd, your board. In surfing you sometimes get that one turn that really resonates and pervades your whole being with personal fulfillment. But.. it’s tough when your make surfing a dominant personal outlet in your life. When surfing is the major mode of personal expression and fun in your life and your body farts on you… that can be a recipe for heart-ache. I learned it from footbag the hard way.
Music, man!
Learning to play an instrument contains many of the same feelings of personal gratification as surfing. There is the never-ending learning curve. There is the spirit of improvisation and freestyle. There is the “cool” factor. There is a deep history of human beings who have taken the discipline to unbelievable heights. Every musician, like every surfer, has their own style.
But unlike surfing, music is inclusive. It’s better to play in a group than play by yourself. It doesn’t derive from an inherently limited quantity (waves). There aren’t any bad-vibes or localism. Girls play music almost as much as guys!
Anyway.. that’s my little rant. (as you can tell i'm bitter that i can't surf!)
Lots of thoughtful comments on the board yesterday. Cool to hear some of the old HMB crew pipe up.

Although I live 3 towns up from HMB now, I still regard the area as sacred.
I was walking the beach below the Ritz and noticed all the bright green golf course fertilizers flowing down a waterfall straight to the ocean. Again, fucking bullshit. Fish and marine life can't take that shit.
The place is farmland, not Atherton-by-the-sea. I'm sure the farms dump too, but that is for food, not for billionares to play some retarded game.

Posted by: at July 28, 2004 10:27 AMRight you are! Clean and small--at least it was at DP. Maybe shouldda brung the funboard, but optimistically I shortboarded it. Still I managed to grab enough 2-ft rides to nowhere to add actiony spice to the glassy sense of well-being. I'd driven all of OB and there were zero takers, reasonably enough.
Advice-parasite query #43: I've only been on a shortboard for a little while, but several times I've botched take-offs with my back foot slipping off (more often I've botched them with my front foot tangled in the leash; maybe that's #44). Casting about for something to blame other than my manifest lack of ability, I've been wondering if a traction pad would be worthwhile---gift or gimmick?

Besides, I bet you are good at other "sports" like fishing! Yeah, that is a good one. Unless you are pulling in a marlin, tuna, great white, or the like, your little flounder isn't much of a workout either.
Sucks that the locals in Pathetica/Moss Beach/HMB et al will be invaded one day. But, that day will come with Charlie Land Owner decides his day is coming and he can't hold on forever. Besides, his blue collor, drug addicted, hasn't-graduated-from-high-school-yet, 35 year old kid is expecting the inheritance.
Yeap, sucks. But, tis life.
Don't worry, I will just fly circles around the world and turn back time so we can fix things.

key-low: relax on the blind negativity. your comments on "billionaires" and reducing golf to "hitting a ball with a stick" are roughly equivalent to calling all who enjoy surfing "do-nothing bums" who just "stand on a board". There's fun and nuance in almost all sports (I've even been known to enjoy bowling and bocce, with the right crowd.)
anyway, that's all for me today. hope everyone has a good day and that the surf comes up a bit (i'd love to make a few drops before september).

Posted by: Onanistic Bonobo at July 28, 2004 11:32 AMfunny that golf comes up, i played while in FL last week and couldn't help think about the similarities to surfing.
i find the physical and mental aspects of golf and surfing comparable and even complentary. they require use of some of the same muscle groups. making a drop on a wave has some similar dynamics to hitting a golf ball (though the moving target in baseball/softball makes those even more comparable). i have also found that both can leave me with a similar relaxed feeling afterward -- especially after playing an uncrowded course, alone. and the hunt for the perfect board/quiver is also comparable to the hunt for the perfect driver/putter/irons. same with the hunt for the perfect spot/wave and course/hole.
but there are obviously major problems with the practices related to golf course development & maintenance (land & water use, pesticides). add the socio-economics of golf to the mix and there is more than ample reason to avoid the "sport" altogether. i don't play more than a few times each year because of this.
the surfing world is generally more environmentally-focused, but the surf eqiupment industry is certainly subject to similar criticisms about what it leaves behind - and is in some ways more suspect given where much of the production now happens.
and surfing also has it's own troubling social dynamics -- although this blog seems to me to mitigate those a bit.
so for me there is enough similarity between these two individualistic leisure pursuits that i consider them to fall into the same category -- right along with hunting & fishing. it's a tribute to the history of surfing and it's culture/community that surfing is not often lumped into the same category as these other pursuits, but i can't deny the similarities.
Posted by: loon at July 28, 2004 11:32 AMthis photo really makes me want to surf some quality waves!! arghghgh!!

key-low - i know what you're saying about perceptions of golf culture. I too cringe at the country clubs, the big black cars, the snooty rich guys, the lame clothing, etc. But.. if you can divorce the game from the trappings and community that surround it, the game is actually pretty cool and extremely challenging. Try breaking 80 on a golf course. it's fucking hard as hell.
Posted by: e at July 28, 2004 11:34 AMWavecrest possibly on hold - red legged frog found on site....
on another rant...
The Ritz represents 25% of the city's tax base. I support the Ritz, the schools are crap in HMB and I don't mind selling out if it means that my children will have a stronger education system, and a more vibrant community from the money being spent in town.
Run-off from all the farming poses just as much threat from the golf course. I go running on the beach often south of the Ritz and I've never seen run-off from the golf course.

Posted by: bagel at July 28, 2004 12:05 PMYa, it isn't visible runoff. That's the problem. It goes into the ground and seeps into the ocean without being seen. Watersheds travel underground.
I've never understood golf or its appeal but I am oddly unsurprised by the number of surfers who dig on it despite the obvious conflicts of environmental interest. Hell, Jeff Clark used to practice drives off the top of the cliff over mavs, according to local barstool chatter.
About the Ritz and related points: there are a lot of ways to manage "selling out" or the process of compromise to get what you want. I'd rather pay higher individual taxes than permit a corporation to come in, exploit some land and subsidize the local infrastructure in return. Its a bad trade IMO. Your kids will get a better education -- okay. What kind of place are they going to be living in, though, as a result?
25% is possibly too much to have coming from anyone or any one entity. I'm hoping that diversifying the tax base in HMB is part of what the whole downtown revitalization program was/is about. If the CC can get owners to stop rolling up the sidewalks at 5pm, locals might turn more cash back into the local economy instead of spending it up in the city or over the hill.
The surf ain't happening today.
Purposefully surfed straight into the shorepound last night (boredom I guess) and wound up with sand stuck way, way up in my sinuses. Oog.

Posted by: kdalle at July 28, 2004 12:37 PMI aggree about some of the similarities about golf and surfing. Both very mental. You can have stellar days or walk away frustraited as hell or a huge smile on your face. The physical aspect of surfing vs golf is very different but in the end, surfing it self (post pop-up) is not that physical and, like golf, if your timing and overall feel is off that day then your done. In surfing the consequeses are greater.

Posted by: at July 28, 2004 12:39 PMman you know the surf sucks when we start debating golf. IMHO, speed golf is the only fun golf variety. Kinda like playing polo but from a motorized cart instead of a horse. I have family in upstate new york and all the cousins worked at a golf course for summer $$ and used to play rounds of speed golf in the early mornings, with the grass super-slick from dew. Number of strokes doesn';t matter, you just have to get the ball into the holes fastest. Note- flipping carts can be quite painful, but they are surprising resilient to serious damage.
Posted by: luke at July 28, 2004 12:43 PMI don't use traction pads on my boards. When I ride a board with a traction pad, I don't notice the difference. My rear foot never slips off the back - for me the bad take-offs have my front foot not far enough forward, usually when I am tired.
Golf.....a supreme waste of land. Until about 20 years ago, I had a 2 handicap. I played dozens of times a year, competed, worked at golf course, my brother worked at a golf course. But when you come down to it - the course was more or less a club to keep out people that rich white christian men didn't want around. And still, most of the better golf courses exist, in part, to provide rich folks with a way to play and keep out people rich white christian men would rather not have around. And there's a part of me that can't really accept being a part of that.
If you take away all that, it is a monstrous challenge of a game, full of nuance, and technique, and skill. But still a supreme waste of land. A baseball field or soccer field takes the space of a fraction of one hole, and can entertain as many people as the entire golf course! It's funny also, because golf is changing and becoming an even more economically elitist sport, as the cost of land increases. It now cost more for the rich white christian men to be members, making it an even more elite club.
When all is said and done, I'd rather spend 4 hours
1) surfing 2 hours and playing with my family
2) riding my bike for 2 hours and playing with my family
than playing golf. I get a good workout, and spend less time isolating myself from my family.
Posted by: blakestah at July 28, 2004 12:47 PMI've played golf 7 times. The last 2 times I wanted to leave by the 9th hole. I rather play pitch and putt.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at July 28, 2004 12:56 PMThe surf in HMB should def be regulated. But the town, no. The place is really a shit hole. Ever look at all the trash on HWY 1 from HMB to Montara. Ever notice all the dirty mother f'ers loitering up and down the highway. The schools suck, the people really are not that friendly. They come off as all "this is community" but they are all in their own world and walk around with scowls on their faces. The town is one big bitter, bitch fest. I say clean it up and the class the place up a bit. Heaven for bid you run into a 25 year local. They think they own the god damn place or are entitled.
Another funny thing. Holy shit, when Cuhna's store burnt down you would have thought we were in the middle of the Rapture or something. Ok, the store is awesome and is a local fixture, but for the love of god lighted up people. The place re-opened and people were on their hands and knee's. Key-low, I have to ask, when does school start up again? When it does, maybe think about wood-shop and/or home ec. as some electives, they may help you in your future.
Loon, great summary in the golf vs. surfing discussion. My golf game has suffered at the expense of my surfing but the last few weeks have provided a nice opportunity to get back out there. 4 hours in HMB @ The Ritz will do wonders when the surf sucks. It is funny how you find yourself (surfer perspective) standing on the 17th and 18th holes staring out at the breaking waves wondering if it is "surfable" as you are about to treat your little white golf ball like Mike Tyson would treat Key-Low's face had he said something like he previously did to him.
The parallels are striking.
The price of golf, especially in the Bay Area, does tend to only draw the wealthy. But, play smart, go at 5:00 when the winds are on it at OB and play 1/5 the green fees.
Also, I have to throw out that last Sunday there were 4 dudes chillin in the club house when I checked in fully sporting O'Neill gear. There are more surfers that golf then you know. Oh, and aren't all us surfers supposed to be Spicolli's?

'cept instead of using carts (motorize carts at this course? you kiddin' me?!) we would all (typically a half dozen of us or more) (1) tee off at once, (2) race to be the first to get the ball in the hole, and (3) ensure that the competition was full tackle! nothin' quite like getting tackled from the edge of the green into the bunker just before your victory shot! ; )

As a general rule of thumb, if I am feeling negative, I go find a place of solace. Try going for a surf even if it sucks. You might be amazed at how much fun you can have.
Posted by: Kaiser at July 28, 2004 01:37 PMkaiser - surfing is NOT, i repeat NOT to be done for fun. surfing is to be used for, and ONLY for, the act of proving superiority over another.

Posted by: j at July 28, 2004 01:46 PMkey-low: i still don't really get your point--if you don't like golf, don't play, but enough with the gross generalizations about elitism and racism. i play golf once in a while (1x per month), usually because some of my buddies or my dad want to play...i prefer surfing, but (luckily for everyone here) most of them don't surf. it's a fun and exceedingly challenging sport and a good way to spend time with friends.
as for the racism and elitism, you watch too much tv. i play public courses (no interest in or $$ for clubs) and run into a wide range of people from different races and economic situations. you don't have to be all that rich to pay $16 to play Lincoln Park (dawn patrol). There are a couple courses in Oakland that I play where the racial diversity in the club house is wider than any room in the bay area. I encourage you to find a "billionaire" at Sharp Park. Golfers are often times up for helping a good cause, also--I recently participated in a fundraising tournament that raised $10K+ for a local non-profit that runs programs for under-privileged kids.
lastly, if you don't like "white-bread" elitism, stop surfing--I don't know if you've checked out the lineup at Steamers lately, but it's pretty pale and not very inviting to outsiders.
all that said, i still prefer surfing. just trying to set some of the facts straight here and keep some perspective alive. sorry for the long, boring post. i'm off to wax my feet and find some slop.

"There is no truth which stupidity can't make use of."
Posted by: loon at July 28, 2004 02:08 PMnegativity is fun, especially if the wind is blowing, and you're blowing my horn.
Really, I could care less if you play golf or not, I'm just saying it's kind of a pussy sport compared to running a marathon, cycling 200 miles, swimming from santa cruz to capitola, ironmans, etc.
Shit, at least we're getting out of the "I got a 1 foot linda mar wind chop set today and mickey hooted at me" discussion that usually prevails here.
Calm down bitch.

Posted by: sf at July 28, 2004 02:18 PMgolf rules for about 2 holes. then i start to suck at it (not that i am really good at it at all) and then i start to think, geez, the green fees that my uncle paid for me to play, could have gone to klooless k. for a traction pad. and done something really positive in this little world of ours....
instead, 18 holes later, totally frustrated due to my bad skill and uber competitive nature, i just think.. gosh. if i was surfing.
try surfing.
even in crap! i tried it yesterday at LindaMAR and you know what, i had a blast despite my jaded outlook upon exiting the car to see the walls of insanity.
get happy.

My paranoia is acting up---before I wax my feet I'm gonna scan the parking area extra carefully for a camera documenting the success of your little prank.
(Next you'll tell me to wax the TOP of my board too!)
Posted by: Klooless at July 28, 2004 02:42 PMI'd rather read about knitting than golf, what's up with all this? Does anybody know any good surf spots in Big Sur besides the semi-secret spot down a steep trail from Hwy 1 that we're not supposed to name here? I was down there last weekend camping and checked a couple of places out but given the lack of swell i'm not sure I learned anything useful.

Posted by: thedonk at July 28, 2004 02:55 PMklooless - that's hilarious, re: waxing the top of your board. first time one of my snowboard buddies came out surfing i tossed him a thing of wax and told him to wax his board....few minutes later i came back and looked at his board and the top was still bare.
"you planning on waxing that?"
"what do you mean?"
*turns board over to show wax job*
sure he's not the first, but damn it was funny.

Posted by: q at July 28, 2004 03:04 PMya know what they say. seek and ye shall find, eric.
or, in the case of that region, seek and seek and seek and seek and seek.
Posted by: g at July 28, 2004 03:04 PMPimp you are a trany aren't you? If you were a 25+ year local then you would remember the pea fields across the street from your house and you would remember the stoak of being old enough to walk to Cunha's all by yourself to get a pepsi in the bottle and 3 packs of football cards for a buck. You would have gone to school with some Cunah's. HMB was special way before Mav's. I used to walk out of my house and look left and see that big blue paradise and then look to my right at some awesome mountain biking... I want my kids to experience this.... I want them to drive that 2 lane road comming into town.... Not some 4 lane wide safe BS. If you have lived in the Moon (and when I say Moon I mean the entire coastside from HMB to Montara)for over 25 years then you are entitled.
Posted by: Class of '90 at July 28, 2004 03:08 PMModular knitting, mitered squares, patchwork, domino knitting—whatever you choose to call it, this technique opens up endless possibilities for knitters. And once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll find it highly addictive — especially when you’re working with hand-dyed yarns. The way the colors and stitches interact will mesmerize you, making it practically impossible to stop.
Despite some of the obvious differences, I try to focus on the similarities between knitting and surfing. 1) You spend much of the session sitting on your butt, yet focused on the task at hand. 2) Cross-stitching is an advanced move that is best done with specialized equipment--similarly cross-stepping is a skill that takes time to acquire and is best attempted on a long-board....
Anyway, Eric...I was down in Big Sur a few weeks ago and had some fun waves at a small cove at the far south of the Big Sur area. I surfed it completely alone for about an hour one morning before 2 other guys came out--3-5 feet, kinda mushy, reminded me of Linda Mar on a good day (ie not mind-blowing, but fun), except no crowds and spectacularly beautiful!! There's a campsite directly across the street.
Posted by: can't go left at July 28, 2004 03:08 PMit's getting so you can't even make a dumb joke around here!
Posted by: thedonk at July 28, 2004 03:23 PMcan't go left, I checked that spot out, last saturday afternoon it was glassy with soft waist to chest high waves and not crowded. It was more fun than I was expecting after looking at flatness all the way down, but your Linda Mar comparison seems pretty accurate. Do you know what its like there in the winter?
Posted by: eric at July 28, 2004 03:28 PMsorry for the knitting cut and paste...slow day at the office, didn't surf in the morning, didn't run at lunch, so I've got too much bottled energy with no outlet. probably time for a self-imposed exile from this site for the day.
eric--haven't been in the winter, i've pretty much given all i know about that stretch of coast. planning to go this fall once or twice to lurk around a little. glad you had some fun while down there--the whole region around there is absolutely inspiring.
Posted by: can't go left at July 28, 2004 03:34 PMOMG - thought I 'd stay off this blog and read the sometimes witty and intelligent banter rather than participate in the writing frenzy of half wits and self proclaimed surf and literary agents.
You people ar LOSING IT!!
What is golf? And furthermore, WHO THE
**&* CARES!!!!!
HMB - is there a THERE there. Nice architecture, love the Safeway mall at Pacifilus and the Taco Hell area. What do we call it?
' Early immigrant Western WhiteTrash in Retrograde'? Very odd place this part of the coast. "Progress" has obvilously forgotten her- very strange indeed, but to locals it's probably how they like it. At least they fit into it.
Another world compared to the city I live in and no I am not being a snob. Whenever I surf there I always feel like I've been instantly transported to Pismo or
Morro Bay - eeeeeeeeeyuk.
The closest I've come to this thing called 'golf' is running away from the speeding for my head little white ball and Korean men in careening carts while checking Morey's Point.
Sandollar Beach ($5 topark - $20 to camp) is at times frequented by scores of dolphin, NOT SHARKS! Great bowl on the south end - the outside is too outside, more fun to surf the inside reforms. On the ones that close out let the current take you south and paddle or run again from there - if you try to paddle straight back out it's like trying to fight your way out of a wet golf bag. Hike to the point on the south end. There are caves, dramatic views and jade if you know where to look. In high school we would smoke and drink with our teachers out there at the caves... those were the days...
ME? I'm busy with my new remote controlled crowd control project, due out Sept 15.
Can't wait to meet all of you face to face this season; maybe at E's shindig. You all mostly know my ugly face but how ugly is yours?
P.S. This would be more fun if we had ladies on the forum but I realize that would be a breach of this here " manhood."
Lates.

Posted by: bagel at July 28, 2004 04:17 PMdon't worry vibrator, soon the coast will be one huge stretch of starbucks, barnes & nobles, and those wonderful pink "spanish style" 4-bedrooms sprouting up like poppies all over the shell beach hillside. "progress" is catching up quickly, maybe in 5 or 10 years Pismo, Morro Bay, and HMB will be sufficiently cultured for you to visit without having to say "eeeeeeeeeyuk" everytime you cast your eyes upon a trailer park, mexican farm worker, or greasy diner.

Posted by: j at July 28, 2004 04:54 PMGolf is boring b/c ALL of the players are the most lame, most boring, most cleancut people in sports. There needs to be more John "drink booze until 3am, sleep in the car in the parking lot and tee off at 6am" Daly's in the game of golf.
NO surf down here again but like someone said on this board today, coming in from going out this morning made me feel happy and you wouldn't have known it by my face that it was heel high.
And shout out to Howlin' Wolf for postin' yesterday!
Posted by: HermosA at July 28, 2004 05:01 PMbbr: Picture me hugging myself. Can we make it Pete's instead of Starbucks?! Blue tile roofs, maticulously manicured lawns, (cared for by same said newly arrived Mexican National peasants) smoother, wider roads, Victorian facades, more cops... great.
Sorry - AGAIN. I was wrong to 'dis the San Mateo - Silicon coast.
It has its beauty and maybe one day after we are all dead and gone it will be that as described by bbr; that area like the Sunset District defy logic when it comes to viable expanison of commerce. Must be the weather.
6-8sets of 16: Focused on WHAT?
Vogue is vague ?- ok - whatever.
YOU HAVE CONFUSED ME.
Thanks.
Surfed up at 'The Hole' last night - going again now- off N to K for now; regurgitated red tide hight tide shore dump - took a big swallow and almost barfed - hella fun on the old longboard.
Gotta go even in these heinous conditions.
