I hear you on the life thing. Sometimes when things are kicking great it's tough to realize it, and on the flipside when times are tough it's the little things that make you laugh. It's like OB. Those feathering offshore days can be tough due to crowds and rips, and the junky solo days can be alltime. Anyone ever surf on Lanai this time of year? I think it's more of a winter spot.

sick es-335 E, still trying to get my hands on one of those. have the es-135 with P-100s, just not the same as the humbuckers. probably put the 135 up at Panhandle soon and try my hand at getting a 335 or something. Noticed the 137's are pretty sweet too.

Hello from ZA... Been surfing Jeffry's, the wave as I'm sure you can all imagine or know is unreal, best wave by far I've surfed, soo fast, perfect, drop in take a high line and feel the speed that all your hero's do. SHIT!! I've never been this bummed to leave a spot. Anyhow, off to Maldives manana meeting up with Mark Alfaro. Namibia was a dream, ancient people, animals, and me alone with 100000 seals on a perfect triple left point, a little scary but perty sick. Hope everyone is surfing and remember Bush is an Arsehole....

caught a baker's mini-dozen on my log as the sun set over lake patheticaca last night. went home grinning from ear to ear. one wave was especially memorable -- i had found my way to the slot and was delighted enough with my position and the increasing speed, when suddenly i became aware of a strange noise. i looked down and back toward the noise and noticed the water flowing off the back of my tail was getting sucked up an into the tiny hollow of the wave, which was breaking just a few inches behind the tail. the sound of the rail cutting thru the wave and the water coming off the tail was actually getting enveloped by the sound of the mini-barrel as crested. nice.

anyways, get over the back thing man, you couldn't have picked a better time to be sitting on the sidelines...i spoke to king neptune last nite and he said he's gonna wait til your back is better before he sends us any swell, so you're golden.

i trunked it at baja malibu on saturday. it was pretty cold.

i saw that pettibone piece and a bunch more of his twisted drawings at his exhibition at (i believe) LACMA. his covers were the best thing about black flag albums.

European scene

I laid myself off today and last week I learned that Rocky (our Golden Retriever) has lymphatic cancer. All I need is a pick-up truck with a blown head gasket and I'd have a country western song that E could record and make a million bucks.

So that's all horrible? Turns out there's chemotherapy for dogs. The success rate is very high and they don't suffer the human side effects. So Rocky is eating like Rocky and starting to look better. And there are other job in my classification at the place I work, so my layoff probably just means a 2-3 week vacation. And, my new phish is almost done. So now if Dr. Blakestah will bring us some swells for early September life could be perfect. Oh, we need Ethan to get better so I can get some new photographs of him ripping.

So hang in there E. Make music, chase girls, get drunk and howl at the moon. Your bum back will be a not-so-fond memory before you know it. Think about it, homie, this is the BEST time to be out of the water.

Trying to surf bowls got me sent back to the mainland.

Hey Lizard - sorry to hear about your pooch. Long story short, Goldens suffer a high rate of lymphoma. Chemo works well as long as the doggy can take getting stuck with needles on a regular basis. His hair will thin out a little. Make sure you feed him lots early on, too. I guess the drugs end up making a lot of dog food taste bad, so he may not want to eat. Our guy ended up with a lot of people food supplements to his diet. I think he ended up eating better than I did!

The Veterinary Oncology Dept at UC-Davis set my pooch up with a treatment program that ended up keeping the big lug alive for 5 years longer than he was supposed to go. Hope you have the same results!!

I can read your opening comment intwo ways. One with more empathy than the other. I am really trying to be more open and and taking a light approach to my surfing as well as life, but I am slightly salty and bitter about many things. Usually as you know and share there are waves to sooth ( yes I cant spell, but...:))the pain and hardship that comprises a small part of our lives. Even though I scored tons of wave progressing my surfing ability and world prespective forward, I still feel something lacking and feeting.

I dont know you well but I sincerely feel that you have no grounds for sorrow. Like myself despite the mariad of vacum around us you find the positive and disregard the rest. I try but when I read your post I am at the same time feeling you and disregarding you. Yes I suck and may present some contradiction but it is what it is. I have enjoyed this blog and all that it has given to the weak community that is sf surf, but I cant take it any longer and just aint gonna read it no more. I just want the delusion to end. Mine as well as yours. Ive said it before WE ARE FORTUNATE TO DO AS WE DO. Your a good guy and I hope your journey and its process continues.

Pez - i agree that we are extremely fortunate to have the leisure/health/ability/wealth/knowledge/desire to surf and play in the ocean. We're ridiculously lucky.

I'm not sure exactly how my opening comments irked you but i'm sorry if they did. Usually i try to keep it positive but sometimes i'm just bummed at myself and bummed at the world, and even though i know i have it made (in relation to many people who have fucked-up lives) i still feel shitty about things.

A gale in the near Gulf of Alaska will bring in 6 ft 10-12 sec of swell from 295 degrees on Saturday morning. This swell will run through the weekend, overhead and rideable on Saturday, and head high and rideable on Sunday. Both days will be kinda sloppy/closeout-y, but rideable. Rejoice, for surf is coming. Or so it looks now. 28 days till September.

I think it'll actually bring a little bit bigger swell.. Another one is following it. Anyway, at least it will clear the lineup of all the kooks!.. Wait.. I won't be out there either.. I wish Summer was longer with more 2 ft Souths... :(
