Feeble n’ fun

Not too much juice but the winds are mellow. Some strange weather this morning as it was dark, overcast and brooding at my house on 45th avenue. It was windy while walking down to the beach. But, while standing on the playa looking at the waves, it wasn’t that blustery. A huge swath of clear, sunny sky hung over the ocean, seemingly a few hundred yards from land. Rays of sunshine beamed down on unsuspecting oil tankers and carrier ships making their way to and from the golden gate. A pod of orcas leapt out of the water, spinning and gyrating in the air as the sun glittered off their slick, svelte skin. They leapt and landed in a pattern that I soon discerned as Beethoven’s fifth symphony. The orcas somehow discovered a way to derive differing tones when their bodies contacted the water after leaping toward the sky. They jammed all the way down the beach.. first Beethoven, then some Wagner, then the unmistakable baseline to Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused." I was mesmerized and inspired. Fantastic!

The sea surface looked pretty smooth. Small windswell waves lapped onto the inside sandbars of OB. I noticed a semi-zippy, partially-glassy corner section every few minutes. Good longboard conditions as the waves appeared small and slow. A few takers in the middle of the beach and few up at VFers. I saw one dood near Santiago snag a slow-motion, putt-putt down-the-line ride. Looked pretty enjoyable.

Here’s the raging south swell down in southern California... but at least it's glassy!

I am drying up in this cube.

Stoked someone actually got the JJ Cale from yesterday, he is a fairly secretive dude.

Now i know what OB is really missing, huge jetties and oil platforms to go along with the polluted water and school bus sized whiteys.

Blakestah, never heard of Tutti from Toes....

Thanks for droppin' some bouy knowledge yesterday.

Seems like that swell coming up the coast about 50 miles offshore just laughing and taunting us as she goes by. Sucks.

i have gone to renting longboards since I am 180 pounds.

man-rule #7,523: when the tops of the waves are lower than your balls, you may ride a longboard without humiliation or depression.

Nice looking lefts in so-cal. Hopefully coming up here.

I busted out the longboard for the first time in 2 years on Sunday and had an absolute blast. Fun cruising and so mellow to be gliding along on the small waves without having to pump like a madman.

That being said, hopefully the longboard is back on the rack for another 2 years.

Posted by: honu at August 17, 2004 11:25 AM

Details for kookdom: FUN!!! I took my funboard, which was probably ideal, but people were smiling on shortboards and longboards too. nothing huge, but not tiny like yesterday.

Posted by: Klooless at August 17, 2004 11:32 AM

Most who worry about the longboard can't surf.

Ride it all.

Make the small board go in gutless.
Make the longboard go in throwing quick hitters.

And then usually those types of surfers never discuss equipment.

Posted by: notalongboarder at August 17, 2004 11:32 AM

thanks klooless, I think it is time for a long lunch in order to get my skin back to normal salt levels.

Posted by: kookdom at August 17, 2004 11:33 AM

OB is currently rather foggy w/accompanying foggish onshores - not too bad though - and 2- very optimistic 5 foot waves...and either it's extra fickle or I DOUSED myself in %*#@ing Wave Repellent™...AUUUGH...worst infestation I've had in a while. Klooless was rippin' it up so he can either confirm or deny the WR™ factor. Putt putt rides interspersed w/shoulder high steep stuff that appears deeper and only your head ;P Fighting the current today is an exercise in utility. Spare your arms and go with the flow, unlike your kooky surf researcher here. Eyes to low tide if the wind stays off. Happy hunting,

Longboarding is cool. If you can't do it - don't.
Good. Right. Put it away forever. Please!
I've seen some of you (collective [YOU] ) on a longboards and it is not pretty. For all your talk neither are your shortboarding gyrations anything truely inspiring to watch.
There were guys in Hawaii who would ride longboards at Sunset. Gnarly Sunset taking off behind the peaks and bowls and charging - you'd see one guy drop down and fade hard into the angled pit and you're thinking ' no fucking way - no way is this guy...%$^*!' and then he'd all too simply turn upwards up the face and snap it right into the barrell - then speeding down the line to meet the inside section - jamming. At least as fun to watch as amateur porn. All over the North Shore - longboarding madmen in hell waves making
it look easy AND stylish.
Not that I am big fan of the egotestical ass kissing T-MO Campbell and his ilk but his films do provide good examples of
style purity.

Go on if you want - bash the longboarding.
You have no soul.

Swell is showing at Oyster Point. Its glassy too. Take 101 south from the city. Right past the good guys building, take the new overcrossing of Oyster Point. Head due east to the inlet of the bay. Once by the marina, check for the breaking action. Try to find an uncrowded peak though as the lot is filling up fast.

Posted by: Kaiser at August 17, 2004 12:12 PM

I will never understand the longboard vs. shortboard nonsense. Peeps can charge around in a giant rubber ducky for all I care. Actually that sounds kind of fun.

Posted by: Grand Ave Pimp at August 17, 2004 12:31 PM

SF has some very experienced watermen that ride longboards exclusively. Sean the lifegaurd comes to mind. He rips. Late takeoffs and all. Some other folks that have been around for awhile too. Tom on his 11' homemade board does spinners (kinda kooky looking but it's his thing) on 15' faces - leashless and I've never seen him lose his board. I've seen him do it on takesoffs.

I like the idea of riding everything, but mostly I enjoy shortbard type riding.

I might be moving to the "Highway" in Sept. Front row seats are the best.

Longboards and lonboarder's suck. I hate it when they:
a. Drop in behind the peak and make it.
b. Paddle to the inside of me then make the critical section in my face.
c. Sit way outside the zone on the outers and then ride the reform all the way through and past me - hate that.
d. Hate the board in pro sac out the back of the truck thing.

Signed,

we now return you to your summer surf depression soundtrack:

Fool enough to almost be it
Cool enough to not quite see it
Doomed
Pick your pockets full of sorrow
And run away with me tomorrow
June

We'll try and ease the pain
But somehow we'll feel the same
Well, no one knows
Where our secrets go

I send a heart to all my dearies
When your life is so, so dreary
Dream
I'm rumored to the straight and narrow
While the harlots of my perils
Scream

And I fail
But when I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will

Mother weep the years I'm missing
All our time can't be given
Back
Shut my mouth and strike the demons
That cursed you and your reasons
Out of hand and out of season
Out of love and out of feeling
So bad

When I can, I will
Words defy the plans
When I can, I will

Fool enough to almost be it
And cool enough to not quite see it
And old enough to always feel this
Always old, I'll always feel this

No more promise no more sorrow
No longer will I follow
Can anybody hear me
I just want to be me
When I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will

Aug 17 early. S swell 2 ft 20 sec 170-180 deg. This will likely be the only evidence we have of this south, as the energy appears to be dropping in SoCal already, and the angle shifting more easterly. But, we hit 2 ft - whoopee! Get some of that at our most exposed S swell spots.
