Waves!

The waves are back! Yesterday afternoon a new windswell made its way into our area. There might also be traces of the south swell every 10 minutes or so? Surfed yesterday arvo and then the dawnie this morning. Allz I have to say is that it’s nice to surf some chunky waves again! Bagel, Kaiser Roll and myself nugged then looked for nugs out in the refreshingly-thumping head-high wave playground. I got out there a few minutes before Bagel and watched a bunch of glassy, steep A-frames seductively peel all around me… but I couldn’t track one down… The instant that Bagel makes it out to the lineup a solid right rears up for him and he spins and takes off.. then carves one off the top.. Stylee. I think it might have been his first wave in a month or something? Nice one! I proceed to surf about as shitty as I can remember surfing.. even though the waves were righteous. Caught a few racy rights and had a chance to pull this semi-huge lip-hit but I bailed after hitting the lip instead of trying to air-drop down with the crashing wave and land in the flats I just jumped off my board and dove into the maelstrom of white-water. Would have been sick if I’d made it but the wimp in me warned of potential leg-breakage so I bailed it.. Kaiser Sose nabbed a nice backside ride and flew past Bagel and I on his new Hobie egg-board.. the Superman looked pretty smooth and kind-of rode up high on the wall and then back down to the bottom of the wave.. he was moving pretty fast. After a few more face-plants and other uber-kook-outs I ended up trading boards with my friend Brett and got to try his new 5’10” Manny fish. 4 wooden fins, huge swallow tail. Yum Yum Yellow. The thing is beautiful.. and I proceeded to biff it about 4 more times before I finally tracked into a conical right that whipped me along purdy nice. The fish felt small but it paddled well and felt good under my feet on that one ride. It took me a few waves to get used to how short it was. I placed my rear foot way too far back a few times.. not used to the sub 6foot boards. It was nice to surf on a peak filled totally with friends. Waves were hooted, wipeouts encouraged, unmakeable drops celebrated. I also got caught inside multiple times and probably did about 3000 duckdives yesterday. D’oh!

This morning things were a bit glassier.. Lerm and I paddled out all by our lonesome and had a pleasurable sesh. Same peaky, head-high windswell. A few mini-bombs. A few shallow sandbars that caused waves to suck and buckle, barrel and hammer. Pretty strong north-bound current. Lerm surfed really well on his chippy fish. He carved a few cutties on his frontside. A few drops were fun for me and I lined up one speedy lip-bash on my backside. Some sweet sweet sections were on offer. A good surfer could have done some serious damage out there this morning as the juicy was dripping and the shred potential high.

Anyway!! Surf!!! Fucking yeah!!

Robme was kind enough to forward me some pics sent to him by goodmorning

Goodmorning in high-school about to kill himself at Sandy Beach

Sorry everyone but I had to double dip yesterday.

Did the lunch thing then took the dog to the beach after work only to witness some clean A-frames coming through and lots of peeps enjoying it. Raced home, grabbed the wet wettie and board and raced back, did the sunset surf till 8:30 and it was so great.

Did one huge top turn and it felt so good I had to let out a little yelp.

Posted by: kookdom at August 18, 2004 10:34 AM

i tried out the blakestah rfs this morning and i'm impressed. i had my doubts: the fin looks like a tongue and i've been surfing a really wide short fish regularly, so i wasn't sure about the chippy squash tail 6'3" board. but it was fun! it really does wing you around with some addt'l velocity off the turns, but also holds well in the steep pocket and down the line. can't wait to try it in optimal conditions. where i was on the beach it was pretty warbly/shifty/mushy with only the occasional reeling line. not that i'm complaining. waves

Posted by: steamwand at August 18, 2004 10:35 AM

Glad you caught some fun, Ethan! I had the worst session in weeks this morning 8-9:30. I blame the waves for choosing to give good rides to all the other sufers instead of me. I just didn't have the strength or the guts or the smarts to paddle to the right places and into the right waves. Couple that with some frustrating paddles-out, and it had me daydreaming of log-gliding at the boatdocks.

Posted by: Klooless at August 18, 2004 10:36 AM

thx e! great to see you dropping into some bombs. i sooo needed that. what a great morning. hopefully it will hold until tomorrow.

glad to hear you all got some too!

letter from mark massara about the Hearst Ranch Deal.. (keep in mind that many concerned coastal activists such as G may hold differing opinions)

Dear Coastal Advocate,

Because we are a team, standing up to developers and others that seek to
exploit our coast, I will always share with you not only our victories but
also our losses. And, unfortunately for those who love California's
central coast, and all of us who care about coastal protection, last
Thursday we had a setback in our efforts to improve the deal for the
Hearst Ranch in San Luis Obispo County.

While we remain committed to making this deal worth the $95 million the
public is being asked to pay, last week the Wildlife Conservation Board
rejected our appeal that they delay this deal until the Hearst Corporation
releases their habitat protection plans and informs the people of
California what they are really paying for. The board did admit that they
share some of our concerns and put conditions on the deal, but their
decision allows this bad deal to move onward to September 15th when the
State Coastal Conservancy meets in Napa.

We may not have convinced Governor Schwarzenegger to intervene on the
Wildlife Conservation Board's desision, but many others share our belief
that this deal MUST BE IMPROVED! The murky aspects of this deal convinced
nine state legislators to sign a letter urging a delay. The Coastal
Commission and another state agency, the Legislative Analysts Office, also
both weighed in on the deal’s troubling aspects. Representatives of
Sierra Club were joined in Sacramento by NRDC, Defenders of Wildlife,
Audubon Society, Surfrider, CoastWalk, California League of Conservation
Voters, California Native Plant Society, Environmental Defense Center,
Friends of the Ranchland and EcoSLO. And Great Coastal Places members
sent in more than 1,300 postcards and 450 letters and succeeded in getting
40 letters to the editor published, all of which we delivered at the
hearing.

It is important that we fix the Hearst deal, not only for the people of
the central coast but for those of us who fight for conservation of all
our great coastal places. STATEWIDE, THIS DEAL SETS A PRECEDENT FOR
FUTURE CONSERVATION DEALS THAT WILL MAKE PRESERVING OPEN SPACE COST MORE
MONEY AND GIVE THE PUBLIC LESS LAND! Already we are seeing land
protection deals that looked secure; disappear as land owners decide that
they want as much as Hearst is getting. I am afraid that the "Hearst
Standard" could become the norm for the future of land conservation in
California. This means more deals that keep the public out, build mansions
to sell, allow mining and drilling and still give landowners a big check
from the state.

ON SEPTEMBER 15TH IN NAPA, THE STATE COASTAL CONSERVANCY WILL HAVE THE
FINAL SAY ON THE COASTAL PART OF THIS DEAL. We can count on the Hearst
Corporation bringing another big busload of people and paying for nice
hotels for them to stay in. And we can count on Hearst to continue to try
and distort the views of every legitimate local and statewide
environmental group. But this network stands united for the coast and for
future generation’s right to enjoy the great coastal places we all
treasure. I will be in touch soon.

Mark

surfed further south then you guys. got a bakers dozen of set waves amongst a few other heads. suddenly, i must have caught what you had last night E. as i botch 3 set waves in a row and strike myself out. most nooks and crannies had folks on it.

ahhhhh waves, thank you meterological forces!

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at August 18, 2004 10:54 AM

split a peak with Theo while the masses crowded together up the beach....

A few joined us but we were on every settie so it was all good in the hood 'til dark.

Posted by: tomstah at August 18, 2004 10:55 AM

I am really relieved that they (SC) are trying to improve the deal instead of stop it, at this point. If it can be improved, more power to 'em.

While $95M is a lot of money any way ya look at it, fact is the land valuation (sans easement) is significantly higher than that, so it is somewhat of a good deal on that basis, anyway.

Surf looks so-so. Damn winds...

Posted by: g at August 18, 2004 10:59 AM

Klooless, where you sat today there is a BIG RIPPY HOLE. DON'T SURF THERE. Go a half block in either direction. This may change in a few weeks, but for a while now, that is just a black hole. Today the current was sucking into it, too. Narsty, I did a lot of paddling to stay away.

Posted by: blakestah at August 18, 2004 11:08 AM

blakestah.. is any of this the south? seems like it's all windswell.. but.. dunno... SF buoy showing some long period.

Posted by: e at August 18, 2004 11:09 AM

OB: yup the waves are there but the wind and Random Factor has cranked up. 3-5ish and all shapes, sizes, speeds, mush, crunch, whitewater...surfable with an increasing ass-kick factor the farther one lies down the kook spectrum. A scant few peeps out...some doing fine, some not!

J: I lost your email, are you heading up near Portland way one of these days? Thinking of heading up to see pals but sick of that long drive!

my neck hurts. gotta love being caught inside when its 3 feet. just what i needed. kaiser was getting all the waves and this other bearded guy on a fish. i saw e get a couple good rights too. forgot to wear my earplugs and i brought a little bit of ob to work via my head.

goodmorning, you crazy. did you go to the hospital after that?

Morning meetings over and I am on the way to find some High tide fun. I think you know where. Looks like the feather fastback will be in the water!

Yay.

Damn, here is the niceness...

Funny how when it turns on for like one second, the meager talks of politics, bad board experiences, broken in cars, and all the other crap seem to just go away!

I like it.

As I also liked last night and this morning. Fuck, these winds have me quessing though. Blowing full on at the beach but you could never tell by the sea surface. Even this morning when I got up I thought there was no way OB was surfable, but then.... Good to get some waves in with some juice. I mentioned to CK this morning that I haven't expelled as much energy as I have in the last 2 days at OB in a long time. OB just kicks your ass. No wonder I love like 10 pounds by mid-winter.

Good fun last night. Good fun this morning. Not a bad vibe within ear-shot. Topped it off with the donut and coffee on the way to work. Just surf-sobbering up now with shoulders still burning!

Hope y'all got some. 3to5, give me da goods via email

Posted by: Kaiser at August 18, 2004 11:39 AM

yay. surf.
i put in at 8pm last night, single fin fastback style, no leash! caught 3 late night sliders and ran back in as it was dusk. kaiser & bagels? were you out that late too? i was a bit south of 2 dudes right as the light was going out... anyway, post surf, jammed up the road and picked up a RFS from blakestah! hot dog!

set em up and slack'em jack'em.

Posted by: elias at August 18, 2004 11:58 AM

any chance that windswell will hit down in LA?

nothing. absolutely nothing last night or dawnie.

Posted by: Hb at August 18, 2004 12:00 PM

Hb, I guess that is the trade-off. You get girls in bikinis at your beach. We get good-size windswell.

So days, I can't decide which is better.....

Posted by: Kaiser at August 18, 2004 12:04 PM

The angle seems wrong for the south to impact OB.

We are seeing some long period (14 sec) NW from 300 deg though at around 2 ft of swell.

I thought, in January, when I had 25 RFS units made, that I'd probably have a dozen leftover forever. There are now 4 left and I gotta get more done...

Posted by: blakestah at August 18, 2004 12:06 PM

ahhh....finally gettin' 'round to checking the site. as has been mentioned, nice little with Kasier and Korewin this dp. by the sounds of it, conditions weren't quite as good as last night (swell fading already?), but there were still some tasty ones on offer. scored a few racy ones, but also got my ass handed to me a couple of times trying to go for late drops that just don't play (at least not for me) when it's more than wimpy summer-time slurf. Korewin caught some smooth ones and cranked spray off the top. Kaiser scored a high wave-count on his retro-egg and made sections that i thought fo'shur had pummelled him. speedy for certain! sooo good to feel a little juice...though it's a humbling reminder that my shoulders got some toughening up to do before winter!

Posted by: ck at August 18, 2004 12:19 PM

Kaiser, you're wrong - there ARE girls in bikinis in NorCal, they're just hidden under 4 mm of neoprene. Maybe they should be worn *over* the wetsuits instead. Hm.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at August 18, 2004 12:29 PM

Howdy E. Just a huge thanks for this here site; I read it every day and the spirit amongst you fellows is super encouraging you know? I've been surfing all my life and after 28 years it's still that one thing that's just a bit more important than everything else. It's nice to know that there's others that can relate and are, umm, intelligent? Creative?
Question for Blakestah: I'm headed to Mainland on Friday for 10 days (Zihua) and am trying to suss out the swell potential. Stormsurf says it's shutting down in the South pacific, yet when I look at the WAM 145 hr forecast models there's heaps of activity off the tip of Chile and West of there. Are those swells that don't hit the mainland, and what's the best way to research swell activity for Guererro/Michocoan? Thanks advance. Thanks all the way around.......can I post a jpeg on here?
Sweet bowls this am.
Off to Sloat for the arvo.......

Posted by: maynard at August 18, 2004 12:32 PM

Aye, SS, I stand corrected! I failed to consider the "neoprene" cover.

CK, gotta admit, you did take the award for "most committed" this morning. Finalist for the "best yard sale" as well.

Posted by: Kaiser at August 18, 2004 12:37 PM

hey...if you aren't takin' off a good couple of feet too deep on at least a few waves ya just ain't tryin'! ; )

Posted by: ck at August 18, 2004 12:47 PM

ck...

couple of feet too deep? as i looked over that lip
it looked to be almost two YARDS too deep
BUT most impressive.

ck gets the sac award for the day.

anyone for the arvo?

Posted by: korewin at August 18, 2004 12:53 PM

sounds like everyone had a good slurf. I actually managed to get some as well up here in the northern parts. Some fun chunky, warbly windswell was on order. Place I was at seemed to be jacking a little bit. I have one vivid image in my head of watching the bottom fall out as I tried desperately to scratch in to this chest high monster. I think I might have given ck a run for the yard sale award. Made a few and had a damn good time. My only complaint is that I am soooo friggin out of shape and sluggish...need to surf more!!!!

Posted by: jdz at August 18, 2004 12:59 PM

sounds like I need to surf with ck...when was the last time we surfed together, last winter. Oh, I almost forgot, i had another kid! I can see the time window starting to open up a little bit. I think i can see the light at the end of the tunnel...i think i can...i think i can.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at August 18, 2004 01:16 PM

The best way to assess swell potential is emailing me or Mark Sponsler. Other than that, check the available online info.

I didn't see anything big in the near future from the S. Pacific, except stuff not exposed past Peru (too far east to be of any good to anyplace else).

Bali has been getting swell after swell after swell this year, again.

Posted by: blakestah at August 18, 2004 01:28 PM

hmmm...korewin, attributing it to sac as opposed to poor judgement is most gracious!

jdz...good to hear that you got wet! it has been too long. gimme a shout one of the days and we'll link up for a yard-sale comp!

I'm missing this swell but I halfway don't mind. Been so damn busy making changes in my life. I am now a woman. Just kidding. Last Saturday I put my truck up for sale in the am and sold it by pm for exactly the amount I asked for... go figure.

Next day (Sunday)my wife and I were driving to deposit the check we received for the truck and noticed a house for rent on Great Highway. We stopped, looked, call property manager, inspected and tonight we sign lease!

Last night I looked at a 95 Jeep Cherokee that was in very nice condition. It was priced kinda low for the package but she came down even more to my price. Bought it!

Got a little bit of funds left over to buy a shortboard. Life doesn't get much better.

Did two sessions today. Pretty fun for summer this morning... HAMMERING shore pound at lunch. Lots of chances to do the "Sandy Beach" thang. Never so happy to surf some marginal windswell. Again, no signs of south down here.

Posted by: dano at August 18, 2004 02:45 PM

Mal Pais is my most favorite memory of a 30 day surf trip along the Pacific Coast of CR. DOH day and the only board I had was a 9'0" Walden magic model epoxy. Paddled out to the quizzical look of all other surfers, wondering what I was doing on a longboard. Luckily my buddy Sapphire also paddled out on his 9'0" Bonga epoxy. I sat waiting and watching the rights while he sat and watched for lefts. After about 45 mins of focus getting into the zone I dropped into a mackin set wave, streaked across and zipped into shore heart thumping. I turned around and sapphire was on the next wave streaking the left. Nothing like a good Mal Pais wave to highlight a trip to CR.

pops just called me from 56th st newport at his fams place right on the sand there. said it's going off, full on red flag action, lifeguard boat pulling poor souls out left and right. he also said that the swell is coming in at a serious angle, pushing the rips down beach so you either go into the jetty or around it.

him and my mom took the bikes down to the wedge earlier today and he said it was 20 foot + every ten minutes or so. he took some pics that I will try and post next week.

Question for forecast heads: if I drove down on friday I would probably get skunked on this swell yes?

surf in sf! alright! great to pop on and catch all the stoke from you guys. juicy head high windswell sounds awesome! glad to see that niceness is all about scoring waves and sharing great times once again, and those of us without waves can surf vicariously through e's descriptions. hit that lip! way to charge, ck and jdz.

so a little east coast update: charley destroyed florida and gave no waves to the east coast, danielle is sexy but toooo far offshore, and earl is dead, so hurricane season is idle. regarding the pharewell phestival: saying goodbye to this little hippie's favorite band was worth spending 30 hours in the car to get to the festie... We raged the 20 hours in traffic, always a fun time... it's a sweet setup to skate on all these highways that are shutdown... drinking Fat Tire and bombing hills... We were 1/4 mi. from getting turned away, but got inside w/o hiking... Musically? Kinda beat. I used to have Trey hero-worship, and e's comments in the last few weeks made me approach the shows with renewed love and respect for him... but i've never seen him SO fucked up on drugs and blatantly not playing his parts. he just did NOT play anything on Stash!!! as well as skipping lots of other parts like in the wedge, simple, curtain and gnarled guyute. oh well, that made it easier to say Goodbye, and one more weekend with old phriends and the very positive phish community was as sweet as ever... adieu phish... the summer was a good celebration of what they achieved... and... the Biscuits play nyc in two weeks!

a question: i saw the thread the last few days about surfing southern france and the north coast of spain... crazy vibes for that to come up cause I wanted to ask this before the thread started: Anyone surfed there recently, i.e. after the Prestige? How is the oil situation these days? From what I understood, last fall oil was still regularly washing ashore during onshore winds, but the surf was open and surfers were hitting it. I figure Galicia must still be pretty fucked, but closer to France, like San Sebastian maybe is ok? Or is Portugal the much cleaner, better call to emphasize on a trip this fall? Want to come bbr? We have the same dream trip.

Alright surfing heads... enjoy what you got... hit that shit, and keep sharing the stoke.

Heard the same thing about Trey, totally wasted and just not playing how he should for the final shows. Too bad cause he is a ripper and I am not into Phish at all. Did see him with Dave and Friends at Oakland a while back, smoking show. Any band that plays the band, is a serious band.

Back from aforementioned high tide spot & there were waves! Nothing great, but shoulder high with some guts and occasionally a real shoulder. Thank you Jebus. (on the way back I saw a "What Would Jesus Bomb" sticker. Funny!)

As for growing up at Sandys, that is a yes. Mine (once I got one) was the blue Datsun 710 wagon covered with stickers. Hah hah. For real. And yes, Baker beach is a legit body whomp spot- I have tested it and been whomped. Hard to stay in long though- cold.

Perhaps see you at OB early tomorrow? Got a lot of work but gotta surf too. Dilemma!

goodmorning, where did you go to school? When did you graduate high school?

Posted by: Ian at August 18, 2004 04:51 PM

waves...rides...waves...humility. surfed last night and caught some fun ones (with about 100 of my best friends). crowded as it was, still managed to catch plenty and even give a few away. some very near collisons in the water though--prime situation with warbly conditions, tons of people and more size than we've seen in a while. first time i'd been caught inside in months--humility is good, i suppose.

baker beach in the winter is a really heavy whomping spot. went out a couple winters ago with a 2 buddies after watching washing machine conditions at OB turn back 5 or 6 paddlers. decided to hit baker beach for some of the juice. 1 guy was a bodyboarder, so we had 2 fins between the 3 of us. got to the beach and found mashing walls (maybe 6 feet) exploding on that gravelly ledge. we were in the water about 30 minutes, each of us dropped into a several pits for the moment of hollow glory before the massive beat-down came. best workout it'd had in a while. took a few days to get the gravel out of the orifices and crevices. it's no wedge, but if you're looking for a beating (short rides, thick barrels, lots of time pinned to sand in 3 ft of water), baker beach will fill the bill.

Ian-

Late post as I am back at work to make up for the mid-day session. I am an Iolani boy ('87) went straight through and lived on campus- my folks were teachers. So as much as I was at Sandys, I was also on the South Shore- learned on Sammy Steamboat's big red rental boards, paddled the rental canoes in Summer Fun. Skated tons, real hard life, trying to figure out how to go back....

To work....

"YOUR ALL KOOKS!!! YOU WILL BE @ "LINDY" TWO MONTHS FROM NOW!!! STOP PLAYIN YOURSELVES
FRIGGIN KOOKS!"

Come on man don't downplay linda mar. I'd rather have them there than here. These are trend driven people, not trend setters like yourself and if they think linda mar isn't cool anymore they're going to paddle out where I am.

I wouldn't mind it, but they tend to take off on the shoulders and get stuck inside the take off zone. Linda Mar's cool. The place is actually one of the most consistant spots as it doesn't break right on shore when small and is protected from winds and huge swells. Add to it parking, toilets, showers and the skatepark which is under construction right now. It's cool dude.

usually the guys who make fun of other surf spots like lindy suck.

most of the rippers i know, they never talk about lindy. they are too busy hunting good waves and ripping them to worry about where anyone else surfs.

its the classic college freshman...all of a sudden high school sucks?
