Diminishing swell, still fun. Red tide?
Good times out in the drink this morning. The therapeutic windswell we’ve enjoyed the last few days is dwindling.. fading. There wasn’t much wind this morning but that didn’t correlate with a glassy sea-surface. I’d say yesterday morning was bigger and a tad smoother. However, today was pretty relaxing out there. Great conditions for a chill, no-frills session with your friend or by your lonesome or whatever. Nobody around for miles, fast waist/shoulder-high peaks coming in every few minutes. Lerm scored a handful of racy lefts. He pumped along a fast-track wall or two or three. I scored a nuggy or two, nothing crazy. I managed to hold some speed during one ride and arced a feel-good carve into the face of the section as the wave slowed down. That felt nice. Also enjoyed some cool views of semi-glassy, rampy walls stretching out ahead of me as I dropped in and pointed down the line. That’s always nice. Many curious seals in the water. I abruptly stopped paddling at one point because one the lil’ guys popped up right in front of me and stared me down for a few seconds.. then he dove back down. I wonder what he was thinking? Soo.. yeah.. another energizing session in mamma ocean. Can’t complain.
Blakestah is getting all jazzed on this groundswell due next week.. 3ft 14seconds are my favorite numbers at OB so hopefully that sucka will pan out just like the ‘Stah says. That would be hella wicked sick!
also.. either there is red tide happening right now or the water is really really dirty.
Shout out to all the ladies out there! Seriously! I don’t know exactly what it is but the SF ladies are so so so fine! Whether you’re the funky Indie girl with the low-cut, ¾ length Ben Davis pants/ huge belt buckle/librarian glasses/ankle tattoo/Maude hair-cut with faint blue highlights or you’re the slightly subversive down-town corporate hottie with the business-suit/fast walk/pumps/bright smile or you’re the low-key/demure/shy girl with freckles and green eyes who wears running shoes and baggy pants and a little flower pin on your stylee jean-jacket and you talk with a slight lisp to your friend as you laugh and enjoy life. Thank you!!! You seriously bring happiness to all us duh-duh, unsophisticated, unrefined boys! Thank you ladies!!!

Posted by: j at August 20, 2004 10:31 AMman, that water this morning was soo clean. I felt like i was in fiji or some shite like that..NOT. but at least there were some little waves to make up for the black tide water. got a couple, kooked on a few and for the most part enjoyed myself, even though the lineup went from two of us out to about 10 in like 15minutes.
ah well, 3ft@ 14 looks like a good time to be alive. assuming the winds cooperate.
Posted by: elias at August 20, 2004 10:32 AMNorth Shore Forecast:
Surf should be on the rise during the wee hours Monday morning with long period forerunners of 16-18 seconds. The swell should steadily build to a maximum late Monday. The direction should be centered on 315 plus or minus 7 degrees. Peak heights could be borderline high for select locations with appropriate sea floor topography causing high refraction, which amplifies the swell during breaking.
If this episode unfolds as forecasted, it would be roughly a 100 year event for surf of such size from a non-recurving-typhoon source so early in the season, that is, purely from energy of the circumpolar jet. This statement is based on the fact that the average date of arrival of a double-overhead or 12 feet trough to crest surf is 9/17 with standard deviation of 9 days. This puts 8/23 25 days ahead of schedule or nearly 3 standard deviations out.
- If a niceness gang wants to put together a Northshore surf trip this winter drop me a line as my buddy rents his house out on the beach at backyards.

To generalize about an entire nation's people is infantile.. It's like assuming all americans are like our president.
Plenty of frenchmen helped beat the germans back in ww2.
The anti-french meme coursing through mainstream american culture right now is ugly, uninformed and childish. While Chirac may have had his own political reasons for disagreeing with America's war in Iraq.. it was anything but "spineless" for him to stand up to Bush and his war-hungry posse.

hit a miserable-looking stretch of red-tide peaks this dp with Kaiser and another buddy, Alex. if it hadn't been Friday morning before a weekend during which i will be away from Mamma Ocean i likely woulda taken a pass and headed straight to Pancake Point. however, as is often the case, it was better than it looked and fun was had. nuthin spectacular, but a mixture of wally dumpers, the odd waist-high peeler, and, of course, a few kook-outs as i occasionally found myself in just the wrong place over the shallow bars. plus, with just the three of us and one other chill head out, the vibe was muy excellente!
back on the beach, i crossed paths with Korewin who was headed out for a quick seshie, heard rumors that the Lizard had been lurking, and smiled to see Korewin slip into a sweet little left as i pulled away. ahhh...Friday....

Posted by: steama at August 20, 2004 12:03 PMblakestah: have some time to do some educating? i am starting to understand swell prediction a little better, but still ignorant. i understand that longer period means bigger more powerful waves, even if the swell height isn't as big (i.e. 3ft14secs bigger than 5ft7secs) but is there an exact correlation between the period and the height that the waves are gonna be? like, add this many feet to the wave height per second of period?

Posted by: jdz at August 20, 2004 12:41 PMThis is a Surfline Surf Alert for the North Pacific effective Friday, August 20.
A new long-period WNW swell is starting to brew up in the North Pacific. A WNW'er? Wait a minute... what the... it's freaking August for crying out loud.
No we aren't really late for a winter surf alert, there actually is a storm forming in the North Pacific that will be sending some new WNW swell toward Hawaii and California. It isn't a huge system but it is very out of season to be sporting the 40+ knot winds that satellites have been recording. Surfwise we can expect the largest part of the swell to hit Hawaii early next week with smaller version to arrive in California closely behind.
Make sure to check the Surfline Forecasts to find out how this new swell will affect your favorite spots.

Ok, where did I put those links from J......
Posted by: Kaiser at August 20, 2004 01:56 PMWave period is proportional to wave velocity, and to the square root of the wave energy.
In other words, a 3 ft 14 sec wave has 4 times as much energy as a 3 ft 7 sec wave.
There is also a corresponding increase in wave line length. 14 second period waves have long long lines compared to 7 sec periods.
3 ft 14 seconds at Ocean Beach translates to a solid head high with long lines. 4 ft 14 seconds is solid overhead.

Posted by: j at August 20, 2004 02:20 PMyeah, water temps are up out there. 68 at SE Papa, too.
any chance coastal waters will warm up to the point of trunkability?
Posted by: g at August 20, 2004 02:25 PMOffshore waters are 4C above normal - actually, more than that in some spots. Check it with OTIS at FNMOC. This is a larger anomaly than late summer 1997 in the north Pacific, and we had a hella good September/October that year (and then hella storms).
Once upwellings cease, probably in 2-3 more weeks, water temps are going to break 60 locally, trunkable when it is sunny, for those with good insulation.

thanks blakestah. trying to get my head around the square root of wave energy, but i think it means i'll get to try the rfs in some real juice sooner rather than later...and two fine months of excellent waves and then a winter full of powder isn't a bad long term prediction at all. who's virginia?
Posted by: steamwand at August 20, 2004 02:44 PMBlakestah: -1
We (SF peeps) don't say "hella". That term is reserved for folks dwelling in the south/east bay. Most common in the southern east bay, Fremont and San Jose. You will notice it sed more frequently and in greater concentration as you proceed towards the epicenter. This is similar to folks from Mass. who say "wicked" as in "Did you see Nomarhhhh get to that ball? That was wicked cool....."
Sorry! We must deduct a point for that.
Posted by: Kaiser at August 20, 2004 02:57 PMsteamwand - you're gonna need stiffer bumpers...that board has the red bumpers, which will be a bit of a challenge in solid overhead conditions. Drop me a line if you want to change...its definitely a noticeable difference. It relates to the water speed, and pressure across the fin. The reds do OK from tiny up to head high, but any larger than that and the board starts to turn too quickly.
Also, local winds trash 2 out of 3 early season swells. Keep that in mind.

Posted by: Sutro D at August 20, 2004 03:33 PMdamn.. mad yoyo skillz! i've never seen some of that stuff. The footbag crew was really into juggling though.. and that diablo thing with the two sticks that's in the above video. This one incredible footbagger named Tim Kelly (who still lives on Oak - near you mwsf) quit footbag to pursue juggling full time and ended up being the US national 3-ball champion. Footbag really works the same part of the brain as juggling, or something (blakestah?) because all the top footbaggers could pick up juggling really fast.. I learned to do overhand mills mess and shit like that in only a few months. all those things.. juggling, yoyo, diablo, footbag, breakdancing, skateboarding, trials biking, music! all seem to stem from the same freestyle, trick-based, improvisational part of the brain.. Surfing is kind-of in that category but you can't hammer out the same trick 800 times in one session the way you can in juggling or footbag or yoyo or skating.

Posted by: Dennis at August 20, 2004 05:23 PMBVB, why you so down on Pacifica? You better than us? You frickin LA yuppie transplant. Pacifica is white trash with a trailer park to greet your ass. SF is transplant artist wannabe hell. Drive up sloat over perfect twin peaks and meet a big ass rainbow flag, that's SF. Pacifica, the deep south of northern california baby.
Posted by: key-low at August 20, 2004 06:10 PMBlakestah,
Ph.D.'s don't say hella or hecka. Those words are for those of us who struggled through high school, high on 'Global', drinking Coronas with lime and smoking brown dirt weed.
You'll never be local, dude, so don't start trying.
Posted by: semi_irritable at August 20, 2004 06:26 PMHey no name! Where'd you get the Baker Beach shots? Via Google, that fucktard .com? Or just cruising porn?
Posted by: star_69 at August 20, 2004 06:28 PMUh..., is that YOU Cadaver?:
You are the answered image master.
Pacific surfer guy: Hey man, you're right - I'm a dick. Pacifica RULES! Keep tirading!
LOVE THIS PLACE CALLED FRISCO!
Copy of ORGANIC DWELLNESS in my lap, 48" flat screen - smell of flowers and style all around - view of the city soma - glass of Chardoney, black silk teddy.
Posted by: Agnes at August 20, 2004 08:12 PMNo No. Life could not be better except I am without a man.
Apologies to all for your wayward minds.
I hate Coronas...crap beer. Tecate in a can, unless I am in Baja, then Tecate in a bottle (or the south, then PBR in a can).
Hella, hecka, who cares...I've lived in SF longer than I've lived anyplace, could care less about "local" status, my neighbors know me and say hey when I see em surfing, good enough for me, always has been.
Posted by: blakestah at August 20, 2004 08:35 PMsemi_ir, maybe you should take up painting. this guy could help you:

Posted by: pbs at August 21, 2004 09:28 AMWhat the hell kind of comebacks are these?
"I don't drink Corona" eww! Tecate is piss too, just look where it is in the supermarket, right next to 40's of old E.
Transplants suck. Transplants are the reason rent for a 1 BR is over $1000 in this overated area.
That PBS artist guy fucking rips man.

It wasn't anything like throwing Christians to the lions.
Hodads,
The boy, Morgan, called it so right. Salmon Creek was offshore, peaky, glassy and everything up to head high this morning. Just lovely and we all still have all our limbs.
You'd think that with it's reputation it would be kind of a lonely, spooky place to surf but it was packed. We must have seen every single one of our favorite grizzled locals and there were even a whole bunch of cute chicks that still had all their teeth. Everybody was hooting, hollering, winking, nodding and smiling like it was the first decent day all summer. Which it was.
A bunch of 'em are headed up to Point Arena tomorrow to surf and watch a little contest at Moat Creek. I've included the contest information below. Since it's a good three hours drive from here and all the good surfers are bound to clear out of southern Marin for the deal, "Da Kat", "The Fly", my wife and I with our poodle, Gomez, may slip back to one of "Whitey's" breaks and try for "nice" again.
Join us if you like.

-----------
Benefit surf contest at Moat Creek
On Sunday, Aug. 22 the Brotherhood and Sisterhood Board Shop in Gualala will sponsor the second annual surf contest at Moat Creek in Point Arena. Registration will be the day of the contest, which will start at 8 a.m. Moat Creek is located two miles south of Point Arena. Contestants are looking for a south swell on Sunday with waves at 2-3 feet.
Surfers from all along the Mendocino Coast are expected to show up, and younger surfers and women are encouraged to come and compete.
Last year 40 surfers participated. Their families and friends came out to the beach for a picnic and barbecue.
There will also be a raffle for a new longboard. All proceeds will support the Moat Creek Managing Agency which is dedicated to preserving the natural habitats in the area. The agency has been preserving a protecting a trail and parking area at Moat Creek for about 15 years. They recently obtained an easement from a private property owner and have put in a one and one-half-mile bluff top trail.
Come out and enjoy a day of family fun and surfing and support this important cause. For more information, call Di Scott at the Brotherhood and Sisterhood Board Shop at 884-1087.
Posted by: at August 21, 2004 10:53 PMspider man, shut the hell up, you just named all my spots. now all these suv driving mobile phone calling donut eating kooks are going to know the names of the spots too.
Posted by: mr invisible at August 22, 2004 12:14 AMsome grumpy people will never learn
Posted by: at August 22, 2004 01:18 AMall "my" spots. I bet ive surfed there longer than you. not like you own the land. get used to it. in fact ive been telling all my friends and family to start surfing here. get used to it.
Posted by: at August 22, 2004 01:20 AMnice to see everyone is playing nice in the sandbox here. Just having the gumption to paddle out at any north coast break gives you instant hero status. The only locals on our coast go by the name of Great White Shark. Share waves and look out for each other.Lifes to short.

and if you whine about disclosure of spots than bitch about it to surfline. Look up the photo section on the northern calif section and on page 32 youll see a shite load of pics of "secret spots"on the north coast .

thanks spider-man & shadow.
Posted by: connect the dots at August 22, 2004 03:01 PMI never knew about the surfline photo thing.
Now I just combine that with a good map or photos and you are correct!
The internet is killing privacy!
Way to go boys, when the stretch between Tijuana and SF is paved we can all sit out on my porch and laugh and laugh about the "good ol' days"
semi_ir, that guy can't help you. he died some years ago.

Posted by: mr invisible at August 22, 2004 05:51 PMOops, sorry boys.
The post about the surf contest was lifted from the Mendocino Beacon and Salmon Creek is only somewhat more "secret" than Linda Mar.
I would never, ever tell you that it was ______ at ______ . Which is exactly where we ended up paddling out after we checked ______ and ______ yesterday.
It was real sweet and since it was just us, still a secret.
