E's Surf Report

I was opposite E this morning. I was the one in the car at 6:15 waiting for the sun to come up so a little fog could burn off and show me a few lines of juice. But, the fog didn't go anywhere and the waves were not there. However, the fugly winds were...

I just checked a few bouy sites and it looks like the NW swell is hitting most of the bouys north of here but not the SF bouy. Also, bouys south of here are showing some longer period energy but that could be the 185 south being registered.

So, nothing to report other then I had a sweet nap on 3 beanbags in my office for about 45 mins this morning. Maybe later?

If I'm figuring this stuff out (which I'm probably not) the SF buoy isn't showing long-period energy yet, but the California buoy sure is: swell energy vs. period, and apparently has been for a while . . . which means GET YOUR WORK DONE, I think.

Couldnt sleep much knowing that the Prophet Blakestahs' prediction of coming change is nearing us. All the bouys up North seem to showing long period energy.(winds with it?)Could all the Reef/Pointbreaks begin stirring from thier slumber?

Wanted to ask all the heads about new england surfing(Mass area) Gotta make a trip back there soon for a few and was curious about its potential.Water temps?Reefs?Crowds?

looks like the summer crap will continue to haunt us for a few more days/weeks. looking forward to surfing again, but probably not this week again! shit. SW winds really suck. when will it all end?

As far as lunchtime surfing, I may be interested in a ride sometime if anyone leaves from downtown. My wife and I only have one car so I travel by bus. I usually get in a DP by riding with a friend to OB, surf, ride back to work, stash my board in a closet, and then ride home on the bus with it. You should see the dirty looks other riders give. :)

Gotta work till about 4pm today then id like to try and surf after, conditions permitting. Met Robin Williams at a work related function once with my sister(who was pregnent at the time).He had the room laughing instantly, so i imagine his show should be just as good. I was just reading about east coast and they have some big temperature swings between winter and summer.

No, don't ride on Muni. AC Transit to Oakland, first stop. And I've had the nose drip problem on there too. When I can't get a ride, I drive myself, wait for sunrise, surf till 8:30, drive home, then ride bart to work. That sucks though. Anyway, best is to carpool with a bud.

fyi you lunchies -OB: the onshores are on it something fierce, choppy sloppy, size potential isn't showing yet, though already bigger than yesterday and due to earlier direct impacts my head tells me the juice is starting to push through. High stoke will get you far today..it really ain't clean at all.

I hope Dennis and Blakestah remembered to rinse thoroughly post session due to the unusually high cootie factor this am. Unfortunately those useful water testing sites still do not have the ability to check for cooties, so everybody, please exercise common sense and caution when you plan your ocean going activities. After nearly dripping nosewater down some young lassie's ass crack on my way to NYC, I managed to get into the water in Mon*&^$ and S. Hampton. First time Ive ever been up there. Waves sucked but worst of all were the limited parking facilities. Bascially, you gotta have a permit to park in the tiny lots and can't park on the roads. If you do, the vultures will give you a $125 ticket. I saw one sign that said tickets were $12,500??? I would rather deal with the HWY 1 banditos than deal with the BS parking issues those poor bastards up in LI have to put up with.

it was nice meeting you guys too, although i have to say i am not feeling so up on surfing or ocean beach today. i hate it when i get myself all in a tizzy anticipating a swell and can't sleep well and get up early and get skunked. i wanted to see what's pictured above not what i saw crossing the great highway this a.m. now i'm all icky and tired. boo hoo poor me.

Reggae headz, Monterey Reggaefest '04 plans to be an event synonomous with Niceness themes, good music, good folks, room to dance and some thundering waves only a few miles away at various MBay wave havens. it is an excellent event and rarely crowded as the Labor Day weekend has folks all over de place. I guess I just blew that secret but oh well. I got no prob sharing Good Vibes.

here's the scoop on Massachusetts surfing from someone who surfed ob religiously for the past 12 years. IT SUCKS! ok, new englanders, take your shots at me. every spot has it's day, and i have surfed some decent days here, but for the majority of the time, it's a joke. now granted, i am definitely bitter about moving back here (family obligations and all), so i have a biased opinion. a 9 to 5'er in s.f. will get waves. sure, it's windy for 5 months, and the weekends get crowded, but you will get surf. east coast? sure, it has its days, but think about this: 1 - look at the jetstream -- blows from japan to you. on the east coast, it blows from us to spain -- wrong wind direction=lack of waves. 2 - BIG tidal swings. a spot might work for an hour and then disappear. if your schedule doesn't synch with the right tide, you're shot. 3 - you can read what you want about how great wetsuit technology is, but the bottom line is it is freaking colder than you could imagine in the winter. sure, you can tell me to "sack up" and get out there, but when the water is 35 degrees, the fun factor fades in a big way. 4 - you gotta pay to play. where i live, if you don't have a town parking sticker, you get ticketed or towed. not too fun to come in and have your car gone when you're freezing. 5 - unless you are on the cape, better go to rhode island or new hampshire. see that long arm of cape cod on the map? blocks the swell from most of the state. 6 - don't you love those fall and winter swells that last for a week or more? sure you do. out here, you're lucky if you get a three-day swell. there just isn't the fetch that the pacific has to enable swells to last for a long time. it's all short period wind swell or short-term hurricane swell (and that is very infrequent), so if you miss it, you're toast.

bottom line is, r.i. has the reefs and has the biggest swell window. this time of year the water is low 60's, and it is pretty crowded. n.h. gets some decent waves, but has a crowd factor as well. if you are middle of the pecking order in s.f., you will be top dog out here.

remember how you started surfing at linda mar, got better and graduated to the beach? how you kind of snort and laugh now when you drive by taco bell and see all the kooks sitting out there when it looks as lame as can be? i WISH i could surf lindy again. compared to my local spots, linda mar is world class. i haven't surfed an overhead wave in Mass. since last october. if you guys go to the beach, follow e's example -- SURF EVERY TIME YOU CAN, whether it looks like crap or not, b/c there will most likely come a time in your life when other things take priority.

before i moved here, a friend of mine said "you CAN surf in new england, but you WON'T" i think he hit the nail on the head

I flew out of Boston once and swore the Cape Cod area had a point break/sandspit thing going on for 100's of yards. It looked epic. It probably doesn't exist though, huh? It would be well known.

Actually, vibes are WAY more than shallow talk. maybe that's part of the problem here. Every living thing throws off a vibe. Vibes are instinctual and significant, deep forays into the essence of a being. Science likes to think vibes can be explained by a theory or equation...i refute that....

I'm interested in hearing more about OB history. For instance, there's a spot that used to be called "Deadmans" but from the sound of it, it seems to be Baker or China beach. Also, Pedro Point used to be a popular spot but not any more -- why? I used to bodyboard Montara a lot, especially the southern end on big swells, and there was no one around, let alone parking lot scuffles. What gives?

Ever since I was a kid and before I surfed, I was bodyboarding. The spookiest thing ever happened one November. I was out a ways from Kellys as the waves were breaking pretty far out. It was a little foggy and getting dark, probably 6-8 ft, no problem. I was not too far from the rocks when suddenly a wave reared up on the 2nd sandbar and began to break about 20 yards out from me. I ditched the sponge and dove straight down. Even though I made it pretty deep, the wave sent me through the spin cycle and my ears compressed. When I came up, there was foam everywhere but otherwise was exactly like before. It was too eerie and almost dark so I headed in. While I've been pummeled worse than that, it was the weirdest feeling I've ever had out there.

It may be strange but sometimes I love a good thrashing by a wave even more than surfing it. Makes you glad to be alive. :)

hindy -- the cape is alllll beach break, but it's not like cal or mexi beach break. sand is softer, the waves dump close to shore, and the bottom is steep, so the rides are short. i think it shifts a lot quicker than west coast sandbars

Thanks for the info on New England. Im gonna be busy with work/grad school so i probably wont have much time to dodge icebergs during my 2 year stay. Long term id like to buy a house on the point in Pavones and retire there but then who wouldnt......i just checked Kellys and there is Something showing.....

I think it was at the nipple of cape cod, like where it hits the bay or whatever it is. I think it was kind of an inaccesable area, but it was definitly bending the swells around and breaking like, say uhhh, a sandy version of fort point maybe. Things do look much different from the air though.

Some negativity breeds strength. We'd be total pussies if it were'nt for some negative energy. OK, I guess I'll start the fight today, no offense but the talk here is pretty shallow. I mean shit, wer're talking about standing on a frickin thing of foam and glass for a couple seconds. There's other shit going in this life man.

sutro -- there is some surf in the marshfield area, close to where i live. water quality is great. except for right around boston, i have never heard of the beaches being closed. then again, i am not sure how much they test the water. sorry for the negativity, but it's like living in vail and then moving to upstate new york -- you can do it but it pales in comparison. just glad i grabbed the beach as much as i did...

There is no break named Deadmans in San Francisco - it is a myth.

This morning's swell was from a small (in area) storm with high winds (therefore long periods and sparse sets). The fetch wasn't really aimed at us, so the sets were small. The fetch swung toward us, slowly, over 36 hours, and grew in size, and decreased in wind speed. So, until Thursday morning, swell will get bigger, and decrease in period.

Winds are supposed to be a LITTLE lighter tonite and tomorrrow morning. Thursday morning will be the peak of groundswell, but NW winds will be on it. Friday looks potentially bad for winds too, as a second swell comes in. Saturday and Sunday will both have smaller waves, but still 12+ second periods present.

The angle, 290-300, will hit a LOT of spots, so a drive could be a worthwhile investment.

Reminds me of when I worked in a rehab facility for teens with substance abuse problems. As they cleaned up they kept having dreams of getting high. Glad we don't get locked up for our addiction.

bbr, no. I grew up inland in San Joaquin valley but spent a lot of summers with friends in La Selva Beach, bodyboarding and skating. I have relatives in SLO and went to Cal Poly and that's where I began surfing. So I haven't been surfing that long. Don't know anyone in AG. Epic month there -- Jan. 1998, watching a couple crazies catch 25 ft. waves rolling through the harbor entrance in Morro Bay.

Sorry about the spot naming before. Just wanted to talk history, not interested in screwing things up for anyone. It's interesting how the popularity of spots changes over time, for instance Windansea.

Kaiser please post more Curren shots and maybe a supermodel picture if you can find one until that swell finally gets here and the wind backs off with the fog.

What is the scoop on "Pedro Point"? The term is now used to describe the big wave point at the south end of linda mar that is hardly ever surfed. Different places state that "Pedro Point" used to be a popular surf site. I think what used to be called "pedro point" is now called "Linda Mar".

Ladies and gentlemen, the swell is here. It's just starting consistently hitting here at Manor. And it's lining up. No shape 'cause of the tide onshore all day, but it's a nice thick shorey which should look good on the low.

maybe bush's social/cultural/lifestyle matters have been "delivered on" if you're in the top 1% income bracket. but.. for most people.. their lifestyles are threatened (or ravaged) by his frightening environmental policies (no funding for superfund, roadless areas made road-friendly, ranches in the west cleared for gas and oil drilling, pollution laws made flexible for huge industry, etc.) He's trying to amend the constitution so that gay's can't marry.. thus hurting the lifestle of 10% of the population. His pointless, ugly, and painful war has succeeded in murdering well over 10,000 innocent civilians and hundreds of US servicemen, not to mention casting a shadow over the temperment of every sound-minded american. With the Bush Administration in office every intelligent american cringes with each new Bush-sponsored piece of legislation.

Kerry may not be the best possible candidate.. but we need to remove the thuggish, power-hungry, shortsighted neo-cons and their dimwitted, idiodic figurehead from office.

i'm semi hammered, but i made the mistake of getting into a political discussion at the bars tonight. luckily a couple of hotties suaded me from the diatribes, but some of those coals still burn.

there is so much wrong with the bush administration that i would never try to take it on fully, but e's done a damn good job of articulating many of it's outrages. i would add, that with their corporate plundering, they have muddied the waters on so many issues that the american public can't even make sense of what should be straight forward topics such as health care, the recent overtime bills, najaf, halliburton, HIV/AIDs initiatives. you can't make a decision if the data or wording on the bills are so obscure and unclear that their meaning won't be understood for weeks to come, and by then, the attention of the average american will be on to the next best political hairdo.

this is so ridiculous, that as a student of public policy, i'm distraught at the most heightened dishonesty and equivocation this country has seen since the nixon era.
