Sloppy.. no signs of the groundswell as of 8am
Sloppy but effective utility session this morning. I did the “I’ll put my suit on at my house and just go for a surf without checking the conditions” thing and I’m glad I did. If I had driven down there and snooped around and been lulled by the calm, non-windy warmth of my car I probably wouldn’t have headed out. I hoped that I’d benefit from a few for-runner sets of this Aleutian groundswell…but.. absolutely no long-period waves came in between 7:20 to 8:10am. I chuckled about all the talk/venom/consternation on the board yesterday regarding nor-cal crowds.. because there was absolutely NOBODY around this morning. Granted the conditions looked horrible from the beach. I mean really bad. But ye ol’ adage, “It was better than it looked,” came true once again today. Nothing special but I found maybe 5 or 6 mildly chunky lefts that caused a smile and necessitated some technical maneuvering. One little guy set up nicely and allowed for a speedy drop and then a quick bottom-turn top-turn combo.. then a fun re-entry as the wave closed-out. I enjoyed a few totally wacky waves that would break and then reform and then warble and just do all these funky gyrations as I just glided along and tried to stay on the thing. Pretty cool.
Doods.. would like to write more but I have a meeting here at work.
Shout out to Jeff in Los Osos.. thanks for those pics.. nice boat shots..
Shout out to sharkbait – always strait up wit it.
Couple of tasty photos from Jamie
I was opposite E this morning. I was the one in the car at 6:15 waiting for the sun to come up so a little fog could burn off and show me a few lines of juice. But, the fog didn't go anywhere and the waves were not there. However, the fugly winds were...
I just checked a few bouy sites and it looks like the NW swell is hitting most of the bouys north of here but not the SF bouy. Also, bouys south of here are showing some longer period energy but that could be the 185 south being registered.
So, nothing to report other then I had a sweet nap on 3 beanbags in my office for about 45 mins this morning. Maybe later?
Posted by: Kaiser at August 24, 2004 10:09 AMIf I'm figuring this stuff out (which I'm probably not) the SF buoy isn't showing long-period energy yet, but the California buoy sure is: swell energy vs. period, and apparently has been for a while . . . which means GET YOUR WORK DONE, I think.
Posted by: Klooless at August 24, 2004 10:18 AMCouldnt sleep much knowing that the Prophet Blakestahs' prediction of coming change is nearing us. All the bouys up North seem to showing long period energy.(winds with it?)Could all the Reef/Pointbreaks begin stirring from thier slumber?
Wanted to ask all the heads about new england surfing(Mass area) Gotta make a trip back there soon for a few and was curious about its potential.Water temps?Reefs?Crowds?
Posted by: Sutro D at August 24, 2004 10:22 AMlooks like the summer crap will continue to haunt us for a few more days/weeks. looking forward to surfing again, but probably not this week again! shit. SW winds really suck. when will it all end?

however the morning was fruitful because i DID

Swell *is* showing, the main size has just not come up yet. 1.8 ft. @17 showing on SF buoy. You can see from the narrow dot that it is quite focused.

As far as lunchtime surfing, I may be interested in a ride sometime if anyone leaves from downtown. My wife and I only have one car so I travel by bus. I usually get in a DP by riding with a friend to OB, surf, ride back to work, stash my board in a closet, and then ride home on the bus with it. You should see the dirty looks other riders give. :)
Posted by: Nate at August 24, 2004 10:44 AMGotta work till about 4pm today then id like to try and surf after, conditions permitting. Met Robin Williams at a work related function once with my sister(who was pregnent at the time). He had the room laughing instantly, so i imagine his show should be just as good. I was just reading about east coast and they have some big temperature swings between winter and summer.
Posted by: Sutro D at August 24, 2004 10:49 AMEver imagine Ocean Beach with 78 degree water?
im kinda glad i have to wear a wetsuit here.
damn Nate, thats a tough commute for the dp. i hate riding muni with a board.
praying for some evening juice!
Posted by: luke at August 24, 2004 10:49 AMdo you ride the 5 Fulton? one morning during rush hour i saw a dude with a board nose-dripping on people's shoes. got some ok waves this weekend around pismo. really glassy but small.

Posted by: bbr at August 24, 2004 10:52 AMYep, it's showing now, but it wasn't an hour ago, unless I clicked on the wrong thing then.
I'm gonna hit it somewhere lunch-ish, I think. The low isn't very low . . .
Posted by: Klooless at August 24, 2004 10:55 AMHope you SF heads get some swell today/tonight.
Got suuuuper glassy footer waves this mornin' Was very pissed at myself for pig-dogging a left for NO reason. I have the same problem as you E but have been so conscious for the last 6 months not to grab my rail. So I grab it on a 1/2 footer. yay.
Burning Spear tonight in SB!! Gonnna be insane and will probably be watching the opening dub medley floating around up by the ceiling. Howwww you feeellling? Iiiiiiiiiiiiirrriiiiieee.
Posted by: Hb at August 24, 2004 11:01 AMPut my suit on at home and drove to the beach. Didn't look. Didn't care what the conditions. Had to surf. Nice formally meeting Blakestah this am and some friendly chat btwn waves. Also good to meet Steamwand. And of course, always a pleasure to see Sharkbait :)
Quick little dumpy rides but what the hey. It's all good.
Blakestah, thanks for the offer of the test ride this am. I'd really like to try it out on a day when the waves are more worthy. It sure looks like the fin setup is working for you.

Posted by: j at August 24, 2004 11:19 AMLunchie is possible. Not sure about the winds. Can't go this afternoon so lunch would be the only time I can make it out.
Posted by: Kaiser at August 24, 2004 11:24 AMNo, don't ride on Muni. AC Transit to Oakland, first stop. And I've had the nose drip problem on there too. When I can't get a ride, I drive myself, wait for sunrise, surf till 8:30, drive home, then ride bart to work. That sucks though. Anyway, best is to carpool with a bud.
Posted by: Nate at August 24, 2004 11:30 AMfyi you lunchies -OB: the onshores are on it something fierce, choppy sloppy, size potential isn't showing yet, though already bigger than yesterday and due to earlier direct impacts my head tells me the juice is starting to push through. High stoke will get you far today..it really ain't clean at all.
Great meeting steamwand at last. Steamwand, email madisoncuckoo at yahoo if you're around and up for future jaunts. Also cheers to Dennis and Blakestah...pleasant suprise this morning. Blakestah's rides look astonishingly smooth no matter how lumpy the conditions. I lassoed [ sp?] a couple of waves but careened along like a crazed bucking bronco. Nada finesse but what fun. I hope Dennis and Blakestah remembered to rinse thoroughly post session due to the unusually high cootie factor this am. Unfortunately those useful water testing sites still do not have the ability to check for cooties, so everybody, please exercise common sense and caution when you plan your ocean going activities. Cheers,

If you do, the vultures will give you a $125 ticket. I saw one sign that said tickets were $12,500??? huh?
that is if i remember how to surf and where to surf? oh, yeah, surfing is like so rad. and surfing at secret spots is so radder.
nah, seriously though, i had a dream that i was surfing this "secret" spot and upon arrival at the beach, you were supposed to check into this VIP area, kinda like the beach hut at windandsea, but way plusher. the real kicker was that during your stay you were allowed to check out a lamborgini. i know, sounds ridiculous. but it was awesome. i don't think i even drove it. just the fact that it was offered was a nice perk.

here's the scoop on Massachusetts surfing from someone who surfed ob religiously for the past 12 years. IT SUCKS! ok, new englanders, take your shots at me. every spot has it's day, and i have surfed some decent days here, but for the majority of the time, it's a joke. now granted, i am definitely bitter about moving back here (family obligations and all), so i have a biased opinion. a 9 to 5'er in s.f. will get waves. sure, it's windy for 5 months, and the weekends get crowded, but you will get surf. east coast? sure, it has its days, but think about this: 1 - look at the jetstream -- blows from japan to you. on the east coast, it blows from us to spain -- wrong wind direction=lack of waves. 2 - BIG tidal swings. a spot might work for an hour and then disappear. if your schedule doesn't synch with the right tide, you're shot. 3 - you can read what you want about how great wetsuit technology is, but the bottom line is it is freaking colder than you could imagine in the winter. sure, you can tell me to "sack up" and get out there, but when the water is 35 degrees, the fun factor fades in a big way. 4 - you gotta pay to play. where i live, if you don't have a town parking sticker, you get ticketed or towed. not too fun to come in and have your car gone when you're freezing. 5 - unless you are on the cape, better go to rhode island or new hampshire. see that long arm of cape cod on the map? blocks the swell from most of the state. 6 - don't you love those fall and winter swells that last for a week or more? sure you do. out here, you're lucky if you get a three-day swell. there just isn't the fetch that the pacific has to enable swells to last for a long time. it's all short period wind swell or short-term hurricane swell (and that is very infrequent), so if you miss it, you're toast.
bottom line is, r.i. has the reefs and has the biggest swell window. this time of year the water is low 60's, and it is pretty crowded. n.h. gets some decent waves, but has a crowd factor as well. if you are middle of the pecking order in s.f., you will be top dog out here.
remember how you started surfing at linda mar, got better and graduated to the beach? how you kind of snort and laugh now when you drive by taco bell and see all the kooks sitting out there when it looks as lame as can be? i WISH i could surf lindy again. compared to my local spots, linda mar is world class. i haven't surfed an overhead wave in Mass. since last october. if you guys go to the beach, follow e's example -- SURF EVERY TIME YOU CAN, whether it looks like crap or not, b/c there will most likely come a time in your life when other things take priority.
before i moved here, a friend of mine said "you CAN surf in new england, but you WON'T" i think he hit the nail on the head

Actually, vibes are WAY more than shallow talk. maybe that's part of the problem here. Every living thing throws off a vibe. Vibes are instinctual and significant, deep forays into the essence of a being. Science likes to think vibes can be explained by a theory or equation...i refute that....
Posted by: steama at August 24, 2004 12:53 PMI'm interested in hearing more about OB history. For instance, there's a spot that used to be called "Deadmans" but from the sound of it, it seems to be Baker or China beach. Also, Pedro Point used to be a popular spot but not any more -- why? I used to bodyboard Montara a lot, especially the southern end on big swells, and there was no one around, let alone parking lot scuffles. What gives?
Ever since I was a kid and before I surfed, I was bodyboarding. The spookiest thing ever happened one November. I was out a ways from Kellys as the waves were breaking pretty far out. It was a little foggy and getting dark, probably 6-8 ft, no problem. I was not too far from the rocks when suddenly a wave reared up on the 2nd sandbar and began to break about 20 yards out from me. I ditched the sponge and dove straight down. Even though I made it pretty deep, the wave sent me through the spin cycle and my ears compressed. When I came up, there was foam everywhere but otherwise was exactly like before. It was too eerie and almost dark so I headed in. While I've been pummeled worse than that, it was the weirdest feeling I've ever had out there.
It may be strange but sometimes I love a good thrashing by a wave even more than surfing it. Makes you glad to be alive. :)
Posted by: Nate at August 24, 2004 12:54 PMhindy -- the cape is alllll beach break, but it's not like cal or mexi beach break. sand is softer, the waves dump close to shore, and the bottom is steep, so the rides are short. i think it shifts a lot quicker than west coast sandbars
Posted by: at August 24, 2004 12:55 PMThanks for the info on New England. Im gonna be busy with work/grad school so i probably wont have much time to dodge icebergs during my 2 year stay. Long term id like to buy a house on the point in Pavones and retire there but then who wouldnt......i just checked Kellys and there is Something showing.....
Posted by: Sutro D at August 24, 2004 01:02 PMI think it was at the nipple of cape cod, like where it hits the bay or whatever it is. I think it was kind of an inaccesable area, but it was definitly bending the swells around and breaking like, say uhhh, a sandy version of fort point maybe. Things do look much different from the air though.
Posted by: hindy at August 24, 2004 01:04 PMSome negativity breeds strength. We'd be total pussies if it were'nt for some negative energy. OK, I guess I'll start the fight today, no offense but the talk here is pretty shallow. I mean shit, wer're talking about standing on a frickin thing of foam and glass for a couple seconds. There's other shit going in this life man.

Posted by: SF_AIDS_HIV at August 24, 2004 01:39 PMThere is no break named Deadmans in San Francisco - it is a myth.
This morning's swell was from a small (in area) storm with high winds (therefore long periods and sparse sets). The fetch wasn't really aimed at us, so the sets were small. The fetch swung toward us, slowly, over 36 hours, and grew in size, and decreased in wind speed. So, until Thursday morning, swell will get bigger, and decrease in period.
Winds are supposed to be a LITTLE lighter tonite and tomorrrow morning. Thursday morning will be the peak of groundswell, but NW winds will be on it. Friday looks potentially bad for winds too, as a second swell comes in. Saturday and Sunday will both have smaller waves, but still 12+ second periods present.
The angle, 290-300, will hit a LOT of spots, so a drive could be a worthwhile investment.
Good fun this morning, Dennis and I and the ladies in the house.
Posted by: blakestah at August 24, 2004 01:40 PMelias- I was intrigued by your post. During the recent flat spell I often had dreams about head high waves. Anyone else?

Posted by: Kaiser at August 24, 2004 02:18 PMbbr, no. I grew up inland in San Joaquin valley but spent a lot of summers with friends in La Selva Beach, bodyboarding and skating. I have relatives in SLO and went to Cal Poly and that's where I began surfing. So I haven't been surfing that long. Don't know anyone in AG. Epic month there -- Jan. 1998, watching a couple crazies catch 25 ft. waves rolling through the harbor entrance in Morro Bay.
Sorry about the spot naming before. Just wanted to talk history, not interested in screwing things up for anyone. It's interesting how the popularity of spots changes over time, for instance Windansea.

MAN, i miss those KPOO and KZSU (stanford) and the berkely one too, reggae shows. They used to start out with the 4 oclock roadblock of a Marley live concert and then just get niceness (before this site!) all sunday evening.
Remember a dj named Spliff Skankin'? Best name and best show ever, out of the Berkeley station i think.
Posted by: Hb at August 24, 2004 02:36 PMIs KFJC still on the air? They used to have a show called the Dread Flash that was pretty good.

Sutro D - you might have some good surf if you're going in mid-sept. The water will most likely be in the low to mid 70's with some storm swell. I loved sept when I lived in NJ.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at August 24, 2004 02:59 PMThanks Dennis. I plan on moving there in June so by the time Fall rolls around i should have my situation pretty dialed in schedule wise then its just a matter of finding a 5mm hooded wetsuit with 5mm booties and 5mm gloves. Id be cool if the Giants would play the red sox at fenway like they did at Pac Bell this year. Also just what is the great white landlord situation like in Nova Anglaterre?
Posted by: Sutro D at August 24, 2004 03:07 PM3to5 I think they have that piece at MOMA right now.. E, you should put a link to aggroville on the front page in the links section. I think a lot of the anon posters will have more fun there.

Posted by: treefunkerslob at August 24, 2004 03:20 PM(1 shot of beer every minute for an hour), I managed to shot my self in the foot with a very strong BB/Pelet gun. A nasty bleed it was. Today I realized that the BB is actually lodged in my skin about an inch further up my foot from the entry site (angled shot). One of my toes hurts when I bend it. I plan on leaving it in there...Unless I have to cut it out on another drunken rampage. Do you think it's okay to stay?
"
so i had this dream the other night, funny little dream. it started off innocently enough, like this
but than it progressed to something more like this

than something resembling this

and before i had a chance to really savor the dream it was finished a lot like this
so odd.

Posted by: at August 24, 2004 04:45 PMIn the latest profile of President Bush's White House record, National Journal finds that, on most social, cultural, and lifestyle matters, Bush has delivered on his campaign promises. But most of those actions could be washed away by John Kerry, or by the Supreme Court.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at August 24, 2004 05:03 PMwhoever is posting the pro-bush/anti-kerry stuff.. i know you're trying to suck us into a political rant..
maybe bush's social/cultural/lifestyle matters have been "delivered on" if you're in the top 1% income bracket. but.. for most people.. their lifestyles are threatened (or ravaged) by his frightening environmental policies (no funding for superfund, roadless areas made road-friendly, ranches in the west cleared for gas and oil drilling, pollution laws made flexible for huge industry, etc.) He's trying to amend the constitution so that gay's can't marry.. thus hurting the lifestle of 10% of the population. His pointless, ugly, and painful war has succeeded in murdering well over 10,000 innocent civilians and hundreds of US servicemen, not to mention casting a shadow over the temperment of every sound-minded american. With the Bush Administration in office every intelligent american cringes with each new Bush-sponsored piece of legislation.
Kerry may not be the best possible candidate.. but we need to remove the thuggish, power-hungry, shortsighted neo-cons and their dimwitted, idiodic figurehead from office.
rant over.

Posted by: Sutro D at August 24, 2004 05:45 PMI confess the anon postings have been me. I made a mistake with my handling of the prisoners at Abu Garhab and I need to make it up to W. I hope you understand, it's just self-preservation.
Posted by: Donald Rumsfeld at August 24, 2004 05:45 PMBIG BUSINESS. TAKES MONEY TO MAKE MONEY. The takes could be a double meaning... Maybe. Big Bizniz is taking our money and making money. Though, we just don't see the returns.
Oh, yeah, we do see the returns. I can't see the ozone anymore, and I like all of us surfers probably have effing SKIN CANCER. I step in oil on over 50% of the beaches I walk on. Oh and when you fly to Oregon or the Pac N. West, look out a window. can you say CHECKERBOARD Wilderness? Let's just bury the remains of a once promising energy form in NEVADA. Shut the door and no one will know. And fuck, while you are at it, start another war. The poor and un-established will be here to be your pawns because they have no other options and for once, a steady paycheck is promising, assuming that they come back. Shit is getting BAD. Badder than BAD VIBE BOB!
Nothing like a post from Mr. Rumsfeld to get an over educated, in debt, and happily living in denial in his uptopian california all fired UP!

My whole 20 years in the Senate I didn't do much. But I figured Howard Dean did all the hard work and since I was in politics longer and from a bigger state I might be able to get some extra attention. Especially among the wealthier Democratic fundraisers.
I never really wanted the job, just wanted the title. And to cut a book deal.
I thought all the idiots on my boat were on heroin? Or alcoholic or schizo. I never dreamed they would remember how I hid under the bunks when the shooting started.

Posted by: gvibe7 at August 24, 2004 09:19 PMsecond,
i'm semi hammered, but i made the mistake of getting into a political discussion at the bars tonight. luckily a couple of hotties suaded me from the diatribes, but some of those coals still burn.
there is so much wrong with the bush administration that i would never try to take it on fully, but e's done a damn good job of articulating many of it's outrages. i would add, that with their corporate plundering, they have muddied the waters on so many issues that the american public can't even make sense of what should be straight forward topics such as health care, the recent overtime bills, najaf, halliburton, HIV/AIDs initiatives. you can't make a decision if the data or wording on the bills are so obscure and unclear that their meaning won't be understood for weeks to come, and by then, the attention of the average american will be on to the next best political hairdo.
this is so ridiculous, that as a student of public policy, i'm distraught at the most heightened dishonesty and equivocation this country has seen since the nixon era.
if you're not disturbed, than you're not paying attention.
finally, the jenner article:
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/West/08/24/crime.counselors.ap/index.html
i really apologize for the negativity here, but i'm tired of watching, and listening, and seeing how the bush campaign just blasts it's message until it's either won or made the issues so murky with falsities that it can't be argued. the american public is being brainwashed, and contrary to the apparent propaganda of the communist and fascist regimes, this is worse, because we don't realize it's happening.
i need surf...
