Small, peaky, glassy, shallow, rad.
niceness.org is going through some server/ip hiccups today so it might be up and down..
Felt like Typhoon Lagoon or something out there this morning. Well-shaped shoulder-high A-frames came cruising in every few minutes and offered delicious, technical , rippable, gulping sections. A few dawn-patrolers scattered up and down the beach but pleasant vibes throughout. 2.6ft 13 seconds at the SF buoy and that’s exactly what it felt like. Well-defined sets of small-sized, medium-period swell pulsed toward shore at regular intervals. The wind blew a mellow onshore but the faces were glassy and often conical. I had a nice look at a barreling wall in front of me on this one backside wave but I got pitched over the falls as the bottom totally fell-out and I didn’t really have anywhere to go. Worth it for the millisecond view. Also always good to charge a semi-gnar wave and then wipe-it with style in front of your homie (Lerm was right there). A few nice frontside waves came through that allowed for some checking and jiving and pumping and carving. Felt good to pick my way down the line on some blippy, rampy waves. Also extremely unbelievably awesome to go through a session with more rides than duckdives!!! You could basically just stand in the lineup. Really shallow. Kinda dangerous out there too as the waves would often bowl then pitch and break with force in just a few feet of water. I had a few wipe-outs where I collided with both the ground and my board. Yo! I saw Lerm on one nice left that he got his board up over the lip on a nice off-the-top.. then bumbled a bit on the re-entry.. but still a stylish off-the-lip for the Lerm.
This one Marine-looking guy with a flat top and fluorescent rails on his board kept doing this slightly annoying thing where every time I would paddle south to combat the north-bound current he would start paddling south too. He basically wouldn’t let me get further south than him.. but as soon as I stopped paddling, he would stop.. as soon as I started, he would start.. pretty annoying.. but once I got out of the little rip that was happening I just let him have his space and just forgot about it. He didn’t give bad vibes or anything it was just funny I guess. People!
Worrrdd… it’ll probably be happening most of the day today, I’d imagine.. not sure if the higher tide later will kill the small swell??
Rippers should be having a field-day out there as it’s small but really punchy.. good for maneuvers or barrels or whatever your mind can fathom.
People are at the Black Rock City right now. Put yourself there for a few minutes this week. Out on the Playa. Exploring. Enthralled.. Enriched.. Weirded… Dirty… Dancing.. Watching… Cavorting… Participating.. Grooving..

I've been trying to slip into work at 6:30 AM so I can leave at 3:30 PM, but it seems like they notice when I leave two hours early. Anyone know where I can get photographs turned into life-size cardboard cut-outs? Perferably sound activated ones that alternately say, "Excellent idea sir. I'll get it done first thing in the morning." or "I'm sorry about that sir, it is completely my fault." Maybe one of those dummies used to cheat the carpool lane would work if only I could make it properly sychophantic and toady-ish.

Posted by: steama at August 31, 2004 12:23 PMMorgan Heritage is a neo-classic Roots Band composed of the offspring of Studio 1 legend Delroy Morgan. Very soul sound and somewhat addictive riddim (if you like reggae).
They are headlining Sunday Nite at Monterey with Anthony B. Should be W-icked.
If you are planning to hit Monterey, let me know. Maybe we can share some waves or most certainly a pungent spliff or 2, chillin on the grass under the big Pines at the fairgrounds.
Surfed last night and the tiny but uber shaped waves provided a speed burst or two.
Better yet, the sunset was phenomenal. Colorful Rays seemingly assaulted the ocean way off shore-beyond the fog.

(Offshore winds forecasted for Friday?)
Posted by: as at August 31, 2004 01:25 PMIt's not October yet. There may be light (3 knots) offshores near dawn, but it'll be onshore later, unless this is like a 1 in a 100 year event.
Saturday has offshores forecast too. It's really supposed to change Thursday night. Friday could be overhead windswell with glassiness.
Posted by: blakestah at August 31, 2004 01:29 PMWaves on the Bay are called Tsunamis. Just gotta paddle out and wait. Unfortunately, 1906 only measured about 4 inches at the Presidio tide guage. Probably not worth the wait.
http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/tsunami/1906.html
Coincidentally, the Tsunamis are San Francisco's Gay and Lesbian swim team. No comment on paddling out to ride a Tsunami.
Posted by: Andrew on 44th at August 31, 2004 01:33 PMActually, right now Saturday is looking REALLY good. No offshores, but should be calm winds, and head high windswell cleaned up all day. Definitely a surf day.
Of course, that is unless you live in NE Florida where a Category 3 Hurricane is supposed to land, and most of the north Atlantic Florida coast will see a 10 ft plus storm surge...
Posted by: blakestah at August 31, 2004 01:34 PMyeah you're right...not october yet. Last Friday had offshores forecasted, but in reality, there were light winds out of the south-southeast. Whenever I hear weather forecasters say "fire danger" I get excited (not because of the the fire danger) because that is when the wind blows offshore.
Getting close to surf season....

OB: SUNFISH SIGHTING. Beware! Actually I'm not kidding. A neighbor - longtime surfer and reliable - spotted the fish at Sloat, I think on Saturday evening. Put his hand in the water, nearly planted it on what he thought was a jelly, and then he noticed this eyeball staring at him. Giant sunfish! Lollygagging about. So we've got penguins, sunfish...yup, the world is going to hell. Sunfish have been known to nibble on surfers, so exercise caution during your ocean activities. Cheers,

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at August 31, 2004 01:45 PMI saw a really strange-looking (dead) fish on the shore the other day, near VFWs. Some others were checking it out, and I stopped to look the guy says "wow weird looking fish, do you know what it is?". I am definitely NOT an expert on fish, but the first thing I said was, "it kinda looks like a sunfish".
Posted by: as at August 31, 2004 01:46 PMHow big are sunfish? Aren't they really big? The fish I say was probably only 12-14 inches long. Very strange.
When Is It Best To Take Crack Cocaine?
As a rule of thumb, it is profoundly unwise to take crack-cocaine. The brain has evolved a truly vicious set of negative feedback mechanisms. Their functional effect is to stop us from being truly happy for long. Nature is cruelly parsimonious with pleasure. The initial short-lived euphoria of a reinforcer as uniquely powerful as crack will be followed by a "crash". This involves anxiety, depression, irritability, extreme fatigue and possibly paranoia. Physical health may deteriorate. An intense craving for more cocaine develops. In heavy users, stereotyped compulsive and repetitive patterns of behaviour may occur. So may tactile hallucinations of insects crawling underneath the skin ("formication"). Severe depressive conditions may follow; agitated delirium; and also a syndrome sometimes known as toxic paranoid psychosis. The neural aftereffects of chronic cocaine use include changes in monoamine metabolites and uptake transporters. There is down-regulation of dopamine D2 receptors to compensate for their drug-induced overstimulation. Thus the brain's capacity to experience pleasure is diminished.
The social consequences of heavy cocaine use can be equally unpleasant. Non-recreational users are likely eventually to alienate family and friends. They tend to become isolated and suspicious. Most of their money and time is spent thinking about how to get more of the drug. The compulsion may become utterly obsessive. The illusion of free-will is likely to disappear. During a "mission", essentially a 3-4 day crack-binge, users may consume up to 50 rocks a day. To obtain more, crack-addicts will often lie, cheat, steal and commit crimes of violence. Once-loved partners and children may be callously cast aside. Whole communities can be disrupted by crack-abuse. Whereas "empathogens" such as MDMA / Ecstasy - which trigger the release of more serotonin than dopamine - will typically promote empathy, trust, compassionate love and sociability, "dopaminergic" drugs such as cocaine or amphetamines, if taken on their own and to excess, can easily have the reverse effect. This story has complications - cocaine's affinity for the serotonin transporter is actually greater than for the dopamine transporter. But simplistically, cocaine tends to be a "selfish" drug.
There is perhaps a single predictable time of life when taking crack-cocaine is sensible, harmless and both emotionally and intellectually satisfying. Indeed, for such an occasion it may be commended. Certain estimable English doctors were once in the habit of administering to terminally-ill cancer patients an elixir known as the "Brompton cocktail". This was a judiciously-blended mixture of cocaine, heroin and alcohol. The results were gratifying not just to the recipient. Relatives of the stricken patient were pleased, too, at the new-found look of spiritual peace and happiness suffusing the features of a loved one as (s)he prepared to meet his or her Maker.
Drawing life to a close with a transcendentally orgasmic bang, and not a pathetic and god-forsaken whimper, can turn dying into the culmination of one's existence rather than its present messy and protracted anti-climax.
There is another good reason to finish life on a high note. In a predominantly secular society, adopting a hedonistic death-style is much more responsible from an ethical utilitarian perspective. For it promises to spare friends and relations the miseries of vicarious suffering and distress they are liable to undergo at present as they witness one's decline.
A few generations hence, the elimination of primitive evolutionary holdovers such as the ageing process and suffering will make the hedonistic death advocated here redundant. In the meanwhile, one is conceived in pleasure and may reasonably hope to die in it.
