New swell. Gorgeous, windless morning. A strange newt.
A New windswell arrived sometime last night and is infiltrating the beach with non-stop shoulder to head-high walls. No wind means relative glass on the sea-surface but the swell is a bit unruly and lumpy. However there are tons of rides on offer for both the long and shortboard crews. I watched a few crystalline barrels crack and peel along. A few more takers out there than in days past but still pretty empty. Fun drops and quick rides were the rule of the morning, with the occasional lined-up glassy face. I pulled back on this one overhead right because a seal was furiously swimming to catch the wave. Gotta let the true locals have their waves.
i agree with "klooless" that it was pretty fun and solid out there. Definitely not whitecapping! (who said that?) Definitely WAY WAY better than 98% of the days this summer.. which may not be saying much. This week has been RAD!
As I walked back up the road to my house after surfing I noticed what looked like a vermillion newt scamper under a fence and then into this old abandoned house. I followed the little bugger through the small front-yard and then up the steps to the doorway. He seemed to turn to look at me and then scurried into the house. I’d been curious about this house for years as it’s a genuine historical landmark. Built, along with hundreds of similar houses, to shelter San Franciscans who’d lost their homes during the earthquake and subsequent fires of 1908. For some reason it was moved to the Outer Sunset in the 20’s and is now abandoned and run-down and a bit spooky. The front door hung ajar so I decided to venture inside. I walked slowly, brushing away spider webs and sniffing the old mildew and age. I then saw the striking red newt again. This time it looked back at me momentarily before running down a flight of stairs into a basement. Funny, I thought, most of the homes out here don’t have basements. Huh.. but.. I walked over and began descending the steps. The steps and walls seemed much older than the 1920’s. Old, well-worn stone. It was very dark below and I could hear a faint dripping of water striking rock. I walked down about 20 steps and then was arrested by what sounded like the scraping of metal against metal far below. I then heard an in-human cackle.. then suddenly the door above me slammed shut and I was in complete darkness. The laughter below now turned to a building torrent of hideous mirth. A shrieking, voluminous war-cry. I felt a rush of heat and pungent fumes rise up from below. My heart was beating through my chest. I saw the newt rush up and run back up the stairs beneath my feet. I too turned and ran as the maniacal laughter rushed closer and closer. Something large and non human was running up the stairs and about to meet me. Something not of this world. I ran to the top of the steps and into a giant wooden door I hadn’t noticed before. It was locked. I couldn’t get out. I turned to face my onrushing tormentor. It was dark but a faint light snuck in between the panels of wood on the door. I could smell a ripe, decomposing odor waft up and could feel the pounding as this thing ran up the steps toward me. I heard again the scraping of metal. Now I could tell they were swords, or weapons of some sort. A moment later I saw a flash of teeth and flesh. A black eye set deep in a scorched, mangled face. A flash of blade. And end to life.

Pacifica surfer Greg Gubser is raising money for the Diabetic Youth Foundation by doing a long distance paddle: on Tuesday, September 14th, he'll depart Old Sacramento at 7:00am on a never-before-attempted distance paddle to the Golden Gate Bridge. It will take 2 days to complete (approximately 72 miles), and there will be a reception party at Station Golden Gate, Sausalito, CA on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 15th. All funds raised from the paddle, will go directly to the DYF so they can continue helping families affected by Diabetes.

is it not the total lack of indigeneous character and culture that allows one to feel comfortable speakin Pidgin, supposedly another culture's tongue? We are LOST culturally and those of us who question whether the World Series, DisneyLand, Hooters, the St Louis Arch and IHOP is enough to call a US Cultural Foundation find respite in established, colorful, dynamic cultures of others...see: every yin yang and "tribal" tattoo, Buddhisim, see "Hip Hop" Culture spanning all ethnicities, see our thirst for anything with Cultural Foundation that isnt American. Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at September 2, 2004 11:46 AMSteama--Are you being a little harsh? It sounds like your complaint is that there is too much culture in the US--some good (Jazz, dance forms), some questionable (Disneyland, midwestern jello-salad), some "junk" (Hooters, gansta' style anything). It's a big place we have here, so people seem to pick and choose what they identify with. Part of the beauty of an open society is that people can be exposed to a lot of "home grown" and imported cultural aspects and can choose to identify with them and even find like-minded people to hang with.
That said, I personally don't get the tribal tatoos on suburban guys in lowered pickup trucks or white kids throwing around ebonics. But, hey...what do I know.

Steama, on the fungus issue, the only things I have ever used are either O'Neills wetsuit conditioner/cleaner (can get it for like $5 at Sports Basement) or those little packets at the surf shops. that's a pretty good question actually...when i used to work at this snowboard shop back home there were a couple kids on the trustfund plan who were hooked up beyond most people's understanding...i'd name their last name, but it'd be a giveaway...they'd always roll thru around noon, 1 o'clock and want to get beers..."uhh, we're working dude"....one of the kids was going to try and fund his own f1 car on his money....they'd always roll up in new porsches, etc....i don't think their life lost meaning, but i DO know they had no concept of work ethic or value of money - whatever though, i always drank and ate for free!!
i'd hate on trust funders like everyone else, but dammit if that hate just ain't jealousy? i would fucking LOVE to be on a trust fund, travel the world, do whatever the fuck i wanted, when i wanted. live life like it's your last day, cuz one day you'll be right!

That's an interesting question E. IMO not necessarily but it is rare that you meet cool, soulful, world minded people that haven't had to work hard in their lives. I'm sure they are out there but probably an exception. Why is a good question?
Maybe cause the people who lead the most meaningful lifes know that the world doesn't revolve around them. Doing something you really don't want to b/c you have to, for years on end (ie work) can teach you that pretty quick. Or something like that.
Posted by: tucker at September 2, 2004 12:10 PMSorry to confuse you all on this board. I wasn't referring to anyone who uses this blog in particular when I made the fat fuck trust fund dork comment. This is someone I actually knew, who lucked into a trustfund in his late 20's.
This guy went from being semi cool, to being the most irratating asshole on the face of the earth once the money rolled in. The guy would just stuff his fucking face, spit on servers, throw away whole plates of food because it had something spicy in it. This guy turned into a fucking major dick cuz of the fund.
This same guy attempted to speak pidgin upon landing on the islands, which as I mentioned was the most pitiful thing ever. This fucking fuck wad was ordering people around, being a fucking prick and all and trying to think he was local. What a fucking fool.

3. Are actually being spoken TO, not AT.
youre lucky. If a local actually talks to you, and you tell them where you live (since most people aren't FROM where they live, I'm not) you may get an ounce of respect. The locals who don't have girthy sticks up their asses actually give it up for Northern California surfers (not Southern California though). Yes, it sucks that some cultures are a bit far behind on the "stereotyping is wrong" but the truth is, there are still people in the water who are very, very racist. Some things will never change though.

Did you just watch some horror flick or something like the People Under the Stairs" Your story reminds me of my childhood where we would sneak into abandon buildings all the time. When we were real young it was to play haunted house. Someone would sneak ahead or we'd arrange for some older guy to dress wierd and hide someplace. I recall one time when this back fired and the older dude came running out screaming like a little b*&^*ch. Some troll was sqattin and chased him out with a machete...we all were so scared we called the cops. Sucks there were like 3 homeless dudes livin in there and our prank got them arrested...
At an older age we would sneak in to smoke weed and drink MD 20/20, Richards Wild Rose, Night Train and eventually 40z. Doing this in outside during Chicago winters was not appealing so we took the party inside. We always had girlies willing to join us as well. Later this habit of sneaking into buildings became hazardous as crack imerged and people were over dosing, starting fires and stabbing each other in these tenaments. I recall finding an associate frozen stiff in a building we partied at for like a month.
Well I love your scarry story..you had me there for a while and I still dont go into abandoned homes alone....scares me.
As for the slamanders I was told that SF is the only Metro area that has them. I use to catch a bunch of them in the mish..cute little fucks..wonder if they would make good fishing bait?............

What is scary? Me with some wild rose? naw..you bet I am. What was really scary was that the associate remained frozed for like a week with other people partying about him before 5-0 finnaly showed and found him. He also had stab wounds, burns and other stuff that were inflicted after his death.
I dont like playing with dead bodies myself, but I am sure some of my good friends were responsible for the disicretion. We were like 12 or 13.

Speaking of inland fat fucks, I'm moving to Oakland at the end of the month, to join my hefty bretheren away from the chill of the ocean wind.
Anyone is interested in an apartment on 44th between Noriega and Ortega. Nice backyard, bathroom, kitchen, washer/dryer, cable modem. 5 minute walk to the beach, surf board rack in garage, and hose in front. Available Oct 1, maybe a couple days before that if I get off my fat inland ass and find a place.

What bothers me is our government is run by folks like my friend and those folks only apply.
Meanwhile 1/4 of the country is pretty much fucked and getting worse.

Posted by: Sutro D at September 2, 2004 02:16 PMwork sucks
While working up at Squaw during El Fatty Winter about 5 years back or so I worked with this one dude named J. He was a full on all american dude. Went to Yale, built pretty big, kinda annoying but for some reason he was a little slow with the speach. I found out later that after he had graduated from Yale he moved to the Islands. While driving in his jeep one day he flipped off the wrong dudes and they ended up pulling him from the jeep. Locals beat him up so bad he almost died, they left him in the middle of the road with a crushed skull. Brain damage, loss of hearing, slow speach and no job opps cause he lost the critical thinking skills needed.
Now I realize when you are flipping people off you are walking a thin line and you never know who is gonna come back and get you for it. But I couldn't imagine in my most pissed off, hell raging temper, of being able to hurt someone that bad. What is the deal with Violence on the islands? You would think it is compton out there.
Posted by: kookdom at September 2, 2004 02:22 PMkookdom, by thinking and trying to imagine you are already putting yourself out of the realm of understanding these guys. Nice you can be coherent and wordy about your sad story but strength and balls are all that count here. My logic is my fist. You have strength and balls, you'll do alright.
Posted by: fooj at September 2, 2004 02:31 PMtotally different j, for all those inquiring minds. you think my ass could get into yale?!?!? hahahahahahaahahaha!!
Posted by: j at September 2, 2004 02:33 PMaltho i don't deny being annoying and slow in the speech!
Posted by: j at September 2, 2004 02:33 PMsunny came to mainland flipped some dudes off and got his ass handed to him.
ran home to the islands like a little bitch, brah
his fist did him no good here.
but he smacked liam macnamara good. too bad the camera did not show liam in a cast up to his waist after his surgery for the broken femur.
hawaiians aint no tougher than any other neighborhodd tougie.

Posted by: fooj at September 2, 2004 02:38 PMThat's funny fooj, in all my travels and meetings of many people (including great people in the islands) it all came down to mutual respect. You give it, you get it.
Strength and Balls is what you need come november at OB. That and a 7'6" pintail.
Posted by: kookdom at September 2, 2004 02:38 PMGuess you gotta watch out on the 280 drive too!
Posted by: 280 at September 2, 2004 02:44 PMWhat's up with that? Guy's car full of bullet holes
Speaking of Liam Macnamera, I saw him kick some dudes ass at china walls once. He threw the guy over the cliff and he hit his leg on something and it broke. The guy was all pounded with a broken leg in the water. My friend went out and saved him, which is not easy if you know the setup.
It was funny watching Sunny smack the guy in the little mini series. Liam looks like a meth head nowadays.

Posted by: at September 2, 2004 02:50 PMBack to our regularly scheduled programming.....
Surf - Ok, I will give it up to those that said it is warm, fun, bowly, worth-it, sunny, hot, nuggety, uber fun, mellow, good, decent, etc....
But, the surf was not CLEAN! No, not clean. Fun, yes. Clean, no. A workout, yes. Clean, no.
So, it is not clean out there but it is fun. Also, I think boardshorts are coming out. Is it worth it for a $60 neo-jacket if you can surf in board shorts? It's gotta be right?
Ok, and here is some entertainment for all of you who claim you have had sex with girls in Hawaii, who mack barrels, who "shoot the curl" or whatever the fuck the boasting is all about. BTW, say Bagel at the beach, he is board a plane right about now for Costa. I wish him luck......... Elias, let's ride his board while he is gone.

Posted by: Kaiser at September 2, 2004 02:52 PMPlay nice, or.....
Did OB last year in January. Foot for foot the power matches the Country. Yes, strength and balls, and a good wetsuit too. The cold water feels heavier, is it?
Posted by: fooj at September 2, 2004 02:55 PMJanuary this year.
Posted by: fooj at September 2, 2004 02:56 PMHey, where you guys going?

Posted by: Kaiser at September 2, 2004 03:01 PMAnother time in Hawaii my friend was renting a jet ski for tow in off of these locals who live in the jungle. My friend forgot to strap the jetski to the trailer on the way out and it fell onto the parking lot.
The dudes in the jungle sayd give me $5000 for new ski brah! My friend didn't have any money but his friend was local and grew up with the jungle dude and they made a deal to pay $5000 in a week.
Sooo, my friend had to come up with $5000 and he's this lifegard at Turtle Bay. So this celebrity dudes goes up to my lifeguard friend and says show me the hard core shit.
So my lifeguard friend takes this celebrity guy out on an innertube towed by a ski out at phantoms. The celebrity guy eats shit and gets hurt and almost drowns. The staff at Turtle bay hear about this and fire him.
He's now on the mainland, but no worries cuz the jungle guys only go to Vegas if anywhere, so he's fine.

Pretty cool! You should have CLAIMED it.
Now, once again, back to our regularly scheduled program:

Posted by: Kaiser at September 2, 2004 04:32 PMNBC'S new Drama Hawaii is going to blow North Shore out of the water. This show is awesome!! Hawaii is well represented by "Hawaii". North Shore could take lessons. Next Monday, the shows will be head to head. Good luck North Shore, you're going to need it, Lol!
Posted by: at September 2, 2004 04:33 PMI really don't think it will make a difference!!
For one, Hawaii is an high action show where NS is more of a drama (soap opera type) therefore they target 2 different groups of people
Secondly, people can watch them both... NS is on at 8pm and Hawaii is on at 9pm so people don't have to choose between each of them!!
What I don't understand is if you hate NS sooo much, ewhy are you wasting your time on this website?? (This is a retorical question btw....no need to answer me back!!)
Posted by: at September 2, 2004 04:34 PMThat is true, the shows are on two seperate times, and they are slating Wednesday night for Hawaii, they are just showing in one time on Monday Sept. 6. It is in the line up for Wednesday. It is a great show but as you said..2 completely different types of show. North Shore's fan base is getting stronger so I don't thinks they need to worry at all.
Posted by: at September 2, 2004 04:35 PM2544.5 in reply to 2544.4
North Shore don't have anything to worry about.
Hawaii is all about killing and action packed chaos.
NS is all about sex and Drama. BIG difference.
North Shore still ROcks alot better then hawaii though. because it has Jason Momoa! :o)
Posted by: at September 2, 2004 04:36 PMWhat's up with the chick on the left in the front? Talk about bitter beer face..
