Out of the loop.. but.. I saw white caps

Most signs point toward mediocrity today. Onshore wind blowing gently but consistently, small piddly windswell lapping up onto the beach, white-caps in the outer water. Seems that our 2004 summertime conditions have returned. While I’m not that psyched on the onshores, I’m super-psyched about the return of the cool weather. Bikinis are wonderful and all.. but sweating onto my keyboard as I work all day I could do without. Awesome whale stories from everyone yesterday. Here are some highlights:

I was surfing alone at 'white trashes' last night and this loc ness monster thing surfaced 20 feet away…
I'm pretty sure it was a juvinile whale, but it was kind of skinny and darker than a normal gray whale. I know grays pretty well from spring sessions. It kind of had spots or barnicles, but it was bony and monster like. Maybe 30 feet long.
- Biff

Biff that was probably a baby humpback that put the willies up you. I've been watching them for the last week or so going north. Sometimes they'll locate a school (I presume anchovies), sound for a couple of minutes and then launch. They make bubble nets deep down that drive the fish to the surface and corral them. Up come the whales and boom! Bloody cool to watch if you can catch them when they're here. We see them each September (we're up the Manor cliffs, a great spt to watch them), then the grays go south in about Nov thru Jan, returning around April-June. If you want to see 'em, set yourself up on a cliff with a comfy seat, a few beers, a book and some bino's. Just keep watching and you'll likely see 'em between 1/4 to 3/4 mile out.
You really gotta love California when it offers that kind of action in an urban area.
- NZ swell

Btw if you're ever down Baja way in around February head out to San Ignacio Lagoon. They'll take you out from the fish camps and you'll be totally surrounded by mums and babies. I even got a spout in the face. Great spot to camp too, there are so many out there that you hear them breathing at night if it's still. Bugger of a road though. San Ignacio village is a great spot to stay as well, a beautiful mission.
- NZ swell

I had a grey surface about 30 ft away from me one time. Scared the shiznitz outta me. Those fokkers are big and covered with barnacles. It's way scarier when you see a break in the surface expecting to see a seal and you see something the size of, well, a whale.
- Andrew on 44th

many years ago surfing the homeland i saw a whale surface 25 yds. away. There was a begginer that actually got caught in the "wake" of the surfacing whale and kinda bounced off the side of the animal. It terrified the guy and was the last time I ever saw him in the water again.
snorkeling off maui, high on mushrooms a pod crusied within the visibility range of me and my freind cruising the reef. it was beautiful, a bit un-nerving and quite a humbling expereince. my freind, she was really into whales and solid free diver just started swimming toward them. i followed but the whales soon dissappered. it was rad and we felt really connected to them cause we were naked too.
- 3to5setsof7

Last spring a mother gray and her two babies kept surfacing slowly and eyeing me. Maybe 30 feet away or so. The babies and I kind of stared at each other. They were as interested in me as me them. I'm sure they were thinking I'm some alien doing some weird magical shit on these waves every now and then. I see them out there all the time. Sometime I think I can communicate with them, but that's another story.
- biff

Also really cool to hear all the stories about music on the beach while you’re out in the lineup surfing. One time while surfing Kuta beach they were preparing for a contest and were blasting all this ACDC and Zeppelin. Pretty schweet.

OB: is it mostly cloudy, choppy, onshore-y, and blowsy? Yes! But is it surfable? YES IT IS. With lotsa caloric expenditure and a go-with-the-flow mood, rides are snatchable. Knee to waist with crunchy wanna-close shoulder sets. Klooless got a solid handful w/the shortboard. I dragged my space shuttle out and actually got a couple of really spiffy backhands or backdoors or whatever the heck it is when you're goofy and go right. Nobody else out now..gee I wonder why?! But minor mojo is there if you insist and erase the memory of last weekend.

some years back in daytona beach there was this massive manta ray that surfaced at a popular break. one poor soul happened to be right above the ray when it breeched and was completely lifted out of the water. eventually the ray submerged itself, but only after giving the surfer a little 'magic carpet ride'.

Any more details on the BOOGEY contest! I must say that the NICENESS crew is truly NICE for the limited amount of wisecracks that were made the other day. I did not hear any of the following: TEABAG, DICK DRAGGER, CRIPPLE, SPEED BUMP, LID... Thanks.

but i'm down for the spectrum some "kill 'em all" and sometimes a tribal drum jam....

Another sea monster story.

Surfing near diamond head one day a portagee man o war surfaced and I lightly brushed it with my arm as I paddled.

At first it stung a little bit, no big deal. 20 seconds later it felt like someone was repeadly smashing my arm with a sledgehammer. My eyes were rolling back, things turning black, so I decided to go in.

Got back on land, my arm was pouring sweat where the portagee hit it. Sweat was just dripping only in that spot, weird. The pain was the worst I ever experienced, I was shaking, felt like I was going to die any minute.

So being smart, I drive home in this condition. Could have killed countless people, lucky I did not. I was thinking about pulling over and dying on the sidewalk, but why not die at home?

20 minutes later still about to die of pain. Get home, jump in the shower and pee on my arm. Instant relief, sorta!

I was still in pain 2-3 days later, couldn't lift anything and had a nasty scar going on for a couple months.

Manowars are fricking sketchy.

Posted by: allen at September 10, 2004 11:11 AM

Yup, you stand on the beachwall and slowly realize that every adjective that you can think of to describe the weekend is now totally inapplicable. But then you see a wave and think, but if I were RIGHT THERE I wouldn't be complaining, would I? You paddle out and confront a good dozen waves, taking most of them on the head because duck-diving is too good for them. You finally zigzag between a few OB wandering wavelets, and there you are, amid the churning, white-capping windy squalor, and you realize the chances of being RIGHT THERE are woefully small. You grab a few slow drops to not-much, followed by paradoxically long paddles, and decide to call it a day after "one more ride". So you settle in for the hour that this typically might involve, when, holy smokes, you seem actually to be RIGHT THERE, and you drop from shoulder high into a right that is actually walling up for you just right, looking like something you haven't seen since Saturday. So you attack, and, drawing on your special surfing magic, fail to make a section early on as you watch the niiiiice wave taunt you well into the distance.

Posted by: Klooless at September 10, 2004 11:14 AM

cool reality check.. i actually have that copy of TSJ at home (it's Robme's).. i'll check it out after work today and report back on monday.

i got stung by a man o war on my right bicep surfing hookipa. the pain started pulsing up my arm, couldn't paddle. i gimp in, get to the shower to rinse off. suddenly i feel this warm stream hitting my arm. i turn around and victor lopez is pissing on my arm, laughing telling me that it will help, along with using Larry's meat tenderizer on the wound. 2 weeks later i'm windsurfing with this french woman and she get's stung. after i get her rig on shore she say's "3to5 can you pee on me, I can't reach the sting? i oblige but i confess it was no turn on to piss on the back of her thigh. however, rubbing in the larry's tenderizer, now that's another story.........

nice pics jeff! great to have the whale recap too, thanks e. 2 more large-creatures-surfacing-near-me-in-the-water-stories:

i remember back when i was a young lad very nearly shitting myself as a manatee surfaced under me dangling my feet over the side of my grandfather's small fishing boat out in the gulf of mexico. he told me and my cousin that it probably thought our feet was bait.

and back in mid-90's i went on a canoe trip down the zambezi river in zimbabwe. we were only 20 minutes into the trip, with the warnings of the 2 biggest dangers (crocs & hippos) still fresh in our minds when the canoe in front of me was lifted up in the air by a foot or two. what the???!!! turned out that a hippo had surfaced under it, probably unkowingly. we all scrambled for the reeds and hopped out of our canoes, praying that the hippo would not respond aggresively and pretty much ignoring the risk of crocs in the reeds. hippos are vegetarians but very protective of turf, and their jaws are more than amply powerful to kill humans. the canoe wound up with a slight crack but all was well. amazing trip - visually overwhelming. nothing like the sound of a lion roaring after making a kill.

Posted by: loon at September 10, 2004 11:39 AM

adolph's meat tenderizer is the BOMB
for jellyfish, man o' war stings and bees too.

highly recommend for any tropical trip.

and pissing works great too.

other tip re: jelly and man o wars....the palms
of the hands CANNOT be stung (no hair folicles(sp?))
so IF you do get one of the buggers near you...you
can push it away....or huck them at your friends....

Greetings folks! Here is the situation, my sister is getting married on Maui in May of next year. She is being married in or near the Napili Kai Resort. My options are to either get accomodations there for ($200 / night / rediculous!) or to find alternative accomodation for hopefully cheaper. So I put it out to the NICENESS crew to see if you all have any suggestions for me - perhaps a house to rent for a week - if that is cheaper? Who knows! You all helped me out with Baja, I'm sure you can help me out with this one. Thanks in advance.

Looks like I'm quitting this job and heading South...

The South Pacific storm track has really become active in the last few days and it isn't forecast to quiet down much in the next week. A very strong storm is expected to form SE of New Zealand and push toward South America in the next few days setting up a large swell for Mainland Mexico and Central America. Surfline Forecast Charts are already indicating that the storm will have wide areas of fetch with winds in the 40-50+ knot range and LOLA is already starting to show the resulting swell in her long-range Swell Tracking Charts

Its always funny when a picture gets posted and it has no name but yet someone comes in and spoils the fun. If the name is never "named" will people really know what it is? If you don't "name" the "name", those that don't know will never know while the ones that do know, can peacefully enjoy something they know about.

Get it?

I used to ba a local at the Jetty in the 80's. A friend of mine put this big azz jelly fish on his head like a cap. Then it stung him. It wasn't a big deal. I don't remember if he even got out of the watter. Funny as hell though....

Posted by: pimping eg pimp at September 10, 2004 12:42 PM

First counterexample to "irishmen rip":

Posted by: Klooless McKook at September 10, 2004 12:48 PM

A buddy, Elan, and I were out at sloat last year when a larger jellyfish floated by. After giving it a few prods I determined it did not sting and seeing as I had run into a number of non-stinging jellyfish in the caribbean, it was decided that a good laugh was in order... after picking up the jellyfish, I turned to Elan, "Hey look at me!" Well the little tentacles on these babies that hang below the jellyfish, they are the part that sting. As I put the seat cushion sized jelly on my head like a crown, the tentacles draped over my eyes and down my face. Elan claims I cried out like a baby, I am sure it was more of a manly roar. Anyway, I couldn't see for a good half an hour or so.

I had trouble seeing and lining up waves, but that was it. And when I told the cute japanese babe I met surfing later that day the story, (I thought it was pretty damn funny), she gave me a bum number. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be an idiot. :) Elan and I still laugh about it.

The Sonos device looks somewhat interesting, but it seems to me like you'd need to have a sick, multi-zone stereo to take advantage of it - otherwise, it's overkill. Just hook your computer up to your stereo and TV instead and navigate onscreen with the wireless mouse. Although, I suppose it would also be nice to have a little portable hardware device to navigate your music library instead of using a keyboard at a desk. $$$$ too.

Just to add to Bird's story, last weekend after a splendid wipe, I get this safeway bag stuck on face. Then I realize it's not a water-filled plastic bag, but an inside out jelly fish. Lucky, I was on the "heads" side of it, and only the "tails" side stings. I still can't figure out how buddy was intact. I woulda though the waves woulda pounded him into individual jelly servings that you get in the diner.

I also stepped on a crab while trunking it last Friday. Buddy didn't get me back, though. But I was scared without my wetsuit armor. My assesment of the situation is that we've got fewer crabs than we did a month ago at this time, but maybe I've just adjusted better and aren't as freaked by them.

Final thought is for the niceness party. Backyards involve clean-ups and bars are missing the outdoor element that brings the niceness folk together. I say next Friday, we get our wetsuits, boards, and a barbeque on an inner tube and hit McCovey Cove behind PacBell. If someone catches Bond's 700, it'll be worth like $20k. That'll buy alot of PBR.

Better idea on BBQ afloat: you don't want your board to get dinged by kayakers from Fremont, so why not be safe and pick up $1.99 water wings at Target? Nothing like getting 'faced in bay with organge floaties on each side. Maybe one of those yellow inner tubes with the horsey heads to hang a bag of potato chips from.

Screw annoying banner ads. We should get paid to fit in product references subtly. Like, "I was surfing over at M**** this morning. Clean 5-6 ft faces, just perfect for my Surftech board, and man, I gotta say that board is light and tough and makes my penis look bigger." Else we can just photoshop the Dominos Noid into the back of every bikini shot.

of the things I am most proud of is the way we have begun to unite coastal
activists from all 1,100 miles of California’s coastline. No other
organization has been so successful at creating this kind of community for
coastal protection. Our 5,000 member coastal network, stretching from
Eureka to San Diego, is working together to protect our fragile coast for
future generations.

I believe that while California’s coast is long and diverse, its
protection matters to all Californian’s no matter where they live. If the
waters in San Diego’s Mission Bay are polluted, then that matters to us
all. What happens in San Diego could happen at my favorite beach, and
even if I happen to live 500 miles away, San Diego’s beaches are still my
beaches too. My children and my children’s children deserve the
opportunity to enjoy them.

Likewise, if the Hearst Corporation is close to finalizing a deal that
will set a new low standard for land conservation statewide, a deal that
threatens California’s coast with diminished public access and with
development, drilling and mining, all at taxpayer’s expense then that
matters to us throughout California. And all of us have a responsibility
to speak out!

Great Coastal Places Campaign members are doing just that. Let me
introduce you to Patricia Wiley who has been a Sierra Club member for a
number of years, but I first met her when the Great Coastal Places
Campaign met near her home in San Diego earlier this summer. Patricia
shares our concern for the bad deal that Hearst has proposed and the state
of California’s rush to sign on. But for Patricia it is not enough to
just send an email or make a phone call. PATRICIA IS TRAVELING FROM SAN
DIEGO TO JOIN ME AT THE NEXT HEARST HEARING IN SONOMA ON SEPTEMBER 15TH!
As a taxpayer and as someone who has spent 40 years vacationing on
California’s coast, Patricia feels a responsibility to take time out of
her busy life to speak out to ensure this deal gets improved. Hearst’s
mansions will be constructed out of Patricia’s sightlines, but loss of
coastal protection hurts us all, and Patricia is stepping up to help!

Won’t you join us? Join Patricia and me on Wednesday, September 15th in
Windsor for the Coastal Conservancy board meeting where final decisions
will be made for this deal.

If you can be in Sonoma after lunch on the 15th, send me an email to
savethecoast@sierraclub.org and I will get you more information.

If you can’t make it to the hearing, you can still help. Write a letter
today, (or copy and paste the letter below) and send it to me at
savethecoast@sierraclub.org by Monday, September 13th, and Patricia and I
will deliver it to the Coastal Conservancy. And while you are at it, SEND
THIS EMAIL TO A FRIEND OR THREE! Ask them to join you in helping to
protect our Great Coastal Places. With all the money and influence that
the Hearst Corporation has, we need all the help we can get.

Thank you

Mark

Dear Coastal Conservancy Chair Morabito,

As a member of Sierra Club’s 5,000 member strong Great Coastal Places
Campaign, I am troubled by how close the state of California is to
finalizing a deal for the Hearst Ranch which will grant taxpayer money in
exchange for diminished public access, the construction of a hotel and
mansions and new oil and gas drilling and mining.

Before the Hearst Corporation is given $95 million of taxpayer money, I
believe it is essential that the state see and approve the Management Plan
in order to ensure that the land will be adequately protected, as well as
demand direct State enforcement of the easements.

I also believe that Public Access must be protected west of Highway 1
without restrictions on numbers, hours, days or the requirement for guided
access, that the Coastal Trail be sited as close to the coast as possible,
and that access to the historic San Carpoforo Trail on the east side of
Highway 1 be guaranteed.

Additionally the granting of new mineral extraction and water transfer
must be eliminated from any deal that uses land conservation bond money.

California’s taxpayers have the right to expect that the state keep the
public interest in the forefront of any deal even if it means turning down
the requests of influential corporations. The deal as it is proposed does
not meet this standard, and I look to you and the State Coastal
Conservancy to protect this beautiful land for future generations.

I went out to MCovey cove on a longboard for the last game of 2001. It was pretty fun. It was very crowded and boats were jammed together at the most likely landing spots, so I paddled around on the edges. Bond's 73th homer didn't make it into the cove, but I saw it float in the air for a second.

so what's this news about seagulls in the bay area have the highest about of flame retardant PBDE's in the world? does this mean they won't burst in flames if somebody throws a burning ember on 'em?

but seriously, is this a health issue for surfers in the bay area? "...they can be toxic to the immune system and can affect neurobehavioral development..." that doesn't sound good.

Posted by: caveman at September 10, 2004 06:03 PM

I was surfing at Bolinas once and I saw a whale spout just outside. I paddled out there and caught up to it. It was a baby grey but as it passed under me it seemed as big as a bus. What was amazing is that it was less than three feet below me but it didn't make a ripple as it moved swiftly under my board. As he went on his way his tail fin came up and hit the bottom of my board with a solid thunk as if to say, "I know you're there". And then he was gone.

Please be on the lookout for the following items which were stolen from my truck:

1) Sonor Sonic Plus 14" Snare Drum natural wood color. It was in an old case with a nice 2x brace snare stand. Just replaced snare on bottom and new Evans head on top.

2) Ludwig Acrolite 14" Snare silver color. It also was in a crappy old case with a nice 2x brace snare stand.

The Sonor snare was a part of a kit that looks like this photo (same exact color):
