windy.. not happenin at local beaches
Welcome to the week. The wind started picking up steam yesterday morning and it hasn’t stopped raging since then. Total white-cappage out there but not much in the way of significant size or girth coming through. With a kiteboard you could probably cover some serious ground but for us non-wind-assisted surfers it looks pretty bleak. If you’re super-hella jonesin’ somewhere like the Lane or the Hook might be your only bet (5pm 2ft low tide). Lots of local wind.. not much fetch. Maybe if California and Nevada disappeared from the earth and the ocean had another 800 miles of distance there might be waves generated from these winds on the west coast of Utah. Might be 5ft 12 seconds instead of 6ft 7seconds. But.. lot a good that does us. Word on the street is that the Linda Mar Ladies Surf-Off (not sure it’s real name) went down in small but glassyish conditions. Not only did the ladies represent, but many a dude was sighted sporting hot-pink dental-floss thongs barely covering hairy derriers. Umm.. Soo.. watch out for that action.
Many beautiful people could be found at the Peace festival on Saturday in Golden Gate Park. Lots of Playa dust. String Cheese and Spearhead radiated tunes throughout the flocking throngs of hippies, golden children and SF chillers dancing and laughing in the refreshing fog-licked sunshine. (Jake.. I ran into OC! He ended up staying with that girly in Guatemala City for a few weeks! Ha! Then to Belize, Mexico and Cuba. He just got back to the States.)
So then Robme, Kaiser Sose and myself checked out Aussie crooner Xavier Rudd at the Great American last night. The dood can definitely throw down on multiple instruments at once. Lap guitar, didj, harmonica, various drums, strange mysterious bass-drum box-thing, homemade wooden instruments, etc. As soon as dude put his mouth on the didg the audience started dancing. every time. He was great but what really wowed me was how into it the crowd was. I’ve been to hundreds and hundreds of shows, and I’ve rarely ever seen a crowd so riveted and transfixed. A flock of college-aged lassies danced with abandon all around the stage, shouted encouragement and pouted flirty looks toward Xavier all night. At one point there was a call and response between Xavier and the crowd and the crowd sang really loud and surprisingly right on key. Some good singers up in there. When Xavier finished his set.. the whole place started jumping up and down, pounding the floor and going bananas for him to come back out. It was crazy.. I mean.. he was good and all.. but. I saw Charlie Hunter there a few weeks back and Charlie made this cat look like a total amateur.. but.. the crowd doesn’t seem to care whether a musician can hit 800 various chord substitutions while alternating chromatic phrasing and whipping through complex modal inversions. They just want smiles and vibes and the basic groove. Which Xavier happily provided. It was cool. He has a nice voice too.. But.. that chick who opened for him… I was ready to hit the gong! Gong-show style. Made me cringe.
old-schooler Rocky from Marin sent me this photo of his friend at OB along with these words:
"Here's one for you............. You can classify this in the over 50 (age, not feet) department. This is OB guy Jack Martinelli @ Sloat, 52 years old. Geezer?, Not yet!"
regarding the surf: AAAAAAAGH
regarding BVB: Thank you for the schooling in Hawaiian affairs; I expect that your alignment with the movement is helping it make great strides. Hope you enjoyed the swingers last week and above all thank you for helping me and all the others here surmount the cold reality that we know nothing.
Posted by: goodmorning at September 13, 2004 10:35 AMSo how WAS that festival in GG Park. That was my escape for the years i lived in the Haight. Man, i miss that first little part of the park with the hill close to the playground etc. 4/20 in that park used to be sooo much fun and good vibes.
Surf was FUN,although smallish, this morning. Glassseeee.
Posted by: Hb at September 13, 2004 10:39 AMsloat was solid yesterday, had fun despite the wind and got a workout from the strong current. saturday was small and OK on the north end. the neo-hippy traffic to and from the beach on saturday and sunday was horrible. had to restrain myself from running down a few dave fans. "crash into me" fo'reals...
Posted by: bbr at September 13, 2004 10:54 AMwell...it seems what we're lackin' in surf we're makin' up for in good flowin' vibes. hit DMB's charity bene concert (yep...the same one that caused bbr traffic headaches) in GG yesterday with my lady, Marco, and a couple of his amigos. i'm not usually a big fan of the big concert (i typically find it a bit too impersonal), but this was a sweet event for certain. beautiful weather, good tunes/sound, and smiles and niceness emanating from everyone despite the sea of humanity. a sweet Sunday (oh...that started with a slop-fest south of town in the drizzle that was better than it looked...not that that's saying much!).
Posted by: ck at September 13, 2004 11:03 AMIf that pic is from Rocky V. he's no slouch in the over 50 category either. Like me he rides huge boards but he's out there when it counts!
Posted by: kdalle at September 13, 2004 11:12 AMwent out south of Pacifica with a buddy, only guys out...looked chest high but had some well overhead waves, thick and meaty pushovers with nice steep drops and real bottom turns. Lots of rockin' rollin' between sets. Got out of the water and it looked so small, so strange, the height perception between onshore and actually being out there.
QUESTION: Can anyone please explain why OB is white capped to the horizon, but four miles south there are no whitecaps and the surf is cleaner?
Posted by: hee hee at September 13, 2004 11:17 AMno way e! i can't believe you saw OC! he was doing well? i had heard he saw that lady friend (or "Mom") in guatemala city... good stuff! the rest of his travels sound sweet, can't wait to hear what's up from him. by the way, i'm traveling with kristen right now, and she say's What's up. she also passes you the queen of spades.
thanks for the invite to e's surf palace... i probably will be homeless when I arrive in Cali. and thanks for the motivation 3to5. I talked to my surf consultant Kaiser Sose last night, and he said it's cool for me to take my euro surf trip this oct/nov, leading up to my return to the golden state in the beginning of december. at which point my west side natty's shack will open doors for niceness.
so here's a sweet picture:
and a link to a video of the above action from Hurricane Frances in South Beach a week ago.
I'm getting ready for at least windswell from Ivan this week, and might try to charge some pre-landfall swell on the Panhandle tomorrow. later!
Posted by: jake at September 13, 2004 11:24 AMToday looks grim indeed. Yesterday was surfable; OB looked too wild for my blood in the early am, so I found myself at a small protected spot where, if you could get past the unfriendly shore-pound, there were pretty frequent, thick waves. I kookishly estimate 8ft faces on the sets? At the outside of my comfort level, anyway. With the wind they weren't hollow or clean, but still provided lots of zip. Only a handful of other sufers there; most people seemed to be battling for close-outs at Ram Adnil.
Later yesterday I surfed near a bowling alley where my kid was at a party. Surfable head-high stuff that had shape near the channel (some guys were slaloming among the rocks along the channel, even--first time I'd seen that), but wayyyyy too crowded there, including kooks more kooky even than I, so I hung where there were mainly close-outs and rollers, and had mostly a paddling/duck-diving workout. I start to think my duck-diving is improving, and then a non-small day comes along to prove me wrong.

BVB any help here?
Posted by: at September 13, 2004 12:18 PME, Robme: nice grabbing the concert with you guys last night. Good music, good times.
I thought Xavier played his ass off and it was a really good show! Pretty cool how that guy can look like a circus act with his setup but bring some solid tunes. The crowd was into it for sure.
Surf? Well, we need those fine N, NE winds to pick up right about now and start grooming the juice we got. Looks like there is some more powerful juice on the way for around the 19th or 20th. Looks plenty big for me. I am sure B-Stah will have something to say about that.
Looking forward to SPROUT this weekend. Looks good. Also, the Boost Mobile is suppose to run from the 15th to the 20th. Pro HOOOOOOO's............
Posted by: Kaiser at September 13, 2004 12:21 PMi thought they surfed good in florida?
Posted by: at September 13, 2004 12:22 PMThe Dave Matthews concert created a vacuum over by the Balboa Thtr--where they're still showing Riding Giants. If you haven't seen it yet, check it out. Really great footage from the early days of big wave surfing. Very impressive. Those early pioneers really had BALLS of STEEL. Of course, the newer footage is pretty amazing too, but it's nice to see surfing culture at it's beginning--when it was less aggro and more spontaneous.
Posted by: amigoism at September 13, 2004 12:38 PMAll this talk reminds me, A very good friend of mine is coming back from some extended (9mos) travels in S America, he needs a cheap room in the hood, under 500$. He is a cool guy, surfer, computer illiterate, well traveled, shaper.. etc. Let me know if anyone has anything.
Also I put up a new page of pics, included one I dug up of Christian's girlfriend Anastasia...

Posted by: e at September 13, 2004 01:00 PMStahzie (anastasia) is reggie...and I think she prefers her red pintail in those type waves.
But I can tell it's not her 'cause she usually takes off much deeper than that guy in that pic!
Posted by: tomstah at September 13, 2004 01:03 PMI guess its not her, but it is a woman not a guy, oh well I'll take it down later. Or maybe I switched the slide around, I'll check later.
Posted by: mexi at September 13, 2004 01:06 PMthis "old guy" rips the lane at size....or at least he got more waves from deeper than I did on one really good day a while back on his lime green pearson arrow...nice shot bruce (i'm checking pics here at lunch)

Posted by: tomstah at September 13, 2004 01:09 PMi do agree, anonymous, there is a lot of kooky surfing in that video, but they probably look as good as we would... i always find it a rough transition to go from watching pro video all the time to seeing the reality of home video... doesn't look quite as stylish as it feels. i'd happily kook along one of those waves though. bet they felt damn nice.
Posted by: j.o.c. at September 13, 2004 01:11 PMkaiser, e: dudes, that was totally fun kickin' it at the show. Xavier was a pretty decent groove I thought, those didges are pretty sick. You're right -- no Charlie Hunter, but the beats were highly dancable, perfect for the last night of the weekend. But, wow, the females in the crowd were like totally transported. I guess they *really* liked him.
The beach looked pretty ragged at 10, though you might could imagine something fun somewhere in the middle. At least it was sunny.

Uh-um... Dear Anon Wanderer:
The way is clear despite what the Goverment propaganda tells you..
Smoke more pot and you will find that The Way is whatever it is we know already - all your youthful efforts to "achieve" and "become smarter" are nothing more than ripples upon the waters of life expanding outwards into infinity towards old age. As a surfer you should understand this.
Achievment and ambition are nothingness.

I'm one of the guy's that scooped up a nice portion of the soft core phish and grateful dead audience. You know the type, the ones that went to college, joined a fraternity and smoked marijuana a couple times and called themselves cool.
But they never got down with the hallucinagenics. But it's all good now 'cause they became rich and they laid out their blanket with their boss and his wife and talked about the good old day's at Stanford.
Usually they pay me $150 a ticket but I figured I'd throw 'em a free one 'cause the Dead did it all the time.
Posted by: Dave Mathews at September 13, 2004 01:38 PMe...you're blowin' my cover! ; ) that pic was from some weeks back when my lady and i shared some tiny, but glassy and fun waves with Bruce and a couple of his buds. i was on a borrowed mini-log (my lady's) and luvin' the glide! of course, hopefully one day i'll learn to do more than simply trim down-the-line! in the meantime, i'll continue to simply enjoy the good times. thanks for spurrin' the memory of a fine day.
Posted by: ck at September 13, 2004 01:43 PMwalked through GG park yesterday, tried hard to listen to that Dave Matthews Band music, every song sounds the same, followed by a long jam at the end, just like phish, the greatful dud, and santana, then i heard him announce santana was onstage, that song went for like 20 more minutes, generic, maybe I have ADD, or ADHD, but that type of jam-music all sounds the same to me, the same lick, similar cords, a little lead guitar solo, throw in a sax every other song, etc, etc, like a run-on-sentence, maybe i need a little more exposure to drum circles to figure it all out........................
please dont take offense, I am not criticizing any of you, I dont need to hear anyone defending Dave Matthews or the frat scene music he makes.

Posted by: south of pacifica at September 13, 2004 02:56 PMPfft!!! Dave Matthews and String Cheese Incident and whoever the hell else was playing made me want to kill. Fucking hypocritical hippy bullshit. I live in the Richmond, but work in the Sunset. Getting from one side of the park to another was a frickin' nightmare. I got off work around 6pm on Saturday, just as the fun was letting out. People are trying to cross the street like they're in some small migratory herd to which the normal rules of traffic don't apply. It made me feel like I was in college again where when some yahoo steps one foot on the curb you're supposed to cease movement entirely. Not here, not in this city, baby. One cluster of jam band geeks started lurching out on to Fulton around 25th and I came about 2 inches form clipping one of them with my mirror. Then, as I'm searching for parking in my normally easy-to-park section of the Richmond, I witness one dude throw a flyer off his hood onto the street, another chick flick a half smoked cig into the gutter, and one last chick ball up her gum in a wrapper and throw it on the sidewalk (why ball it up in a wrapper if your going to throw it on the sidewalk anyway). I took great pleasure in walking right next her and picking up her little treasure and moving on without saying a word as she looked miffed. So much for the supposed earthy, caring, "love for the environment" nature of the group: I thought it was quite ironic as I saw hordes of tie-dyed wannabe hippies in Tevas talking on their cell phones as they walked and acting as the world revolved around them. Fucking hypocrites.

Just because someone has a tie-die shirt and sandals doesn't mean that they're any particular type of person (environmentalist, peace-lover, republican, etc).. it just means that they're wearing a t-shirt with a particular arrangement of colors and open-air shoes.. that's all.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at September 13, 2004 03:41 PMI agree with you on the tie-dye thing, E. Just because I wear a shirt that says "I rape babies" while carrying a hacksaw doesn't mean I'm a bad guy. It's just an outward appearance. You appearance never actually is supposed to communicate anything about you or your values as a person, right? I mean, clothing, hair, accessories and such are some of the truest was to express yourself. But just because you wear a tie-dye, have larvae nesting in your dreads, and you reek of a mix of B.O., patchouli, and various forms of drugs doesn’t mean you actually give a shit about anyone other than yourself, right? I see your point.

There seemed to be some Hell's Angels thing in town this weekend, the city was crawling with "straight thug crew" & "support your local..." stickers and all night either Fri or Sat there were bikes heading over the Bay Bridge relatively late- this usually mans an event at the Oakland clubhouse. Everybody has to have some fun, right?
Nice picture of CK and please post pictures of Loon's new board, I am on the wait list for an RFS
test and am curious to see the boards it is going on.
The hurricane waves looked nice, but I did notice the Florida guys looked a little unused to dropping in to bigger waves. Must be hard to get such surf so infrequently.
Posted by: goodmorning at September 13, 2004 03:52 PMCongrats, loon!
I thought Kaiser was considering a Hobie egg a while back? I saw a short, thick, shiny retro-blue eggy thing on Labor Day at OB; on a day of 4' surf it was really zipping around like nothing else---I wanted to be on that board. It might have been a hobie or another maker's single-fin retro egg/pill deal. I was too stupid to find out, but I want one, whatever it is.
Putting some threads together, I wonder if an RFS would work well on something like that.

Posted by: elias at September 13, 2004 04:15 PMEric, I find the opposite most of the time, though I try to never leave wonderful OB. But seriously, does anyone know why OB is white capped to the horizon and once you begin your descent into Pacifica it's blue and way calmer?
Posted by: hee hee at September 13, 2004 04:16 PMkloo - drop me an email if you want to get the demo (someone just got it, and one other person is waiting for the next crack at it). You'd get it for 4-5 sessions, which is about what it takes to TRULY get a feel for it. Then, the demo moves on to the next victim. No cost, no obligation.
Posted by: blakestah at September 13, 2004 04:17 PMRetro Egger - I own one of them bad mo'fos and the board is super sweet. Catches waves real easy and is definitely worth owning. I wanted something that could replace me riding my normal shortboard or small wave board on those described "longboard" days. Well, this can handle those days and is super fun in the small stuff. Also, it can handle size as well. I got the 2+1 set up with the FCS side fins. Highly recommend the versatility of this. I have yet to take the side fins out actually as I have moved the fin around a touch.
Aqua has a few on the shelf right now and I think the Log Shop has a few. For the price, you might consider taking mine (for a nominal fee of course....) to either Ward Coffey or Elias or the like and getting one shaped for ya off the template of it. The shelf price is a bit large. But, its nice to have a Terry Martin shaped stick for the long haul.
Posted by: Kaiser at September 13, 2004 04:18 PMElias, you gotta wait for my que..... You were a bit quick on that pic post.
Nice freakin board though. When we gonna get some resin tint in there? I missed my run to Home Depot this weekend. However, it is a mere 10 minutes from where I sit right now.
Posted by: Kaiser at September 13, 2004 04:24 PMguess from the uninformed:
the cold water in the bay drops the air temps over the bay a few degrees which in turn creates lower air pressure. the low pressure sucks in the wind from the ocean hence the onshores.

Posted by: $ir poop at September 13, 2004 04:31 PMthe wind comes from air moving from high pressure to low pressure. pacifica, or "pathetica", is sheltered from most NW winds due to the surrounding hills. too bad it doesnt break too well, has no sandbars, is crowded with people who cant surf, and has polluted water.
They should definitely set up an artificial reef out there, I'd say!! tow an old cargo container out about 50 yrds and sink it. a house for the fish and a peak for me.
WERE THERE ANY WAVES IN SC YESTERDAY??? i'll bet that was "the call"

Posted by: bagel at September 13, 2004 04:40 PMsorry hee hee couldn't resist. people who sail boats on the coast think the mountains behind montara cause the onshore airflow to lift off the surface a mile or two offshore. its called the montara hole, if you get stuck in it heading down the coast you get to watch the competition go by on the outside. i don't know a lot about weather, but i've observed the hole and heard that explanation.
Posted by: eric at September 13, 2004 04:51 PMThanks a lot, blakestah---I will definitely take you up on that, and I look forward to it! No hurry, though; as you know I'm still struggling with the basics on the regular thruster set-up, so a month or two down the road might give me a better shot at noticing the key difference (apart from the key benefit of a 2/3 decrease in skegging bruises).

swam the rough water swim in LJ yesterday - props to 70 yr old mama B who took 2nd place in her age division. go mom!

the DMB was OK, DJ Z trip ruled the show, there were some good looking ladies and that new low cut jean thang made it a crack fest, 911 peace party was fun. But all in all nothing like the Free Tibet party that went down in the early 90's with Sonic Youth, Beasties, Smashing Pumpkins and the likes... Back when you had to look for someone to surf with at OB. I think I'm turning into an old fart fast...

Amateur meterologists just need to find the cause and effect. Dig around the internet for "mesoscale meteorolgy" and you'll find out about local winds and whatnot. S'all about picking the proper sized control volume for your thermodynamic analysis. (Thesis submittal due this week...everything I look at is surrounded by control volumes.)
Picture of the dead seal and the recent whale stories remind me of the time I surfed Sloat when I had first got my board on the crappiest, white-capped day. There was a no discernable line-up, and dead seal line without head or tail bobbed around. Probably within the first 10 times I had ever been surfing and I was so incredibly stoked to be out, I couldn't believe no one else was out that day. Good times.
Posted by: Andrew on 44th at September 13, 2004 08:40 PMtomstah- You are absolutelyfrigginright. The guy is Rym Partridge, a SC legend who surfs big waves and has made a few famous rescues on the side. He also has two twin daughters who surf better every day. Niceness around: Rym and Hailey.

Bad ass race! Health net olympic guy had a 3 minute lead the last 3/4 of the race. On the last lap the Peloton handed his ass to him and the Canadian Webcor dude passed him on Taylor st.
I briefly met with Chechu, Hincapie, Magnus Backstrandt, ex. Pacifica local and Olympian Jonus Carney.
Great sport with great vibes and cool pros who are glad to meet with the fans.
