A quick note to you retro eggers. I have found they work best in flat mushy waves. As the board rides very flat and you've got a wide ass nose. The steeper the wave the less nose I want dragging through turns or slowing my entry down the face. my current eggs are traditional thrusters. after growing up on single fins, including single fin eggs, thrusters are a marked improvement in speed and manuverablity, espicailly in mushy or flat waves. The 2+1 set-up works, but many people ride way more fin then they need, espicially on a smallish board. IMHO an egg is a great mushy wave tool but would stick with a tri fin or 2+1 for the aforementioned preformance charecteristics.

On September 9, 2004 Benjamin Wheeler was 40 yards from shore, in 10 feet of water at the South end of Ocean Beach, riding a 10-foot baby blue long board. It was about mid-day and he had been in the water 2 hours. The sky was clear and there was a light wind chop on the sea surface. He had observed several dolphins prior to the encounter. Wheeler recounted: "I was paddling pretty erratically, back and forth, from the surf line to the beach trying to get as many waves as possible before the wind blew it out. There was another guy out on a hybrid, but not paddling for waves very hard. A fin popped out of the water about 20 ft in front of us and then went back underwater. We got out and talked it over. We both agreed it was not a dolphin fin and we were done for the day. We alerted a few others in the area, but they did not seem to care." Wheeler said the fin was approximately 2.5 ft high and looked like a shark fin. White sharks are known to frequent the area at and around Ocean Beach. Caution should be exercised when utilizing this area for your ocean water activities.

Surfed, err.. drifted for 3 hours solid from noon to 3. One of the funnest sessions ever. Did the drift from Rivera to Sloat, and that was after an hour of fighting the current staying in one spot. It got junk when the tide dropped, imo.

3.5 hrs to sand dollar if traffic is mellow, bad traffic at moss landing or on 101 / 156 (if you go that way) could easily extend it past 4.

from sf -- ~four hours if there's nothing going on around carmel and you don't get stuck behind an rv in the sur.
