beautiful day. waves a plenty
Not much time for a report but the waves are out there this morning. A bit sloppy, a bit junky but also interesting and rich in character. Good surfers will find heaps o’ sections. Beginners might cringe at the frequency of duckdives. I watched a few smooth barrels crack and peel. As usual OB suffered from some gurgling, swirling inside current/rip/weirdness that often funked up otherwise good-looking peaks. It’s sunny and pleasant at the beach with a faint SW breeze. It's cool to think that Occy might have been riding a wave at Trestles generated from the same pulse of wind as a wave i rode this morning at OB.
I surfed the RFS again and liked it more this time than last.
California Coastal Cleanup Day tomorrow.
Sprout playing tonight and tomorrow night in the mission.
beach report... surf is EPIC. no rips, peaky groundswell, water is warming up and sheet glass surface.
YEAH RIGHT!
Posted by: elias at September 17, 2004 10:51 AManyone know the name or contact info for a glass shop in the area?
Posted by: at September 17, 2004 10:52 AMchecked it but couldn't surf. girlfriend had to use the car. it looked pretty fun. e, did you go out? dropped off kaiser roll's board to him at vfws. kaiser?

3 excellent shops:
Posted by: at September 17, 2004 10:56 AMStrive
Stretch
Haut
fyi... haut doesn't glass boards anymore for small contract jobs.
Posted by: elias at September 17, 2004 10:58 AMseems still Haut might be... spoke with them a few weeks ago and they said sure, no problem, for one board
Posted by: at September 17, 2004 11:01 AMfog already rolling in. wind on it. stay home, yo. pack the bong and throw back some brews.
Posted by: OB_Loke at September 17, 2004 11:03 AMThere are a bunch of glassers/ shapers that work out by the junkyard near the trailer park in Pacifica.
Did the Dp this morning... It wasn't all that its cracked up to be, but it beats work.

off to san diego at 3pm
keep on trunking..
Posted by: bagel at September 17, 2004 11:09 AMStrive does great work: they glass for Coffey, Mandala, and Haut's glasser when he's away, et al.

Posted by: ldogg at September 17, 2004 11:13 AMAre we talking about the same Kelly Slater here? He rips, but, uh, he cant talk too good.
Posted by: Goyo at September 17, 2004 11:14 AMHe's pretty dumb, but jeez can he smack the lip or WHAT?
what do they call it when a drummer has been holding a rhythm for a long stretch and then moves to a couple of harder hits on the snare and then blows apart the crash symbol and then immediatly drops back in to step to that original rhythm?
I like when they do that?
Is that a "break"....
Posted by: at September 17, 2004 11:19 AMI did a drive by this morning, looked like the juice factor was down a lot, but definitely rideable, and definitely peaky.
Strive does Coffey's high end work (tints, pinlines, gloss coats, etc), Stretch does the "clear and sanded" work.
The Pacifica trailer park - what a place to glass!!!
It takes about 4-5 sessions to get really familiar with the way the RFS works.
Posted by: blakestah at September 17, 2004 11:20 AMBack from mid-morning session somewhere around unspecifica. Grabbed a few not-so-big but serviceable waves. The ratio of time spent surfing to paddling was WAY higher than the last few days at OB, so I could actually work on my surfing, and, e.g., try out moves almost but not quite entirely unlike cutbacks. Not too crowded, neither. FUN!

SUCKED BVB balls
They all jumped the shark by now, all playing up to the camera, trying to be funny, complaining about things, etc. They showed maybe 2 real local cent. amer. surfers surfing. Showed absolutely no culture except them drinking. Fvckin' lame.
On the other hand, a 15 minute local movie of BIG redondo breakwall was swwweeeeet.
have a niceness weekend
Posted by: Hb at September 17, 2004 11:33 AMgoyo.. not sure why you think Kelly isn't intelligent. From what i've seen and heard of/from him.. the guy is well-spoken and knowledgeable. He reads, he's logical, he's curious. I'd say he ranks in the top 10% of pro surfers in terms of intelligence.
Posted by: e at September 17, 2004 11:33 AMAnyone know when the Slater/Reynolds heat is going to be?
Posted by: Curious at September 17, 2004 11:38 AMWow, EPIC surf each night this week and I missed it. Where have I been? Maybe I went to the wrong surf spot, otherwise, I doubt it. But, there is only ONE possibility given the 7-10 secs. energy out there.
As for today:
1st stop: nothing.
2nd stop: almost broke my neck yesterday, very small today.
3rd stop: mushy and not great. Inbetween 2nd stop and 3rd stop, best I saw.
4th stop: Back to 2nd Stop
5th stop: much further south then stop 1, 2, 3 or 4. Sucked even worse then stop 2-4.
6th stop: Utility, caught 2 waves in 7 minutes. Session lasted 16 minutes round trip.
7th stop: Chocolate donut was off the schnizzle. Coffee solid too.
Regarding Stop 6, water extremely colder, 3/2 is not longer suitable. Ice cream headache in full effect.
Lerm, I have your leash still on my board.
For those that slept in, you only missed a good donut run...........
Posted by: Kaiser at September 17, 2004 11:43 AMMr. E, we disagree.
I've never met slater but I have heard his commentary in vids like "110/240", "september sessions", "shelter", etc. i was embarassed for him, to be honest. sounds as smart as rocks.
My view is that if you are looking for a "smart" pro surfer, look to Barton Lynch, Dave Parmenter, Luke Egan, Margo - all old guys it seems, did their travelling before ipods and powerbook-G4's.
Posted by: Goyo at September 17, 2004 11:47 AMSo, does he have the ideal life?
"I do have the ideal life," Slater says. "I have maybe 30 good surfboards, a Mercedes M Class, some guitars, some golf clubs. I almost have enough money put away, a couple million bucks, where I can live off the interest, fly anywhere I want, maybe get a house in Hawaii, keep my condos in Florida and Australia, be in the water, be warm all the time. "What else do I need?"
Posted by: i'm broke and anonymous but smarter than slater at September 17, 2004 11:50 AMwouldnt call it EPIC besides maybe 3 nights ago..which may be pushing it as well..
slater was comentating the contest earlier and had some pretty snappy comebacks from hecklers..i would say hes a pretty smart kid to be where hes at..
yes whens the slater heat?
Posted by: bagel at September 17, 2004 11:53 AMslater heat is coming up in a few minutes...
Posted by: jdz at September 17, 2004 11:56 AMwhy does that quote make him dumb? Sounds like he's got it down. except for providing more than just $ for his kid.
"a little almond shaped barrel appeared" genius!
Posted by: Hb at September 17, 2004 11:57 AMyou can't knock the champ. heard him pimping the book on kfog driving down the coast last summer. he was open, and told a hillarious personal story about some crank calls he'd been getting from pamela anderson's other boyfriends. not a rocket scientist, but eloquent and interesting. shit he's even had a page in the ny times sunday magazine.
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at September 17, 2004 11:58 AMI checked out Slater at an event in Oaktown last year. 50-60 peeps in a room for the release of his book.
His book is written in 9th grade English but the guy is a heady cat. He has a high school education (from a book standpoint) but is much more educated in other facets of like that many of us will never understand. Dealing with fame? Being in the spotlight all the time? Having throngs (no, the THONGS are later) of Japanese folks all up in his grill at contests?
Point being, he is not the most "book smart" guy out there. But, he has got a solid head on his shoulders. Irons is much worse then that guy, that is for sure. Egan seems to be a pretty astute dude.
I would venture to guess 70% or more of these guys haven't spent a lot of time in a classroom during their lives.
Posted by: Kaiser at September 17, 2004 12:00 PManother good slater quote was "people can tell from the way i surf that i'm not a republican, george bush voter...can't they?" (to pottz)

hey, slater isnt an idiot, but lets just say he wouldnt get to far on Jeopardy. not a good speaker, in my book. i am a fan of his surfing though.
Dont get me started on the IQ of the Irons Bros, or any hawaiian pro for that matter that I can think of. -not being 'racist' here, but i have never heard a hawaiian pro speak very intelligently. name one!

In defense of Slater, he is from Florida. The intelligence scale is different there. Then again, where does smart get you in life? Stephen Hawking probably doesn't even surf.
Regarding several stop surfing, does one drive in their wetsuit?
Posted by: Andrew on 44th at September 17, 2004 12:11 PMi stand by my "Slates is smart" opinion. in fact.. probably the most intelligent guy on tour next to maybe Kieren. Luke Egan doesn't strike me as particularly bright. Most of his utterances seem rote and unoriginal. I like his surfing though, and he seems super friendly. Tom Carroll seems rather intelligent too.

Re: Slater - he never struck me as stupid. In fact, from the interviews I've read and seen in surf films and contest coverage, he seems smart enough to be genuinely DELIGHTED with the position he's in. The guy is having FUN and smart enough to appreciate it. That's a lot of pro atheletes, and other celebrities, who aren't.
Stretch is super quick, he glassed my board in four days, UV resin, surfed it the day I got it.
The boyz in Pacifica took almost two months.
Both did good jobs.
Stretch is an artist an innovator. He designs all kinds of shit, like boats, windsurfers and he designs tow boards for all the heavies, 1 inch thich 5 feet long, loaded with lead and carbon fibor to keep them strong and heavy. He is also paralyzed on the left side of his body from an old wind surf accident at Waddel Creak. He can't surf.
Notice when the surf goes to shit there are more posts here.

he prolly was changing on my bro's dad's boat. we pulled that trick for awhile. until scpd and harbormaster busted us on the boat. they confiscated my board (a stretch) and 6 weeks later in court with some others including kevin reed i was fined about $220. only then could i get my board back from the harbormaster.

Posted by: tomstah at September 17, 2004 04:02 PMGoyo-
You took the bait. Best not judge others lest....
It is one thing to determine that someone's behavior is not to your liking or standards but to judge individuals' intelligence, courage, or other such multifaceted facilities without qualifying such factors as environment, limited interaction with your subject group, metrics, etc. is difficult work. Most of us are smart people who have on occasion done dumb things. Some of us are smart people who often do dumb things. Those of us who are really and truly unintelligent (or disabled, or disenfranchised or...) and less fit for survival in this combative and competitive world ought be looked after by the greater group as a whole. This is one conception of the basic definition of a civil society. Seems hard for us to realize though.
And I beg to differ regarding the state of Hawaii's school system. I grew up the son of teachers and was surrounded by teachers in both the public and private school system. Hawaii is possessed of a public school system that has a myriad of problems, like many here on the mainland. It is possible to receive a good education in Hawaii's public schools- like anywhere many things factor into achieving this; family support, state support, local custom and attidudes regarding education, the list is endless. Hawaii, like other states, will see great gains in educational ranking when education is shown the consideration it is due in Federal and State fiscal policy. And when education is relieved of the bondage that is imposed upon it by the demand to conform to standardized testing that takes little consideration of regional realities.
(Look into the decline of hard science graduates in California since 1980 and compare it to the funds allocated California's education system during the same period. Ours here was once the strongest system in the nation.)
Hawaii is also possessed of at least two private schools that consistantly graduate as many (and occaisionally more) National Merit Scholars per capita as comparable mainland schools. Those parents who see this sort of achievement as important in their child's future often find ways to either send their kids to these schools or help their kids achieve comparble results in the public system.
Opportunities are never wholly equitable and it seems that our nation is seeing this gap widen day by day. This is an important election on the hoizon- make sure that you are registered and vote, help out where you can, and go surfing....
What a diatribe!

*Goyo*
Posted by: Goyo at September 17, 2004 06:09 PMI mentioned schooling. Hawaii's primary economy is service-based, tourism. There's very little incentive to educate its children, mostly offspring of immigrants. Educated people prefer not to fold towels and put the little soap-thingys in hotel bathrooms. Most people who send their children to private schools in Hawaii are either second or third generation immigrants (established) or outsiders that have come to fill positions of Luna (taskmasters or managers). This situation could be applicable to the greater of America as well, who knows?
This has nothing to do with intelligence, Hawaii's surfers are just as intelligent as any other region'(some idiotic, some mind connected). Hey you know we are all human beings with similar potentials, given similar environment. The pressure to be eloquent publicly may not be as high here, because da kine brah you know da one eh? ahh, cmon...Locals know exactly what he just said, so why say it any differently? Until the big time cameras roll, its good enough.
