Calm and placid.. a few peaks.
Hey everyone. Hopefully bay-area computer-bound surfers got some serious work done yesterday with this site in hibernation. I woke up with a nasty sore-throat, then slept till 11am. Then surfed for a bit.. then slept from 2-6pm, then surfed from 6:30-8, then slept from 9:15 until this morning. Soo.. a recovery day with mellow surf sessions as the medication of choice. As the sun set last night the waves turned on and offered up extremely enjoyable, zippy, nuggy lil’ nugs. Waves peaked up on various shallow sandbars, wedging and peeling and looking really nice. A few peaks did their best “mini-Indo” impressions as they barreled and peeled, all glassy and perfect… but small. I actually locked into one of these beauties and enjoyed a split-second “narrel.” I paddled a few strokes and then slide-slipped down the face and just tucked up into a small, tight package, trying to stay back in the pocket. The smooth, conical, reflective wave wrapped around my right side and I felt momentarily embraced by that enigmatic force of oceanic energy. I also managed an extremely kookified “air.” I had a lot of speed coming out of this one section and the wave ahead of me presented a rampy-looking wall.. I did a few preparatory pumps and then tried to “air” off the wall.. Jeez.. It must have looked really ugly.. I think I did manage to get my board into the air but my whole body was all flailed out and I ended up just shooting my board away from me and wiping it. Ha! It’s farking tough to pull an air and land the bieatch. At least for me.
Then last night I had my second ever dream where I was actually surfing. For some reason I think I was traveling somewhere in the Straits of Juan De Fuca. Conditions were glassy and peaky, with A-frames all over the place, mostly resulting in sweet, long lefts. I remember taking off on this wave and the surface was all smooth and green.. I had really good balance and positioning on my backhand and fired off a series of bottom-turn/snap combos. I remember really torquing off the top and tossing tons of spray. There were huge splotches of weird yellow foam in the water too. Hmmmm..
it sounds like certain San Mateo county spots are still feeling the affection of this south swell. OB was fun but really small yesterday, so maybe a trip south will serve your wave-jonesing needs? just watch out for murderous knife-weilding dads and the ever-daunting presence of the tooth.
the tooth is out there.

There was probably some south yesterday afternoon at Aratnom, though the (sweet) left sets were too infrequent for an impatient kook to wait for, so I settled for the more frequent mini-sets of 3-footers that offered quick-breaking, touchy drops and the occasional ride. Is it sharkier there than OB? Definitely interesting to start the session walking past a headless elephant seal (I think)...
The repaired shortboard that I mangled on Rocks seemed to work okay, though I am a poor judge. Any functional reason to gloss the bottom and rail repairs? I've taken them to 600 grit but the board came glossy...
I've ridden exactly one longboard, one funshape, and one shortboard (all with thrusters), so I have no way to know what in the performance of them is a generic feature of the type of board and what's specific to these particular boards. If you see me out there and would be willing to try out my board, I'd be very interested in your observations (not to worry, I wouldn't try yours, but would babysit it on the beach or outside the break).
Hoping to get out there mid-afternoon (if the damned Dell repair guy ever gets here)... Sorry for the boring post---have a fun weekend all!

If you are an outer bar/bigger winter wave junkie, there is no better place to be and surf Thanksgiving than right here.
Although there is a wide world of surf out there, I frequently find that there are still many things I've not yet discovered about Ocean Beach, and turn my attention to them.

Posted by: j at September 24, 2004 03:01 PMDamn! Some fun out there still.... Just got out and it is still workin. Spread out though as it is crowded. Better yet, don't go, its too crowded as is.
On the surf trip vs. staying home bit, honestly, pretend I didn't ask. I can't believe ANYONE would turn down taking a trip to experience the world and seeing/surfing/living something else vs. staying at home. No offense B-Stah, but I am a bit more adventerous then to stay home and hope that it is awesome over Thanksgiving because it has been that way in the past. Besides, if the swell is big here, it will be big elsewhere also.
So, let's rephrase the question: In November/December, if you HAD to take a trip somewhere, where would you go? Ideas are welcome.
Mexi, when you leaving? That is really sweet you are getting paid to hit it up! I live your gig, you are doing it right.

You will find good conditions then at NW facing breaks at similar latitudes. Morrocco, Spain, France, Hawaii. But man, my whole surfing life and I can't remember having more fun than Thanksgiving week 2002 right here. And, to add to that, I got to go through it with all my bestest surfing friends, all of whom also live here.
If you need to hit the road to find adventure, hit the road. You will find adventure. I will find it at the end of my street.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at September 24, 2004 05:03 PMthanx paul b, sounds like a good time..i guess they dont allow open fires over there and their booked to boot..that guerrilla camping bit sounds fun though..
im not trying to be negative or anything but i mean really, how many comeback reunion tours can there be? havent they all passed thier prime..i saw sonny rollins at the masonic auditorium and it was cool and all but all i could think about is how i missed not seeing him in his hay day...
Posted by: bagel at September 24, 2004 05:34 PMnot that i was even born during his hay day..
Posted by: bagel at September 24, 2004 05:35 PMthe wind seems up now, but 1:30 to 4 was sweet. I found a spot that you had to paddle some to stay at, and I had it to myself all afternoon. Every 5 minutes, a couple of sweet, clean, playful chest-high waves, great for a kook shortboarder. I sucked, of course, but damn it was fun.
Posted by: Kloo at September 24, 2004 05:43 PMj- thanks for the Kalakala link, great story (yeah, I'm leaving for boat school tomorrow--good timing).
sharkbait- you're a steamboat historian??? sweeet!
I haven't posted much in a good while, very few surfs in months due to trying to cram work and prep in for moving to Port Hadlock (although when I have made it to the water it has been excellent to remember that the salt water therapy is no different regardless of my time away). It finally looks like I've just about got the money set to do nothing but study this next year. got two kayaks built and have been trying to learn to paddle decently as I think my kayak will be my main local transport up there--hopefully buying a Cal 20 to live on (???fingers crossed). potatoes and lentils and handlining for fishy protein. lots of water time. mmmm, stoked. think I'll pick up a 6-5-4 and take a shortboard just in case (anyone have any experience with 'Boz' wetties?). PH is a bit far from surf, but you never know.
e-I hope your strait of j de f dream is somehow precient for my upcoming year.
Anyhow, long post, sorry. Cheers folks, thanks for sharing some of your waves this last year, hope this winter is epic for each of yous!
