Solid mid-December Dawnie
Pleasurable, punchy head-high peaks. Prototypical grey, chilly foreboding weather. Plenty of action throughout Bay Area beaches. Lerm and I found our own peak but then ended up surfing with Lewis and a few of his ripper friends. One friend was exploding off the lip. Taking no mercy on the pitchy, high-performance walls. Saw him arc a beautiful, full-speed roundhouse cutback and then rebound off the whitewater and link two more heavy turns and then a rotating air attempt off the closeout at the end of the ride. Shreddding. Lots of opportunities for big moves and even some cover-ups if you’re of the barrel-hound ilk. SF buoy at 4.2 ft 14seconds and there are a lot of waves coming through. Outer buoys are jumping (California buoy at 17ft 15seconds) so get it now “for tomorrow we die.”
Killer rides this morning. Thank you Huey!!! Steep and deep.

Some broke crumbly, some clean, and I mostlly guessed wrong. A few little shoulder rides, and one big superman launch. One of those days that rewards kloofulness, I guess.

Hi everyone. My wife is in school even during the summer so it looks like January is our best vacation opportunity. I'm planning to go to Costa Rica. She doesn't surf and isn't interested in it (except for maybe one beginner lesson) so any suggestions for where to go where it would be easy to grab a morning or afternoon surf while spending midday together on a hike or something? I was thinking Tamarindo with maybe a day trip on a boat for me on one of the days. We've never been to CR but have some friends in San Jose. I'm looking at Alacran and Tico Travel to help with planning.
Anything I should stay away from? Good places to stay and hike? No secret spots needed, just a place with reliable decent surf nearby so I can get a quick session in here and there while not being gone for days on end.

Blakestah, picking up from yesterday, thanks for the footage. It gave me a good idea of what to expect. Looks like a worthy investment for the doubler. That was not me late Sat morning. I was shooting in your hood in the earlier am. Had a nice conversation with Sharkbait too.
Also appreciate the info about zoom and lighting. I've got a lot to learn. Maybe in a year or two if I progress, I'll step up to better equipment. First I need to convince myself that my ability warrants the investment. How much does a directors chair cost? ;)

I asked Kirk's "personal assistant" to take the photo cuz I knew no one would believe me when I told them Kirk Hamett cruised into the office. Also note Gally in photo (red hat) standing next to AR with his eyes closed. IMO, more exciting to meet Kirk Hamett than meeting Cory Lopez!

I know the guy who took this pic - he is an avid photographer with little training and $$$ in equipment. After about 2 years his stuff looks awesome, still totally hobbyist. Open the pic in a new window to see it full size, or go to crowmountain.net to see more of his stuff.
Its the same with video. I started shooting mainly b/c I didn't know of any quality footage of big OB (I probably didn't change that, but I did get some hack footage of big OB). With my current setup, and a good tripod with fluid head, it would be a whole nother ballgame. Just shoot late morning on good weekends, at the most crowded spots.

Haven't been there in awhile, but drive isn't too far from san jose, has decent beach break surf - can even get heavy, and generally feels remote there despite being kinda gringo-fied...wasn't too developed when i was there 5 yrs ago. Nice but cheap lodging avail up in the hills.
i don't think dominical is at all a secret, but e, delete this if that's the least-bit debatable.

In my dreams I could surf like those women up there. Session eerily similiar to Klooless', surfed not at all like those pics, the shock and horror! During some quality time inside, had no idea the outside was cleaning up because I realized when I'm stuck in the fray my brain insists the entire ocean is an exact replica of the garbled mess surrounding me. This is probably the saner, "save self" gray matter kicking in. Thought "awwww" when I went to shore and got a better look, then noticed a lone surfer take off deep on a 9 foot freight train. Hrm. Okay, watching from the beach suddenly feels much much better!

Mid Day Surf Report:
Winds still out of the E/NE but the water isn't as groomed as you would think it should be. Surfed Cypress Lefts with some other peeps. Waves were inconsistant and not great but still nice to be in the water. Sun was poking out between the haze and the fog (which looks to be building inland a bit). Totally doable out there and with the lower tide this afternoon it could get better. Shape was not great.
Slates looks like he killed it in his heat.....

go to the triplecrownofsurfing.com and right click (pc) or ctrl click (mac) the link that says "live video", save the .asx file to your desktop. this is a file calling the stream.
now go back to windows media player and manually file --> open on the .asx
sometimes the browser plug in can't get the stream going, especially when the site is overloaded so try that as a manual override.
