Rain, rain, rain...
Post Christmas blues this morning in more ways then one!
The rain is mucking things up out there in a big way. Not much traffic to contend with this morning but plenty of overflowing gutters, bad drivers and overall crappy conditions. Rain spattering my windshield as I cruised thru the city on my way to work. The bouys are up, SF Bouy reading 11.2 @ 15 sec right now and the winds are somewhat variable but the rain water will turn you into an alien for sure. Be careful if you head out in the next 24-72 hours. Watch out for little green (or brown) floaties.
Also bummed out that this weather system has crushed our good run of offshores. Christmas Day served me up one of my favorite sessions of the year. If anyone was out before 2:00 p.m., you know what I am talking about. I only wish I had arrived at the beach 30 minutes before I did. What a great day of surf! One to remember that is for sure. Now back to some sad news....
Probably the biggest bummer of today is the results of the earthquake/tsunami that occured in Southeast Asia/Indonesia over the weekend. Reports have the death toll between 12,000 and 20,000 right now but I am sure it is more like 50,000 to 75,000. That might be aggressive but if you have ever traveled to any of these places, you know the type of ramshackle places many of the inhabitants live in. Being dependent upon what the ocean provides them, most of these people live near the water line as a means of subsistance. Lack of unified building codes, lack of natural resources, lack of money; all contribute to the devastation.
Some pics I found of an actual tidal surge/tidal wave:
first post!!!
it's monday when:
-you grab your towel after showering and a large spider falls out your towel right on your face
-you drop a bottle of cologne THRU your sink (yes, there's a nice little hole in it now)
fyi to all, turn on your headlights when you're driving in the rain!

Posted by: PF at December 27, 2004 01:22 PMhttp://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html
Posted by: PF at December 27, 2004 01:24 PMI don't think the masses that suffered were centered at surf-centric areas. Sure, the Mentawai's had some issues, but Sumatra and Sri Lanka were hit the hardest.
Many of the low laying islands and shorelines were engulfed by the rising water level and tidal waves. As for relief aid, those are great ideas but off the top of my head, I don't know what relief funds would contribute directly to this cause. Maybe the Red Cross or the like.
If you are bored, you can do some research on the tsumani that hit Crescent City in 1964. My family was there at that time and has told me many stories about the force of the ocean. The cause was similar to this event, a earthquake was centered up in Kamchatcka (or thereabouts) and sent tidal waves towards the west coast of the US. Crescent City took the major force of the event.

thanks for the donation links. apparently, they have no warning mechanisms like we have here in the states. so, most people didn't know to get to higher ground.
saturday was fun! got out around 11:00am. not too crowded, but crowded enough. locked into some nice overhead waves. saw people getting barrelled left and right.

Man's body found in ocean
HE MAY HAVE PERISHED ATTEMPTING TO SURF IN TREACHEROUS SEAS
By Elise Ackerman
Mercury News
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is trying to identify a man who
apparently drowned while surfing Monday afternoon in the turbulent
waters off Montara State Beach.
Lt. Steve Shively said the body of a man in his mid-20s was spotted
offshore about 3 p.m. and recovered by firefighters from Half Moon Bay.
Shively said the man was wearing a wetsuit and appeared to have been
surfing, although no surf board was recovered.
If the man was surfing, he would have been the only surfer to brave
the 10- to 12-foot waves pounding the beach just south of an area of
the coast known as Devils Slide.
``It's really rough out there,'' said Paul Cole, battalion chief from
the Half Moon Bay Fire Department. ``You get into trouble really quick.''
Even experienced surfers sought out sheltered areas such as Cowell
Beach near the Santa Cruz boardwalk. ``It's too stormy to be
successful most places around Santa Cruz,'' said Ryan Thacher, 20,
referring to Monday's weather.
National Weather Service senior forecaster Mark Strobin said the waves
were caused by a winter storm that lashed the California coast and
were not related to the monster earthquake and devastating tsunami
that swept the Indian Ocean on Sunday morning.
Shively said that the surfer's death is being investigated as a
homicide but that authorities have not found any signs of foul play.
``It appears to be a drowning and it appears to be someone who was in
the surf, but we have to eliminate everything else as we go along,''
he said. ``It's better to be safe than sorry.''
Although surfing is considered a treacherous sport, surfers say most
deaths in the water are not related to big waves but to health issues,
like a seizure or a heart attack.
Another surfer died earlier this year after suffering a heart attack,
