Rain, onshores, waves for the stout and immune?
Hard onshores and throbbing, spitting storms have shut down surf opportunities for all but the massively adventurous. Maybe some protected spots will be holding if you’re willing to withstand the scum-laden fecal matter. Tasty!
Lerm has two empty weeks in the middle of the summer for a surf trip and he wants to know where to go. Somewhere tropical, warm, off-the-beaten-path, with solid waves. He was thinking maybe the south pacific or back down to central America. Every time I look at a map of the south pacific I get lost in rapturous ruminations about all the friggin islands that are rarely discussed and surely hold vacant, world-class churning reef-passes. Ya hear about Samoa and Fiji and Tahiti and Hawaii but you never hear about Nauru or Henderson Island or the Cook Islands. How about a 6 month trip on a 50-foot yacht all through the south pacific! Anchoring in palm-fringed lagoons, exploring remote reef passes. Charting swells and then using maps to make predictions of what reef pass or islands will produce waves. Finding a dream wave and just anchoring there for a week and trading barrels with your lady and a few bros. Eating fresh fish every day. Playing shuffleboard on deck. Going ashore and checking out different polynesian cultures. People are doing that right now. We’re here on the computer, pumping through code or excel-spreadsheeting and they’re out in the south pacific catching tuna and getting shacked.
Good on em.

what a storm last night. the ocean surface is ripped to shreds.
thanks for posting that e. i've been at my company for 5 years now and got bumped up to 5 weeks of vacation. so a few surf trips are in order to escape the norcal summer doldrums.

Posted by: j at January 11, 2005 10:42 AMLady, I’m your knight in shining armor and I love you
You have made me what I am and I am yours
My love, there’s so many ways I want to say I love you
Let me hold you in my arms forever more
You have gone and made me such a fool
I’m so lost in your love
And oh, we belong together
Won’t you believe in my song?
Lady, for so many years I thought I’d never find you
You have come into my life and made me whole
Forever let me wake to see you each and every morning
Let me hear you whisper softly in my ear
In my eyes I see no one else but you
There’s no other love like our love
And yes, oh yes, I’ll always want you near me
I’ve waited for you for so long
Lady, your love’s the only love I need
And beside me is where I want you to be
’cause, my love, there’s somethin’ I want you to know
You’re the love of my life, you’re my lady!
A request:
Could we abolish the use of "Lady" that comes and goes on this site. Everytime I read about someone surfing with their 'Lady', it just makes me ill.
I picture some gold-rope wearing hasbeen with his polyester shirt open to his navel and his arm around some coked-out pornstar with Kenny Rodgers singing in the background, "Lady...

Yeah, and some parts of Boogie Nights are fun (Heather Graham on Skates for example), but after a while you start to wish you hadn't started down that path (William H Macy's character for the other example).
It's like the response from the guy who gave me my first tab when I asked mid-trip what coming down was like -
"You just start to get tired of it."

hola all, how's the how's the great highway/north of the bridge/south of funston life treating you folks? hope it's been a fun winter so far. I'm pretty out of touch up in the northwest, lots of work, very little internet access, and a good bit farther from the pacific than I'd like to be--something that should be remedied within 6-10 months. E's atoll daydreaming is the stuff that keeps me going--I'm learning a fair amount about boats and boatbuilding and sails and rigging yada yada, but certainly far from setting up the backyard shop and having a 35' cat built in a year... getting closer though.
Posted by: ben at January 11, 2005 11:06 AMHaven't been able to get to the coast much as the school schedule here is fairly intensive, but I had a great surf Sunday with three good friends. It was a startlingly beautiful day, gorgeous grey silver and gold skies, a foot of snow on the beach, tall offshore rock stacks and snow softened islands encircling the bay, snow falling on us off and on in the water with a gentle offshore breeze, beautiful clear cold water that went from a silver/grey surface color to perfect crystaline jade green as I would duck dive a gentle roller. My friend Adam had his first ever go-out in these crazy conditions and actually stood and rode twice on a too-small shortboard. Erin looked beautiful and James had a great time and over the course of three hours I caught a bizzillion fun little waves with enough oomf to get numerous turns in before a gentle pull-out. I'm still energized from it :)
anyhow, good stuff. hope you bay area folks are all well.
cheers, Benjamin

Posted by: Kaiser at January 11, 2005 11:20 AMI have some experience doing the sailing thing. My wife and I have had our boat for 14 years. We have done all Central America, some South America and the Caribbean. Lots of anchoring and surfing. I have done some South Pacific. We also did a 6 month trip up the West coast of Vancouver Island on a surf trip. We/I lived aboard about 5 years of that time. I know a fair bit about the program. (seasons, boats, blah blah)
Posted by: web at January 11, 2005 11:23 AMIt is pretty tricky combining surfing and sailing. Mostly because alot of surf spots are not good places to anchor overnight. Usually the wife or girlfriend is not a big fan of watching you surf all day, while she cannot even set a cup on the table because the "anchorage" sucks. I took a bit of grief over that .
We will be going to South Pacific as soon as our daughter becomes a good swimmer, (she is only seven months) So I am very involved in planning that.
Anyone wanting to exchange ideas, questions, suggestions on this topic let me know. We can post or email direct.

Also, good shit on the art yesterday. lerm email me at iane@sfsu dot edu. I'll be gone over that time, it'd be cool to meet up somewhere. I'll be in Central/South America during the Summer hopefully.
Posted by: Ian at January 11, 2005 12:24 PMHey Web.. would love to hear more about your sail/surf adventures and what is involved in such a trip. I am planning a surf trip in Sept with a buddy... any thoughts on a fun exotic place to go with high potential for excellent waves?

sebastian inlet looks like a fun wave..not the really small ones..did you see the floater about 1/4 the way through oh man
Posted by: bagel at January 11, 2005 12:47 PMPhil... You might wanna go further south than PV in Mex. Much better southern exposure once you get arouond that bend.
E, have you all looked at Typepad instead of straight-up MT hosting? It seems like their Pro account could do the number for Niceness with a somewhat-reduced administration hassle.

Posted by: phizen at January 11, 2005 12:53 PMOh, more non-Niceness on the landslide in La Conchita. I guess they had a similar landside 10 years ago. Fark, I remember being in Santa Barbara when the late 80's/early 90's drought broke. Lower State Street was underwater in a big way. I think it rained 5" in an hour that day. But all was not bad, since it was another "get-out-of-work-free" day. I called my boss and told him everything was flooded, but that I was working... working at shooting some pool and downing some suds that is.

South Pacific unrest in Papaeete. No need for a Kelly and Pam Quiksliver style 50 ft. charter. Nothing like being miles away from anything and then seeing the f**king Quiksilver boat on the horizen - 'oh perfect' -. Otherwise plenty of loco transpo if yer knerwd whered to find it.
Posted by: Local 415 at January 11, 2005 01:33 PMLe Bus.
Plus it's not too too expensive - plenty of really hard to access waves; toughened women and rip off friends to meet. Thing is E you can't divulge the name of one single surf spot - not ever. Lerm or whatever he is should keep it all under wraps - like we don't want to know. Tuamotu islands - no surf, only pearls.
If you think the locals are heavy in Hawaii wait unitl you meet the real deal - you will want to cry. Recently a magistrate from England arrived to Spencer Christian's Pitcairn island. England has charged the elder males with statutory (sp.) rape. Some kind of heavy crackdown for odd deeds. Paradise comes with a heavy price tag...BEWARE
Kaiser, that's beer with kegs second from the right.
Posted by: dano at January 11, 2005 01:41 PMbagus, if you are talking a land based trip (airplane) I don't have any more insight than anyone else. September? Almost the end of Indian ocean season, good chance of a big swell in mexico from September hurricane, almost the end of rainy season in Central America.
Posted by: web at January 11, 2005 01:42 PMI think I would hit mainland Mex.Bang for the buck. Myself, I would go to Rio Nextpa. I would fly into Acapulco with a buddy, rent a car, and go hit Nextpa. Good waves, gets big but not suicidal, and the last time I was there, which was 6 years ago, it was not crowded at all, and the surf was really good. My personal opinion when flying somewhere is to head for a really consistent spot and plant myself, rather than chasing surf.

re: tahoe this weekend, keep in mind it's MLK weekend. not everyone has monday off, but i believe most of the schools do so expect full on holiday/weekend crowds. with any luck the snow on the roads will keep them in the ditch...i mean at home and it won't be bad. if you have vert plus still probably long lines though.

Posted by: goodmorning at January 11, 2005 02:13 PMThankfully I think it will be a long time before the Tua's get a crowd problem, 415. Unless you are a frog, you have to have your boat out of there before the onset of hurricane season, as in you REALLY have to leave. They (the frogs)hold back $, or take a credit card # when you check in at Marquesas. You get it back when you check out of French Poly on your way west or north. Plus, it is a bitch getting around. Whatever to GPS being the end all solution. The GPS is more accurate than the charts. So a 1/4 mile off really matters. (and those are French charts. many are still Cook survey. Up to 1 mile off) So you really cannot travel at night with any surety. Radar does not pick up coconut trees very well, and the atolls are just that, atolls. Which means they are low. So you have to navigate via visual and GPS. And it is a maze of reefs. So the visual only works at certain times of the day. Sun in your eyes? Can't see the bottom. That sort of thing. Also, if you are there on your own boat, you either KEEP GOING west, or bail up for Hawaii. Any further than the Societies (Tahiti et al) and you better have an upwind machine to get home. BTW- the Quicksilver rig draws about 6 feet. That eliminates it from alot of Tua options.
Posted by: web at January 11, 2005 02:16 PMYes, hitchhiking is an option, but that is for the young and familyless. The wife wants her own bathroom when rotting in the tropics for extended periods.Plus, you only have a couple options to start from. Most atolls are empty, or have part time pearl fisherman living there. Freshwater is a real issue.
Bottom line, to get there is a major effort, and not many pull it off. And from that list, not many do it twice.
As for the local pearl fisherman, practical gifts showing your appreciation (new baby bottles, quality diaper rash cream, whatever, things that really make a husbands life easier) and just asking permission and showing respect go a really long way.
thanks dave, et al. yeah mlk is a chafe BUT

Everyone dreams about sailing the world but a trip out the Gate is usually enough to dampen one's enthusiasm. Da' wife and I lived on a 35' 11-ton cutter rig for four years in SF Bay. It's not an easy life. I can't imagine making it to the South Pacific. We had friends who made the run from Cabo to SF and immediately sold their boat. Very different from surfing when you're at the helm with your wife/kids/friends on board. Before these guys sign up, want to tell them about maintaining a sailboat and how many hours you trained to get where you are now?
p.s. Tell us where to ship care packages. You're probably dying for a Big Mac and fries!
