Good day for the Radio-Controlled surfer… or for east-coast wankers like me who remember teeny Jersey summer days and love it. Cold. Nobody around. Offshores grooming. Lake waves. Boat wake.
Improvisation. What is it? How is it manifested? It gets articulated in many walks of life. Financial analysts study economic trends and improvise modeling schemas based on myriad factors. Teachers learn the traits of each of their students and improvise the most effective methods of instructing them. Programmers improvise elegant solutions to complex logical dilemmas. On the fly, as time unfolds. Actors, Surgeons, Mechanics, Farmers, Architects all utilize the spirit of improvisation in their work.
The spirit of improvisation particularly shines in art, music and athletics. Maybe nowhere more than in jazz music. Jazz musicians cultivate their chops, over time, by learning the fundamentals of music theory and the rudiments of their particular instrument. An untrained grom might be able to pick up a guitar and improvise a melody but it’s unlikely that that kid will have much flexibility and scope in the melodies he/she creates. Hours, days, weeks and years of studying scales, chords, modes, altered scales, altered tunings and the compositions of the masters will begin to develop a foundation of musical knowledge from which elevated improvised creations can occur. Beautiful musical improvisation, while on one hand relying on the spontaneous and unplanned, also relies on a foundation of practiced discipline and knowledge.
The best surfers improvise elegant, radical lines along uncompromising, dangerous waves. They make it look easy. They flow and style and express themselves in an spur-of-the-moment, unrehearsed, dance of athleticism and power. Their bodies and minds are only able to do this because of years and years of hard-won development. Practice.
Accomplished improvisational expression floats at the top of a deep foundation of cultured development. High-level improvisers spend lifetimes honing their respective tools. The creative outlays that follow represent some of the greatest artistic and athletic achievements of mankind. The pursuit of mastery. Unravelling the unkown. Exploring outer limits of personal stylistic ideals.
Bruce- I am familiar with the fantasia 35. I looked at a couple in 89 when I bought my boat. They were too expensive for me at the time. I did not have much dough at 26. I ended up with a 36 angleman knock off, built in Hong Kong at the American Marine yard. I have had it ever since, although I am now selling it. I am really considering going with a Roberts 44 corten steel round chine kit, and have it built in Seattle. Something Moitessier would be proud of, a high latitude boat. I need more room for kids, and I want something I can run onto a reef and pull it off in one piece. Also, watertight bulkheads, etc. A real South Pacific machine. Probably high aspect cutter rig. It is amazing how my perspective has changed from bare minimum to now wanting deep freeze, long hot showers, etc. Shit, my wife and I showered on deck with a bug sprayer for years. She has stated "no more of that!!" Of course, it helps when it is 90 dgs and your shoulders ache from paddleing...
Posted by: web at January 14, 2005 10:43 AM1.3 at 4 secs down here. woooooooooo!
improvisation is amazing. everyone has it but not many people use it. we are all guilty of not using it sometimes. i see it most when my mind turns off when playing the guitar and beautiful, to me, music and tunes come out and then you snap back into it and don't know what the f your hands were just doing. it's like your mind and body are just going on without you and it they can be more complex and in tune than you can ever be. um, yeah.
i hate seeing my wetsuit dry. my board is all dried up and weeping. my new booties i bought for some pointbreaks have not see the ocean yet. i am rotting. give some sweet, sweet saltwater soon.

Anyone catch anything today?
Posted by: Kaiser at January 14, 2005 10:49 AMOn the wetsuit/tsunami discussion yesterday. I didn't see the original Craigs List post referenced but I do know that when there was good sized Tsunamit that hit G Land about ten years ago that the warm water in the area dropped a good ten + degrees right after the Tsunami. Up to six months later there were periods where it was not trunkable you needed a minimum of a springsuit. My buddies were there and only two of them had springsuits...they scored perfect in season G Land with hardly anyone else out due to the exceptionally cold water.
I don't know all the oceanography associated with a Tsunami but I do think it could bring significant upwelling to an area since they do originate at the bottom of the ocean.

Boo Hoo. Is this Nicenessjoint not on the World-Wide Web and open to all? Perhaps E should make it an exclusive 'Gold Club Member' only deal. That way you would not have to listen to any descending dissenting rabble from the various OTHER voices outside of your little nicenees peepsworld. WORD.
Posted by: Cirlce Jerk at January 14, 2005 12:17 PMYou broadcast the conditions daily, you worship idolize and encourage the Rapestah and further, you link everything under the chilly sun that is remotely related to surfing. Isn't it enough? Go static already; post a report and fuck the blog.
Each day one or another local (please, lets' not dither about " what a local is." You know already...)
asks me, ' ***- ...what is this Niceness? - who are those people- those guys?"
I have no other reply except to say that they need to visit the site and write in if they have a reactiona to it at all. Generally they fear the poisoned pen of your devoted followers.

For almost three decades. Transplant. Fuck you. Yeah, I come here because I like the niceness, but I can be a prick. And have. And will again when people like you decide to fuck with me. And I am not afraid to post my name. Get real, you are acting like Ocean Beach is a secret spot. Hey, when its REALLY big, arn't you the only one with the balls to surf it anyway? Dont worry, next wed. Mavs will be big enough for you. I am sure you will be steep and deep. Lose the baggage, you will walk a lot lighter.

Just saw your comment from yesterday. Strange, there were not that many Fantasias produced. Great liveaboard, mostly a slug under sail. I sold mine about 15 years ago to a guy with a young son who renamed it Carpe Diem (along with 20% of all recreational sailboats). If you're in your 20's it could be the same damn boat. Would that be weird or what? Gawd I'm getting old.
Posted by: Bruce at January 14, 2005 12:44 PMOne of the 10 confirmed killed by the landslide was Charly Womack, 57, a noted local surfer, artist, and father of four. According to Bonzer co-creator and renowned shaper Duncan Campbell, Charly was not only a close friend but a member of the Bonzer family and one who helped influence local surfing and design. When asked for comment, the Campbell family offered this statement:
“He was one of the first surfers on the planet to ride a Bonzer. He was there in the garage in 1970 when Malcolm and I started the very first 3fin. He was there in 1975 to introduce me to Jacqie, my wife of 28 years. He was there in 1983 when we put the first 5fins on a Bonzer. It was his board. Charly was there at Cafe Haleiwa on the North Shore when we needed to remodel after the hurricanes in 1982 and 1991. He was there to pull me off a 100-ft. rock face in Ojai, CA, when my footing gave way. The fact is, Charly was there for everyone and anybody who needed help or inspiration. He was a truly selfless individual.
To say he was a great person would be a huge understatement. As Native American Indians would say, he was a ‘human being.’ In fact, he was in his Teepee when they found him.

Posted by: j at January 14, 2005 01:38 PMYo, I am gonna take the bait as well and then make a call out of sorts:
Circle Jerk, what in fact did E actually do that got your panties in a bunch? He posted a freakin email he received! Pause for a second and think about that one. He made no comment about it, no reaction other then merely posting the contents of the email and sharing it with those that check this here site. Sooooooo, my fellow wave hog, he in fact did exactly what you are asking him TO DO, make it known on the world wide farqing web.
Now for the call out:
A response such as yours could be deciphered as a "guilty" one. I am not claiming that you, Bruce, Lerm, or or the like sent him that email but you sure have a strange reaction to someone posting some content without making a comment either way towards said comment.

Ahh, the poisoned pen....my opinion, e, is that people who have a problem with my site can talk to me in person, or email me. Anonymous email gets quite a bit less respect, and Bad Vibe forging emails and posting here gets no respect at all, in one ear, out the other. Let people be judged based on their actions in keeping OB "soulful".
Circle Jerk (aka Bob), what have you done for OB lately other than bitch and whine about me and e? And, do you think there is even the slightest chance you are making a difference?

Posted by: web at January 14, 2005 04:00 PMBut if I WAS there, I could only access internet through very expensive means. ie private high frequency services. I get weather when I am sailing the same way most do, via SSB download from noah, or whoever. (australia has simillar service, so do the french, in french, of course) you download onto a laptop via a modem connecting to SSB or ham . You get the usual smorgasboard of wave height, wind direction, isobars, actual sat photo, etc. The service is free after you spend about 3K for gear plus the laptop. It works out fairly well. But I dont know, maybe in the future I won't use it. Since when I am there I am a transplant, and it is info via the computer being broadcast worldwide, maybe it destroys the essence of the surf experience. Maybe I should only use a barometer, and watch the clouds and read the swell. I guess I need to start EARNING my waves, rather than cheating, and lowering the soul factor.
WELCOME TO MARIN COUNTY!!

Posted by: j at January 14, 2005 07:13 PMWhat is it about this blog that attracts comments? Real surfing blogs generate like zero comments, it must be the incendiary nature of claiming the surf zone as something to be exploited and used for ego feeding by e-xceptional individual and attracting interest to the normally low key setting of OB.
