onshores.. rain... but...

Drove around for a while. Heard about Iraq elections and gnarly So-Cal train wreck. Switched to Sublime and Miles Davis. Sat and watched a potential surf situation. Nobody around. Nobody out. A little wave that farted up a section or two every few minutes... or so it seemed. Suited-up on my knees on the side of my car protected from the wind. Ran down to water's edge then paddled out. Brackish runoff flowing right into the lineup. Got into an immediate groove and caught a bunch of enjoyable, funky, multi-section rides. Cool drops. Lots of paddling. Eventually a random, low-key guy joined me. Just the two of us. He caught a few largish ones and i hooted 'em. Someone mentioned yesterday the pleasure of the moment when you *know* you've caught a wave. A few today like that. The pleasure of anticipation. Scooting under the ledge, then a split second where you knew you've caught the wave but it's too early to stand.. You're in there.. then a last-second ledge-drop as the bottom sucks out followed by meandering down-the-line. Some slow cutbacks but no resounding lip-smacks today. One super-kook move where my hand slipped on the take-off and i belly-rode the whole ride. Not the worst way to spend 15 seconds but i was bummed to barf the ride. Toward the end of the session the wind turned absolutely onshore and the hail showered down!! Hail-session! First one for me. It was awesome to change out of the wetty in the wind, rain and hail. Biblical style.

hope y'all got some.

And....Blah!

Made my appt with doof at the way at 7, then drove to the top of the hill. Then drove back home.

Damn front moved in too fast.

Finally fixed the porch light instead of trying my luck in the washing machine today.

mexi and whoever shoots film, what do you think about this slide scanner... i don't know shit about this stuff but this looks kinda good for the price:

Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV, 3200dpi, 35mm, $265
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=310893&is=REG

bruce... check your email... and happy b-day!

Posted by: bbr at January 28, 2005 11:28 AM

Scanner looks sweet, good deal for true slide scanning IMHO. I usually get my stuff scanned when I get it developed at NewLab, kinda spendy but my format isn't supported by many consumer scanners anyway. I will be forever stuck in cellulose.

Posted by: kookdom at January 28, 2005 11:41 AM

I use that scanner, it sucks but its all I can afford. I want a Nikon... I'll be selling mine soon..

Posted by: bbr at January 28, 2005 11:44 AM

bbr- Will do right after work. And thanks.

Posted by: Bruce at January 28, 2005 11:45 AM

I actually use the Dimage III

New photos on my site. I've given up trying to post em here, DUH?

Posted by: Mexi at January 28, 2005 11:53 AM

E, those arials are sweet, I've been trying to figure out where they all are, I think I've nailed most of em..

Posted by: mexi at January 28, 2005 11:58 AM

Happy Bday Bruce!

Re: yesterday's good vs/bad about surf, I am definitely switching the following from e's "shitty things about surfing" : 8 trillion duckdives, surfing poorly, closeouts, onshores, and getting pounded - onto my personal "good things about surfing" list. Otherwise I would go insane!

OB looks excellent...for extreme survival training.

Dang, that sounds like a fun session. Good on you for getting out there, E!

A little BVB update:

In Europe, BVB is a bigger legend than anyone could comprehend. In Dutch,
"Brand vijver buurt" is a play on words and his initials that translates literally
as "Do my laundry." Last year, a gated housing development just outside
Amsterdam named their man-made lake after him.

In homage to BVB's prowess in regulating Noriega St., the SF Dept. of Transit
is restoring a train car bearing his name. Starting this summer, it will serve the
Outer Sunset district with a terminus at Judah St.

Not one to be left out of the festivities, The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
is mounting an exhibition planned to unveil in 2009. Artifacts from all over the
world will be brought together celebrating the phenomenon of "Bad Vibe Bob." Broken pieces of boards, his first wetsuit, x-rays of "tranny" head injuries and actual leashes he used are among the items to be shown in hermetically-sealed, temperature-controlled display cases.

oh man thats rich..bvb train looks awesome i want a t shirt!

Posted by: bagel at January 28, 2005 01:06 PM

love the bougainvillea in the foreground of that first shot.

and as always mexi, impressively vibrant color/contrasts on your shots. i'm assuming that comes in part from post-shooting tinkering, yes? if so, how much post-shoot tinker time you average per pic?

Posted by: loon at January 28, 2005 01:12 PM

I spend about 15 minutes on each shot that goes on the site but it's not uncommon for me to work on a print for two hours. But in all reality the Fuji velvia does all the color work. If I had a better scanner or went dig I could probably bust out a print in 15 minutes and spend only 5 on dig images.

Thanks for posting those E, I'm always amazed at the surf you get. I wrote of surfing last night, but I would have liked to surf today.

Stah, I was out of town on the 2oth. The shots of Jim were taken closer to Xmas Time.

Posted by: Mexi at January 28, 2005 01:18 PM

cadaver definitely gets post of the week, and possibly the month.

Posted by: j at January 28, 2005 01:18 PM

hilarious post cadaver.

photo heads: i used to spend quite a bit of time scanning slides and photos. i recently decided i'd rather shoot than spend hours in front of the computer...so i've been getting all my shit scanned professionally. photoworks will scan my 120 and 220 rolls for $6 with decent resolution. i think their 35mm price is the same. and recently they started working with new lab to scan slides. they do good work.

Don't start with the digital, you'll never shoot another roll of film.

Posted by: Bruce at January 28, 2005 03:11 PM

Film or Bust! OK, probably both.

Posted by: kookdom at January 28, 2005 03:54 PM

can you photog heads distinguish between a digi shot and a film shot?

Posted by: e at January 28, 2005 04:08 PM

Sweet....

Posted by: Kaiser at January 28, 2005 04:13 PM

What's "scanning?" What's "film?"

Nice rivermouth pics e. However, I won't surf most of those places if you paid me. You think Pathetica is bad after a storm...

HAHA! kaiser and j share the same brain!

Posted by: j at January 28, 2005 05:29 PM

35mm is more exciting and satisfying..

the thing with digitals is everyones caught up in image quality and fancy photo tricks, not personal expression..

noone complained before digitals arrived..

-----dont spend your weekend at home.

Posted by: seth s. at January 28, 2005 06:20 PM

Seth, I really like your work you have a good eye. But, fancy foto tricks will help you with your personal expression.

Posted by: mexi at January 28, 2005 07:10 PM

"But, fancy foto tricks will help you with your personal expression."

i know..i just have a habit of saying things i shouldnt...

Posted by: seth s. at January 30, 2005 12:53 AM

ya Seth keep it up

Posted by: bagel at January 30, 2005 03:01 AM

digitals have led to an explosion of expression through photography on the web...the web was around a decade before digital cameras came, and the explosion in photography on the web really came with the better digitals. Its just less work for the photographer.

This guy George Barnes shoots all digital, using a high-end Canon camera, good lenses and tripod, and 4 Megapixels per shot. The quality and crisp-ness he achieves is remarkable, but he probably expends more personal energy in shooting surf than in actually surfing (and he surfs a lot).

Posted by: blakestah at January 30, 2005 09:08 AM

Blakestah, I think there are some great digital photogs, Stinkeye and TOSTEE come to mind, but I hate pixels, I can live with grain. It is 10xs harder to shoot with slide film, there is no room for error and the exposure must be dead on, but you can't get equal color saturation with digital or print film. Print film has its pluses and I think Seth has done good with print film. Digital works with other sports but it's just too green for the ocean, which is why most surf photogs are still stuck on Velvia.

Posted by: mexi at January 30, 2005 06:22 PM

thanks for the compliment(s) mexi..now, if only i could afford the good film...i have to go cheap, and use;

Posted by: seth s. at January 30, 2005 06:55 PM

i don't care what ya use....it's all chinese to me.

just keep doing what you do and posting them!

Great stuff by all you photog's.....looking forward to the next batch.
