pouring rain
Pouring rain.
Drove down to Lindy
Murky San Pedro creek outflow
Surfed anyway.
Chocolate-brown, viscous wedges.
Fuzzy, yellowish murk oozing through the lineup
My body soon covered in the yellowish effluence.
Foamy, chalky, putrid, smelly.
Eating through my wetsuit and stinging my face.
The yellow goo is all over me and i start to get concerned.
I look down at my hand it's being slowly devoured by the toxic sludge.
This beautiful wave peaks up out of nowhere and i start to paddle for it.
It's a full gnarly wedge that gulps-up on the newly created sandbar.
I'm itching and scratching and my skin is now pussing and bleeding but i stroke into the fecal funnel of this sloppy Linda Mar pit.
Over the ledge and immediately i'm slotted.
Whole turds slop up and around me as i travel through the vacuous vortex.
The turd tunnel.
Try to stay dry.
I get deeper in there. A long-ass lindy tube.
I start to notice a faint bioluminescence in the water surrounding me.
I flash a gaze to my body and realize it's me that's glowing.
The yellow ooze has taken me over and i'm now fluorescent with bio-chemical runoff.
I get spit out of the barrel and immediately paddle toward shore.
I'm in intense pain all over and my skin looks transparent and droopy.
I get to my car and look in the side-view mirror and almost pass-out as i see my skull exuding this bright green radiation through my now-melting skin. I tear-off my wetsuit and cry in horror as the skin over my entire body starts to rend and slide. Muscle and tissue bleed and quiver in the chilly/rainy air.
Eventually it all sloughs off and i'm now the radioactive Linda-Mar Skeletor surfer!!!! Beware!!!
Damn, the rain sucks! Makes surf sketchy. Makes monsters out of E and others. Makes communters stupid. Gets my donut wet when I run to my car. Makes me spill my coffee too.
Anyone see the new Chad Campbell flick last week? Recap please......

ENVIRONMENT
Power play
A wave electricity-generating project could shrink a popular surf break.
By Christopher Reynolds
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
February 15, 2005
LOOKING to the ocean as a source of non-polluting electricity, San Francisco
city leaders are eager to test a set of wave-powered turbines off Ocean
Beach - if they can raise money, calm surfers and answer questions about
environmental effects and smaller swells.
The project, which could begin in May, features a 420-foot-long snake-like
device that would float four miles off the beach, collecting wave motion in
the same way inland windmills grab gusts.
The project would put San Francisco on the front lines of experimentation
with ocean power. Other ocean-energy projects operate in Scotland, Ireland,
Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Hawaii and the East Coast.
But the plan faces several obstacles. The estimated cost for the first phase
is $6 million, says Peter O'Donnell, senior energy specialist for San
Francisco. The city contributed $30,000, and Oakland provided $10,000. San
Francisco officials say they are negotiating with private companies to pay
the rest. The first step: a 22-month phase of gathering input, seeking
permits and filing reports.
Though officials at the Palo Alto-based Electric Power Research Institute
said the initial test would have little effect on swells, project
development manager Roger Bedard says a full-fledged generating station off
Ocean Beach - one of San Francisco's most popular surf breaks - could reduce
wave size in some spots by 10% to 20%. (A 10% reduction would shave seven
inches from a six-foot wave.)
"There might have to be a meeting halfway between the surfing community and
the energy community," Bedard says.
Surfrider Foundation spokesman Matt McClain wants assurances the machinery
at sea won't harm whales and other marine mammals.
"We just want to make sure that the way we go about this is not endangering
either wildlife or human recreation," McClain says. "We'd like to see some
science."
Waves in the project area usually run 3 to 5 feet tall, occasionally
reaching 20 feet. Bedard says the device would not rise more than five feet
above the surface.
"You can't see this from shore. The only time you'd ever see it is from over
the Pacific, flying," or from a boat, says Jared Blumenfeld, director of San
Francisco's environment department.
City officials said the Ocean Beach project's generation potential of 750
kilowatts would probably run at about 40% capacity, generating enough power
to sustain 150 to 200 homes. But, Blumenfeld said, "you really need to have
it in the water for a year to tell" its potential.
Meanwhile, San Francisco officials approved another ocean-power project. In
that venture, London-based HydroVenturi would pay for and place collection
devices 60 feet underwater to capture energy from tidal motion under the
Golden Gate. That $4-million effort, twice delayed, could begin as soon as
fall, but there too, finances have been uncertain.
"We really want to find technologies that replace dirty power with cleaner
Posted by: friend #1 at February 15, 2005 10:30 AMpower," Blumenfeld says. "We need to take some calculated risks with new
technologies."

I would find it difficult to believe the power generator would be large enough to cause diminishing waves throughout the entire beach. I read something a while back about the one they would place under the bridge. It's like a large inverted T. Water flows through the horizontal tube, which would resemble the top of the T, that causes a vaccuum that sucks air from above the surface which turns a turbine in the vertical tube.
Posted by: Dennis at February 15, 2005 11:23 AMpresumably there wouldn't be any bigger effect than one of those container ships going by. but it would be neat to see models on the effects.

Posted by: e at February 15, 2005 12:15 PMHas anyone had any experience with this? Looks like it might be a good thing for surf trips...
Posted by: wrybread at February 15, 2005 12:17 PMWrybread, J&J used to have a band-aid product that included drops with an applicator strip. They are genius for cuts in tropical destinations but don't handle major gashes. This product looks to be similar but able to handle the bigger mess of a nasty cut.
Also, in a desperate mode, you can use superglue in a pinch. I used it several times in the past while surfing. It stings a bit much but when you consider the alternatives, you might be happy you used it......
Posted by: Kaiser at February 15, 2005 12:25 PMfrom the internets:
Superglue Stitches
Handy home and emergency alternative to sutures
For years midwives have been using over-the-counter superglue to "suture" perineal tears after birth. It's better than stitches. Veteran backpackers have been known to pack a tiny tube of super glue for emergency repairs of deep cuts in places where there is no doctor.
Superglue is ethyl-cyanoacrylate. While fine for small cuts, it has several weaknesses when used as a substitute for heavy-duty suturing. An improved version, butyl-cyanoacrylate was developed for heavier surgical repairs, and this stuff was used widely in the Vietnam War to patch up soldiers in the field. Butyl-cyanoacrylate is a little more flexible on a wound than commercial superglue, generates fewer toxic byproducts, and is now commonly used by vets to repair animal wounds. You can buy the stuff as 3M Vetbond. This is also what midwives have started using.
In 2000, the FDA approved a new version of tissue adhesive for human use, sold as Dermabond. This new composition, octyl-cyanoacrylate, is a longer chain, still more flexible, and possess the yet-unexplained ability to inhibit bacterial growth -- a godsend in surgery. It's strong enough that it will likely replace a lot of suturing altogether someday. Small quantities of octyl-cyanoacrylate are sold to non-medicals for "research purposes" -- it's the genuine stuff, only in dispensers that aren't sterilized, and therefore not approved for human use (only animal use).
To use any cyanoacrylate on a wound, keep it on the surface layer of skin, not down in the well of the wound - imagine you are taping the top of the wound together. The glue sloughs off by itself in time.
Despite all the improvements of cyanoacrylate, small amounts of hardware store superglue will work in a pinch. I know a physician who uses ordinary superglue at home on his kid's cuts. A vial of Vetbond would be even better. It's dyed blue so you can easily see where it is on the skin and where it is not, and it is made for cuts.

Posted by: kloo at February 15, 2005 12:43 PMDermabond is good but only for non jagged cuts
Plus be careful w/ tropical/ dirty or reef cuts as dermabond/ superglue can lock in nasty bacteria
and cause a really bad infection
Sterie strips/ Duct tape are probably better because it is hard to missue them and allows for regular wound cleaning
Posted by: dermabond beta at February 15, 2005 12:44 PMwow that sounds perfect for what happened to me last night. rolled over on my cat in my sleep and the lil' bitch stuck her claws in my left eye socket... basically my eyelid and right below my eye are pretty fucked, but after last night i have no desire to have a doctor put a needle through my eyelid for stitches... that stuff might be perfect.
so the winds are pretty freaking offshore... was it really that shitty this morning?

Posted by: mike at February 15, 2005 01:28 PMIn college I wiped out on my Mtn bike on a cold and icy night while completely wasted after hitting the mirror of a parked car (I was pulling my stocking hat over my head with one hand while riding my bike but became temporarily blinded when the hat covered my eyes). I took the fall directly on my chin. It was so cold out I didn't feel anything or notice the blood which was all over my bike and jacket until I got to my apt. When I got inside, I cursed myself and proceeded to superglue the wound shut, use a bunch of TP to soak the blood and then hold it all together with shrink wrap before passing out. The TP got stuck to the superglue, my entire jaw hurt like hell and my chin scabbed over in a major way. Should have gotten stitches.
Posted by: traut at February 15, 2005 01:29 PMBagel, haha, I guess it wasn't you then. This guy was on the red fish. Anon.. Definately wasn't Curren. I've seen this guy out before, he's young with longer hair. Did a little SLO to SMC surftrip this weekend. Surfed some sharky place by myself yesterday just before dark. Fun.
Posted by: Ian at February 15, 2005 01:30 PMhey bbr, I scratched my eyeball once -hurt like hell - but the doc just applied some gooey, uh, healing paste, shut my eyelid over it, and made me wear an eyepatch. After 24 hours of being a pirate, the eye healed nicely.
any opinions how oogy the sf water is now? No postings yet, and after 2 weeks out I've got surf beer googles so bad I'm hallucinating.
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at February 15, 2005 01:38 PMAbout 7 years ago, I took the nose of my board in my eye and got 14 Stitches in my eyelid (plus 6 in my lip, and 3 in my cheek).
It happened at Santa Ana River Jetties, I drove myself to Fountain Valley Hospital and the E-room doctor took one look and said to hang out while they called in a plastic surgeon. Got the stitches removed 5 days later in his office near Fasion Island. Every other patient in the waiting room was female, over 50 and wearing mor gold than Mr T.
He did a great job and the scar is right in the crease so it is only really noticeble if I hold my eyelid closed and you look closely. I would much rather have someone insert a plastic card in my eye and then sew the lid up, than try to get it right with superglue.
Posted by: friend #1 at February 15, 2005 01:44 PMNow on that power generator thingy...imagine if they could modify the design to actually enhance the surf?? Now that would be cool.
I would give that thing a 10 year lifespan...that thing would get so jacked up on the swell of the decade.
Posted by: Reality Check at February 15, 2005 01:48 PMif i got stitches it would be like 3 or 4... nothing compared to what you got.. and it's in the fold so i'm not worried about the scar
Posted by: bbr at February 15, 2005 01:52 PMAny wave harnessing machine is going to be period-selective. It needs to synch up with the rotational drive of ocean waves. So, as surfers, our motives should be simple. 6 second periods and under, take as much energy as you like. Nothing over 10 second periods goes. In deep water that would mean selectivity for wavelengths under 100 feet long, and no selectivity for wavelengths over 300 feet long. This would work if the snake-thing had rotational elements going down to 100 ft deep in water 1 km deep. Totally clean up the surf.
Given the challenges of capturing a 14 second or 20 second period swell (wavelengths 500 and 1000 feet in deep water) it'll probably work mostly on chop anyway. Think of it as a big kelp bed that makes the surf glassy and turns the lights on.
Japan has its mightly whale, which forces waves to break inside, and the changes in air pressure push turbines.
http://www.jamstec.go.jp/jamstec/MTD/Whale/
The Brits have a Salter Duck which bobs back and forth when waves pass.
http://www.earthsci.org/energy/wavpwr/wavepwr.html#Salter
Oscillating columns are also used as air turbines. Kinda like putting a turbines on La Bufadora. Need appropriate shoreline. Same with Tapchan - in which waves force water uphill, and the water runs back downhill and cranks a turbine. Advantage in making energy on land, connected to the grid.
In Norway they have a set of underwater columns anchored to the ocean floor. They are pulled up and pushed down by the waves to create energy. I reckon you need a reef bottom to make it work.
Posted by: blakestah at February 15, 2005 01:55 PMI too caught a fin to the right socket of my face. Missed my eye ball, but got 5-7 stitches acorss my brow, and upper cheek. Did the exact same thing one week later, but got in the corner of the eye, missing the actual eye ball by about 2 mm. Also had someone on a longboard run over my calf (in santa cruz, of course) and had a nice single fin slice right through my brand new wetsuit. No damage though.

I'm so sick of you Rapestah - this you can x by 100 divide by two miles and add 100 angry souls directing their distain for you across the alpha waves.
I once punched this longboarder inthe face at Rincon - twice my size and beat his ass!
I had my head cut off by a grom on a 5'2 shortboard at Stinson Beach. Used rubber cement to put it back on so I wouldn't lose any flexibilty. Sometimes my head bounces up and down a bit if I jog, kinda like a bobble-head, so I try not to do that too often. I need to stay out the heat too. OB is good for me!

Posted by: Reality Check at February 15, 2005 02:42 PMInteresting stuff so you think that this design could essentially create a kelp effect and give us more glassy days..if so I am 100% on board. Now if it could just make the water warmer.
... and don't forget the summer offshore wind turbines mounted on Twin Peaks, Mt. Davidson and Anza Ridge. I don't know maybe it's just me but a girl bending over in that way reminds me of shitting - sorry.
Posted by: Mangina at February 15, 2005 03:15 PMWhat happens if you're surfing on the big day when it comes loose and a "420-foot-long snake-like device" comes rolling through the line-up?
Probably still worth it for clean power (and potentially cleaner waves). Not any worse than when giant pieces of driftwood get washed up.
Anybody ever been hit by any large piece of flotsam out there?

Posted by: bagel at February 15, 2005 03:24 PMIf properly constructed it could definitely create a kelp-bed-like effect. The size/scales involved make it really tough to harness long period energy in deep water, and comparably easy to harness short period energy. The tough part is how to store the energy efficiently. Floating battery pack? Landline? I think these usually use landlines and feed into the grid directly.
Could have quite an impact on littoral zone erosion.
