a few

Watched Lewis get barrelled right in front of me. Nice.
A few waves.
Not many takers.
Classic chilled-out mid-week dawnie.
Looked pretty wild and wooly from the highway.
I had a few chances for barrellage but didn't work it correctly.
Got caught in a fishing line on the way in.
Dogs digging for bones.
Butt-cold water.
Lineup craftiness pays dividends.

Session.

Aloha,

There was some talk of Costa Rica yesterday. Mexi, where do you own a house? I am trying to get some land in Marbella. I really liked Mal Pais when I was there a couple years ago, but the prices were crazy. Tried to get some land in Marbella, but things were just getting bought there in chunks. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Of course good surf out front (nearby) is a must.

Posted by: bagus at April 6, 2005 10:48 AM

Im heading to Costa Rica in May, does anyone know if its worth while to buy boards when down there? What do they go for?

Posted by: tsm at April 6, 2005 10:50 AM

google maps has a new satellite feature. You can go to the highest resolution and use the arrow keys to check out the shoreline. It is pretty smooth, but the servers may be under strain this morning.

It looks the satellite caught a good surf day at OB. Lots of cars in the lots and between the lanes of the great highway. You can see the swell about to break in different spots. There is also a lot of suspicious elongated dots in the water.

The only thing that looks good about the Dogtown movie is that there will be no Alva yappin' about how he was the best, how he found everything, how they were all so cool. Fuck him

Check out "Fruit of the Vine" for a much, much better searching for pools in USA documentary. Of course, the ONLY terrible part is when Alva starts yappin' again.

Great pic of Barry!

The Little Cove That Could was pretty fun today. Got to admit, I passed on the beach. Had a nice little morning in the water with plenty of rides. A nice rip was standing some of the better waves up. Got a few good ones. Water is a bit cold but seemed cleaned.

On another note, I love rum and I hope you do to...

Posted by: Kaiser at April 6, 2005 11:33 AM

thanks for the google sat maps link, joe o.

went out this morning for my first surf since the ripoff. short outing, many duckdives and a few decent waves, gorgeous blue water and more offshores in april. car & belongings intact & where i left them. paranoia fading. surfing is good.

i'm planning to install a lockbox in my car prior to my next trip south. can anyone recommend a particular model? installation tips?

and does anyone have any suggestions for securing surfboards in an unattended car?

Posted by: loon at April 6, 2005 11:36 AM

KaiserBuster gives Fruit Of The Vine 4.5 out of 5 stars. Great flick, great super 8 footage, great storyline for non-LA transplant types that wanted a little education on the evolution of skating and how the drought in the early 80's let skating evolve. Call it the "How Jay Adams evolved into Tony Hawk" storyline. One of my personal non-surfing favorites.

Nice call HB!

Posted by: Kaiser at April 6, 2005 11:37 AM

congrats loon!

Check this out I have it and it rocks- makes me feel way less paranoid and allows me to take my longboard/gun that won't fit in the camper shell and shortboard- just in case. Super bomber! You can even lock a kayak to it.

"real life's a game, baseball's all that's real"

Posted by: kookdom at April 6, 2005 12:07 PM

There's an old timer that leaves several boards unlocked in the back of his pickup when he surfs. No shell. Far As I know none has ever been stolen. He's well known but has made his share of enemy's by his thuggish behavior in the lineup.

Another guy I know leaves all the windows in his truck open...and his two large German Shepards inside. Seems to work.

The system artifact uses would make me a little nervous. Snip, snip and they're gone.

Locked van, key on a leash around the neck is what I do.

Oh yeah, a few fun thumpers out there. Saw a few barrels by soem rippers. also caught a few on the outside near the monkeys. Who's traveling tomorrow?

Today's words: Vox Tone Bender.

Posted by: kdalle at April 6, 2005 12:12 PM

Loon, I have an old car safe I'll give you if I can find the keys. Shoot me an email to the site. Compartment is about 6" X 4" X 4" which is enough for wallet, cell phone, and a few other items. About $50 at Home Depot if you want one new. Drill through the bottom of the sucker and find a place to bolt it through the floorboard (avoiding gas lines). I stenciled "BOLTED" on the top of it and added the key to the lanyard around my neck (with my car key). For extra protection you can score the threads on the bolt under the car. Worked great, but I don't really have a spot in my new car.

For securing boards I found a pretty good solution. You can buy plastic covered rope wire at West Marine or other hardware stores. Get a length of it, create loops at each end and swage them (sp?). West Marine has the tools. On the roof just wrap it around the board and the roof racks real snug and padlock it to the rack. It is not fool proof but most thiefs are lazy scum buckets and do "hit and run" operations. It doesn't take much to deter them. You can do the same thing inside the car by locking it to a bracket. Best with a board bag.

Regardless of where you secure it, make the lock very visible. Two times I've found that someone had untied board straps on the rack and then gave up when they saw the cable lock. Gave me a great deal of satisfaction.

Posted by: Bruce at April 6, 2005 12:13 PM

I use surfboard locks on occasion when traveling. On my longboard, a rectangular metal plug fits into the rear adjustable fin box. Then this scissor-shaped gadget hooks onto the plug. When you put a lock through the hole in the middle of the scissor-shaped thing, it cannot be removed (easily) then add a good heavy gauge cable and you have enough security to keep an honest person honest. The same scissor-shaped thing can be connected to the bar in the leash plug.

Best suggestion is travel light. Only take what you absolutely need (drivers license and money/cc) especially down along PCH where remote parking is all you have. Leave the glove box open and empty.

Last night was fun until the sideshore and wind screwed it all up. I caught about a dozen waves. A couple mushed out but most were fun. Two were memorable. Still getting used to my new stick but I was happy with the performance on the bigger sets last night. Even though the tail is wide, it hung on to steep drops. I did get launched on a takeoff though. Hit a big ledge as I was standing up and was through head-over-heels past the nose of my board. I beat the board to the bottom of the wave.

Posted by: Dennis at April 6, 2005 12:34 PM

kdalle.. are you referring to the Vox Tone Bender?

or the Dinosaural Tube Bender

Posted by: e at April 6, 2005 12:34 PM

i made my own version of this to put a locking system in the fin box... real easy, and cheap... AND it works... i have left boards locked to racks, picnic tables, trees, and been out for hours... still there

When I mentioned on this site that I leave my dog in the car, someone gave me shit that it was "cruel and unusual". I completely disagree. 1) I leave the windows down. The car does not get hot (it is white in color) 2) the dog WANTS to go. He is totally bummed if I leave him at home. He will sit in the car for hours at my house and not get out if he suspects a session is upcoming. So if he does not overheat, why is it cruel? I have never had a thing stolen from that lot that loon (was it loon?) had his shit stolen from. Parking there since long before the new entrance. And the worse two lots to the south, no problems. My dog (past and present) would rip the fucking hand off a thief who wanted anything from my car. Once he is on the beach, he is a pussycat. And in the summer when the beaches that I can take my dog to start working, I take my extra board and dog down to the beach. He sits by my stuff and has a great day.

If someone really whats your crap- consider it gone- but most theives are lazy.

With all of the surfers in the world with stuff visible and no protection - a simple deterent step is probably sufficent.

That said I think Web's stuff is the safest!

from time to time i get notes on my truck about having my dog in the back. i always have to remind myself to laugh these incidents off. though nobody truly knows what another animal, or person for that matter is thinking, i think i have a pretty good idea that my dog absolutely lives for his trips to the beach and the time spent in the back. the mere jingle of keys and he is instantly glued to the back door of my house. once the door is opened he conducts his own personal nfl combine 40 to the back of the truck, and i promise you he would mop up maurice clarett. as the ocean comes into view he starts pacing and whining in the back as his excitement level rises. once there, he gets a full beach romp before and after my session and never hesitates to jump back in my truck. i do have a cab on the back w/ ample space, and i would never ever leave him in the back if it was even remotely hot outside. which in this area is pretty rare. i think most dog owners who are kind enough to their animals (and themselves for that matter) to get out to the beach are similarly responsible. maybe those people who feel the need to continually express their dislike for this practice could refocus their energy towards the spca or pets unlimited by volunteering their time to helping these shelters out.

i drive a black truck w/ a happy golden retreiver in the back, next time you leave a note on my truck make sure to include your # so you can come w/ me to walk dogs and clean up crap at the shelter. if not.......keep it to yourself.

Athletes should have to earn their ridiculous salaries. Like golf, bowling, tennis. Give them a base pay and let their stats drive their earnings.

Posted by: tsm at April 6, 2005 01:33 PM

e- this one. I've had since '67 and just found it, rewired the battery connector and fired it up. Haven't used it in 30 years. It is really weird. Very thin, ultra fuzzy and ear-splittingly trebly (good for dark amps). It's not the ballsy sound of my Rat or the distortion of an old MXR I have but it is one of the ones that Clapton used on Disraeli Gears. Very 60's.

Posted by: kdalle at April 6, 2005 01:41 PM

I'm a Barry fan. Yeah, he is known to be a dick but I like his game. He's all business when he goes out on the field. Pitchers throw balls at him and he shrugs it off. Off field, I could care less about his attitude.

very cool Kdalle! that thing looks badass. Disraeli Gears rules. Not sure if Politician Man is on that album but i used to love that song. I used to dig on Strange Brew and Tales Of Brave Ulysses. I loved that album way before i knew what pot was. My dad used to snicker when i sang along because he knew what was up.

I play through an old MXR distortion that Jimmie from this board gave me! Love it except for the lack of an AC plug. the thing eats batteries.

I think my amp problem might actually have been a bunk cord!! Super jazzed if that's all it is!! fingers crossed.

I'm jealous of these surf obedient dogs. My pooch is great, but she's used surf time to ditch whoever I've left her with to go roll in dead seal as vigorously as possible. Then she runs after me with this hero's greeting...what a stink bomb. The first time I met one of my next door neighbors, I was still wearing the full neoprene outfit, shampooing the dog out front, both of us reeking of dead blech, covered in suds and muck, and me involuntarily yelling "UGH! YUCK!" This is the best possible way to make an excellent first impression. Doggie waits at home now.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at April 6, 2005 02:07 PM

yeah.. i have a few of those 1spot dealies. I use them for my tuner and Chorus pedal (Dennis' old one). My MXR pedal, sorrowfully, doesn't have a jack where you could plug one of those in. It's not set up for anything but battery power. My friend said that he could solder something together but i'm not sure if i trust him. Can't plug my wah-wah in either (Vox). o well.. I love the tone of the MXR though, i'm kind-of addicted to it lately.

funny how most of the people in these stadiums are under the poverty line, paying exorbatant ticket prices to go see their millionaire heroes.
Check the parking lot of an NFL or MLB game sometime before and after the game, pathetic waste of money. but hey, i'd do it if they paid me too...

I guess it is called "Darwinism"

Posted by: Nota Baseballfan at April 6, 2005 02:15 PM

SS that's funny how dogs like to roll in smelly stuff. You'd think with their sniffing ability they'd steer clear of that gross stuff.

BTW, I was out behind your apt last night and saw you on the porch. I waved to you from the outside just before getting pitched from a wave. I hope you didn't see that. If you did, it wasn't me.

Posted by: mr. know it all at April 6, 2005 02:42 PM

e - glad to hear you're putting that distortion pedal to work, despite its prodigious battery appetite! "Politician" is on "Wheels of Fire" - BEST Cream album IMHO. sad reflection on society when we pay athletes so much and so little for public service like teachers, police, fireman.

i also have a dog and do take him to the beach sometimes. but he's not that big or mean, and if the thief had any food, my dog would try to open the door for him. and if i left him on the beach he'd be looking for rollables too.

leaving a dog inside a car in many other places can be quite dangerous, but around here - particularly coastside - it seems OK on most days. i think that some people who object to it do so based on both temperature and containment-related concerns, but what many people do not realize is that dogs are actually just as/more comfortable in a small place, because it offers less territory to patrol.

Seriously now, was there an American Idol post up there somewhere?

Come on, that is a new, all-time low. Give me an angry BVB, give me the Brigade, give me people piling on Blakestah, give me EG Pimp pimpin El Granada, give me the localism discussion for the 139th time.....but not American Idol!

Baseball is still America's sport. Slowly getting replaced by football. I played both growing up. They are both great to play. Baseball is boring to watch unless it is the home team.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program:

Winds look to be back on it. B-Stah says rain tonight. I will cross reference that with what Bill Martin (not Billy Martin, RIP) says around 10:19 p.m. tonight to decided if surf is possible for tomorrow. I doubt it. Damn. One good day a week? Must be getting to spring time. This morning was fun while it lasted.

Got the Eric Clapton "Sessions for Robert J" disc and DVD recently. If you are a fan of clapton you'll really dig it. His band is so friggin' tight it's just stupid. The way they cover the tunes is awesome too.

Plus the opening scene of EC pulling up to the studio in his Carrera 4S is classic. "Oh is everybody here already?" Yeah Eric, they were here 5 hours ago setting all your shit up so you can waltz in and rip the shit out of Milkcow's Calf Blues.

Sheep. Most surfers see someone out or someone get a good ride and figure that's the place to be. Plenty of spots to surf alone. Trick is not to make it look too good. I've got lots of experience at that.

Posted by: at April 6, 2005 04:10 PM

i really appreciate all the replies on the security questions.

bruce, i will measure a few spots on my car and get back to you about the car safe, that sounds like a good first step. thanks.

the tip to leave the glovebox open is a good one -- i locked mine but that was not much of a deterrent, thief broke into it so now that's just one more thing to repair. and from what i can tell the thief did not even look in a few other little nooks. did i mention that they took an orange, a luna bar, some dental floss and my old running shoes & socks too? i get only slight consolation imagining the culprit being overcome by fungi that came from my feet.

cronk -- how much $ did you spend building your own gumby lock system? i like the design, seems pretty easy to replicate too.

i might just pay for this one but i'd prefer a combo lock. if you don't mind sharing your design, email a description to pnmcs at comcast dot net.

Bagus,

Mal Pais is an amazing place, the town of gringos. All the Ticos have been priced out. My place is in the southern end of Jaco, next to Roca Loca. We own our land and house and we bought it from a friend a couple years ago, to help them out,.Since then it has been appraised at 4x's what we paid. Nuts and very sad for the Tico's who are starting out, similar to what has happened in California. My wife and I intend to live in either Mex or Central America in the winter and AK in the warm summer months.

TSM,
Carton shapes out of Jaco (1 1/2 hours from San Jose) and sells nice boards for about 280$, he is making a meager amount off every board because he buys blanks from the US and Brazil. It cost about 100$ one way to ship boards and sometimes more. here is Carton email, cartonshaper@hotmail.com

I totally agree.. it has been happening here in Hawaii for years. My wife and I are hunting around for a small piece of land to build a house that's near good consistent surf. Any ideas? I imagine Marbella is going the way of Mal Pais and so many other areas in CR. I was thinking Panama, but too many gated communities. Where's there any coastline left? Any interested, I am also starting to look at Puna on the Big Island and the backside of Maui. Maybe a co-op surf house for the niceness gang?

my favorite wipeout is the one bruce irons took in lost across america vol. 1 (i think that was the surfer/movie), where you can see the shadow of his body going over the falls.

I've witnessed plenty of instances in which people locked their dogs in cars on hot days and I've watched plenty of people overreact to a dog being in a car or shell of a truck. But what beats it all is the dip that is about "dog's rights", "Dogs should be free, man", or "I don't believe in leashes, bro"...that's bs, I love dogs, but they're unpredictable...they'll bite if they feel threatened whether it's a lab or a pit and people that don't have the common sense to keep their animals under control don't deserve to keep pets.

Hey Mexi

We didn't have problems with our dog for 15 years, then he took the lip off a toddler for reasons only known to him. I have to stand by my "uptightness" about people that won't take responsibility for their dogs running around while they're nowhere to be found...just my personal prejudice I guess

Anyone whose pet dog bites the lip off a toddler should be comfortable with parents quickly chopping head off of said dog.

Most dogs that bite children do it in the comfort of the family home. I have been bitten by dogs twice, once as a child, my cousins german shepard bit my hand and I needed stitches, the second time I was bitten and attacked by a leashed pit bull as I walked out of the Elbow Room. The first bite taught me a lot about limits with dogs and boundries, the second was unavoidable. Dogs are genrally more aggresive when they are on a leash. A good dog owner socializes their animal at a young age including exposing the dog to children. Most kids who approach my dog ask if they can pet him, then I show the kids how to approach a friendly dog. It is the dogs that are always leashed and have little exposure to children that you've got to watch out for.
