sessions
What exactly does it mean to have a "session"?
Music session, skate session, painting session, bowl-smoking session, philosophical session, chess session, programming session. The first time i came in contact with the word was in Junior High when my friends and i used to go to the Pocono mountains for ski trips. One of my friends used to say that we were having a "session" when we'd all rat-pack together and bomb the same little Big Boulder mogul run 800 times in one day. The idea of a session meant something akin to an uninterrupted chunk of time during which you practiced or performed something you enjoy doing. We'd have ski sessions all day and then come home and have ping-pong sessions at night. I loved sessions. Then in college weed came around and the idea of "having a session" took on an entirely new meaning. After studying or whatever someone might say, "Let's go back to my place for a session." We'd cruise back to his/her place, take bong rips, listen to Zappa or Phish, kick back and relax. By the end of college my friends and i were getting together for a "sesh, sesh, sesh, sesh and sesh." Puffing, footbag, musical jam, burritos, chess. To this day the idea of a session has a special place in my heart. It means burrowing down and working on some discipline or art that you love. Telling yourself that you're going to have a session forces you to chisel out some quality-time for whatever that activity might be. Something about the idea of a session also connotes that the activity will be intense and full-on. If you're just going to "play a little music," you might pick up your sax or cello or whatever and dittle around for 10 minutes and play a song or two then put your instrument down. But if you're going to have a session then you'll pick up your sax and commit yourself to pushing it, working through shit, developing.
Many fulfilling sessions to y'all.

Hey Mexi
We didn't have problems with our dog for 15 years, then he took the lip off a toddler for reasons only known to him. I have to stand by my "uptightness" about people that won't take responsibility for their dogs running around while they're nowhere to be found...just my personal prejudice I guess
My response..
Most dogs that bite children do it in the comfort of the family home. I have been bitten by dogs twice, once as a child, my cousins german shepard bit my hand and I needed stitches, the second time I was bitten and attacked by a leashed pit bull as I walked out of the Elbow Room. The first bite taught me a lot about limits with dogs and boundries, the second was unavoidable. Dogs are genrally more aggresive when they are on a leash. A good dog owner socializes their animal at a young age including exposing the dog to children. Most kids who approach my dog ask if they can pet him, then I show the kids how to approach a friendly dog. It is the dogs that are always leashed and have little exposure to children that you've got to watch out for.
Posted by: at April 7, 2005 10:23 AMWent to a random surf shop in Redondo last night for a new leash. Store had all these vintage skateboards and a Lopez red lightning bolt board in the window. The owner, a short japanese/hawaiian guy came out and we ended up talking story for an hour. He was amazing cool and chill with all that he had done and seen. He came over from Hawaii in the 50's and ended up in Hermosa working with Noll, Velzy Webber, Jacobs....all the legendary board builders around here. Telling tales a of barebacking sessions at Steamers lane in the middle of winter b/c "they knew nothing else" Wetsuits came out and you were heckled and called a pussy if you wore one. Just all these tales of empty top waves along the Cal coast, driving to Baja and not seeing any other non-mexican for weeks/months, driving to SD to surf and knowing everyone out. I walked out of there and to my car and just had the chills and so stoked meeting this "legend". Just would say his name was Tak. Could this have been Guy? Donald still around?

Posted by: at April 7, 2005 10:57 AMHb - That would have been Don Takayama at CHP Surf. I have family down there, so I always try to stop in and say hi to Tak and/or his pretty wife after I've had lunch next door at Riveria. Defintitely a legend, check his entry in the Encyclopedia of Surfing for some background, also he was mentioned in TSJ several issues back as a many time winner of some funky surf contest in Encinitas(?) back in the sixties, I forget the name (anyone?), where you had to do something like down a six-pack before you paddled out for your heat. Chill dude.
By the way, I was down there last week, where were the waves?

Everyone in his group called each other holmes, hommie, homebody, homenuts, etc. I thought that was how he got the name. Santa Cruz was pretty cool back then, I loved sharing waves with who are now the current stars. I remember going down the bare cliff to the hook hanging onto some rope on the way down. The place seemed so surfing friendly compared to the san mateo coast I normally rode. Now I gots to agree it is pretty sterile.

Blakestah fin the entire fin rotates.
Waltie's Swivel fin is more similar to mine, just a different mechanism inside the box, and was intended to replace a REAR FCS fin only. Same plug side and everything, pretty well designed actually, but rotating rear fins (on a thruster) aren't very performance enhancing.
I also know of about 4 other rotating fins people have made.

Now have solid lifestyles and are happy/engaging/well-adjusted people. not a waste of life at all. Most of the people i know who went to Exeter/Andover/Choate/Deerfield/Lawrenceville puffed hard in high school. I didn't even see the stuff in my lower-middle class public high school.
Posted by: e at April 7, 2005 03:21 PMe - i feel ya on that. some of the smartest people i know have been puffin hardcore since freshman year of high school. Always kinda pissed me off to see these people just breeze by school without even trying, while i am working my ass off to get a C.
I live with 3 huge stoners who have been dippin into all kinds of other drugs since they were young and still get strait A's. not the drugs, it's the person.

Posted by: Jerry Garcia at April 7, 2005 03:49 PMon the drug topic....i was one of those drug-free kids til i was 24. in hindsight, being that way stunted my social growth and variety of experiences. my circle of friends was entirely too narrow/like-minded and my self-righeousness turned people away. moving to sf changed my attitude towards drugs and users. some of the sharpest people i know out here were into drugs (even hard drugs) at a young age. initially these people baffled me, but over time i saw that their experiences gave them perspectives and ideas that staunch anti-drug types would never have or understand. but on the other hand, some people do abuse drugs.

Posted by: korewin at April 7, 2005 04:25 PMsimilar to dead show:
Posted by: e at April 7, 2005 04:26 PM- A fun surf with just a few friends in the rain.
- Jamming hard for hours.
- good-vibes house party where people end up raging harder than expected.
similar to a dead show - Darkstar Orchestra, Further Fest/Dead show, Rainbow gathering or possibly Burning Man.
Posted by: traut at April 7, 2005 04:40 PME - Just curious, any chance you went to Lawrenceville? I know some peeps from there but i think i could be a little younger.
Posted by: tsm at April 7, 2005 04:41 PMIMHO a fun surf with just a few friends has absolutley nothing in common with a Dead Show. Dead show has six trillion smelly hippies twirling as they are tripping balls on acid. I can name 10,000 places I would prefer to be.
Alas music is one of those things like beauty that everyone has their own opinion on and there is no definitive answer.
While I am no fan of the dead, last night at the Giants game they played a Dead song that I am not familiar with that had one of the funkiest beats I had ever heard, seriously someone call Dr. Dre and tell him to sample that. Anyone know what track I am talking about?? Very catchy tune.
didn't go to lawrenceville though i grew up close to there. Tons of my college friends went to all those schools. I went to a sub-par, white-trashy big-ass suburban Philly public high school called William Tennent (next to council rock/bensalem/Truman/CB East). It was pretty weak and a bit scary but i had a little crew.
Posted by: e at April 7, 2005 05:00 PMe,
If you don't have the bills for a Keeley mod, then check out ebay (I included a link below). I just bought a modded TS-7 with the 808 chip (from a non-famous modder) for $70 and the thing makes my amp scream.
On the dog topic, my wife asked a guy if our two year old could pet his leashed dog, and he said yes. I wasn't around or else I would have told her to keep away from that half pitbull/half Jack Russell Terrier mix. Anyway, owner and my wife start chatting, not paying attention, while girl and dog go behind park bench. Next thing you know the previously friendly dog has torn a 9 stitch gash in my daughter's cheek and lip. I don't blame the dog or my daughter. I blame the owner and my wife for not paying attention.
Posted by: steve-o at April 7, 2005 05:00 PMThe similarity between Dead shows and surfing is a no brainer. They both make you feel good and are shared with cool people. They are both free form and outside the structure of the norm, and are experiences that can only be understood by those who have been there. I started fanatically surfing the same year I saw first Dead show, '78,(new years winterland) and the two went hand in hand for many years. Ventura, south swell at the point and in to the show....Coincidentally I quit going to Dead shows when I felt the crowd changing it's vibe, early 90's. Hmmm, connection with surfing vibe? I refuse to quit surfing. The assholes will not ruin it for me.

7th grade and highschool are completely different. 7th grader are in the midst of puberty, when the body is developing. It is a tough time for kids, pot is not what is needed. From experience dealing with emotionally disturbed teens and preteens, especially in middle and elementary school I see nothing but negative effects in children of this age doing any mind altering substance, they have poor judgement at this age, especially boys. On the other hand I see some of my past students that went on to become heads in highschool and it makes me smile because I know they are well-adjusted and have developed well and they are supported at home. I know of a few of my students who puff and I see that along with the weed there are gangs, absent parents, and trouble. I teach in a tough school where nearly 90% of the kids get free or reduced lunches.

ain't wisdom great?
Posted by: korewin at April 7, 2005 05:32 PMRight on Mexi its nice to hear that from a teacher. I couldn't agree more that the connection between grades and learning is limited at best. Some of the biggest idiots I've known got straight As in what ever school I knew 'em from.
My younger brother (kind of a smart ass) said in high school that to really capture anything meaningful with grades you have to factor in the amount of time spent. He got As and Bs with very little effort. Some people figure out grades are a racket earlier than others.
Regarding the drugs in 7th grade issue, I knew some kids who were smoking pot and doing other things (coke maybe, 3rd base) in 6th / 7th grade, and they all pretty much ended badly. They were the burn outs who taught kids like me how to smoke bongs in the back of a van in the high school parking lot & sold us bags. The kids (like me) who waited 'til highschool seemed to do better. Pretty heavy smoking & psychedelics for a few years didn't prevent me from going to decent schools later or from doing ok in them. The background for both burn outs & non was supportive & middle / upper middle class. I went to both public and private schools k-12.

I don't necessarily think pot "caused" whatever challenges these people faced, but it was either a contributing factor or sympton of larger issues.
