skaaate

just back from the skate park with my boss.
Alameda
some surfy lines
beautiful view

sounds like people scored waves this morning.
nice.
ocean looked fabulous at 7:15.
Slight offshore
Deep, seductive rich blue
didn't see the waves.

thanks for all the comments yesterday!

Life.

danny way

Saw some nice rides first lot. Got outside, went for one...too late...pulled back. Cleaned up by the next one and didn't get back out. Dang it.

Posted by: at April 14, 2005 11:23 AM

damn, skating with the boss.....now that's a good job.

that last pic of danny way is crazy. he built himself a super-sized ramp complex that he just destroys. for anyone who hasn't seen a skate video in awhile check out the DC video. it is awesome.

Posted by: rza at April 14, 2005 11:32 AM

Fun waves this a.m. Seals, whales, rusty nails.

Check this out for grilled or raw oysters:

1 tasty oyster
minced tomatillo
dash of butter (or go without)
splash of Mezcal

MMMMmmm!!

hey all, i have a decent decision to make for a summer job. knowing that you'll be working full time, would go do a summer in lisbon, portugal or managua, nicaragua? probably will not have a car in either spot and would have to be weekend warrior in nica...

Posted by: gvibe at April 14, 2005 12:09 PM

Don't want to offend but Managua is a shit hole...

Posted by: Mexi at April 14, 2005 12:22 PM

Tom posted this last night.. Figure I would throw it on today for the masses. Also, the DC video isn't that good imho, but Danny Way's bonus section is unbelievable. He is merging snowboarding and skateboarding.

From Tom:
Waves have been cooking again. Surfed Serangan on the "other side" as the winds were "wrong" but there were 10 foot faces with straight offshr\ores for 2 days there. They also call it Turtle Island, it was crowded but I was able to get "heaps" of waves for some reason. Rizal Tanjung was out and a bunch of other ripping locals.

Last two days we have been back at glassy Uluwatu where the surf has been coming consistently overhead to double. Met 2 dudes from SF and one got a fucking late bombing throwing thick nastiness as his friend and I hooted. Both of the dudes surf well.

The pics you posted above show this 16 year old Aussie (black shirt)who has been killing the place I've surfed with him and his buddies every day and the guy in the red trunks has been surfing bali for 30 years and is a ghost shaper for mctavish in Oz. He likes the Bintang too.

Dude on bottom in black shorts I drink Bintangs with daily as well in the Warungs. Also older and a good surfer.

Another photo co. has got some shots of me on the peak and i will try and get them loaded.....we have more overhead swell and good winds forecasted.

Oops, that top reply is mine; the ol' subconscious ego going anonymous to hide my paddling lameness ...

Posted by: kloo at April 14, 2005 12:29 PM

What's the DC video? Is there a URL??

Posted by: Jack at April 14, 2005 12:36 PM

fuck skating i suck at it

Posted by: brian at April 14, 2005 12:38 PM

gvibe. i've spent some time in Managua and mexi is absolutely correct. that place is "hella" scary! seriously! if you don't have a car there's no way you'll get to the surf. It's a few hours drive to the closest surf spot from Managua. The city is no-joke full-on dirty grimy wild 3rd world gnarliness. I would advise against living there for any extended period of time. Hurricanes, earthquakes, extreme poverty, civil war and drugs make for some gruesome cityscapes.

Lisbon on the other hand sounds pretty cool.

Posted by: e at April 14, 2005 12:41 PM

spring sux!!!!!!!!

Tom- Once you back... if I even see you paddalin for a wave near me Im gonna trim that keg of yours!!!!!

Posted by: pez at April 14, 2005 12:47 PM

I'd go to Portugal. Sick spots around there, beautiful city cool people, hot chicks.

Went out ot Eastside SC yeterday evening. Really fun small waves but what a scene! I think SC is at critical mass right now. Too many people too few waves. The faces in the lineup were comedy too- like you picked out a handful of people from anywhere in SF, nothing wrong with that just really diverse. Standard pack of like 30 people/pros sitting so close they were touching each other, crying like babies at eyeryone and everything. One seriously obese chick was yelling at everyone, just screaming "Get off of my waves, Arrrghh " and couldn't even catch a single wave- what a joke! This other chick had full makeup on???!! And that was a Wed night. It was so funny because everyone was trying to regulate everyone so no one really paid attention at the end just a bunch of noise.

Kind of sad- but really funny too! Oh well I caught my share and went home.

comedic take on the slice of society in the water. i've seen that fat chick out locally, or at least another verbal fat chick who couldn't catch a wave if her triple bypass and stomach stapling depended on it.

Posted by: j at April 14, 2005 12:57 PM

managua

Posted by: at April 14, 2005 01:00 PM

That sounds like a nightmare Artifact.

Seeing that Traut post of "lets go longskating" killed me this morning. Would have loved to hit the hills with you, if i was 400 miles closer. Even got some new 74mm wheels the other day. Damn. How was it?

You know it is summer, or close to it, when the fickle but FUN jetty you surfed all winter solo now is shared wtih 4 others. Cool heads though, smiles, good rides, sunrise, airplanes takin' off overhead( to some tropical island no doubt). Damn. I love my 1/3 of life.

Posted by: Hb at April 14, 2005 01:01 PM

Managua looks plush. Is she sitting on her door step in that picture? This wind is killer. J.. tripple bypass.. haha. Hb, you guys must be suffering too. Any where down there shielded by the wind?

Posted by: Ian at April 14, 2005 01:11 PM

My boy Dave despite being 35+ still knowing how to work the tranny......

Yo HB, the concrete was xtra smooth, clean and fast. Caught way more rides than I did this am at ram adnil.

Posted by: traut at April 14, 2005 01:13 PM

the damn "hite" had offshores but was walled up closeout this am -- shoulda skated

Posted by: mig at April 14, 2005 01:19 PM

Nice Traut.

And nowhere is blocked by 35mph straight west winds.

Clean and glassy though the last two mornings....

Posted by: Hb at April 14, 2005 01:19 PM

yeah hb.. would have been fun to carve with you. Traut, my friend Julien and i found a little run out of the wind and meandered our way down 8 or 9 times. Traut did some smooth 180 powerslide things. I just pretended like the street was a giant wave. Julien farking bombed the thing like the psycho high-school kid he is. He likes going fast. Thanks to Traut for the motivation!

Posted by: e at April 14, 2005 01:21 PM

I skate like e, wish I could skate like Traut, and too scared to skate like Julien.

Posted by: Hb at April 14, 2005 01:28 PM

gVibe - Plenty of surfspots close to Lisbon - namely the Ericeira area about 1 hour away which is one of Europe's premiere surfing destinations. Summer can be very small though.
Go for it.

Yeah , it wasn't that bad cuz I was catching waves/ nice day. There was some of the old crew out there Frosty etc. I was wondering what was going through that guys head whose seen the full circle of SC.

I don't really care in the end- Actually that crap just encourages me to burn those people. Yeah it's kind of a bust- but if I see some dude whose just burned 5 guys in a row who is screaming at people- I don't lose any sleep over dropping in.

Yeah J- triple bypass is right- her longboard was like 4 inches thick

F it- I'm taking up kiteboarding... see ya in the H2O next fall- Ok maybe a few days in between

Posted by: artifact at April 14, 2005 01:39 PM

Artifact:

if you pick up the kiteboarding in Alameda, the best beginner's spot around, feel free to stop by and pick me up on your way. Posey tube on a bicycle fucking sucks. I'm looking forward to a having a board under my arm too.

I've just been using the training the kite lately; gonna get the rest of my gear with the tax return. It's fun to see the dudes who get stoked about flying their stunt kites at Berkeley Marina. They'll come over and chat with you while flying one-handed. I've learned that I'm a bagger...someone who uses a kite without a frame. No shame in that.

hey artifact, any more pics from your alaskan foray?

Posted by: j at April 14, 2005 02:04 PM

traut...

after hearing e's description of your skating
i am glad i opted to surf with you instead.
my skating is gonna need a lot of work to
hang with you. go traut!

even though the surf was meager this a.m....
as usual, i had a blast! surfing is so fun!

Posted by: korewin at April 14, 2005 02:19 PM

checked the beach this morning but decided to pass due to neck issues. glad some of you got some.

i haven't skated in a couple of months. gotta dust off my board and bomb some hills. sounds like you guys had a blast.

i concur with e. managua is a dangerous 3rd world city. i wouldn't want to live there. the rest of the country seemed to be fairly safe though. especially way out by the surf!

there was an article in the chronicle this past sunday on
nicaragua nica.

Posted by: at April 14, 2005 02:32 PM

that was me.

Posted by: lerm at April 14, 2005 02:38 PM

Yeah Andrew I'm still on the trainer but I'm sure I'll end up at Alameda- shoot me an email

Here ya go J:

Look close at this one to see the rider- Python "big mountain" the top is 55-60 degrees the rest about 45- One guy did the whole 3500 ft face in 5 turns- ballsy!

Sluff!

Check out the Chute in the background. One guy hiked up the chute from the bottom- Ripped an avy in the chute and skiied ice all the way down- Sketchy

Posted by: Maxi at April 14, 2005 02:59 PM

artifact, nutty photos. if i could ever see any of that stuff in person i would be probably shit my pants. disregarding that, how expensive is it to get runs up there?

Posted by: rza at April 14, 2005 03:01 PM

Lisboa is a world class city on the water. Summertime will be hot, surf will be flat a lot, but the women are amazingly beautiful and better chances of surf are close by.

Euro is powerful though $, so beware!

Managua sounds terrible.

How did Kelly's Cove get its name?

Pretty cheap considering An A star helis engine is completely replaced with a brand new one after 100 hours- Plus pilot & guide- Runs are between 4500-6200 vert

welcome to the neighborhood bbr..you can get to sloat in 15 mins via 280 if you can pull lunchtime surfs
i recommend victors for burritos, brickhouse for sandwiches and southpark for hot days.

Bbr -
I second the Victor's rec. Also the South Beach Cafe is good for pizza and sometimes scenery

Its not a bad neighborhood. I see cars in the garage of my building that I recognize from the ob lots all the time.

Yeah Right! from Girl is a pretty rad skate flick. Remind me next time I'm gonna see ya e and I'll hook it up.

Yum, Chavos enchiladas...

Posted by: mwsf at April 14, 2005 05:02 PM

My first job out of school I worked right across from SBC when it was still a bunch of decrepit wherehouses. I am getting old fast.

Victors was there back then, that lady that runs it is cool. Primo Patio is cool, great jerk chicken, really nice couple runs it. If you are going for a more fancy sit down lunch we used to always cruise over to Delancey Street which is a really cool organization that offers jobs to ex cons.

A little SF History, the Mcdonalds on the corner of 3rd & Townsend used to be Burger Island which is where the famous Dirty Harry line was filmed, Go Ahead make my day.

Posted by: Reality Check at April 14, 2005 05:04 PM

Double thumbs up on Chavos!! Much better than Victors, I forgot about that spot.

Posted by: Reality Check at April 14, 2005 05:05 PM

sweet history...burger island is across the street now..look out for chavos sometimes though i still love it, had an experiance once..ya delancy street! awesome organization, theres something about a dude filling up your water glass who for all you know might have shanked someone in the eyeball. (sensiguard: not all prisoners are bad people)

Posted by: bagel at April 14, 2005 05:11 PM

that sounded kind of gay

Posted by: bagel at April 14, 2005 05:15 PM

There used to be a guy at Delancey that would take all orders by memory...even for large groups. He would never screw up or forget anyone. As a former waiter, I was very impressed.

Posted by: Reality Check at April 14, 2005 05:26 PM

i vote Victors over Chavos.
21rst amendment has good burgers too.

Posted by: e at April 14, 2005 05:32 PM

Good burgers but pretty bad service.

Posted by: Reality Check at April 14, 2005 05:45 PM

got a few north of the city today, fun until the wind started to howl. My grandmother lived in Aptos for 40 years so I spent a fair bit of my youth in SC...it as a funky mellow place at one time but you couldnt PAY me to surf there now, so many people and so much attitude that it makes the SF black board and wetsuit crowd seem dwonright jovial!
I woulnt be so bummed about paying taxes if I knew they weren't going to fund the war machine...
peace

Kelly was an old surfer. Back in the day, there were some folks who kinda loitered at Kelly's Cove...we all did it as kids, but some never left. Kelly was one of them, but WAY before our time. Surfing in the 30s and 40s.

Posted by: A Kelly's Cove Local Boy at April 14, 2005 06:01 PM

Victors is the SHIT! It is all about the salsa and the grilled chicken. That lady at Victor's makes that slasa FRESH!!! She also has a brother in mainland MEX (central) she can set you up with that is not too far from the ocean - very cool woman.

Only thing about Victor's is I used to like it a little better when I thought she only called me guapo. The chile verde and carnitas are pretty solid though.

Posted by: Eric at April 14, 2005 08:08 PM

the fishbone lp is making me feel old again...

Just got in from a long day of work and thought I'd add some more info about kelly's- the old local surfer is a go I bet, I've heard that before. But I have also been told that Shanghai Kelly used that end of the beach to occasionally load drugged marks for his East Asia crews. According to a knowledgable SF historian (he taught SF history in the PS & was second generation when he was born in the late '30's) people began to get wise to Cap'n Kelly's ways and would watch his ships as they left the docks to be sure that he was only loading cargo and not unwilling crew. To thwart this he would sail around to Kelly's Cove and send a rowboat to the beach where it would be met by a mule driver who had hauled a cargo of drugged and unconcious sailors from Jackson square to the beach where they would be loaded on board ship. They would come to well out to sea and be defacto crew on the way to Asia. Kelly would have free labor, the mule driver would get paid for a rough trip from North Beach to OB and everyone was happy- well probably not the shanghai'd.

I did a job in the old Hippodrome theater that was supposed to have been one of Kelly's "hiring halls". We uncovered the original dance hall mural on the wall- can can dancers doing their thing- and it was like walking into a small time Tut's tomb. Unfortunately it was too fragile to do anything with and we just covered it back up. This was before the digital camera was really around- we didn't even get a picture of it. We aren't Europe old here but we aren't Phoenix either...

I'm a big fan of SF history. I can't walk by a bronze plaque without stopping to read it. This city was crazy in the period between the transcontinental railroad and the Panama Canal. At least now the transplants are meek programmers whom are Miss Manners compared to the sailors that made up the city for it's first 50 years. Good stuff goodmorning.
