glassy cold windswell
No checking just surfing.
The blind go-out.
Met Robme and Lerm.
Waves on offer.
Kinda funky
Kinda fun.
A few speed racers
A few dumpy barrel-type situations.
Arctic-Ocean temperatures.
Still itchy from the thaw.
Robme scored a few stylish top-turns.
Lerm made due with minimal neck movement.
Give thanks we have a gigantor beach break.
We're not forced into Santa Cruz crowds.
Surfing is fun as shit.
Takeoffs rule.
The art of catching waves is unreal.
Waves physically manifested through water.
Purely translated natural energy.
stoked.
Some interesting words from goodmorning about SF history and the etymology of Kelly's Cove:
Just got in from a long day of work and thought I'd add some more info about kelly's- the old local surfer is a go I bet, I've heard that before. But I have also been told that Shanghai Kelly used that end of the beach to occasionally load drugged marks for his East Asia crews. According to a knowledgable SF historian (he taught SF history in the PS & was second generation when he was born in the late '30's) people began to get wise to Cap'n Kelly's ways and would watch his ships as they left the docks to be sure that he was only loading cargo and not unwilling crew. To thwart this he would sail around to Kelly's Cove and send a rowboat to the beach where it would be met by a mule driver who had hauled a cargo of drugged and unconcious sailors from Jackson square to the beach where they would be loaded on board ship. They would come to well out to sea and be defacto crew on the way to Asia. Kelly would have free labor, the mule driver would get paid for a rough trip from North Beach to OB and everyone was happy- well probably not the shanghai'd.
I did a job in the old Hippodrome theater that was supposed to have been one of Kelly's "hiring halls". We uncovered the original dance hall mural on the wall- can can dancers doing their thing- and it was like walking into a small time Tut's tomb. Unfortunately it was too fragile to do anything with and we just covered it back up. This was before the digital camera was really around- we didn't even get a picture of it. We aren't Europe old here but we aren't Phoenix either...
- goodmorning
For the silence and solo sessioning, beachbreaks rule!!
Posted by: Hb at April 15, 2005 10:36 AMNice story, goodmorning!
E, Jerm, great surfing you. Yall are gettin' hard to keep up with, particulary when you throw in a little bit of current.
Posted by: robme at April 15, 2005 10:44 AMCool story. I heard SF was famous for grabbing Russian sailors that way. The Russain sailors became AWOL and could not return due to severe punishment.
No punishment this am, other than trying to be in the right spot at the right time. I was the first one out at the south-end this am. But it was really hard to get into a peak. I drifted to monkeyland (funkyland this am)and grabbed one insider cuz the outside wasn't happenin. Made the drop, the bottom turn, closed-out, I submarined. Got out of the water ran back up the beach paddled out again and caught a short but fast left that made it all worth it.

JACK MCCOY SURF FILM FESTIVAL
FAIR BITS USA TOUR rides into USA cinemas this season! This will be your only chance to see Fair Bits on the Big Screen... EVER!!! Many shows are ONE NIGHT ONLY, so make sure you get there early to secure your seat before tickets are sold out.
This summer’s festival will also feature McCoy’s surf cult classic Bunyip Dreaming’s on the big screen. Bunyip Dreaming is touring with the 2005 festival to celebrate the best of Jack, and it’s soon to be digitally re-mastered DVD release. A Bunyip is an imaginary creature of Australian legend, which is said to haunt swamps and ‘Billabongs.
It is with great pleasure that we are taking FAIR BITS around the world with the Billabong Jack McCoy Surf Film Festival and giving audiences the opportunity to see this great surfer in action in the traditional surf movie fashion. Taj is an artist whose dance on a wave has to be seen to be believed. A dance that has now evolved into an art form, surfing both on a wave and in the air. Back in 1998 when Taj started surfing for the Billabong Team, Jack had the opportunity to help produce his first production...SABOTAJ. It was obvious that Taj was a great surfer back then, and SABOTAJ wet the appetite of many a young grom worldwide. A couple of years later, Taj joined up with videographer Matt Gye to produce MONTAJ. This time around Taj really got involved in the whole video making process, helping Matt select the shots, the music and the overall look of the video. The result was MONTAJ winning Video of the Year at the 2002 Surfer Magazine Readers Poll Awards. Three years on and Taj is ready to release his latest creation, FAIR BITS. I believe that there is no other professional surfer who is more involved in video production than Taj. He’s fanatical about every aspect of the shooting, music and production. For this project he has brought in the Malloy Brothers, Brendan and Emmett. Emmett and Brendan came on board for this new project to help Taj connect with some established editors and creative filmmakers. After a two-year production, their collaborative efforts resulted in a series of short clips that make up the film. The opportunity to share this film in our festival format on the BIG SCREEN is a real honour. The movie will be available on DVD mid 2005. We hope you enjoy the ride.
About The Malloy Brothers
Fair Bits is a combination film from famous surf film directors, and is being produced by the Malloy Brothers. Emmett and Brendan have produced many critically acclaimed and commercially successful films including September Session and Shelter, and music clips for Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Metalica and Black Eyed Peas. Their latest project Fair Bits features the collaborative efforts of 7 filmmakers from a range of different worlds and backgrounds. “Every segment in the film is entirely different and the directors have come up with really clever visual clips” Brendan Malloy. Fair Bits has it all including chopper footage from six foot super tubes, towing in to a Malaysian wave pool, and a sequence with Taj, Rob Machado and Kelly Slater attempting to ride a door, shovel, snowboard, skis, guitar case and a coffee table. FAIR BITS is a surfing film not to be missed on the big screen!
About Jack McCoy
After almost 30 years in the business, Jack McCoy has arguably become the world’s best surf moviemaker with over twenty films to his name. He was inspired to make surfing films by the ones he saw growing up as a kid in Hawaii.
He directed his first movie Tubular Swells in 1975 and other credits include Nine Lives, Occy the Occumemtary, Storm Riders and To’ Day of Days. Jack’s latest film Blue Horizon was two years in the making. The film won the Surfer Magazine 2004 award for best cinematography. Another McCoy Classic.
With a USA premiere in Newport Beach California on April 6, the 2005 Billabong Jack McCoy USA Surf Film Tour continues on a 5 week national tour, concluding in New Hampshire on Monday May 16.

Posted by: bagel at April 15, 2005 11:33 AMI had heard from several peeps that Kelly's Cove was name after a guy (Jack or John) that used to swim out to Seal Rock every morning.
Here's a quote from a short thread from Woody LaBounty's excellent site:
"The third-hand story I heard about the origin of Kelly's Cove was that it was named after some old guy (or young guy) who was an ocean swimmer (or surfer), and who every morning (or evening) swam out to (or paddled out to) Seal rocks (or the Cliff House) and back again. One day, though, exahusted from his efforts at swimming (or paddling), the swimmer (or surfer) passed out and died on the beach between the Cliff House and the Lurline Pier, a stretch of sand henceforth always known as Kelly's Cove."

Posted by: kdalle at April 15, 2005 11:37 AMI'll be at the 7PM show. 9 is just too late for me. I'll fall asleep... I think everyone else should go to the 9 PM'er though. Dp for Sat will have lighter crowds!
Posted by: Dennis at April 15, 2005 11:44 AMJust a few takers south mid-morning; mercifully easy paddles, really pleasant, glassy, calm conditions, but chilly water. When I got there everyone was inside, but I'd seen some stuff further out so I kept paddling, and the outside got to be happening more and more as the tide went down. Pretty disorganized, and plenty of waiting, but some really fun drops and faces in the mix. I kooked like five backside take-offs on not-so-sketchy drops. Must've been "speed bumps", or maybe "jacking".
Could've been angry sea-lions as well.
Posted by: at April 15, 2005 11:44 AMThat was me. At least on the Firefox browser, the Name: field (but not the Comments: field) disappears when you preview and hit "Back" (which, I know, you don't have to do).

Posted by: at April 17, 2005 01:48 AMYES, Wise is the WalMart of SF surfing. Commercialism extreme, no love. I used to respect Bob for his dedication to the Beach, but now feel that he is a corporate whore who does not care about anything but $$. He constantly tries to "oust" all other competition from the area, via some chicken shit means.
I will never set foot in Wise again.
