Checked it early and passed cuz of disorganization and bump. On the way to work drive by showed some cleaner and bigger waves than at 5:45. Definately something to be had between now and lunchtime for those lucky enough to make it.

on the baja tip: if you're still planning on going where you were planning on going: there are some pretty serious flies that have adapted amazingly to the wind but they aren't really a big deal, just buzzy. they don't bite or anything and didn't bother us really. the wind was the more difficult thing to deal with as far as camping. it blows hard offshore from about 10 am on. perfect for the surf. annoying for eating or trying to think straight. any tent or device that is not fully staked and tied down will be ripped, blown and bent. but shade is desirable. so...just buy something cheap, stake it down seriously and expect it to get bent to hell. i am way jealous. hope you score.

I dont claim to surf well nor be buds with Jeff Clark. In fact, I like that I am known as "KOOK BERTO". I dont mind sharing a casual word with anyone as I am realistic about my abilities and confident about my character.

Your right about getting my shit together but that really means heading south to join every other company as well as being a bit more of an ass greaser. I work for an ass greasing snowboard company currently and have worked for SCD (THINK skates, HUBBA, and Venture) where I was a genuine industry kook, but I knew my place. I do have the skills in business but you are correct that have not fostered the proper connections. I dont want to connect with people I dont like just to get ahead.

Lastly Flap I was just flappin. I said I was takin shit..so what really bugs you? I have fun with my "online" persona and dont take myself or what I write that seriously.

I second what Steamwand said. Damn flies. I'd recommend bringing one of those goofy electric tennis raquet fly swatters as well, since there's nothing worse than trying to take a nap with huge horseflies landing on and in your nose. Gets to the point where you start slapping yourself in the face really hard, which will wake you right up.

oh and another thing, i hope this isn't a bummer but...we went in late march and the water was way colder than we thought it would be. the local fellas said it warms up around the time you're getting there. so it probably will be fine but if you have a spring suit (and room in your luggage) i'd bring it, maybe even a full if no spring. also the reef is rather shallow and not so soft. you can bounce off it better with neoprene.

E, check the salt flats and take the long roads they have the best scenery, but take a gas can. I bought my tix last night for Costa, up until the last minute I was debating on makinh it a 6 week trip and taking a month in Mex, but finances and the fact that i've been to mex twice already this year made me go with staying in Costa. But Mex is where the heart is, always.

Checked the beach but headed south, and E's report makes me glad. Ramad Nil was glassy and not unsizeable where sharkbait and I surfed, with fun drops and a few non-closeouts to play on. The paddle was easy if you caught it at a lull, but sucky if you ran into one of the evil sets of three or four waves each breaking a bit further out than the last, producing the occasional burst of unfortunate language from the cleaned-up.

man, it was a great trip, surf wise. The flies
are a freakin' nightmare. I've never seen so
many flies. But then again, they are just flies.
Take your wettie, just in case. And if you can't
find fire wood for the fire, those yuccas burn
great.

On another note, if you are driving down there,
be careful!! I was hit by semi-truck at about
65 mph. After a lot for fancy stunt driving, I
managed to get to what little median there is and
checked that we were all alive and well. Just
body damage on the car (still there to this day).
Truck didn't even stop.

Then to top it all off, the policia totally set
us up. Driving well within speed limit, one cop
pulls in front of me, another in the back, and
procedes to pull us over. Finds a little weed
and takes our money. Not before tasting some
spit (which made it all worth the payoff) that
he thought was cocaine. (My friend was brushing
his teeth in the back seat, and had spit in a
container, which the cop thought was coke, HA!)

Anyway, that was one of my most fun trips down there even though all that shit happened. The story gets more involved, but I'll leave it at
that. I love Baja!

Pez- I meant no bad with ya, I just don't think you should rip on people in the industry simply cause they have a cool/great paying job. Nothing personal at all, bro. Sell-out is a big term, and I know some incredibly cool people in the 'industry' that some people think are totaly wacked based only on what was written about them. So it just depends.
And btw, we are all kooks. Everyone has a legend, hell session, once in a while and everyone kooks bad too sooner or later. You're not a bad surfer either...cheers

Re: Working in the industry - I got no personal experience, but my son has been a shop rat since he was 14 (he'll be 20 on his next b-day). He's got lots of stories about glad-handing industry reps coming in with THE HUSTLE, "Yeah brah, this is the sickest (board design, fin-system, wetsuit, or deckpad) EVER!" But he's also got lots of stories about the reps hookin' him up with free stuff (I don't mean stickers and wax) and treating him with respect. He's just a bottom-of-the-totem-pole KID - there's really little, or no percentage in them smoozin' HIM. Some of 'em are just cool like that.
Yesterday, pez wondered if Bob Wise was really any different from Aleks, Devin, or John Schultz. I say, yes. I'll disregard the rumors about him I've heard re: his relationships towards the other SF shops - that could just be the competition talking shit. My personal experience with Aleks, Devin and John Schultz is that even if all I want is a bar of wax or a tide table, they and their respective staff are friendly and respectful. But, my experience with Bob Wise and SOME of his staff has been otherwise - even when I have been making a substantial purchase (boards, wetsuits). I feel no need to shop there anymore.
The back is feeling pretty good, I've been surfing more as of late - maybe I'll get wet this evening if the wind holds off (yeah right!).

It's nuts these guys get double barrels and only get score like a 6.5

Well, I bought my plane tickets last night. Went through STA Travel and saved a SHIT load of money. Airtreks quoted $6000 for all my tickets. I paid $3300 to fly to Central and South America, New York, London, Ireland, Bangkok, Oz, and NZ. Insurance for 9 months: $500. I'm SO STOKED! e, I'd be really jazzed if we could set up a little section that I can post pics and what not. My dream trip is turning more and more into reality day by day. I'm making a lot of sacrifices, but I think they're worth it. All I need now is my backpack, tent, and sleeping bag before I leave on July 5th. All together I'll be gone for 8 1/2 months! I don't know if I can handle it!! Anyway, off to work. WORD!

Hello all. Another great day at the Hook. Headed out around 8:30 and stayed out til 12:30. The most people out at one time couldn't have been more than 20... in all of the cove. Great day filled with fun surf, great vibes, and the occasional hello from the locals...our friends the sea lions and the otters of course.
