swell

large raw and onshore.
Watched a few bombing glory sections peel off.
No takers as of 7:15.
Somewhere along the coast things are happening.
Somebody made the good call to take off work.
Last night he piled into the car with a friend.
Tortoise on the radio while driving 4 hours to an out-of-the-way wilderness location.
Arrive around midnight.
Pitch a tent.
Get some shuteye.
Up at the crack this morning.
Walk down a path through the forest.
Out into a little cove.
Birds chirping.
Calm wind.
A right peeling like mad in the early-morning light.
Crystalline-glass, overhead and empty.
Run back to the camp site.
Chow some trail mix.
Spark one up.
Into the wetsuit.
Grab board and turbo-sprint back down the path.
Over the rocky beach.
Paddle out through the channel.
A set stacks on the horizon.
Mounds approach.
Spin and stroke into a lined-up grinder.
Elevator drop over the ledge.
Check off the bottom and nestle into the pocket.
Cram arm into the face to slow down.
Ridiculously perfect wave molded out in front.
Conical kaleidoscope.
Pumps and carves.
kick out.
Friend flying down the line behind.
Hoots.
Sunshine.
40 waves later head in for lunch.
Same thing for the arvo session.
Back to the city for a friday night monster bash.
Rage all night with that warm, fuzzy post-epic-session glow.

Somebody's doing it right now.

and this made me think of a mexico-related question: does anyone know of places in the mission that serve handmade tortillas?

Loon, what is your email? I got some Mainland Q's for ya....

On the tortilla tip, head down to SSF, take Grand Ave, go to La Tapatia (black building, same company that you see in Safeway, etc.). Head inside and go to the back. There, you will find tortillas being bagged right off the tortilla machines. Best of all, you can snag one of the best $4 burritos in the bay on your way out.

Posted by: Kaiser at May 20, 2005 11:13 AM

Took a look at O.B. just now. Man, the swell is crossed up and junky. Currently, the winds seem to be picking up, but even if it was glassy, it's just breaking all over the place without any decent shape. The call is for south: Santa Cruz, guys.

Homemade flour tortillas

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cold vegetable shortening, lard, or butter, cut into small pieces. (butter is bueno)
1 teaspoon salt (1/2 if using salted butter)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2/3 warm water

In a bowl blend the flour and the shortening until the mixture resembles fine meal. In a small bowl stir together the salt and 2/3 cup warm water, add the salted water to the flour mixture, and toss the mixture until the liquid is incorporated. Form the dough into a ball and knead it on a lightly floured surface for 2 to 3 minutes, or until it is smooth. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces (or 4 equal pieces for 10-inch tortillas), form each piece into a ball, and let the dough stand, covered with plastic wrap, for at least 30 minutes and up to 1 hour. Heat a griddle over moderately high heat until it is hot, on a lightly floured surface roll 1 of the balls of dough into a 7- or 10-inch round, and on the griddle cook the tortilla, turning it once, for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, or until it is puffy and golden on both sides. Wrap the tortilla in a kitchen towel and make tortillas with the remaining dough in the same manner, stacking and enclosing them in the towel as they are done. The tortillas may be made 1 day in advance and kept chilled in a plastic bag.

Makes twelve 7-inch or four 10-inch tortillas.

Welcome home Loon -
For tortillas hechas a mano try
La Palma on 24th St (take-out only)
or
Chava's on Mission (around 24th St?)
It's been awhile since I've been to either place, but I'm sure they're still there.

Going to the surf flick at the Victoria, "Glass Love" was fun last night - maybe a little too soulful for some tastes, but watching Pat Curren shaping a board for son Joe was classic. The horror short, "Nite of the Doggie Diner" was the top part of the evening for my wife and I - our son was the zombie sucking the brains out of that guy towards the end - we're so very, very proud of him.

come 'on Kaiser! Any hard core linda mar local know's about El Gran De Oro which makes some sick carne asada dishes. They stew their beef as opposed to grilling it.

And they got the god damn tortilla press rocking daily and they service the real supermarkets...the ones that don't say safeway, cala or bell.

But I guess you missed it 'cause it's in the Sharp Park district?

I think Kelly got too high of a score for that layback recovery...it looks sick real time and it was some great wave knowledge to do what he did..but he should have been penalized for that sketchy take-off...if he didnt get that mark Bruce would of beat him...that contest has to be one of the most difficult to judge as its primarily tube riding...Kelly did ride extremely well though...thanks for the link....

Glass Love, super sick and really mellow. Naked Surfing. I like how one of the narrators described surfers as the best model for human beings: "Being here now." Focusing on one single spot of the wave, being covered by the lip. And that's all that matters. Solid! What about that guy Neal getting the most insane-long back hand tubes. Reminded me of Leweis' description of the longest desert barrel he ever got. Plop in, plop out, plop in, repeat. Curren ripping poppies old board at Suneset. While I was watching him surf the board his dad made for him in the smaller surf, it didn't look too responsive, but once they started pulling into those beach break death-pits, that board looked like magic. Again, Neal was effortlessly floating in and out of what looked to be unmakable sections on that bonzer style egg/fish. Always a pleasure running into you Pez! Some buddies said SP was big and crossed up yesterday. All you could do was go straight. Rza, email me at aloha2ian at yahoo. Pez, that's my other email I said I'd shoot to you.

Eating Burritos in the mission is all about what knowing what type of burrito you want an who has the tastiest one:

El Farolito- Super Suiza, Carne Asada
Cancun- El Pastor
El Toro- Puerco con Salsa Verde
Pancho Villa- Steak and Shrimp
Taco Loco- Carnitas and Tounge, mainly tounge yummm
La Altena- Chicken and Chicken Asado (Stewed)
El Castilleno- BBQ Chicken
El Zapalote- Mole, Chille Relleno and the salsa

There are others but I tend to eat Mexi depending on what I want to eat...

Gordos has a great salsa verde....very similar to Lavanida

If your in the Marina La Canasta owned by the Mier family(people very close to my heart)has some of the best burritos anywhere.......

Posted by: pez at May 20, 2005 01:13 PM

Jeezzzus Ian - Sounds pretty cool, except for that stretch from Sept 5-7 - that'll be a grinder.

Posted by: at May 20, 2005 01:21 PM

Carnitas at La Taqueria in the Mission is all time.

E,
I respectully disagree on the La Vanida call, I would call it in the bottom three burritos in SF.

Gordos I would rate as an okay burrito but the worst burrito in SF IMHO is Chinos in the Outer Richmond...which is too bad as it is very convenient to the post sesh grinds.

But I consider myself somewhat of a burrito snob.

Posted by: Reality Check at May 20, 2005 01:29 PM

Kaiser, do you work for a company with the word "Surf" in it's name? Am I tieing something together here, or am I thinking of someone else?

Posted by: adam at May 20, 2005 01:38 PM

Whoa E! LaVanida in Inner Sunset best burrito?

You beta check yo sef befo you wreck you sef with words like that. LaVanida is for all of us in the Sunset too lazy to hit the Mission or further out.

Let me guess - Chino's comes in second place!!!?

I still have to claim either:
- Chili Verde on 6th & Market
- Victor's on Townsend & 3rd (its all about the fresh salsa)

I have also have some fantastic tortillas at Panchos on Geary - that is the only thing redeemable about that place though.

My 2 cents

Posted by: DAK at May 20, 2005 01:39 PM

i was in love Chinos for a long time, got sick once and the love faded a little, but i'd still say they blow Gordos out of the agua, you cant get refried at Gordos, thats just absurd. whats your beef (ha ha) with chinos RC?

eating a victor's grilled chicken right now. thier roasted pepper hot salsa is excellent..could be my favorite burrito in the city right now..

Posted by: bagel at May 20, 2005 01:39 PM

Pancho Villas = OVER RATED and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Posted by: DAK at May 20, 2005 01:41 PM

No beef with Chinos I used to eat there quite a bit as well when I lived in that hood(and I think Chino is a nice guy) but the last few times I went there the meat was unedible. It has to be hard to always get it right but IMHO Chino has really let the quality slip there.

On the refried beans tip I am not 100% on this but I suspect Chino uses canned refried beans instead of the real deal which if true is borderline blasphemy.

In all fairness I think La Taqueria has the best Carnitas in the city yet I had it once where it tasted like cardboard. When dealing in large volume it easy to let quality slip.

Posted by: Reality Check at May 20, 2005 01:49 PM

I'm not a big fan of LaVanida either. Not bad but too many onions in everything. Sorry e.

I don't dig the cheese slabs that they use at Gordo.

Good call on Cancun's Al Pastor, pez. Damn good burrito. That place behind Safeway at Linda Mar does a pretty good Al Pastor as well.

I usually just hit up El Balazo. A little expensive but tasty and the convenience factor is big.

Posted by: tucker at May 20, 2005 02:15 PM

I completely agree with pez and 3to5 about la canasta. I lived near there for a year a few years ago and was a regular, I kind of miss it now, but I'm not in that neighborhood much. super nice people, and legit food. Cancun and La Taqueria are my favorites when I'm in the mission, I like the tacos at Cancun better than the burritos though. They have the best tacos I've had in SF (not that I'm an expert). Gotta give a shout Victor's though, their carnitas are as good as any I've had in SF, and the chile verde is great too. Lately I've been going with the carnitas torta for the sake of variety.

I like the shot above Kelly, makes me proud....

Posted by: Kaiser at May 20, 2005 03:00 PM

Huh...the day after all the weed talk we have the burrito talk? Sounds like the munchies. I think the burrito place on the end of Noriega is totally passable, probably better than half the places in the Mission. There are some awful burrito places in the Mission.

I'd also like to get married to 3to5. I don't care if I gotta be the wife, I just want me some of that cooking.

I'm also incredibly jealous of Ian. Have a good time for those of us whose surf trips go no further south than Sloat. Also, I noted you are passing through New York during the spin up of hurricane season. You might want to take another day or two to chance it. JFK to the end of Long Island is only about 1.5 hours (Hamptons are good times), and it's maybe 20 minutes to beach. Probably not great surf, but you don't need a wettie that time of year.

Let me just say that there isn't anything on any of my records that isn't piled four inches deep on any of the rap albums that are major economic successes. I mean, there's nothing I've ever said on any of my albums in terms of sexual lyrics that hasn't been surpassed many times over in current rap or dance music. The thing that's threatening, I believe, is the fact that these people know that if they come after me, I won't keep my mouth shut. I'll fight back. I'm not stupid. And one of the hallmarks of contemporary life is what I perceive to be a conspiracy against conscious thought. Every aspect of government at every level has conspired to minimize education and to punish any individual or group that chooses to experience the full benefits of the First Amendment. the contemporary message -- the subtext of contemporary life -- is keep your fucking mouth shut and be a drone. And government is set up in such a way now with its complete disregard for the value of education that they're going to perpetuate a type of stupidity that makes it possible to have an entire nation of people watching late-night infomercials on TV with their phone-in credit card. How else could such things exist, if it weren't for the disastrous state of education in America?

Posted by: zappa at May 20, 2005 03:59 PM

What sort of sociological "lemming effect" do you see in the rise of the guitar superhero?
I don't have a speech I make about this, but my observation is that guitar playing as currently understood has more to do with sports than it has to do with music. It's an Olympic-challenge type of situation. the challenges are in the realm of speed, redundancy, choreography, and grooming.

2000-2004 the housing market went up 46% in median home value.

2000-2004 the mortgage debt load went up 56%.

Interest only loans go up in monthly payments 70% after an initial interest only period of 3-5 years. More if interest rates rise.

Two out of every three Bay Area mortgages since 2000 have an initial interest only period.

By 2006 the monthly mortgage payments in the Bay Area will rise another 40% over their current status (in total), or else people will be bailing from the market like Wall Street in 1929 and the market will deflate to close to 60% of its current value.

OK, e this doesnt compare to your early am fantasy but its pretty nice.....had lunch in North beach risotto al frutto di mare with some baby octopus as appetizer, to Vittoria pastry for an eclair to be consumed later...met my buddy at our favorite "secret" spot that's never supposed to break this late in the year and we share head high feathering peelers with 2 other guys, the vibe mellow arms like noodles due to a strong current...then after the session I eat my eclair, guiltlessly! ( all true)

as far as burritos go follow this simple rule and take it from a bay area native, SF burritos suck and east bay burritos rule. ( for Chinese food this is reversed)
peace

Just gotr back from Monterey Bay whale watching trip. Saw a pod of killer whales feeding on a big ol' sea lion. We watched them for about an hour, then back to the dock at 1:00. 28 people on board. 5 got sea-sick. Not me or my wife, eeehhhh.

Stopped at the h**k on the way back. Perfect head-high, long, smooth walls flowing in regularly. I passed though cuz the crowd was in full force. Blatant drop-ins on every wave. No one was spared. Probably get 1 wave an hour to have it ruined by some arse. Painful decision.

All-in-all, it was a good day for not surfing. We stayed in a Travel Lodge for $60 in Monterey. Had a great dinner with the wifes sidekicks from her job. Had a great lunch after the boat trip.

drove down thursday night to pismo for a video premiere, had a post-movie midnight sesh at the pier with some fun inside rights, surfed a heavy mysto break on saturday morning with some idiot doing tow-ins. hit up santa cruz on the way back up yesterday evening and scored some nugsssssss.... i'm fucking sunburnt to shit with no voice and a sinus infection today but it was all worth it fo' sho'...

on the burrito tip, i'm still a big fan of chino's but i usually stick to the veggie burritos... not really sure about their meat but for a post-sesh meal nothing beats their VB's or nachos IMHO. i also like si seņor on 2nd and am growing to love victor's in the ballpark area as well. hot or mild salsa, guapo? someone needs to put in a solid mexican place in the divis/fulton area and my life would be complete.

where is the love for the San Mateo County burrito joints??

I have yet to find a better burrito then Tres Amigos in HMB. El Gran Amigo also knows what they are doing.

Surfed crack of dawn patrol this morning. I was in the water at 5:35 am at the Hook and there were already 5 guys on it. The waves were very inconsistent and it got worse as the tide cam in. I split after a couple of hours and only a few short rides.

I went down to Santa Cruz for a bum weak session at 26th street. The other places were crazy packed, and looking pretty weak and small. Ah well, atleast we got some swell for the summer.

Ian,

What sort of airline ticket did you purchase to get around the world like that?

Im gonna weigh in on the burrito scene here...

First off, there are good burritos to be had all over the Bay Area, we are lucky!

East Bay scene:

Tacaria Los Pericos - in the Pelton Center on E14 just south of Estudillo in San Leandro, great fresh salsa, Authentic, Menudo Sunday, big local scene, amazing burritos, carnitas, fresh carrot juice, all time! SEEK THIS PLACE OUT!

Cactus in Berkeley - Solid, black beans, flavorful but not very authentic.

Viva in Berkeley - Old school, big and messy, seems to always have a bit too much sour cream, nice flavor...

Zona Rosa in Berkeley - RIP I miss you (weeps).

College Burrito - been around a while, not my favorite by any means.

Peninsula

Burrito joint on Highway 1 in HMB, Tres Amigos? I cant remember the name, great burritos though...

El Charrito in San Carlos (Holly & El Camino), really really good, cheap tacos, excellent carnitas, my peninsula standard I measure all others from, authentic, no salsa fresca but great verde. SEEK THIS PLACE OUT TOO!

Tacos El Grullense in Redwood City, great authentic, slow service though. Redwood city has great Mexi food.

Santa Barbara - FREEBIRDS!!! in Isla Vista, what can I say BBQ Chicken super monster, yum!

Santa Barbara - Rose Cafe (or something like that) on the Mesa near SBCC, totally authentic and delicious.

That is my two cents...

Hit Pathetica on Sunday for some 5-6 foot mostly closed out whompers...a few top to bottom turns, not VFW or Pacheco, but fun enough.
