Large, winter-like strength

Serious, rumbling masses marching forth.
Muted kabooms and hellbent spitfire.
Not for the faint of heart this morning.
Overhead, lumbering A-frames.
Mostly burgering, but occasionally rifling.
Not many takers through the middle.
Light wind from the south.
Purdy, post-storm blue sky.
Some dog is having it's day right now.

Our leaders gorge themselves and pander to the business elite.
Two oilmen run the show.
How long will America remain at the top?
China, India, Europe, Japan.
Less warheads, more schools.
Less tax breaks for the top 1%.
Less cluster bombs, more jobs for the poor.
Less hate, more compassion.
Less short-sighted ecological looting.
More long-range technological innovation.
More science for the groms.
No Star Wars.
More offshores.
More surf shredding, less surf postering.
More flow, less blow.
More thwack, less tack.

Don't forget the Goon surf contest/bbq tomorrow in front of sharkbait's house. Begins at 10am i do believe.

Hey all, Wanted to check in and see if anyone knows what Punta de Mita (half hour drive north of Puerto Vallerta) in Mexico is like, surfwise, during July and August. Plannning a trip there and haven't a clue what the summer surf is like. Thanks.

Posted by: ratita at June 17, 2005 09:05 AM

Pta de Mita is good on a south. The point was bought by a 4 seasons, limiting access. I was there in 03- you can hire a boat, or hike in along the beach. ~45 minute walk in. Bring water. Assorted fun reefs. A surf camp nearby regularly boats in here. If a big south, may be better to head to san blas.

Rockaway looked pretty gnarly and un-fun just now. Big, but lumpy, sectiony, stacked up, lots of water moving around. Saw a surfer and a boog paddle around a lot, get no rides, and settle for riding in on foam. Others were about to give it a try, though.

Giant triangles attack bay area:
http://sfports.wr.usgs.gov/cgi-bin/wind/windbin.cgi

fyi goons, doors open at 10 but it's a drop in/drop out thing...this way we have enough space, esp if it rains hard. 23 foot conditions may cancel most 'surfing', but at the LEAST a hang-out is definitely on and we can always do this again during the end of July.

Bonus for anyone who brings 3 to 5's recipies. Blowup dolls would be pretty awesome to 'surf' hahaha. Please make double copies of all photos for me :) I will pay! Cheers,

I could see only two surfers in the water this am from my house. Saw only one ride this am on the southern end of the middle - South Central? Guy on a blue board caught a racy 2OH peak right around 8 AM. Any a youz?

All the reports were under-calling the waves this am. There is obviously size out there. Surfline was the worst calling 4 to 5 feet with occasional 7 feet. Whassup wit dat? The bouys were reading 9.5 feet at 12 secs from 291 degrees. That does not translate to head high.

Just in case any of you have been caught up in this "NPR is gonna go away because the Evil Republicans are cancelling federal funding" crap that is coming out of MoveOn.org lately:

This has little to do with NPR or PBS. The House proposed cutting funding to CPB (The Corporation for Public Broadcasting) 25% this next fiscal year, and possibly ending funding completely in 2-3 years. Only 15% of CPBs funding comes from the Federal government.

Less than 1% of NPRs funding comes from CPB. The federal government does not fund NPR or PBS directly. A very small percentage -- between one percent to two percent of NPR's annual budget -- comes from competitive grants sought by NPR from federally funded organizations, such as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

I looked on CPB's website to see what they fund. You can do a program search to see the programs they have funded ( http://www.cpb.org/programs/search.php?page_type=radio ).

Hey ratita,
I surfed Punta Mita a couple of weeks ago. Surf there in July/August would depend on any south swells and your chances are good. It's a long walk out to the point especially in the heat - most guys hire a boat ride from the surfshop but they charge 730 pesos ($73!) there and back. I got lucky and jumped in with a couple of guys getting a ride from a fishing boat. The fisherman were hassled by a local for bringing out surfers (they're not supposed to - it's a racket) but one of the guys getting a ride was a local who told them that the fisherman was his brother-in-law.

Punta Mita is a great spot and never too crowded because it is not the easiest place to get to. Right now they are rebuilding the highway out to Punta Mita and doing a lot of building right at the point - in 5 years, it is going to be destroyed and overrun. Sad.

There is lots of other surfspots around this area and a lot of them are always crowded. You can probably do some hiking and find hidden gems.

India's growth seems to be more sustainable for the short term.

Those of you who took a pass at OB probably made the right call, not too much fun at all. It took me 30 mins to paddle out at the south end. I then paddled around in circles trying to find a shoulder. Finally got pitched, broke my leash, and had a very sketchy swim in. I still feel the salt watter swirling in my belly.

WASHINGTON - Both college towns, Boston and Boulder, Colo., share another distinction: They lead the nation in marijuana use. Northwestern Iowa and southern Texas have the lowest use.

Regions could be as specific as Riverside, Calif., or as broad as all of the state of New York (minus New York City). Federal officials say the information will help states decide where they should spend money for treatment and prevention programs.

For marijuana, 5.1 percent of people around the country reported using marijuana in the previous 30 days. In Boston, the home of Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern and several other colleges, 12.2 percent reported using marijuana in the previous 30 days.

John Auerbach, executive director of the public health commission for the city of Boston, said the survey might not reflect current marijuana use in Boston because the data came from 1999-2001 national surveys.

"All that said, we're not surprised that substance abuse is a serious issue in the Boston area," Auerbach said. "The mayor and the health department have made the issue of substance abuse a top public health priority."

"College students in general have a more relaxed attitude about marijuana than other age groups," he said. "But in general, I don't think Boston has a markedly differently perspective on marijuana than other parts of the country."

The federal report doesn't explain why certain regions fare worse than others when it comes to smoking pot or cigarettes, or for heavy alcohol use, only that they do.

In Boulder County, the home of the University of Colorado, 10.3 percent reported using marijuana during the same time period. But a public health official who has studied marijuana usage there said he too had doubts about the report.

Anybody out there who defends the current administration is either not paying attention, an idiot, or part of the evil plan. Let's break it down:

911

Bush Lied about weapons of mass desruction to lead the country to war, then changed the objective to the liberation or the country he demonized.

Where is Osama?

Bush claimed the war was over a couple of years ago, and even did the publicity jet ride in his little bulge creating outfit.

Tax cuts to the rich. Super rich that is.

Oil drilling in prestine Northern Alaska, just as Americans forget about the Exxon Valdez disaster in Southern Alaska.

Creating a world of enemies that used to be our allies,

The conscious dismantling of our public education system.

blah blah blah

On a lighter note...

As you are driving the road out to the Four Seasons there are a few access roads on your left that lead down to the beach. One of them ends at a gate where you can park. Just say 'Hola' to the security guard in the booth. There are some nice high end rental houses on the beach. Walk to your left (east) along the beach and over the front yard of one of these properties and you will see Pools, a gnarly right rock reef point with the worst sea urchins anywhere. Wave is ripped by local Mexicans, who are all friendly. Fickle spot though. Better option is walk about 10 minutes up the beach (West) to a surf spot in front of a resort. It's a really fun spot that is surfable from 1 to 6 foot. We found surfing this wave the better option than dealing with the boat ride out to the Punta Mita spots. That time of year it will be hot so without a south you may get skunked. Have fun.

Congressmember John Conyers convened the first public hearing on the so-called Downing Street Memo and other recently released British documents that he says show the Bush administration's "efforts to cook the books on pre-war intelligence." The jam-packed hearing was held in a small basement meeting room in the Capitol because Republicans refused to allow the Democrats to hold an official hearing. After the meeting, Conyers delivered a petition to the White House, signed by more than a half a million Americans calling on President Bush to answer questions on the documents. More than 120 Congressmembers also signed the letter. Among those who testified yesterday was former US ambassador to Iraq, Joe Wilson, longtime CIA analyst Ray McGovern and Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed last year in Iraq.

ok, if we are going to delve into politics and bash each other, let's at least be accurate.

John Conyers, you botched some stuff regarding Joe Wilson. He's an accomplished guy, but was never ambassador to Iraq. Here is his bio, according to him, as written in the NYT on July 6, 2003:

For 23 years, from 1976 to 1998, I was a career foreign service officer and ambassador. In 1990, as chargé d'affaires in Baghdad, I was the last American diplomat to meet with Saddam Hussein. (I was also a forceful advocate for his removal from Kuwait.) After Iraq, I was President George H. W. Bush's ambassador to Gabon and São Tomé and Príncipe; under President Bill Clinton, I helped direct Africa policy for the National Security Council.

Tom, I love those photos of the big guys getting it done. Too bad the mainstream mags don't publish that sort of thing. Surfer used to do a "people who surf" page that would focus on everyday normal folks, wish there was more of that out there to compliment the offerings that E provides to us.

Posted by: the janitor at June 17, 2005 11:53 AM

Yeah, I got to thinking about a helmet yesterday when, after milking a smallish wave right onto the shore, I was tossed and my board slammed into my head. When I stood up, my left ear was killing me. I later peeled away my 3mm wetsuit hood at the car and discovered that something pointy on my quad fish (lots of pointy things on that board) had actually punched a slit through the top cartilage of my ear. It stopped bleeding after a while, but the ear is still tender today. Glad I at least had the hood on, could've been worse. You never know when a little bit of extra protection will come in handy...

HB--

Is that pic is of El Porto at Rosecrans blvd? I have a good friend that lives right there and I surf that spot often when I am down there for work.

I don't think you or he will be getting any of this swell as the angle is too steep (310 degrees or so?) (although perhaps one of the more weather -oriented folks would be more able to confirm...)

Posted by: g. at June 17, 2005 12:10 PM

swell angle is about 295 up here, but add at least 10 degrees for SoCal. El Porto will pick up a little, better than nothing, but it is not going to go overhead.

Posted by: blakestah at June 17, 2005 12:16 PM

I wear a helmet on occasion when the crowds are thick or if the waves are breaking hard. I have also been whacked in the head in the shorepound with and without helmet. With is better. I have a Gath. At first it pinched my ears a little but I stretched it out and now it's fine. I find it more comfortble than a hood/cap cuz I don't get the ear pressure thing after submarining that i get with a hood/cap. Typically is small stuff I don't bother with it--vanity I suppose.

Posted by: Dennis at June 17, 2005 12:18 PM

The fat dude kinda looks like a foamball at pipe. Kinda nice to see different surfers other than the cleanagers.

The guy should consider cross training to lose some of that heart attack meat though. Surfing is kind of a lounge sport, besides the little bit of paddling you do.

Posted by: at June 17, 2005 12:21 PM

Helmets- I guess I'm kind of a helmet freak, since they might very well have saved my life on 2 occasions (not surfing)

Never used a gath in the US (although would have prevented 50 stiches or so and a gumby haircut), but when surfing remote places, reefs especially, I have. They look kooky but may well prevent you from having to end your trip early or time out of the H2O, epecially in remote locations. Wearing a helmet also almost always ensures you wont hit the reef and therefore feel even more stupid for wearing it.

Warning!!!
Watch out for the helmet courage that comes with it, which may be more dangerous than not wearing a helmet at all. Definately ups the charging/ "invincible" factor for sketchy waves.

Kayak helmets are more protective, probably way better for kiting. I highly recommend Seda kayak helmets. Kayak helmets are made more raking the bottom of a river with your head= bomber.

Posted by: artifact at June 17, 2005 12:22 PM

marketing department, that sort of group thinking is what has caused the stale environment and offerings that are out there now. Add a small section of everyday people instead of wall to wall junk and you'll be surprised. Which ads do you remember in the typical surf mag? Shot number 8,032 of skinny white kid doing an air he probably didn't land?

How much more "after zoning out to their ipods, the buys decided to get off the yacht and give the rights a shot" crap do we really need?

Got a response back from the SF Emergency Response regarding the warning system.

Hi Dennis, thanks for your message about the recent tsunami scare.

A Crisis Action Team made up of the Police Chief, Fire Chief, the Mayor and
the OES Director convened immediately and determined that due to the
circumstances of this event it wasn't appropriate to activate the Outdoor
Warning System. Police were deployed to vulnerable areas, and had started
to tell people to leave the beaches when the cancellation came in.

In this situation, where there was such a short warning time, there was
concern that activating the sirens might have caused people to panic and
try to evacuate when it was safer to remain indoors. The media did enough
to cause panic and confusion without the help of the sirens. There's an
investigation to determine why the notification to safety officials here
was delayed but systems have already been put in place to ensure that this
doesn't happen again. However, the use of the siren will always be decided
based on the particulars of each incident and what is determined to be the
best way to protect our residents and visitors.

Prior to this event we have been looking at different options to notify
people who are indoors in areas vulnerable to inundation, since the Outdoor
Warning System is only intended to notify people outside. One
consideration is a phone/pager notification system that could be
voluntarily registered for, such as they just started using in DC. We're
waiting to see how successful this program is for them and whether it would
be appropriate for San Francisco. Other options are reverse 911 systems,
such as what they currently use in Richmond to alert for chemical releases.

Hope this is helpful.

Best, Amy

I guess the two things I see in a helmet are how they effect your ability to duck dive and swim, balanced against the protection they offter in 1) falling on your head 2) protecting from sharp things. 1) requires more padding 2) requires more coverage. I'm guessing Gath for 1) kayak helmet for 2)? Is either better suited for duck diving?

Posted by: perv at June 17, 2005 04:23 PM

as a fat ass surfer, I can say that I surfed twice as good when I was slim and trim... Bush and Osama, both killing machines for different reasons, equally as evil and crazy.

even more evil and crazy

My experience with Mita has always been in the winter it goes off, every time I pass through in the summer it's flat. I don't understand it thopugh, Baja blocks the bay of banderas from the north. I've passed through a few dozen times.

the odd thing is, i think i understand it.

not much wind in sf. but the swell is still raw and angry.

Hi Ratita,
I just got back from Punta Mita last week. There is a break called La Lancha and you can hire a boat from a nearby beach called El Anclonte. One of the best captains is a Mexican who goes by the name of Captain Chopo (yup pronounced just like the Tatian break). Ther is a little restaurant (I think it is called Rocios) on the beach and this guy Gabriel speaks English well and can tell you where the Captain is - he also makes killer chiviche. It's a very forgiving wave so I loved it - in fact had one of my best days ever. One day there were about five others out besides me and my buddy, the other day we had the place to ourselves for hours before the Las Olas Surf camp showed up and they only stayed for an hour. They were really cool and didn't clog the take off area at all. There is a big rock right off a small rocky point which is partially submerged if the tide is higher. The best spot to sit is right next to that rock on the right side and directly in front of a palm tree just beyond the sandy part of the beach. The days I was there it looked like it was going to break further down to the right but everytime I tried it tricked me and I wasted energy paddling. The rock is the spot. It peels nicely for a long right. Have fun!

Punta de Mita is the place right about now. It’s really no less than about two dozen breaks that face due South that should be going from now until the fall. Beaches, reefs and points. You name it, it’s all there. And, if Burros or La Lancha isn’t going you can zip over the hill to Sayulita or San Pancho, our sleepy sister ciudad to the south that’s got, what else, a peaky, hammering beach break.

A buddy from Sayulita sent me some pictures of the wave at La Launcha when it was going off in May. Perhaps someone at the Goon Fest will be kind enough to teach me how to post stuff and you all can get a look.

bbr- Are you going to do another issue of A-Frame? Very cool format.

Mexi- Your photos are so sick you could surf plywood and we would applaud. Something tells me you surf a lot better than you let on.

Sharky- Wish I could attend the executive goon board meeting, but I've been dying for a weekend down south and I'm there.

All- Report from the drive south. Smoke-a-jay somewhat clean but big and mean. Two guys out. Anal Mar had at least one left- the rest was the great wall of China (but not as large as other places). Monty- Scary. County Line- no one out but possibly surfable. SCreek- Friggin' big. Hotties and pros from SC on it. Disneyland North- check the cams.

It's more of a dinner but the fish tacos at Eldo's at 9th and Irving are probably the best I've had in the city. Pretty good cervezas there too.

There's a Wahoo's in San Jose.

E! Shout out from Paris. Was checkin' Niceness for some words of wisdom and a day dream escape into the waves. Though there are no waves here, Paris is kickin'. Last night the city threw "la fete de la musique" where musicians and bands set up on pretty much every street corner and played until late in the night. Tons of people dancing, drinking, and wandering in the streets. Definitely a good time.
